an arrest in a crime that left a neighborhood shaken. police say a teenager beat a five-year-old girl so badly she was almost unrecognizable. i'm jacqueline london. the girl told police a stranger took her from her bedroom, took out outside and attacked. tonight officers have a 15-year-old in custody. denise is live tonight. >> reporter: she is shocked to learn he is a child himself. he is known in the neighborhood and as you just mentioned he's only 15 years old. the person who police say came into a north philadelphia home to abduct, attack and sexually

assault a five-year-old girl is in custody. the girl's mother told me over the phone tonight she's relieved police made an arrest and spliez surprised to learn the suspect is just 15 years old. [ inaudible [ inaudible ] >> reporter: police say the 15-year-old carried the little girl out of her home on july 28th. beated, stomped and sexually assaulted her and left her in the back yard under a pile of brush. the teen suspect is known to freak the north philadelphia neighborhood where the attack happened. hopkins says she's fortunate that her daughter survived the attack and healing from her physical and emotional injuries with the support of family and friends. >> she's no resilient to not let

what happened to her so negatively. she's a fighter. >> reporter: the 15-year-old faces some ten charge including kidnapping, sexual assault and attempted mord. i'm denise that cat to, nbc news. >> gun fire kills a man and injuries a woman. someone keyed the word "rack" on a car parked nearby. police found it on the street where the shooter opened fire. the man was shot in the stomach, the woman was shot in the foot shp she's expected to survive. the killer is still on the loose. take a look at this. a would but robber chose the wrong deli to hold up. he found himself in a wrestling match with a customer who brought hi own gun.

dug, the fight led to a gunshot but it didn't lead there. >> reporter: it was a succession of bad decisions on the part of a robber who picked on an armed customer inside a store full of security cameras. the customer is already at the count are as police say the robber in the red hat walks up. >> he was trying to purchase something and then the roper stand behind and he attack him. >> reporter: sam owns hoagie city and asked that he not show his face as he described what happened saturday. >> i see them fighting. both of them down. and then all of the sudden one guy, the robber, i see him pointing the gun. >> reporter: detectives say the customer in the green shirt was carrying a legal weapon that fell out during the struggle. the robber got it, pointed and fired. the round hit the ceiling vent as the customer continues to go off the robber chasing him out of the store. >> i really feel not

how hot will it get tomorrow? >> it's going to be a lot like today. it was hot, hazy and humid. we're in another heat wave which i'm sure you noticed. today we hit a high of 94 degrees. over the weekend we were in the 90s. we're going to say in the heat wave even tomorrow, mid 90s wick going to feel like the upper 90s, closer to 100 for a couple of air areas. right now we're try around most of the area. there is rain back off to the west. eventually that will get here but not tomorrow for most of the area. temperatures are still very warm. most of us are around 80 degrees at the moment. as we go into tomorrow morning, temperatures are going to stay warm aerp humid. 8:00 a.m. 77 degrees, 10:00 a.m. 80 degrees. the humidity is going to make it feel hotter. i'm going to show you when the rain relief will get here and the chech chur relief too.

that's straight ahead. philadelphia business owners are doing what they can to prepare for the hope. today the city launched a hotline to answer questions from businesses about how the pope's visit will impact their daily operation. nbc 10 spoke to a general manager who said they haven't decided whether to stay open that weekend. >> and so we're trying to gather as much information as possible, final concrete information from officials so that we can determine if we can open or not. >> the market needs at least half of its businesses to agree to stay open for it to stay open when the pope is in town. even the philadelphia zoo is getting ready for the pope. the zoo will be open on friday september 25th, but it will be closed the follow saturday and sunday. essential personnel will stay through the weekend to care for the animals. >> and you can learn more about the pope's visit by tapping on

says his virtual assistant helped rescue him in tennessee. last month sam ray became pinned under his 5,000 pound truck. when he tried to get free, he accidentally activated siri on his phone. >> you get angry and you're like why in the world are you going off. >> but this time he realized siri could help. so he said call 911 and got the help he needed. ray suffered several broken rib, a crushed kidney and burns but he says he's happy to be alive. tracy morgan is coming home to 'saturday night live." nbc announced that he will host snl on october 17th. morgan was seriously injured in a crash on the new jersey turnpike in june of last year. that crash killed his friend. morgan was still using a cain when he appeared on the "today"

8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, warm and humid, temperatures will be around the mid 70s. i think for most of the area, mid to upper 70s and we'll still seeing the sunshine. with the air mass in place giving us the heat wave, it's sparking an air quality alert for tomorrow. sensitive individuals, this is unhealthy conditions for them, mainly the elderly, those with asthma and children. this shows you the impact of the heat wave in place. it's causing unhealthy pollution levels. we have rain off to the west that's slowly moving in this direction. tomorrow will be a mostly dry day. can't rule out an isolated shower like we saw to today but mostly dry with the heat around. tonight we stay dry, warm and humid. tomorrow through the afternoon, a lot like today. hot, hazy and humid with the humid making it feel closer to the upper 90s. actual temperatures will be in the mid 90s. wednesday rain chances are going

to go up just a bit. i think we'll have a better chance of seeing some scattered showers or thunderstorms in the afternoon. better rain chances for thursday and friday. that's going to help break the heat wave. tonight, warm and humid, mid 70s in philadelphia for the low, then tomorrow hot and humid day, temperature 92 to 95 degrees. feeling closer to 98 degrees. so you can say it feels closer to 100 in some areas and we'll continue to see plenty of sunshine, continuing to bring us the heat. by wednesday we have a better chance of thunderstorms, highs still around 90 degrees. we still expect to be borderline on the heat wave on wednesday. thursday and friday, 87 degrees and so far going into the weekend it actually looks better, mid 80s, less humidity for the eagles on saturday and it looks dry. a pittsburgh steeler is teaching his children a lesson
