let's take a look right now where they are ranging. close to the final bell. the dow, down 520 points. to this now, smoke billowing as firefighters and delaware department of natural resources fought a refinery fire in delaware city this afternoon. skyforce 10 over the scene. no one was hurt. a car smashed deep into the side of a window treatment business. police believe it happened because the elderly driver suffered a medical emergency behind the wheel. skyforce 10 over the accident on route 611 in warrington. witnesses tell us they saw the man slump down before accelerating into the building. the driver was taken to the hospital. twin brothers were found shot to death in a car in camden. this afternoon, the search is on for their killer. the bodies of 26-year-old maurice and markice harper were discovered inside a car near the

intersection of collings and constitution road. investigators believe the brothers had been shot several hours earlier. one neighbor we spoke to says the twins were well-liked. >> every time you turn around it's somebody that knows somebody and it's like the whole camden city scene like when somethingzji king to determine a motive for the shooting. 48 weekends in jail. that's the sentence for a former baltimore ravens cheerleader. molly shattuck pleaded guilty to raping a 15-year-old boy. one of the crimes happened over labor day weekend last year on a vacation home in bethany beach, delaware. as part of her two-year probation, shattuck must register as a sex offender. she became the oldest nfl

degrees on wednesday, 90 degrees yesterday. so far, only 88 only 88 degrees at philly international. now we are down to 87. the humidity is way down as well, in the low to mid 80s across much of the area. 88 in atlantic city. there's that band of heavy rain that moved through and it is long gone or at least far enough gone that we don't have to worry about it for tonight or tomorrow. for tonight, it is just going to be delightful. the humidity going down is going to allow the temperature to go down. so it will be real comfortable by 8:00 10:00 tonight. temperatures in the 70s going down into the 60s later on 50s in some suburbs. we will see if it will stay this way through the weekend and i will have the latest on major hurricane danny now coming up in the seven-day. amtrak is getting ready for an influx in riders during pope francis' visit to the states by adding more service. the extra trains will operate with added seats and will ride

between new york, philadelphia and washington. pope francis will visit all three cities at the end of september. it's important to note here too, you must have a reservation to ride. septa is selling papal visit commuter train passes starting today. these are for one-day regional rail passes during the weekend the pope is in philadelphia. about 20,000 tickets were left over from the online lottery. even though the system initially crashed, because so many customers logged on. tickets cost $10 each. you can buy up to ten tickets per day. even though more than a million visitors are expected patco says it still has plenty speedline tickets left for the papal weekend, too. >> today we are learning hotels still have vacancies. nbc 10's jesse gary is live outside the lowe's hotel in center city. what's behind the switch from hotels to saying they're full to all of a sudden, there are vacancies? >> reporter: representatives with hotels such as the one behind me say the frenzy

surrounding the pope's visit next month has created a vacuum. a lot of people pulling back choosing to stay away instead of checking in and staying the weekend. >> it was a misconception. i think people believed that the hotel rooms were all sold out. >> reporter: the p.r. director jamie gordon says nothing is further from the truth. about one-fifth of the 581 room property is vacant for the pope's visit although available spots are selling quickly. the perception of shortage has started to wither once plans to shut down a large section of center city went public. many hotels fall within the box. a transit black hole the weekend of the 26th and 27th may make septa the best bet. >> we travel underneath the traffic box and come right up and pop people up right where they need to get to. >> reporter: many people including would-be hotel guests started changing plans due to the amount of walking needed once the ride to center city ended. the result has been hotels some of which held back rooms, now

transportation, road closures and the places you can go to try to see the pope in person. the nbc 10 news app is a free download. we have new information about the decision not to charge two bridgeton, new jersey police officers for shooting and killing a man during the traffic stop. the man's family says the prosecutor's news release on the decision is troubling and omits details from the record. a grand jury panel believed the officers knew 36-year-old jerome reed was once fired -- that jerome reed once fired on law enforcement and police say they found a gun in the glove box in the car. an attorney for reed's family said the prosecutor failed to say the officers had a record of using force. the first assistant prosecutor declined to comment. the police chief in st. louis says an 18-year-old who was shot and killed by an officer died from a single wound to the back. the incident sparked protests earlier this week. the chief told the local

newspaper the autopsy results neither confirm nor disprove officers' accounts that mansur ball-bey pointed a gun at them. that's something the teen's family disputes. the chief said quote, just because he was shot in the back doesn't mean he was running away, end quote. two 13-year-old wisconsin girls have pleaded not guilty to attempted homicide. they are accused of luring their friend into some woods last year to stab her as a sacrifice to the fictitious slenderman. the victim survived 19 stab wounds. the suspects were 12 at the time and are being charged as adults. they face decades in prison if convicted. three advocacy groups are suing new jersey governor and republican presidential candidate chris christie. they say christie violated his financial responsibilities to the state by forcing taxpayers to cover the cost of his security detail accommodation and other expenses while campaigning. they want him to reimburse the

money. christie has argued his campaign should not pay the cost because his state police protection is mandatory regardless of what he's doing. his competitors differ in their approaches. wisconsin governor scott walker's campaign reimburses his state. meanwhile, a move is under way to get communityedian jon stewart on to the presidential debate stage. more than 150,000 people have signed a petition for him to moderate a debate pointing to his experience interviewing heads of state, cabinet members and members of congress. he has won a peabody award for his coverage of the 2000 and 2004 presidential election. neither stewart nor the debate commission have commented. the first lawsuit has been filed in the wake of the ashley madison website scandal. two canadian law firms have filed a $578 million class action lawsuit against the companies that run the website. in the u.s. hundreds of federal workers with sensitive jobs may

be in hot water for using work computers to access and pay membership fees to the cheating website. two assistant u.s. attorneys, a justice department investigator and homeland security employee are among those who allegedly use that website. earlier this week hackers released detailed records on millions of people registered with the website. an investigation is under way to see if state employees used work computers to do the very same thing. philadelphia is conducting its own investigation. state policy forbids the use of state computers or e-mails to access sexual or obscene material. violations could result in potential firing. threats of war from north korea today have put the u.s. forced them to stop military exercises. u.s. defenses put a hold on exercises with south korea. american military officials monitor the situation between the north and south. north korean leader kim jong-un ordered his troops to prepare for battle against south korea

as the two countries exchanged artillery fire near the border. the countries are fighting over propaganda broadcasts at the dmz. meantime some south korean residents who live near the militarized zone have evacuated the area. about 60 people are in shelters as north korea fires shells into the south. right now, there are no reports of casualties. the two countries have been at odds since the korean war ended in a truce instead of a peace treaty back in 1953. get out immediately. that's the urgent message many people are hearing today in washington state as wildfires continue to spread. nbc 10 national correspondent leanne gregg is live in washington. >> reporter: crews once again today are facing extreme fire conditions. those wind gusts of up to 30 to 40 miles an hour are pushing flames toward more communities.

firefighters in washington state fighting an uphill battle to get a handle on wildfires that have scorched nearly 400,000 acres. overnight, high winds caused the fires to grow and shift direction, forcing new evacuations. >> there's a very real possibility that those current evacuations could need to be expanded today based on what the fire is wanting to do. >> reporter: the problem, heat coupled with extremely dry conditions brought on by years of drought. even veteran firefighters say this is an extraordinary season. >> i have never seen this much fire that's this big in washington state before. it's just hard to get a grasp on it. >> reporter: high winds are fueling the flames and also hindering the response. >> it makes it very very difficult, if not impossible to utilize aviation resources on a day like this. it's just a very challenging

day. >> reporter: one bit of good news, the 14-day outlook calls for cooler wetter conditions. but with 100 wildfires burning in the west resources are thin. firefighters working 16-hour days in rugged terrain and heat. now the department of natural resources is recruiting civilian volunteers while experienced firefighters are coming from australia and new zealand. a relentless wildfire season with no signs of letting up. even though the wind the strong winds are expected to leave this weekend, other atmospheric conditions are expected to develop that will create several days more of these dangerous fire conditions. jacqueline? >> thank you very much. huggies, they are responding via facebook to parents who say they found glass in their baby wipes. >> that's shining, all glass.

i can't even believe this right now. >> in this viral video, melissa opens a new package of huggies wipes and shows what could appear to be shimmering shards in the wipes. other angry parents took to social media as well posting their own videos photos and stories of alleged glass-tainted wipes. the company defended itself today, saying in a facebook post, quote, all of our huggies products have been thoroughly evaluated to be sure they are safe. in addition, we have stringent quality controls in place and no glass is used during the manufacture of our wipe. huggies officials say they are working with the family involved to learn more about what happened. an airbag concern has federal safety officials taking a good look at 2008 honda accords. the agency says it's received complaints that the computer control failed in one case stopping the bag from inflating. there's no recall yet but if you get an airbag warning light on the dash it could mean they're

not working. nearly 4,000 workers at 45 a & p face layoffs on thanksgiving day. acme markets are buying many of the stores. here's a closer look at the numbers. there will be 164 s layoffs in orley beach. point pleasant will lay off 14 workers. 80 workers at the a & p in brick township will leave. at the pathmark there will be 101 layoffs. american airlines is cutting daily direct flights between philadelphia and tel aviv. the reason it's not making any money. the route has actually lost more than $20 million this year alone. service will end january 5th. passengers can use british air ways but expect a layover in london. we now know how many people packed the beach in atlantic city for yesterday's rascal flatts concert.

seagulls are part of the new jersey shore scenery but are notorious for being scavengers capable of snatching a funnel cake right out of your hand. clearly they have good taste. now the birds are stepping up their game along some popular boardwalks and are not just staying outdoors anymore. >> wait until you see this. nbc 10 jersey shore bureau reporter ted greenberg shows us how businesses are fighting back. >> reporter: panic in a boardwalk pizza parlor caused by a seagull. >> they're not afraid anymore. >> reporter: a customer's cell phone camera captured others running for the exit after a seagull flew inside ocean city's manco & manco pizza restaurant.

lots of folks can share stories about being dive-bombed outside by seagulls in search of food. >> i was sitting on the beach and a seagull swooped down and grabbed my sandwich out of my hand. >> reporter: on several occasions this summer the hungry birds have invaded boardwalk businesses even this jewelry shop. >> we have had this store 40 years. this is the first time a seagull has ever come into our business. they are much more aggressive this year. >> they have become so used to all the people here. >> reporter: a push is under way to keep the gulls outside. as a test chickie's and pete's put sonic bird repellers on its two boardwalk locations about a month ago and they seem to be working. >> so far, we went from having almost a daily problem to zero problems. >> reporter: the seagulls apparently lured by the chain's crab flies flew into the mall next door. >> the birds hear the distress call and simply fly the other

>> lot of people off on this friday. let's talk to nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. how about this weekend? >> well up in the poconos it's looking nearly perfect. at the shore it will be really nice. not quite as nice sunday as saturday. but pretty nice right now in cape may where they were getting some really heavy rain overnight and into the early morning hours. that has moved offshore. it's not going to stay that far offshore. we have to monitor it all weekend, see if any of that moisture comes back. right now it is in the 80s. 87 in philadelphia 83 in allentown, 74 in mt. pocono. now that the humidity is gone the temperature can drop at night and you don't have to be sweltering all night. 86 by 6:00 but then it drops into the 70s in philadelphia 60s in some of the suburbs even by 10:00 tonight. we will see how long the great

weather will last and have the latest on category 3 major hurricane danny in 'a few minutes. thank you very much. a man was shot to death as he sat in his car in mayfair this morning. investigators tell us the victim was parked on longshore avenue when someone walked up and fired at least 12 shots. the victim made it out of his car but died on the sidewalk. police say the man had just moved into the neighborhood. a man with a gun leapt over the counter of a domino's pizza and demanded money in the 4200 block of north broad. the robber got away with cash from the register and safe. police tell us he is 5'7" with a thin build. a quick-thinking 14-year-old saved his siblings when robbers break into the house. >> for someone to come and violate our family our household, it really, really is

upsetting. >> reporter: he wasn't home neither was his wife. his three children were home alone when these two started poking around outside. their intentions as clear as the video. the decorative glass on the front door a weak point. >> they were able to push the glass in and put their hand in unlock the door and that was it. they had access. >> reporter: what the criminals didn't know was 14-year-old andrew mason was inside with his two younger siblings. he had trained his kids on what to do in this scenario. step one, don't answer the door. >> once i heard the thud on the door my heart was racing. >> reporter: he runs upstairs and secures his siblings. >> this is the closet we hid in. i have a rifle and cell phone and called 9 lech 911. >> reporter: one of the robbers returns upstairs and finds andrew. >> he sees me with the rifle in my hand and takes off running. >> reporter: the pair runs out and speeds off.

skyforce 10 live over breaking news in montgomery county. shoppers are evacuating the willow grove mall because someone found a letter that said there was an explosive in the mall. police have evacuated the macy's and have now brought in k-9s to help check the store. so far they haven't found anything. this time tomorrow fans will be tailgating ahead of eagles preseason game number two. the birds take on the baltimore ravens right here at lincoln financial field. this is a game you will only see on nbc 10. what you're looking at now is a live look at the field from our new eagles nest camera.

here, seven or eight in a row. danny, now a major hurricane, category 3. more on that in a minute. bright sunshine out there. the rain clearing out everything. 87 degrees, feels like 87 as the humidity gradually goes down. now, we've had our heat wave. it has gone through thursday barely getting to 90 degrees. today we may fall just short, the official number will come in in less than an hour. you can see the temperatures are generally in the 80s. the wind is out of the northwest, bringing in that drier air. lets it be cooler at night. 86 in wilmington. they were mid 70s this time yesterday with the rain. trenton was cool with the rain as well. at the shore, 82 in beach haven, 79 in lewes, delaware with the wind off delaware bay. that was the solid band of showers and heavy storms that moved through overnight, hit the

shore pretty hard at least in some parts of the area. we've got something we're watching offshore a little circulation. there's showers out there. as we go through saturday into sunday we will have to take a look at this and some of this moisture could start coming back. you see the trend here as we go into sunday morning. most of the models keep the moisture close to the coast or just offshore but if there's going to be any showers this weekend, it's most likely in ocean county and down toward parts of the jersey shore. the farther inland you go the lesser the chance of any kind of rain or clouds. at the shore, mostly sunny on saturday, mix of sun and clouds sunday. water temperature is down to 67 degrees. in the poconos, spectacular weather on saturday and mostly sunny on sunday. could be some clouds again that come in from the ocean but probably wouldn't rain in the poconos. for the eagles saturday night,

right now at 5:00 local firefighters are putting their lives on the line to help stop these wildfires out west. nearly 100 fires are burning in a number of western states. now more than two dozen firefighters in new jersey are joining the fight. more than 2,000 miles from home they spoke exclusively with nbc 10 about the dangerous conditions they are dealing with every day. >> here's the latest on the wildfires. president obama declared a state of emergency in washington state. that gives the federal government the authority to coordinate disaster relief

efforts. in the last few hours, high winds caused the fires to grow and shift directions forcing new evacuations. the fires aren't expected to stop burning any time soon. >> so firefighters from mays landing and other locations around new jersey are now part of the team fighting fires. they are on the lines in montana and washington state. nbc 10 jersey shore bureau reporter ted greenberg talked with them about the risks and wednesday's tragic losses. >> reporter: they have taken lives and forced people to flee their homes, massive wildfires raging out west. crews from the garden state are there fighting the flames. >> we are working very steep terrain. >> reporter: larry birch is almost 20 members of the new jersey forest fire service currently in montana. since tuesday they have endured long dangerous days helping to battle a growing 400 acre wildfire near seeley lake. they expect to stay there for another week and a half. >> right now,
