taken to the hospital with minor injuries. we will keep you updated on any new developments on that story. also tonight, will the pope's visit be a bust for businesses? owners are worried that hundreds of thousands of tourists won't be able to get to their doors. officials on both sides of the river have announced numerous road closures and rigid parking rules lasting several days. >> nbc 10 south jersey bureau reporter cydney long has been talking to businesses in camden today and joins us near the waterfront. >> reporter: i can tell you this entire walkway here along the camden waterfront will be one of two secure perimeters where police and public safety officials guide those faithful to the bridge and beyond to see the pope. so businesses not along this beaten path fear they won't cash in on the devoted crowd. the owner of guido's pizza on market street would love nothing more than to see pope francis up close and personal.

>> i don't think i can be able to go see him because of the business i have here. i'm going to try to be open. >> reporter: he's not sure how big a crowd to expect or if any foot traffic will come his way that weekend. it's uncertain if he will cash in on mass transit videos to the city with closed roads, no parking rules and parishioners guided on a straight and narrow pilgrimage to the bridge to see the pope. are you nervous about the potential loss of business that weekend? >> it's going to be. but you know, it's only once in life. we'll see what happens. >> reporter: some are considering a different marketing recipe. this man will post signs out front and advertise on facebook and if crowds don't reach him, he will get to them somehow. >> i want to try to have a couple, two, three people doing delivery to them, see if we can try to get there. i know it will be a lot of security around. i'm going to do my best. >> reporter: meantime, from

baird boulevard to the bridge, businesses like this citgo station say they may not get a drop of business with only emergency vehicles allowed to pass by. >> we don't know. >> reporter: this stretch of the admiral wilson to be closed to traffic for three weekend nights in a row. the owner telling us today it will remain open for north camden neighborhood customers who will use side roads to fill up. we are asking but it's still unclear if any lunch truck or vendor permits will be granted for concession type sales along this walk to the pope route. as soon as we find out, if we know if that will be the case, we will certainly let you know as well. i'm cydney long, nbc 10 news. local businesses in philadelphia are also on edge about the pope's visit. now that they know where the security zones are, local eateries in fairmont say they plan to be open to greet the 1.5 million guests who will come to see the pope. though there is some

frustration, restaurants say they have had little communication about what those security zones will actually mean to their bottom line. >> i live in new jersey. they are talking about closing ben franklin bridge. so i'm going to come to work and not fly. >> people are wondering where they will park as cars in security zones will be towed away. >> the source of all that anxiety is this. the new traffic box released yesterday which includes restricted areas where no cars will be allowed and where pedestrians will have to pass through a security fence to get in. this is raising a lot of questions. how much will residents and businesses be inconvenienced and is it necessary. a security expert will break it down in the next half hour. now to your first alert weather. a great day to spend some time at the jersey shore. >> oh, yeah. nbc 10 here in atlantic city. beach goers enjoying a sunny stroll along the boardwalk this afternoon.

significant clouds or showers. we will see if that changes with the seven-day. take a look at this right here. this small experimental plane crashed in lehigh county this morning. skyforce 10 over the scene here. the pilot survived, was alert. police worked to prevent additional problems in the aftermath of this crash. >> we are concerned right now, we still have crews on scene. we will be putting our haz/mat unit responder, we will put in booms across the water and such for any fuel or fluid that leaked from the plane. >> the faa is now investigating what caused that crash. skyforce 10 over the scene of a house that partially collapsed in north philadelphia this afternoon. the home on north lawrence street was vacant. nbc 10 just got off the phone with l & i, who says it was under construction but all demolition permits had expired last october. no one was hurt. l & i has deemed it an unsafe

property and will contact the contractor about appearing for a hearing. get ready for delays beginning this weekend if you use the delaware memorial bridge. crews will start painting the bridge so there will be lane closures in both directions. the nearly $13 million project runs through late november. when can you expect the biggest delays? we found out the worst of it will be on fridays between noon and 6:00, saturdays from 8:00 to 5:00, and sundays from 10:00 until 7:00. some commuters headed down the shore, it paid off to take the atlantic city expressway. for an hour this morning the new jersey lottery paid tolls for drivers at the egg harbor toll plaza. part of a promotion for the new lottery game fast play. there are four different versions and tickets cost between $1 and $5. since august 2nd they have had three top prizes of $25,000 winners. if you owe the sticity of trenton money, now is the time

to pay up. the city has hired a collection agency to be in charge of collecting an estimated $2.9 million in trenton municipal court fines beginning october 1st. a fee of 22% will be added to the all the fines collected by the agency. to avoid those, stop by trenton municipal court. eagles head coach chip kelly met with a family of a fallen philadelphia police officer today. cell phone video shows kelly meeting with sergeant robert wilson iii's family at training camp at the linc. you can see him signing autographs and posing for photos. you might remember sergeant wilson was shot and killed during a robbery at a video game store in north philadelphia back in march. this isn't the first time kelly has paid tribute to sergeant wilson. he also attended his viewing earlier this year. the eagles coach even brought some footballs along for wilson's sons. >> so nice there. now to the business of coaching. he made a big announcement today at eagles training camp. fans will have to wait longer to see their new quarterback in action. >> coach chip kelly announced

that sam bradford will not play in the team's first preseason game on sunday. amy fadool of comcast sports net joins us now. eagles fans have a lot of hope riding on bradford this season. should they be worried about this? >> it doesn't appear so. chip kelly will tell you that yes, it's way too early to worry but that's probably not going to stop eagles fans who want to see what they traded nick foles for. this is chip kelly's team. he will do it his way. >> he's been out here just for two weeks. i think the other guys got a little base and i feel comfortable putting them in. >> i think it is a little disappointing but i'm excited about the opportunity next week. can't wait to get out there and play against the ravens. >> bradford's loss is tim tebow's gain. he and matt barkley will play in most of sunday's game. >> i'm looking forward to it. it will be a lot of fun just playing ball. i love that. it's something i have been doing since i was a little boy. i love playing and it's a blessing to be out here in practice and everything. it's also fun to really strap it

valley, where the children were sleeping. by the time park rangers arrived, both had children were dead. park officials haven't released the victims' ages and the incident is under investigation. boaters were allowed back on the colorado river contaminated by millions of gallons of toxic mine sludge. the environmental protection agency said contamination levels have dropped since the spill. the waste spilled into a river in durango. that water is used for livestock and to irrigate crops from colorado to new mexico. history was made in havana, cuba today. >> the american flag was raised over the u.s. embassy to mark reestablishing diplomatic relations between the u.s. and cuba. nbc's gabe gutierrez has the story. >> reporter: a truly historic day here in havana. secretary of state john kerry making an unprecedented call for change here in cuba saying the people of the island would be served by a genuine democracy. >> decades of good intentions

aside, the policies of the past have not led to a democratic transition in cuba. >> reporter: he did so as the stars and stripes were hoisted here outside the u.s. embassy for the first time in 54 years. he was joined by three marines who actually lowered that flag back in 1961. when the u.s. severed diplomatic ties with cuba. this flag raising ceremony was broadcast live on state-run tv and radio and people throughout the country were watching very closely. there are still deep differences between these two countries. most notably the u.s. trade embargo. >> president obama and his administration already advocate for and support the lifting of the embargo. >> reporter: of course, lifting it would be up to congress. secretary kerry says that for the first time, now the u.s. looks at cuba not just as an enemy or rival but a neighbor. back to you. >> gabe gutierrez there. traveling tribute to those who

made the ultimate sacrifice in the vietnam war. you can now visit the vietnam traveling memorial wall in the lehigh valley. it's on display at the moore township recreation center, northampton county. the wall is a smaller replica of the vietnam veterans memorial in washington, d.c. it contains the names of the more than 58,000 service men and women killed or missing in action in vietnam. we spoke to the wall manager who was touching up their names. >> it's the first step in the healing process for a lot of vets, their family members to be able to come out and see a loved one or somebody they served with, fought alongside. >> the wall will remain on display through 8:00 a.m. monday. today marks the 70th anniversary of the day ja mpan surrendered to the united states, marking the end of world war ii. people celebrated in the streets, leading to the most famous kiss in u.s. history, that timeless photograph showing a soldier kissing a nurse in a white dress in times square.

today, hundreds of couples gathered around a 25 foot tall poster of that iconic photo as they recreated that kiss for the cameras. huge strides in philadelphia for more than 50 wounded soldiers, taking part in the three day event called the soldier ride. severely injured vets cycled a 12 mile course that began and ended at lincoln financial field. tomorrow, they will ride 28 miles in new jersey. the health and wellness program is put together by the wounded warrior project. 13 people are being treated for exposure to rabies after a kitten tested positive for that deadly virus. the kitten was found back in mid-july. family took it in and a few days later, took it to a vet. the kitten died a short time later. the staff that handled the kitten and the family that took care of it are all being treated. another shark sighting near a beach on cape cod. this one caught on tape. the shark was swimming very

close to shore thursday evening in provincetown, massachusetts. no one was swimming nearby. they believe the seal population may be what's attracting more sharks to those shores. it was another great day to get outside, hit the links. nbc 10 at camden county golf academy's driving range in pennsauken. it's going to be pretty good for that tomorrow, too. it will be a little bit hotter and sunday, little bit hotter than that and more humid. we have a heat wave on the way. a fourth heat wave of the season. the humidity's going to be creeping up. tomorrow's humidity will still be pretty low. then it starts going up. we've got a number of dry days ahead. today certainly a dry day. visibility, great. the air is clean. and no rain anywhere nearby. 87 degrees, relative humidity only 36%.

it is now 83 in pottstown and west chester. those are generally cooler spots. even allentown and reading, farther to the north and west. 86 is the last check in millville and little bit cooler right at the shore. the reason for that, there's the sea breeze coming in. so lewes, delaware, down to 80. sea isle, 81. atlantic city marina at 78 degrees. most places are several degrees warmer than we were this time yesterday. that trend is going to continue each day up until at least monday. we don't have any kind of rain nearby. there were some showers up in new york state but they are headed more toward maine than toward us. at the shore, it's just going to be a terrific weekend again. this will be the seventh straight pretty good weekend without significant rain at the shore.

and we don't get streaks like that very often in summertime. 82 on saturday with the sea breeze coming in and the sea breeze coming in a little bit sooner on sunday, bringing the temperature down a couple degrees. goes up a couple degrees in the poconos. mix of sun and clouds, just a slight chance of a shower. for the eagles on sunday, we have been telling you about it for days, going to be hot and humid. 86 at kickoff, 92 degrees and feeling like 95 by the time the game is in the fourth quarter. now, the heat building up, coming in tomorrow and then it stays with us for sunday and monday and tuesday and the difference in the computer models from yesterday to today is that it keeps the heat in virtually all week. yesterday a couple days ago, it was bringing a little bit more comfortable air in later in the week but not now.

we keep looking into the tropics, august 15th to october 15th, the historical peak of hurricane season, and there is nothing there in the gulf of mexico, caribbean sea, much of the atlantic, but we are starting to see way, way out in africa some of those big blobs of thunderstorms that tend to come up and end up being some of the strongest storms. anything that develops off of africa is going to run into some of this super dry air. a lot of conditions unfavorable for tropical development as we go into this historical peak of the season but the el nino in the pacific is taking care of business and preventing that from happening. clear and comfortable tonight, 67 for the low in philadelphia, 60 north and west. during the day tomorrow, lot of sunshine, little hotter than today. a few degrees. but the humidity is still tolerable. then the seven-day forecast, hot day for the phillies on sunday.

park. an ocean county woman faces drunk driving charges after a crash where she had her 6-year-old in the car. toms river police say jennifer hyman tried kicking officers as they put her in handcuffs tuesday night. investigators say she crashed her jeep into a car at cedar grove road and bay avenue. the other driver had minor injuries. hyman is charged with dwi along with child neglect and resisting arrest. thieves target two local bakeries. take a look at the video here. this guy is not lying down for a nap. he back crawled his way beneath a security gate at this south philadelphia bakery. once he got inside, he took money from the cash register and a tip jar, too. if you recognize this guy right here, police want to hear from you. a family fixture in front of a popular montgomery county bakery is gone. surveillance video showing a man and woman in front of nano's bakery in hatborough. the man kicks the bench as if to see if it's bolted down, then picks it up and takes off.

huge crowds, security fences, roads being closed, neighbors in philadelphia will be dealing with all of that for days thanks to security measures during the pope's visit. >> that has so many wondering how they are going to just live their day-to-day lives. joining us is an associate clinical professor of homeland security at security management at drexel. >> dr. white, thanks for being here this afternoon. we spoke with you last week when the city announced the highway closures released it's so-called traffic box. yesterday we got so much more information, lot of detail about that box and the security restrictions that will be in place. you were a former officer with canada's military intelligence service.

you were involved in managing large security details like this very one right here. in your opinion, how does this plan look to you? >> well, as we see the plan today it's much different than what we were initially hearing. we heard a lot of rhetoric, there was a lot of chatter out there. there was no narrative along with what we were seeing. i think this is a pretty intense plan and it seems to cover all the major bases i think we are looking at. >> dr. white, we received this question from a viewer. she asked us what many people are wondering, what is the reason for keeping philadelphia residents captive and hindering businesses to this extent? can you answer that for her and others who have that same question from a security perspective? >> yeah. i think first thing we want to acknowledge is it's really showing people's frustrations. it's a very pejorative question. i think it shows the frustrations of people's anxiety and not really being told the information they really want to know. i think that it's important we don't have to give out the security intelligence information, but i think it's important that people understand

exactly why we are doing the things we are doing. >> give us some perspective from your experience, why do we need this large perimeter? we understand there's that fine line between giving out too much information, but giving out enough so that people understand why what's being done is being done. >> that's an excellent question. i think the boxes, the area we are covering is very significant and it's important that we continue to maintain that more so not necessarily for the pope's security but for rather the people that are coming in. we will have between one and 1.5 million potential friends coming into our city. we will want to try to keep them as safe as we can. these perimeters will do that. by moving the cars out, that's one less threat. by opening those roads and allowing people to move freely around, i think that's a significant safety issue that i think's important. >> dr. scott white, thanks for your perspective this afternoon. people have to have patience. we know that. there's a lot of information to help residents and businesses

get ready for the impact of the pope's visit. we have compiled all of that on nbc10.com and the nbc 10 app. look for the section preparing for the pope. police say a man found shot to death in camden early this morning was 18-year-old brian spearman. police tell us he was shot in the back of the head on south sixth street and chelten avenue. they haven't arrested anyone or discussed a possible motive. tonight, two women are in custody accused of a string of thefts from an acme in south jersey. police say they stole baby formula twice from the acme in upper township, cape may county. authorities say on july 27th, the women swiped about $600 worth of formula and came back again and took off with more than $1,000 worth. on august 9th, store employees called police after seeing 23-year-old destiny parker and 19-year-old shawnae still in that store. they were both arrested before leaving the parking lot.

from our nbc 10's delaware bureau reporter mark murphy's resignation won't take effect until later this year. governor jack markell praised him for the quote, tremendous progress seen during his tenure. murphy has been a target of criticism from the state teachers union as well as some lawmakers unhappy with his school reform efforts. the governor has nominated steven gadowski to succeed murphy. the state senate will convene the special session in october to consider his nomination. philadelphia police officers in the 35th district surprised a group of kids here at a local rec center today. nbc 10 on hand at the sturges recreation center for the excitement. officers handing out backpacks filled with school supplies. kids who were at the center for their last day of summer camp. pretty happy about it all. we have been telling you about this.

comfortable with the proposed pairing. >> it's about getting to know both the animal and the adopter to make sure it's a good match. >> reporter: angie and her long-time beau melvin jones are in love. with each other and with black and white kitten they are adopting. >> i like it when they purr when you pet them. i can't really explain how i feel about it but it's all coming from here. >> reporter: the kids are grown, giving them a bit of empty nest syndrome. so they pleaded with their no pets allowed apartment complex. after 15 years, the powers that be said yes. >> it does fit within a void. i'm done so i need something to keep my company. someone i can spoil. right? >> reporter: with two phases complete, all that's left is to put their furry friend in its container. a cat named welcome going home with a couple ready to shower it with love.

it all started when police went to arrest a man on a parole violation. he reportedly set fire to his home on staten island. firefighters responded and the man opened fire with an assault rifle and hit the firefighter twice. >> this morning's incident, we had one fire lieutenant who was shot twice, once through the right buttocks and through the left calf. the lieutenant is in stable condition in the hospital. >> after a six-hour standoff the suspect was found dead. right now it's not clear if he was killed by police or he he killed himself. the suspect has 18 prior arrests, had been out of jail for just over a year. police lifted a state of emergency in ferguson, missouri today. that announcement comes after a third straight night of calm. most protest had been peaceful until gunfire broke out sunday night. police shot an 18-year-old black man who they say shot at them and that put the community further on edge. turning now to our decision

deal with the cold football games and it is august so we should expect it to be warm. >> my favorite are the snowy football games. >> no, no, no thanks. >> i just love that. can't wait for football season. it's not exactly football weather out there but it will be coming. got a heat wave coming in the meantime. and the humidity's starting to creep up. it's been great over the last three days. some more dry days ahead. good thing we had all that rain earlier in the week or else we would be really searching for some rain later on in this seven-day. we have a lot of sunshine there. when the phillies come back it will be really hot. 87 right now but the relative humidity is still low, 36%. and got this other heat wave here. we've got several days where we've got a really good shot of getting into the 90s except we may have several more days beyond that. this could be another one of those extended heat waves. we just hope it doesn't get into

the extreme level right now. it does not look like it. we have a bit of a southwest wind bringing the warm air into philadelphia but we've got the sea breeze coming in at the shore, limiting the temperature rise. of course, that's one of the reasons people love going there, because it is cooling down. 79 in cape may harbor while it's well into the 80s farther inland. now this difference is going to be much greater over the weekend as the beaches get cooler and the inland areas get warmer. atlantic city marina, 78 degrees. it will be closer to 90 inland over the next couple of days. you don't see any significant moisture around. the new york state stuff is headed right toward maine or massachusetts, rather than us. and we're not really seeing any moisture that is advancing. so we've got another great forecast at the shore with that 12 straight weekend days in

atlantic city without any rain. six weekends in a row. this is going to be seven. we had a really bad stretch in june but july and august doing good. 82 on saturday before the sea breeze comes in. the sea breeze comes in a little earlier on sunday so the temperature might be a couple degrees lower. but it's still looking pretty good. little bit more cloud cover in the poconos, especially on saturday. just a slight chance of a shower. and the temperature goes up a little bit as we head into sunday. the temperature goes up plenty at lincoln financial. 86 on sunday at kickoff, 92 degrees by the fourth quarter. it feels like about 95. once this 90 plus air comes in here, we are not seeing any significant changes. the redder the color, the hotter the air. you notice it changes at times. that's at night. it gets cooler at night. there's the green. then it gets back to the red again.

now here we are into next wednesday and next thursday. so we're not really seeing any kind of significant cooling in here ending that heat wave as we go through this seven-day period. clear and comfortable tonight, 67 for the low in philadelphia, 60 north and west. tomorrow, a lot of sunshine and hotter but again, the humidity is not going to be real high. so lot of folks will be able to tolerate that. it's up near 90 degrees. the average high is 86 so it's a few more degrees. now the humidity starts going up a little bit on sunday and a little bit more on monday. so by monday, lost people are going to be complaining about the heat and humidity. it will feel like it's more like 98. similar story tuesday. we don't really have a break in this through the rest next week. >> glenn, thank you. new jersey's not used to earthquakes so even a small one

small earthquake rattled parts of central new jersey overnight. >> according to the u.s. geological survey, the magnitude 2.7 quake hit around 3:41 this morning. here's a look at where it hit, about two miles north of bernardsville, somerset county. nbc's brian thompson spoke to residents who felt the impact. >> reporter: it was the animals like sheppy here who most took notice something was wrong with the earth and let their masters know. >> he heard i guess the rattling of the doors and everything, the windows and he did that. he got up and started barking a little bit and basically went into guard dog mode. >> first my cat started jumping around. so they woke me up. all of a sudden it felt like a train hit my house. the bed shook, the house shook. it lasted a couple of seconds and then it stopped. >> reporter: many woke early this morning as the u.s. geological survey confirmed the 2.7 magnitude quake on an offshoot of the ramopo fault

which runs the length of new jersey. there were no reports of damage to homes, no injuries and for many, barely a shrug. >> i said to myself oh, my god i think this is an earthquake. i went back to sleep. >> reporter: a few minutes later a transformer explosion rocked this neighborhood. jcp & l crews responded quickly to make the replacement and restore power to 38 homes. but they were not prepared to say whether or not it was caused by the earthquake. for long-timers, it all came as no surprise. >> i remember back in the '80s when i was living up the road, we had a good one that woke us up like this. this hasn't happened in awhile. >> reporter: new jersey transit noticed the earthquake, did a safety check, found nothing and the trains ran on time for the morning commute. brian thompson, nbc 10 news. coming up next on "nbc 10 news at 6:00," move them out. that's the message to thousands of people in philadelphia when it comes to their cars during

right now at 6:00, people all over philadelphia trying to figure out what to do with their cars when the pope comes to visit. thousands of vehicles will have to move out to make way for pope francis. good evening. i'm jim rosenfield. it is a scramble to figure out how to handle the new traffic plans for his visit september 26th and 27th. there will be three layers of security if you are in the green area, you will be able to drive out but you won't be allowed to drive back in. in the yellow area, no cars allowed at all. the red section, that's going to be fence off the recod off. you have to go through security screening to get inside. nbc 10's deanna durante is live in fairmount. you talked to very frustrated people today? >> reporter: yeah. when you look at that map, the black line that goes around that area is the secure vehicle zone. there can't be any cars parked on the street there and the people are asking what are we supposed to do with them?

>> i haven't been contacted by the city whatsoever. i reached out to local representatives and have received nothing in return. >> reporter: andrew says he tried many times to get answers from the city, like how is he going to get home from work. >> i don't get home from work on friday until after 6:00 p.m. >> reporter: by then the security zones will be in force. what's he going to do with his car and how will he get it back out to go to work? >> am i paying taxes to not stay at my house for the weekend? >> reporter: he's getting out and is not alone. >> i'm not coming down here when the pope comes. i'm not even getting in there. >> i would like to know where they expect everybody to go. >> reporter: she had planned to work from home but now has to get her car off the street. she's getting out of town, too. >> you're lucky if you have a relative you can do that. if you don't -- >> reporter: government officials say they understand the headaches the papal visit will cause but it was the pope who chose philadelphia. >> very happy that philadelphia was chosen. we will be part of what i would consider a huge world event.
