the feels-like temperature in dover reached 99 degrees a couple of hours ago. about the only relief we can find is at the shore and in the poconos, and also, under some isolated showers that have popped up in the last hour or so. the other thing about them is they're not really moving. so the lower portion of bucks county getting some locally heavy rain for at least a brief period of time. the isolated showers around for another couple of hours and then it all falls apart and it's going to be very warm and very humid overnight tonight, even by 10:00 we are still well into the 80s. talk more about how we will break this heat wave and the storms to come with the seven-day in a few minutes. >> this latest heat wave is hitting just as high school kids are heading out for sports practice and long afternoons in the sun. >> nbc 10's delaware bureau reporter tim furlong is live with more on how coaches are

keeping players safe in this heat. >> reporter: we try to go live in front of stuff actually happening on tv but you can see what's happening here. nothing. because the way they are keeping the kids safe at concord high school, they aren't having them out in the worst of the heat. teams and bands in delaware were just allowed to start practicing on saturday. the road to the state title starts here on brutal hot summer days. when it's this hot even the sign about the christmas trees coming can't take your brain to a cooler place. its saernl not helpi's certainl concord high school marching band. they are in full swing getting ready for the season. >> the concrete gets warm. >> reporter: the band is doing quick sessions with lots of water breaks. they have a long season ahead. >> it's never good. never good. we got the worst temperatures. you got to go from sunburn to frostbite. they are usually wearing a wool uniform which is either not enough or too much. >> reporter: the field hockey team is also out here today. there is plenty of water and a very concerned head coach.

was run over by a vehicle this morning. skyforce 10 was over the scene. you can see a van stopped in the middle of the road. a witness described the scene as he looked out the window at his office nearby. >> the craziest part is i didn't know what had happened. at first all i saw was a person flying through the air. i didn't know what happened until i saw the car stopping and i kind of figured it out. >> we were told the firefighter was alert and responding to authorities but we are waiting to be told about the extent of his injuries. right now, two construction workers are in the hospital after falling four stories off a building and being shocked. it happened in north philadelphia earlier today at 16th and oxford streets. police say the workers came in contact with overhead wires. one worker is in critical condition, the other is listed in stable. indicted congressman chaka fattah will make his first court appearance today. he is calling on law makers to

investigate. rosemary connors has more. >> reporter: the congressman is concerned that federal prosecutors went to unconstitutional and illegal lengths to charge him. he even says the lead investigator in the case has questionable motives. maintaining his innocence, congressman chaka fattah is calling on the committee on oversight and government reform to review the handling of the case brought against him by federal prosecutors. a case which the congressman claims is marred by misconduct. in a letter to the committee chairman and ranking member, fattah writes it is no secret that for decades, appropriators in both the house and the senate have been the target of unconstitutional and illegal investigations. he goes on to request that the committee require that the department of justice properly preserve any and all materials related to my case. also in the letter, the congressman accuses federal investigators of violating grand

jury secrecy laws in an effort to embarrass him and among other misdeeds, knowingly making false statements in the indictment. that indictment includes allegations of fattah misusing his congressional influence and stealing taxpayer money along with charitable donations. he is also accused of accepting a secret and illegal $1 million campaign loan during his run for philadelphia mayor. plus prosecutors say he took a bribe from a lobbyist who wanted fattah to help him be appointed as an ambassador. i reached out to congressman t fattah's office earlier. his director of communications says the congressman will have no comment beyond the letter until he addresses the media tomorrow after his court appearance. we will also be there in court and bring you developments throughout the day. i'm rosemary connors, nbc 10 news. >> congressman fattah is married to nbc 10 anchor renee chenault-fattah. renee is referenced in the criminal complaint against her husband. she is labeled as person e and an affiliate of the fattah enterprise. the feds allege she took part in

a scheme to fraudulently sell a car in order to pay closing costs on a vacation home. she is not charged and denies any wrongdoing. renee is on leave from nbc 10. we are getting our first look at a man suspected of driving off after hitting a little girl in northeast philadelphia this weekend. police say mark edwards drove up on the curb and struck the 6-year-old. he is also accused of smashing into several other cars along sylvester street saturday night. witnesses helped track him down. the 6-year-old is in stable condition with several broken bones. we are also getting our first look at four men charged in a weekend drug bust at the hilton of penn's landing. a hotel employee called 911 about suspicious items in a room friday night. police found a large amount of cocaine and a gun. today, they released the mug shots of the four suspects. all four are facing felony charges. it seems a lot of people wanted to see adam levine.

new information on this weekend's beach concert in atlantic city featuring maroon 5. good news for the struggling resort town. take a look at those crowds. sunday's show generated about $24 million for ac's economy. the atlantic city alliance released that figure today. it says more than 50,000 people attended that concert and more than 3,000 hotel rooms were booked as a direct result. 20 minutes of nonstop news continues with an iconic music legend announcing his new tour in a very big way. look at those crowds. so many people gathered outside city hall. skyforce 10 is live over center city where stevie wonder has turned dilworth park into a paradise this afternoon with a surprise free concert. >> nbc 10's cydney long is live in center city where the surprise show is still under way. cydney? >> reporter: this is definitely the perfect way to start the work week on a monday. you can see fans out here

dancing at dilworth park. city employees hanging out the window. they simply cannot get enough of stevie wonder, the musical legend, still onstage now. he took philadelphia by surprise today in the heat of the moment, volunteers set up the stage in record time. it spread quickly on social media. he warmed up acoustically. his first song, "love is in need of love today." take a listen. just performed 15 minutes ago. ♪ also in record time, fans, thousands of them, stood out in this heat waiting for a couple of hours for this popup free performance. they said simply it is stevie wonder, it is well worth it. wonder sharing not only of his talent musically but also with a message of harmony. he shared his vision for what is missing in america and the world today.

fans in new york city. 65 years old, stevie wonder. it was an awesome monday. cydney long, back to you. republican presidential candidate is taking a break from courting voters by heading to court as a potential juror. trump reported for jury duty in manhattan this morning. a large crowd was there to greet him as he arrived in a limo. his appearance in court comes a day after unveiling details of his plan to secure the u.s. border and deal with immigration issues. the gop front-runner was unapologetic as he told nbc news, all undocumented workers have to go. >> we have to make a whole new set of standards and when people come in, they have to come -- >> you will split up families? >> no, no, we will keep the families together. we have to keep the families together. >> you will keep them together out? >> they have to go. >> as for trump's jury duty, he has been called before but did not appear. however his campaign says he

never received those summonses. ohio governor and republican presidential hopeful john kasich picked up a key endorsement this morning. alabama's governor robert bentley announced he is backing kasich. that's bentley on the right, kasich on the left. the endorsement came with an exchange of footballs that gives kasich new support in the south. >> i am not intimidated by you, sir, or anyone else. >> an eventful appearance for wisconsin governor and republican presidential candidate scott walker today. walker was met by pro-union protesters as he rallied supporters at the iowa state fair. he acknowledged hecklers several times during this morning's speech. there are currently 17 republican presidential candidates in the 2016 race for the white house. among them, new jersey governor chris christie. on the democratic side, there are five candidates with hillary clinton in the front-runner spot at this point. more than 100 wild fires are burning across the west,

destroying dozens of homes and causing severe damage. thousands of people have been forced to evacuate. today's crews are focused on saving structures and homes and moving toward containing the fires. the u.s. forest service says it's spending $100 million a week on these fires and next week, they will have gone through their annual -- entire annual budget. many people in the bay area woke up the a sharp jolt this morning. a magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck in berkeley. the quake was felt in downtown san francisco, out to the east bay. people reported broken plates and reported it on social media. you can see two adorable dogs trying to enjoy a nap when the earthquake hit. gus and gizmo were snoozing peacefully before it started. the earthquake produced seven aftershocks. fortunately, no reports of any injuries. a massive explosion ripped through bangkok, killing at least 27 people and injuring

dozens more. police say a bomb planted on a motorcycle exploded near a shrine that's popular with tourists and locals. you can see the chaos at the scene. no one has claimed responsibility for the attack. thailand's defense ministers say the perpetrators intended to destroy the economy and tourism of the country. police are looking for more explosives at that scene. in china, 114 people are dead after a warehouse explosion last week. 70 people are still missing. authorities confirmed there were several hundred tons of toxic chemicals on the site at the time of the blast. officials also said they sealed all waterways leading into the scene from the blast site. angry residents took to the streets to protest the way the chinese government has handled the warehouse explosion. those whose homes were destroyed say they need more compensation from the government. new information and pictures of the plane that crashed in indonesia yesterday. you can see the wreckage.

officials now say nearly a half million dollars in government cash was on board that flight. the money was meant to he help poor families. meantime, indonesian officials say they are still searching for survivors. 54 people were on board that flight. police have arrested a man accused of killing the granddaughter of actor morgan freeman. authorities say they found the 33-year-old lying injured in a new york city street. medics rushed hines to harlem hospital. morgan freeman said in a statement quote, the world will never know her artistry and talent and how much she had to offer. members of a u.s. army sky diving team are being offered counseling today after a deadly accident at an air show in chicago. a member of the golden knights demonstration team died while performing a stunt yesterday. sergeant first class cory hood collided with another sky diver midair and was knocked out. he hit a building and fell to the ground. hood has served five tours of duty in iraq and afghanistan.

philadelphia is remembering one of the most tragic fires in the city's history. eight firefighters died battling flames here at the gulf oil refinery in south philadelphia 40 yees ago. there were tears this morning as a group that included family members of the victims came together. they marked the anniversary at the firemans hall museum in old city. august 17th, 1975, signaled the start of the fire at the refinery. it took six days to bring it under control. when it was all over, eight firefighters died, 14 others were injured. mayor nutter was among those who spoke today. >> we honor their sacrifice today, the 40th anniversary of their passing. and every day, we should acknowledge them and so many more. >> investigators determined the fire was caused by the overfilling of a tank at the refinery. today a new resource opened

up for business with questions about how the pope's visit will impact their daily operations. a hotline with specialists from the government opened at noon. the agency put together the idea as it became clear just how difficult things were becoming for merchants. the hotline will be open monday through friday 9:00 to 5:00. you will find a link right on the nbc 10 news app. the philadelphia zoo will modify its hours during the pope's visit. it will be open to the public on friday, september 25th. it will be closed the following saturday and sunday, though. essential personnel will be staying on site through the weekend to care for the animals and the zoo will be back to normal on monday, september 28th. the first place pope francis will see when he visits philadelphia will of course be an airport. >> it will be in a facility most of us never get to see. nbc 10's vai sikahema gives us a tour. >> reporter: the american airlines boeing 777 that carries the pope from new york will land here at atlantic aviation near

philadelphia international and leave from here as well. john butterworth has been the general manager here for almost 30 years. this is the same terminal that services all of philadelphia's major sports teams. >> we handle the eagles, the sixers, the phillies, the flyers. on any given day we will get between 30 and 40 arrivals. this will be 100-fold what we are accustomed to. that entire week is going to be a free-for-all. >> reporter: the last thing the pontiff will do is meet with 500 volunteers and vips in this hangar before he heads back to rome. this cavernous hangar can store up to six or seven lear jets at a time. don't plan to crash this party because the road in and out of this small airport will be closed most of the weekend that the pope is in town. in south philadelphia, i'm vai sikahema, nbc 10. >> the airport may be the first and last stop for the pope in philadelphia, but in between, he will see a lot of what our

a lot more humid than last week. the thunderstorms returning to a good bit of the area, at least in a couple days. phillies returning home tomorrow night and it is going to be a hot and humid one. it's 94 degrees right now and with a relatively high humidity at least compared to the weekend, it feels like it's 96. we have certainly seen worse humidities than that with 94 degree temperatures in the past. but this is now three days in a row. tomorrow will make it four. wednesday will be a close call but i think later on during the week, we are going to be well below the 90 degree mark. even though it's going to stay humid. 94 in philadelphia. you can see that southwest wind flow. 93 in reading and mt. holly. look at the trenton temperature, 80 degrees. think something's wrong with the instrument? maybe not, as you'll see. the southerly winds keeping the shore nice and cool and comfortable. near 80 degrees. the ocean temperature's gone down. 67. and the feels-like temperature's

well into the 90s. dover got up to 99 a couple hours ago. now, we can see that there is an air quality alert during the day today that goes up to 11:00 tonight. the air quality not so great. but it's certainly improving in parts of bucks county and mercer county, new jersey, because we have some slow-moving showers that are affecting those areas. that's why it's down to 80 degrees in trenton. it's raining there. in a good bit of lower bucks, too. these things are not moving very much so we will keep an eye on them and see if they do trend in any particular direction. this one looks like it's moving a little to the south and east. it's just past ewing into downtown trenton itself and lawrence township in new jersey. as we go through the night tonight, we have just the isolated showers. everybody else is warm and humid through the rest of the night and into tomorrow morning. couple of places in the 60s but most of us will be in the 70s

when we get up tomorrow morning. it should be dry although on the muggy side. the sea breeze comes in tomorrow. some isolated showers late in the afternoon, after we get into the 90s once again. then the more significant showers start to come in on wednesday and especially thursday. the hot weather that's with us over the next couple days, watch it retreat, head down to the south later on during the week. so we don't think the heat wave will last all week. for tonight, it is going to be very warm and humid. the temperature down to 75 in philadelphia after the isolated early showers. then tomorrow, temperatures about similar to today and humidity up a little bit. feeling like close to 98 degrees at the peak. the seven-day forecast, near 90 on wednesday with just a chance of storms. better chance, more likely

the pocono mountains. the rest of the area has pretty much been getting up into the 90s over the weekend with relatively low humidity. 91 on saturday, 93 on sunday. so far, 94 today. probably around 94 tomorrow. wednesday will be the close call. what's not a close call is how much the humidity has really increased. 94 in philadelphia and northeast philly. 93 in reading. 85 in mt. pocono. 90 degrees in georgetown, delaware. the feels-like temperature, when you add in the humidity, it's feeling like 96 in reading. it got as high as 99 in dover for the feels-like temperature. the heat and humidity helped to trigger some isolated showers around a part of the area, as you can see, during the last couple hours. if anything, they're weakening. this one in upper montgomery county really has weakened. the one near trenton is the only strong one. the one in lower bucks weakened quite a bit. this one just to the north of

trenton at least for the heaviest part of it. we will see when thunderstorms will become more widespread with the rest of the seven-day in a few minutes. a busy road with a dangerous reputation is the focus of a major safety effort in south jersey. >> it is route 539 in ocean county. a two-lane highway through the pinelands that many people use to drive to and from the trenton area, shore destinations and military bases. nbc 10 jersey shore bureau reporter ted greenberg is live in little egg harbor township to tell us what authorities are doing to help save lives. ted? >> reporter: for at least the next month, police are stepping up their patrols here on route 539 as they are really hoping drivers take notice and respond. it's a road where drivers are known to take risks. >> it's dangerous. it's horrible. >> reporter: ocean county's

route 539, a 38 mile stretch cutting through eight communities -- >> almost like a freeway. >> reporter: -- that's been the scene of numerous tragedies. 11 deadly crashes in just over two and a half years on this mostly rural road with a top speed limit of 55. >> i would say speeding and unsafe passing is definitely an issue out here. >> reporter: manchester township police officer sean cavalcante is watching for aggressive drivers as part of a month-long crackdown that began saturday organized by the ocean county prosecutor's office. >> when we start drilling down on it with the numbers, it's staggering. >> reporter: since january of 2013, route 539 has been the scene of more than 400 non-fatal crashes, 81 alone in little egg harbor township, 99 in manchester township and 145 in plumstead township. >> we have identified this that this is a problem we meaneed to address. >> it's fantastic.

if it saves lives, perfect. >> reporter: the enforcement campaign is being carried out by the prosecutor's office, local police departments and other agencies using a combination of marked and unmarked vehicles. >> at the end of the day we want everybody to slow down out here. >> reporter: so far since saturday, police have given out at least 55 tickets and have also issued dozens of warnings. there are also plans in the works to make safety improvements to the roadway itself. that part of the story is coming up at 6:00. i'm ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. from the delaware bureau, new pictures of a dump truck crash that tied up the morning commute through newark. we are also learning the driver was injured in the crash. no word on the extent of his injuries. it happened this morning on i-95 before exit 4a. the dump truck overturned after being sideswiped by another vehicle. delaware state police are still investigating the cause of the crash. the government wants to dismiss a lawsuit filed by new

jersey environmental officials against a research project. that project blasted the ocean floor with sound waves to see how sea level rise has changed the coastline. the u.s. justice department wants to dismiss the suit mainly because the project is already finished. environmentalists say the sound waves could harm marine life. there are no plans for similar tests. check out this robbery video featuring a wrestling match for a gun in west philadelphia. police say that's the robber in the red hat, walking into the lancaster hoagie city deli. he tries robbing that customer but the customer has a gun. he's licensed to carry. that gun falls to the ground and the two fight over it. it's the robber who ends up with that gun. he fires one shot. no one is hit, though. he then takes off running. right now he's still on the loose. call philadelphia police if you have any tips. a new study shows children in military families may face extra struggles.

the war on drugs is getting a new battle plan. today the white house announced a $5 million initiative to combat heroin use mostly on the east coast. that plan emphasizes treating addicts over punishing them.

governor jack markell held a news conference today saying this epidemic has got to stop. >> we can't just arrest our way out of this problem. if we are really going to reduce the number of individuals and families who are impacted we have to convince users that treatment is available, that it works, that they can recover and that they can thrive. >> delaware will receive part of that $5 million from the government as it was deemed a high intensity drug trafficking area. we have heard studies over the years debating whether or not coffee is really good for you but now there is evidence that coffee may help some patients suffering from colon cancer. researchers found people with stage 3 colon cancer who consumed four or more cups of coffee per day were about a third less likely to die from cancer. experts say the findings still require more research. children in military families may be at a greater risk for substance abuse and

violence, according to a new study from the university of southern california. researchers surveyed nearly 700,000 children and found that military connected youth reported more incidents of violence and substance abuse than their peers. experts say stress caused from frequent moves or separation from parents may play a big role in these behaviors. two would-be robbers brought along what they thought would be a powerful weapon. >> it was no match to what the convenience store owner was packing. next, see the caught on camera battle when that owner pulled out a giant sword. heat wave number four is hoare. i'm tracking more 90 degrees day and storms later this week.

i was at my shop tied up with a customer when i realized the time. i had to get to the bank before it closed, so i made a break for it. when i got out it was almost closing time. traffic was bad. i knew i was cutting it close. but it was ok. i use td bank. it's got the longest hours and stays open an extra ten minutes every day. i'm sid. and i bank human at td bank. you're about to see a pair of robbers learn an important lesson caught on camera. >> the lesson, don't bring a knife to a sword fight.

two thieves showed up with a foot long knife at a convenience store in pittsburgh friday night. the store's cashier responded by pulling out a much larger sword. he clashed with the thieves at first but the robbers eventually gave up and ran off. >> so he had a sword. >> police are still looking for the robbers. it continues to heat up out there. the temperature went up over the weekend. now the humidity is going up. the combination's making it feel more and more uncomfortable. the 90s continue at least for another day, possibly two. it's going to be a steamy week. we will have more than a couple steamy days as the week goes on. some thunderstorms returning, isolated showers now, but more substantial later on. we are starting to see some buildups in some of these clouds around the philadelphia area and there are a couple showers around as you'll see.

94 degrees right now, the wind is 13 miles an hour. it feels like 96 and it's two degrees hotter than it was this time yesterday. it was hot enough yesterday. 94 in bensalem, 92 in allentown. once again, the cool change in trenton at 80 is because of that shower that has gone through. 88 degrees in dover and that is partly due to wind off the delaware bay. let's see what kind of temperature difference we have between the ocean and inland. today we have it because of the wind direction, more of a south and southeast. north wildwood, 79 degrees. 86 at cape may airport. 80 degrees at sea isle city just a few miles away in oceanview, 87 degrees. similar story in atlantic county. 80 degrees, atlantic city marina. in northfield, 86. farther inland, near 90 degrees. makes a big difference if the wind direction's right. it feels like it's in the mid

90s, 97 in wilmington. that's the highest number this hour. the highest we've seen was 99 in dover a couple hours ago. we have a couple showers around here and some in some populated areas. there's one right near the pennsylvania turnpike and then another one right in trenton, mercer county area. you can see this is drifting kind of southeast, right toward bensalem and parts of northeast philly. the far northeast there. meanwhile, the trenton shower's really weakening as it continues to move toward the southeast. there's that one right toward bensalem. watch out, you're about to get hit with some really heavy rain at least for a little while. you're one of the few people who are going to get it. there's that flow coming out of the south and as we go through the next 24 hours, it's still kind of out of the south. so the humidity's going to stay up. you'll have a few more showers tomorrow afternoon, mostly to

the north and west. now, wednesday, it will become a little more widespread, as you can see by afternoon. so the chances of showers go up as we go through the week. just isolated showers early tonight, 75 for the low in philadelphia, 68 north and west. the wind is pretty light but coming in right out of the south so it will stay humid. it will feel like it's as high as 98 in parts of the area tomorrow. again, just isolated showers then, chance of a little more widespread activity on wednesday. the high near 90 degrees. that would be a close call as to whether we extend the heat wave. i think there will be enough cloudiness and rain around to keep the temperature down thursday and friday. then we tend to dry out a little bit over the weekend and certainly more comfortable as the eagles play again. more than 18,000 animals across the country have new homes all thanks to nbc's clear the shelters campaign.

pittsburgh steelers player james harrison is teaching his children a tough lesson. he made them return their participation trophies because he says they didn't earn them. >> it is a hot topic that has many people chiming in. nbc 10's rosemary connors reports one local psychologist called harrison her hero. >> love it. i absolutely love that someone with credibility and fame came out and said it. absolutely love it. >> reporter: all it took was this instagram post by linebacker james harrison of the pittsburgh steelers to stir the conversation about how and when we reward our children. harrison's sons received trophies simply for participating in a sport. in the post, harrison vowed to return the trophies and said i'm not sorry for believing that everything in life should be earned. >> being able to work through that and cope with the emotions around that and to work harder,

the smooth sounds over the city, putting on a show. stevie wonder pops up into philadelphia for a surprise concert and hundreds brave the heat as you can see to get a glimpse and hear the music legend. people across the region were feeling the heat and the temperatures felt even more oppressive as that humidity kicked in. >> down the shore, beach goers in cape may cooled off from the warm weather but for many of us there is little relief in sight. we are in the middle of yet another heat wave. nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is keeping track of the temperatures. >> that humidity made it feel even hotter out there. >> yeah. the temperature did get above 90 over the weekend but the humidity was pretty low for august. it didn't necessarily feel that uncomfortable. but it's getting steamier and as the phillies come home tomorrow, they are going to be feeling that steam. on saturday we did get up to 91 degrees. it was 93 yesterday, 94 so far today and tomorrow, right around that same level. wednesday is going to be a close
