smoldering as flames race toward even more neighborhoods. this morning in washington state, this is what they face -- a firefight so explosive, so unpredictable the national guard was called to help from the air and on the ground. the so called chelan complex fire has been nearly impossible to stop. what began as four small lightning fires here merged into a monster blaze. neighborhoods, a warehouse, a lumberyard lost. 2,700 people forced to flee. the fire stretched 14 miles in some spots, jumping a river, hopscotching toward homes. >> there was fire everywhere around you could look. >> reporter: this morning the west is raging out of control. more than a hundred large wildfires spreading resources dangerously thin. in oregon, idaho, and california, dozens of homes swallowed by flames.
