right now at 11:00 -- it was a messy start for some in new jersey. lightning knocked out power to some people here. but the rain and lightning have moved on. look at this. a nice day outside. live look at city center. brittney shipp is here with the forecast. not a bad friday. >> not a bad way to end your work week. we'll see the humidity decreasing and it will be comfortable out. temperaturewise, 70 degrees in the poconos. 78 in allentown.

781 in wilmington. 79 currently in wildwood. your city planner shows over the next couple of hours by 4:00 p.m., we'll push into the high 80s, 81 degrees. we'll see breezy conditions throughout the day but dryer air is moving in and our humidity will go down. you'll feel a difference today, definitely tomorrow as we head into the weekend. by 7:00 p.m., temperatures at 84 degrees. yesterday was very humid, but as we head into the day, you'll notice dryer air coming in from the northwest and that will set us up for a comfortable start to your saturday. sunday we'll see a little more cloudiness. as far as today is concerned, expect sunny conditions, less humid. temperatures ranging between 85 and 89 degrees. i'll go over what to expect if you want to head down the shore this weekend, plus your eagles forecast. as we mentioned earlier, strong storms earlier this morning left dozens without

power and others dealing with flooded streets, stranded cars. nbc10's matt delucia shows us what happened in north wildwood. >> reporter: the flooding came hard and fast in north wildwood this morning. overwhelming streets and storm drains with several inches of water. >> hard and fast. it came in and dumped -- well, obviously you can see how flooded it still is. >> reporter: a rough start to a summer weekend. north wildwood resident chris wasn't the only one who woke up to find this. car tires submerged, trash cans floating in the street and the power out. >> the rain kept coming and coming and coming. >> reporter: a lightning strike at 3:00 a.m. knocked his neighborhood into darkness. >> i've been here 32 years. first time i've seen central avenue covered by 4 inches, which is a lot of water. >> around 3:30 in the morning, i

got out and moved my wife's car. >> reporter: all trying to navigate the early morning mess that briefly turned several side streets into waterfront property. the floodwaters quickly receded but the clean-up will be a while. "nbc10 news," i'm matt delucia. >> skyforce10 was over the scene of an accident an hour ago. that car smashed into a home bucks county. police tell us the person inside the car was taken to the hospital. no word on their condition. we also don't know if anyone was inside the business at the time. it's a window treatment business. no word yet on what caused that driver to lose control. philadelphia police are still looking for the killer who ambushed a man as he sat in his car when a gunman walked up and shot 12 shots. the victim made it out of his

car but died on the sidewalk. so far investigators don't have any suspects. don't walk alone. that's the warning from police to women near the cobb creek golf course. a man sexually assaulted women there in two separate incidents. people use this as a shortcut walking to and from work. in the most recent case this week, a man knocked a woman unconscious and assaulted her. in july a man dragged a woman into the woods and attacked her. the women called him a muscular, clean-shaiven hispanic man, about 5'5" in his mid-30s. >> the weather the way it is, people frequent the location to walk around, things like that. we'd ask them to be aware of their surroundings, for women to travel in pairs or have someone else with them. >> investigators don't have any surveillance video but they have something more important and that's dna evidence.

11:04. a former baltimore ravens cheerleader has been scheduled to two years in probation. molly shad dock pled guilty to raping a boy. she must register as a sex offender and continue therapy. federal agents are offering a big reward for a man who robbed a philadelphia post office. a robber pulls a gun and points it at the worker. >> people rob the post office, they're generally after cash, money or stamps. it's really ridiculous. >> now, it's heart to see his face here because he's wearing that floppy hat but he's described as a man in his 50s or 60s with a bushy gray beard. if you think you know who this is, there is a $25,000 reward for his capture.

we have the number for the u.s. postal service hot line on nbc10.com. happening toeshgsd you can buy a papal pass for septa's regional rail in person. those tickets are good for either this sunday -- the saturday or sunday of the pope's visit. you have to go to a septa station to buy these up. can't buy them online like previously. they cost $10 and you can buy up to ten tickets for each day. a live look at 30th street station. today amtrak announced it's adding additional service for the papal visit. extra trains will be running between new york, philadelphia and washington but you have to have a reservation and you won't be able to buy tickets on the same day. so, get those orders in early. and on monday, we'll get a very clear outline from the city of philadelphia on its detailed plan for residents of the city during the papal visit. that's when the city and world meeting of families will release what they call the papal playbook online. we did get a taste of some of that information that's going to be in the playbook yesterday.

for example, people living in restricted areas can leave but they won't be allowed back in. trash and recycling pickup will be suspended friday and monday. also the faa has banned drones in the city that weekend. and listen up, parents and students. the week leading up to the papal visit is going to be a short school week. it's official. city schools will be closed starting on the 23rd. they'll stay closed for the rest of the papal visit. the school reform commission took that vote last night to close the schools on thursday, the 24th. there were already no classes scheduled for the 25th. mayor nutter says he's also considering closing schools on monday, the 28th. they'll make that decision closer to the time of the event. in anticipation of people from all over the world coming here, hospitals outside philadelphia are preparing. nbc10's katy zachry shows us a special service that will allow them to treat patients no matter

where they're from. >> reporter: in a few weeks people from around the world will descend on philadelphia and the surrounding area. many will not speak flish. here at lankenau medical center, that's not a problem. >> ask the patient if the patient is having any chest pain. is it radiating down their arm? do they feel pressure? >> okay, not a problem. >> reporter: which is what it's like for a patient here who does not speak english and needs to communicate with doctors and nurses. a new video interpreter is wheeled to their bedside with a simple swipe and selection of language, a real-time interpreter appears on the screen and can translate symptoms. >> being able to have an interpreter immediately means there will be no delay in care and no delay in care means better and safer care for our patients. >> reporter: doctors and nurses have relied on this service nearly 500 times in the last several months. >> our most common language is spanish followed by russian, korean and mandarin.

>> reporter: it's a new service that will no doubt be put to the test next month when people from around the world flock to philadelphia for the papal visit. pope francis is staying at the seminary across the street and staff expects large crowds to gather in hopes of catching a glimpse. >> we anticipate more than 2 million people descend on philadelphia, that even the day-to-day chest pains, fainting, heat stroke, those things, even normal things that will come through our doors just at higher levels, so we're prepared to meet that capacity. >> reporter: the hospital is teaming up with local police and ems and setting up a first aid tent right in this area, at the entrance to the hospital, just feet away from st. charles seminary where pope francis will be staying and where they're expecting throngs of people to gather. now, that video interpreter we just showed you, that can translate over 200 languages, including sign. we're reporting from wynnewood,

leanne gregg reports. the fires cover 400,000 acres in washington state alone. >> reporter: wildfires are raging in washington state, fueled by strong winds pushing in from the north, forcing more evacuations. the dry brush and windy conditions are a recipe for disaster as the fires grow and shift directions. >> this is an unprecedented c catastrophe in our state. >> reporter: for the first time in the state's history, officials are asking fors ive yan volunteers who have experience operating heavy equipment. also a contingent of australian and new zealand firefighters will be sent to california, oregon and washington. as firefighters push on, they're

also remembering those who died wednesday fighting the flames. tom, just 20 years ago, andrew zajac, 26, and richard wheeler, 21. daniel lyon was one of four firefighters who was hurt. the 25-year-old suffered burns over more than half his body and is now fighting for his life. a reminder of the dangers firefighters face as they battle nearly 100 fires across the west. leanne gregg, nbc news. a high school chemistry lab in new york city exploded last night. three people were hurt. a torch hit a gas line. the force of the blast blew out windows on one floor of the school. people who live nearby said they thought this was an earthquake or a plane crash. a similar situation in downtown los angeles where an electric generator exploded. it shook a 19-story office building last night, causing it

to lose power. some of the pipes inside the building broke, flooding the basement. fire department officials say the structure itself is sound and firefighters quickly put out a fire that started after the explosion. two people were hurt. ♪ that's how you bring the house down. that explosion in downtown l.a. caused the power to go out at the shania twain concert. a secondary power course kicked in and she continued with her show. take a look at this bridge demolition in israel. hundreds of people gathered yesterday to watch the explosions take down the bridge. it's expected to cause traffic delays in an already congested tel aviv. a new lightrail system will be built there.

happening right now, this is a live look at a special day in history. two female soldiers are graduating from the army's gruelling ranger school. let's listen in. >> come to cadence and probably not in a great mood to run at that point. literally, we ran across the field. interestingly enough -- >> he's talking about some of the challenges they faced on that gruelling test in ft. benning, georgia. the two women are the first ever to complete what is considered one of the military's most difficult courses. they are captain kristin grist and first lieutenant haber. they talked to media yesterday. they made their way through that rigorous school alongside 94 male counterparts. the ranger course was first opened to female rangers this year. 189 women began the course in april. two finished along with those men as well.

good morning. our weather is improving because our humidity is going down. we're done with the heat wave. temperatures warmed into the 90s yesterday. today we'll stay in the high 80s. i'm tracking a slight chance of showers along the shore as we get into sunday, but even that looks to be going away. so, a live look outside right now for philadelphia. just a few clouds out there. we're at 82 degrees. a mix of sun and clouds for us. our humidity is at 51%. feels like 83. winds out of the north-northeast gusting up to 21. it's a little gusty out but you'll notice decreasing humidity, that will make it feel more comfortable out. across the region, we're at 70 degrees in the poconos. 77 in reading. temperatures in westchester at 76. 80 degrees in wilmington. closer to atlantic city airport, 80 degrees. we're already at 79 in dover. it is a nice and mild start to the morning. as we push into the rest of the afternoon, we'll just see improving conditions. you'll notice all the rainfall, any thunderstorms are well

offshore. what we'll see the rest of the day pushing into the weekend is dryer air moving into the northwest. that will make it feel more comfortable out. it's going to get rid of all the humidity. as we push into tomorrow, it's going to give us a lot of sunshine. we'll see plenty of sunshine to kick off the weekend. temperatures will drop down a little more. it will be a beautiful start with conditions expected to stay in the mid-80s as we head into saturday. but a closer look at hurricane danny that has strengthened to a category 2 with sustained winds at 105 miles an hour. the movement is to the north-northwest, so it's 930 miles off the coast of the leeward islands. as we push into the rest of the weekend, i'll show you what will happen. the good thing is this hurricane will weaken as it continues to push closer to these islands. monday at 8:00 a.m., we'll keep a close eye on it but we expect the wind speeds to have decreased by 60 miles an hour. it won't be a hurricane as we push into monday, tuesday, weapons. we'll continue to see the dry air working in. as soon as it goes over land, a

lot of the hurricanes weaken as well. it's still going to bring a lot of rain to that region. today our highs will be 78 degrees in the poconos. 84 in allentown. temperatures at quackertown, 83. 86 in mt. holly. if you plan on staying along the shore, get your weekend started early e 86 the high in cape may. temperatures around the philadelphia area, you'll notice no 90s on the map. we'll stay at 88 degrees for philadelphia. 88 in drexel hill. 86 degrees in swedesboro. if you plan to head out to the eagles game on saturday, take a look at these temperatures. it will be a big difference from last weekend. it was hot and humid. now we'll see nice conditions for your tailgating. 82 degrees, really comfortable. by 7:00 when the game starts, mid-70s. it will be a beautiful day to watch football. seven-day forecast shows as we head into saturday temperatures drop down a few degrees.

at 11:30, checking our top stories. philadelphia police say someone shot a man to death as he sat inside his car. it happened early this morning on long shore avenue in the city of mayfair section. the gunman walked up and shot at least 12 shots. so far investigators don't have any suspects. look at this video from skyforce10. a car crashed into a business in bucks county. this was the scene at route 611 in warrington about an hour and a half ago. police tell us one person inside that car was taken to the hospital. we don't know their condition and we don't know if anyone was inside the business at the time. we're getting this breaking news out of camden. skyforce10 is live over kolings road and north constitution road. this is where police tell us

plenty of sunshine, less humid. we have the dryer air coming in from the north and northwest. we'll see wind speeds between 5 and 12 miles an hour. coming up, i'll go over all details on your weekend and a closer look at your eagles forecast. chris? tensions continue to rise between north and south korea after the two exchanged fire yesterday. this morning south korea's defense minister warned the north will face searing consequences if it launches more rockets. meantime north korean leader declared his front-line troops are in a, quote, quasi state of war and told them to prepare for war. the north claims they didn't fire anything yesterday. a claim the south has dismissed as nonsense. 11:30. on to decision 2016 now. three advocacy groups are suing new jersey governor and republican presidential candidate chris christie. they say he used taxpayer dollars to pay for his security details as he's been campaigning for president across the country. the groups want christie to

reimburse that money. christie has argued his campaign shouldn't pay the cost because his state police protection is mandatory regardless of where he is or what he's doing. presidential candidates from both sides are on the campaign trail today. this is a live look at greenville, south carolina, where bernie sanders is pitching to become the democratic nominee. he's been drawing some huge crowds. wisconsin governor scott walker is in manchester, new hampshire, a key early voting state. he's trying to win over republican voters there. once considered a top tier can dashgts walker is now in the middle of the pack in most polls. also on the republican side, senator ted cruz is campaigning at the iowa state fair this morning. and just a short time ago, he took the traditional candidate soapbox to talk to the crowd and take questions. cruz has promised to undue huge portions of president obama's legacy from health care reform to the nuclear agreement with iran. and today donald trump will hold one of the largest town hall meetings of any candidate.

as nbc10 national correspondent edward lawrence, he needs a football stadium to house his supporters in alabama. >> reporter: this is ladd peeble stadium, normally home to college and high school football games. today donald trump will host a town hall in front of a huge crowd. >> there this will be 30,000 to 40,000 people in alabama. >> reporter: trump dominated headlines, making the cover of "time" magazine and forcing gop rivals to focus on immigration. when his closest competitor jeb bush used the term anchor babies in an interview this week, it sparked a controversy. the term refers to babies of illegal immigrants born in the u.s., automatically making them citizens. bush claims ending that would affect rubio and cruz. >> do you think the term anchor baby is offensive? >> no.

if there's another term i can come up with, i'm happy to hear it. what we need to focus on is how to secure the boreder. >> my parents were illegal -- are you -- >> none of the candidates -- they're talking about people illegally in this country. >> reporter: meanwhile new polls show trump is beating rubio and bush in their home state of florida. it helps divert attention away from hillary clinton's troubles. a new poll out shows 53% of democrat voters would like to see joe biden run against her. edward lawrence, nbc news, washington. look at this. the stock market is taking a beating once again. a real nose dive this morning. a live look at the board at the new york stock exchange. stocks are sharply lower in early trading. right now the dow down 318. that's after the stock market had its worst performance in 18 months yesterday. the dow mrujed 356 points yesterday to close just below 17,000. japan's nikkei share average

dropped shortly this morning. fears over china's grow are affecting markets worldwide, also fears about greece's bailout. police serve a search warrant at the home of kiss rocker gene simmons. police say neither simmons nor anyone in his family say suspect in whatever they're looking for there. a representative for simmons says police visited the home to discuss a crime that may have occurred on the property last year while simmons was away on tour. simmons' wife thanked supporters on twitter last night. she tweeted the couple is horrified that someone used their residence for a crime and added, don't forget to change your passwords. sounds like more of a story there. well, it's a parents' nightmare, a children's nightmare, too. children are home alone when two men break into the house. that's what happened to a family in las vegas. but everyone is safe this morning, thanks to a quick-thinking 14-year-old.

>> it's pretty intense. like, once i heard that thud on the door, my heart was just racing. >> that is andrew mason. he was inside the home with his two younger siblings when these men pushed in the glass panel of the front door, broke right in, and they went in and started stealing things. andrew's dad told him what to do if something like this happened. so, he went upstairs and secured his siblings. >> this is the closet we hid in. he taught me what to do. i had a rifle, a cell phone, called 911. i was just prepared for it. >> at one point, one of the men found andrew upstairs. he took one look at the rifle in the teen's hand and both of them took off running. how about that? police are still looking for them, though. always have a plan, that's the lesson there. noo-n phoenix, arizona, it took nine hours but the humane society was able to rescue a puppy from a drain pipe. police discovered that 2-week-old pup while serving a search warrant at the home. they called the humane society

who got the pup out safely. officials say they found two other puppies who didn't make it is and an adult dog. they believe the dog had a litter of puppies outside near a drainage ditch and this puppy fell in. these animals did not accidentally fall in. no, no, they planned this pool party crashing. everyone's going nuts over there today. a bear family cooling off in the backyard of a home in north jersey. a family in morris county took this video of the bears. the family was safely inside their den recording this, by the way. look at that. six, all having a good time. they played for almost an hour before sauntering back off into the woods. listen to this, though, the children were watching all this. they were not too happy about the bears using their pool toys. one of the girls was complaining about the bear chewing on her float. hope the float was okay. as the dog days of summer

are winding down, a dip in the pool sounds like a great idea. the bears agree. but what about your other pets? well, allentown's tenth annual doggy dip may be the answer. this weekend mack pool is going to the dogs. it closes to the public today and doggy dip opens saturday and sunday from 12:00 to 4:00. doi dogs can enjoy a pool at the jordan pool on september 8th and 9th. ♪ and we now know how many people packed the beach in atlantic city for yesterday's big rascal flatts concert. more than 30,000 fans heard the group sing their hits like "stand" and "bless the broken road," less than those who turned out for maroon 5. atlantic city is happy with both turnout. that means money for the city. convenient or crossing the line? we'll tell you about a plan to reduce wait time at one of the

phone to calculate accurate wait times. those are displayed on screens for passengers to look up and see. no word on if or when it could come to philadelphia international airport. there's still a few more weeks of sandal weather ahead of us. let's not put them away yet. there's a recall you need to know about. more than 50,000 pairs of women's sajtsdzs are being recalled because of a fall hazard. those are made well sandals from the spring 2015 company. the company received eight reports of metal dislodging and breaking through the bottom of the shoe. i saw some women in the studios checking their feet right now. physicist steven hawking has lived with als for decades. now the technology that has given him an artificial voice could help others with disabilities. nbc's mark barger shows us the program anyone can download for free. >> reporter: it's called acat.

that's going to make for a really nice weekend both on saturday and sunday. but a live look outside right now just a few clouds. 82 degrees. our humid is down. down to 51%. wind speed out of the north-northeast at 14 miles an hour, gusting up to about 21 miles an hour. it's a gusty day but more comfortable than what we saw yesterday and we'll stay dry versus the heavy downpours yesterday. closer look at our current temperatures. 79 in trenton. 80 in glassboro. 80 degrees in wilmington. temperatures at atlantic city airport at 80 degrees as well. we'll continue to see temperatures staying a little above average but they'll start to drop down a little bit saturday and sunday. radar/satellite shows a few clouds here. all the showers and heavy downpours are well offshore now. we don't have to worry about that at all. we are going to see dryer air once again coming in from the north and northwest. that's going to make it feel more comfortable as we head into the rest of the day. definitely as we push into

tomorrow. so, this is going to be a fantastic way to start the weekend. the other thing we're watching is hurricane danny. yesterday was a category 1. now it's strengthened to a category 2 meaning it's packing wind speeds up to 105 miles an hour. it's moving slowly to the north-northwest at 10 miles an hour. it's 930 miles east of the leeward islands. this will continue to track to the west as we head into the weekend but it won't be until monday that we start to see this weaken and head onshore to some islands there. by monday at 8:00 a.m., you'll notice this is going to weaken down to sustain wind spoodz around 65 miles an hour. it won't even be a hurricane anymore. it will continue to run into dryer air and push onshore and it will continue to weaken until tuesday, even wednesday. then we'll just be dealing with a tropical depression, remnants by then. as we show you our futurecast if you plan to head down the shore today, expect temperatures to push into the 80s from ocean city even down to wildwood and

avalon, all in the low 80s today. you'll notice we stay dry, just a few passing clouds overnight tonight. we'll see a lot more sunshine even as we head into saturday. again, our temperatures are going to warm back into the low 80s. it's going to be a beautiful day -- a beautiful weekend ahead down the shore. our highs around the region today, it will be sunny and dryer. 88 degrees will be the high in philadelphia. 84 in pottstown. close to 80 degrees for the poconos. if you plan on heading out to the game tomorrow, 7:00 p.m. kickoff time, we'll see nice conditions. temperatures at 79 degrees. your seven-day forecast shows our temperatures stay nice and warm as we head into saturday and sunday. then we warm back up to 90 on monday. we stay dry into next week. stay with us.
