nbc 10 news starts now. and right now on nbc 10 news today, look at this, a clearer picture of the security that will ring center city philadelphia when pope francis visits next month. we'll run through where the lines are draw and how you can get in and out. you wish we could fence in the weather we've had over the last couple of days. it will get warmer out there today and warmer this weekend. we are off to another comfortable start with lower humidity this morning. good morning, welcome to nbc 10 news on a friday. i'm chris cato. we begin with meteorologist bill henley and his first alert forecast. bill, we've been on a roll weatherwise this week. >> today is even more comfortable. as you members of the jury the humidity is lower so the

temperatures are cooler as well. nice and clear view. this is the view from the mellon bank building in center city. 50s for doylestown, pottstown and millville 68. philadelphia low 60s, northeast philadelphia at 63 degrees. look at roxborough at 61. a pleasant start, a bit cool this morning but we'll see the temperatures climb 67. by 9:00, 74 and into the 80s at noontime today. it will be a warmer day than it was yesterday. we'll go through it hour by hour with the future weather when i come back in ten minutes. right now let's see how the traffic is looking on a friday morning. brittney shipp has your first alert traffic. >> i-95 atten in, things are moving along nicely. take 95 to work southbound, woodhaven road to 676, that will take you about 12 minutes. in the a whole lot of traffic out. 76 eastbound, pa turnpike to 676 will take you longer, 33 minutes

with the average speed around 41 miles per hour. then 476 northbound to 95, and 76, the average speed, 61 miles per hour. that drive will take you closer to 15 minutes. coming up, i'll go over all the cleared construction projects. chris? as philadelphia prepares for pope francis's visit, we have a much clearer picture of how the tight security will transform the city. fencing and metal detectors will block off miles of center city last month. matt delucia is live along the ben franklin parkway to show us what we can expect in this security zone that the mayer announced yesterday. >> reporter: first it was the traffic box, now we have two security zones that will offer limited access during the pope's visit. this area along the ben franklin parkway, this will be heavily restricted as you mightç imagi. the mayor's office yesterday unveiled more of the city's plan

to prepare for the papal visit. essentially these security perimeters will go into effect the night of thursday, september 24th. we did learn there will be a fence with entry points where people will have to walk through a metal detector and there will be no vehicles allowed inside that zone. the second, wider perimeter will be in place to protect the fence. vehicles will have to be removed and any vehicle that wants to go back in will have to be screened. as far as city government, thursday 24th through monday 28th. the city will operate essential services only. if you have any critical business or you have to pick up groceries or prescriptions, anything like that, get all of that done before that weekend. the city says the primary goal is to allow the 1.5 million or so people the ability to walk. where we are at the art museum, it's about five miles away from camden and new jersey has been putting together their own pope plan.

more on that coming up at 4:30. live at the art museum, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. we now know philadelphia public schools will be closed an extra day for the papal wednesday. classes are canceled wednesday the 25th through friday the 25th. workers are cleaning up the city ahead of the pope's visit, that includes rounding up these. abandoned bicycles. the city crews collect these bikes every year but this year has special urgency. the bikes will be fixed up and donated to local children. the upcoming security changes will have a big impact on businesses in center city. coming up at 4:15, we'll hear what some workers are hoping will happen to give them peace of mind before the pope arrives. nbc 10 was the first local news station to visit the pope's homeland of argentina. jim rosenfield did that.

we'll bring you an encore showing of "the people's pope," looking at life of jorge bergoglio before he became pope francis. that's right here on nbc 10 tuesday at 7:00. a jury found anthony reeder guilty of drunk driving. he crashed into the front porch of a home in 2012. reeder claims someone else was driving that night. in gloucester county, rescue crews freed a driver trapped beneath the tractor-trailer on the new jersey turnpike. here's what that looked like around 9:30. it took firefighters half an hour to cut the victim free. the northbound lanes of the turnpike were shut down for about 90 minutes. look at this video out of north jersey, a school bus crashing yesterday morning in

irvington. the driver told police her brakes failed. the bus rannen nen an intersect >> one kid's booth broke. one kid was bleeding from their mouth. it was bad. >> none of the injuries were life-threatening. police are checking out the bus's brakes. police say taylor çhecht w up loading and distributing explicit images of children. a few weeks ago we told you about alex capaso, he was arrested on child porn charges as well. police say he abused a 5-year-old girl and sent photos of the abuse to an undercover agent.

in new castle county, the town of elsmeir rejected a proposal that would allow people to openly carry guns in public buildings. the mayor wanted elsmere to follow restriction in new castle county buildings. council voted down that ban last night. happening today in new castle county, a dui task force will set up checkpoints in newport hoping to take impaired drivers off the road. it's part of a six-month long campaign across delaware. last year almost half of traffic deaths in delaware were caused by alcohol or drugs. students in the philadelphia school district have exactly one month of summer left. and today the district is teaming up with more than 100 organizations to help families get ready to go back to school. from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at high school of the future on parkside avenue, parents can get information on everything from

transportation and lunch programs to uniforms and registration. well, if you're trying to squeeze the most out of your summer and heading down the shore, you may get a free pass on tolls. the new jersey lottery is promoting fast play. it's picking up the bill for the tolls at the egg harbor toll plaza on the ac expressway. here's the thing. you'll have to be traveling eastbound between 9:00 and 10:00 to get that free ride. and speaking of the new jersey lottery, you could soon step. tickets. the lottery commission. the bill is on its way to the government's desk for his signature. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> eight minutes after 4:00. 67 degrees right now. the temperatures are running cooler this morning. we're in for another nice day. but it's going to be a warmer afternoon with low humidity staying with us through the day.

that is making for a cool start. a warming trend starts today. we're up to 84 yesterday, upper 80s this afternoon. the heat, though, builds over the weekend. looks like we'll be in the 90s starting tomorrow. heading out the door right now, 56 degrees in doylestown, philadelphia 68 and millville in the 50s with clear skies this morning. a clear, dry view of beach avenue, that's the view from the milli marquis de lafayette in cape may. cape may will warm into the 80s this afternoon. no sign of serious clouds. the cape may area, a few scattered thin clouds. the rest of the area is in the clear. with sunny skies we will top that 84 yesterday. the satellite will likely stay clear on through the weekend. 71 degrees is where we'll be at 8:00 this morning. by lunch time, the temperatures climb into the upper 80s and this evening we'll see them cool down into the 70s and 80s by early evening hours. the temperatures will be climbing today.

the pocono mountains reach into the low 80s. 81 degrees for mt. pocono, reading and allentown, 87 this afternoon. bright sunshine for norristown, trenton and mt. holly. 88 degrees for eep ach of those locations. look at the warmup for cape may and vineland. 88 degrees this afternoon.ç sunny skies, 86 for wilmington. definitely warmer than yesterday. the temperatures also climbing for swedesboro and drexel hill. weekend forecast with a look at 90s when i come back in ten minutes. >> it may feel more like august this weekend. ten minutes after 4:00 now. let's get an early check of highways and see if there's anything out there that will slow you down this morning. nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter brittney shipp is here right now. brittney? >> i want to show you some of the cleared projects out there. this is either cleared construction or areas where we saw lane restrictions. there was a vehicle fire reported on the schuylkill

around exit 332 to exit 330. that's now been cleared. road work on i-95 exit 51 and the new jersey state line. that's also been cleared. with if you take any of these ways to work, the good news is you don't have to leave extra early. this is the schuylkill westbound, city avenue to green lane. if you remember yesterday that truck lost its load of dry wall. there were lane restrictions. they've cleared up all the roads. everything should be fine as you head to work. i'll be checking twitter and bring you another update coming up. chris? there's a new report of survival amid the wreckage of the deadly blast in china. we'll tell you about an amazing rescue there at the site of the deadly warehouse explosions. plus, buying guns at the local convenience stores. that's what two little boys did in a local county. where that sale happened and what police are doing about it.

you're trying to get the guns off the street, now they're selling them to 9-year-olds? >> that outrage in a bucks county community after two boys went to a convenience store for a candy and soda and came back with guns. bristol police say those local boys went to a 7-eleven and returned with two weapons that they bought with change in their pocket. authorities arrested reginald cisco who they say sold a .22 caliber rifle and air gun to those friends. the boys say he approached them in the parking lot of the 7-eleven and asked them if they liked to hunt. >> he offered me two guns for $8. he asked me do you like to go hunting? i said, yes. >> say this is the case. he stored it like this. >> we were going to buy ammo and

stuff and go hunting when the wintertime comes. >> a cousin of the boys alerted police who -- alerted adults rather who called police. investigators found out the rifle had been stolen from a nearby auto repair business on wednesday morning. cisco rema'an behind bars. we're hearing from one of two women rescued from a collapsed row home in center city philadelphia. it has a link to the deadly 2013 collapse that killed six people on market street. this collapse recently happened on butler avenue on wednesday. campbell, campbell is the man charged in the salvation army thrift shop collapse on market street that killed six people two years ago. neighbors near this latest property say that they've been complaining about safety issues for some time now. >> kind of been at the same stage for the long time. the wood, the basic outline of the building. it didn't seem like anyone was

working on it for a while. >> l & i says the building's owner tried to build a house that was bigger than the city allowed. we tried contacting the owner and we're still waiting to hear back. an update from china, rescue crews found a firefighter in the debris of one of these explosions more than 31 hours after the disaster. that firefighter was still alive and is now in stable condition. amateur video captured the blast at a container warehouse in the city of tianjin, china. at least 50 people were killed, including 17 firefighters. hundreds were injured and are still in hospitals there. here's a live look at the scene there, again, tianjin, china. you can see more than 24 hours after these explosions, still smoldering. fire crews are still putting water on it there. this is in an industrial area, still being investigated. exactly what caused the explosion and what kind of materials blew up in that blast. preparing for the pope.

this morning, restaurants, bars, other businesses in philadelphia, they're trying to figure out just exactly how they will cope during the papal visit obviously they want to be there to make money from the throngs of visitors s is in town. the entire parkway is a secure perimeter, including city hall. so is the area surrounding independence hall in old city. some employees and businesses said they still don't know how they're getting to work. many are hoping for the best. >> i'm hoping that they have some sort of way to get us in easier as staff members to run the business. >> and if not? >> if not, then we're screwed. >> mayor nutter says he hopes leaders canç clear up concernsn monday. the city is opening a business resource center, up and running on the city's website. coming up at 4:30 in a live report, we will break down, the restrictions, road closures and

detours in new jersey for the papal visit. this weekend should be a perfect weekend to expand your family. one furry friend at a time. an event called clear the shelters is happening. it's a partnership between nbc 10, telemundo 62 and dozens of local animal shelters. this saturday you can adopt a pet with reduced or wave adoption fees. one of those pets could be a pitbull. how about that? some dog lovers and animal workers say that this breed does get a bad rap. >> there's this sliding scale of behavior and any dog can be on that sliding scale. it doesn't mean the pitbulls are on the end where it's just a dog for protection or just a dog for alarm barking or people in the inner city use them as fighting dogs. that's not true. >> you can really help us out by helping us promote the event and raise awareness. join the conversation on social media, use #cleartheshelters and send us a picture of your

favorite pet. even your least favorite one. all of your pets. send us those photos. be sure to u use #cleartheshelters. find out that information on the nbc 10 news app. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 19 minutes after 4:00. for a lot of people their least favorite weather is humid weather. we don't have that today. humidity is nice and low and the wind has died down. the combination means we have a cooler start this morning. right now 68 degrees in philadelphia. not a lot cooler but a few degrees cooler than it was yesterday in philadelphia. some of the suburbs are down by 5 or 6 degrees. clear view from center city. this is the view from the comcast center which saw plenty of sunshine yesterday. that won't change today. this has changed. the wind is lighter this morning. that is why temperatures are lower. the low humidity, the calm winds have combined with clear skies to give us temperatures that

have come down overnight. the clear skies will continue. another nice sunny day today with temperatures that will be warming into the 80s this afternoon. a little bit warmer than yesterday. at 6:00, though, we'll be at 67 degrees. by 9:00, 74 and then low 80s at lunch time. that's about as warm as most areas got yesterday afternoon. it will be warmer during the afternoon. look at the weekend. here comes the heat. the humidity won't be too bad on saturday. 91 degrees. you'll notice it's increasing along with building heat on sunday. both days will see lots of sunshine. it will be a hot, preseason game for the eagles on sunday afternoon. that won't be the end of the heat either. we have the seven-day forecast to show you how long the steaminess will last in the next half hour. >> when they see t-- that game n nbc 10, pregame starting at 12:30 p.m.

it's only august but some students in philadelphia are already back to school. the global leadership academy charter school in west philadelphia opened yesterday. looks like they're proud to be back there. about five years ago this school abandoned the school district's

calendar to avoid what it calls summer brain drain. that academy believes kids who are out of school for a full three months lose momentum and have to repeat material they forgot over theç summer. >> they had home work packets and things they had to do when they're away from us. when they come in today, they turn in their packets and they get ready to go. >> students there at the school get a longer winter and spring break just in case you were feeling sorry for them. today, a steel beam recovered from the world trade center after 9/11 is at its final resting place in florida. it passed through philadelphia yesterday day. firefighters draped that beam in the american flag yesterday at philadelphia international airport. it has been taken to the kennedy space center in cape canaveral. they've been working for more than two years to acquire this piece. >> a lot of effort by a lot of people to make this happen. we're excited as we can be.

>> as the plane taxied out, the moment was marked with a special water cannon salute, which you did not see pictured there. happening today in montgomery county, a full lineup of performer at the philadelphia folk festival in shanksville. starting tomorrow, big names in music will hit the beaches in atlantic city. how about maroon five, nick jonas and matt mcandrew. they're all her forming sunday. nbc 10 will get a look at the concert space which will stretch five city blocks. we'll have the preview on nbc 10 news at 4:00. if you're a fan of late-night tv, which none of us here in the morning have seen due to our bedtime, you're probably pretty tired. jimmy fallon signed a deal to remain the host of "the tonight show" through the year 2021.
