press." nbc 10 news starts now. the school year begins with concerns at a local college. more legionnaires bacteria turned up at westchester university. now officials have important information as students return to campus today. right now we're tracking breaking news overseas where stocks tumbled in early trading. ahead, what that could mean for investors here following friday's free fall on wall street. plus, advice about what you should and should not do today. stocks may be tuxiblie tum. we're looking somewhere near 90 on the thermometer today. also a chance of thunderstorms but not everyone will see them.

welcome to nbc 10 news today on this monday, i'm chris cato. we begin with meteorologist bill henley and his first alert forecast. it feels pleasant out there. >> gorgeous, really nice. clear skies, completely clear this morning and cool as a result with calm conditions and low humidity. the temperatures dropped into the 50s for allentown, wilmington at 65, 65 in northeast philadelphia. beautiful start to the day but there will be clouds building during the day and it is going to be a warm afternoon. 68 degrees at 6:00. by 9:00 we'll be in the middle 70s. the wind is calm and it starts to pick up at lunch time. 84 degrees and clooming. later in the afternoon, you might need an umbrella. hour by hour futurecast when i'm back in ten minutes to show you when the storms are most likely to roll through. let's take a look at the roads with jessica boyington. we're looking live at the vine street expressway where things are moving along, westbound right in here is where we're seeing the three-minute

drive time. average speeds 49 miles per hour. you can see eastbound side moving along great as well. if you're headed toward 95 or the schuylkill or the 30th street station, uhl do just fine for the morning. center city on 95, from woodhaven road up toward the vine street expressway, a 13-minute trip. the schuylkill eastboundç is doing okay with a 12-minute trip. we are losing two right-hand lanes with ongoing construction. not affecting too much because there's not a lot of traffic heading through. from the schuylkill to 95, a 16-minute trip there. no problems or delays for septa, new jersey transit and the patco speed line. chris. 4:02 now. a late-night house fire gutted a home in mantua township, gloucester county. it appears to have started on the second floor. good news here is there were no injuries. the cause is under investigation. now to a developing story, the start of a new school year

at westchester university brings health concerns for students and staff today. here's why. a legionnaires scare has forced official to shut off water to several buildings there. matt delucia is live at westchester university this morning where that campus will soon be crawling with students starting a new semester. this is probably the last thing the school wants to happen at this time of the year. >> reporter: indeed, chris. there are ten buildings on campus that tested positive for legi legionella. it began treating the unit this weekend. that meant turning off the water system and super chlorinating it to kill the bacteria. westchester university says it's been told by the lab that ran these tests that the levels were not high enough for immediate concern. this happened before at other

high profile build innings our area, philadelphia, you might recall back in the '70s, a big case there, a deadly case. the last update provided by the university was friday. the fall semester does begin today. students are on campus now, the chester county health department told the school there was no need to curtail activities. 4:30 we're finding out why these buildings underwent testing in the first place. live in westchester, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. here's what else we're watching today. pennsylvania's attorney general, kathleen kane will be back in court in montgomery county. she's charged with leaking grand jury information to a reporter and then lying about it. katy zachry is live for us in norris f norristown. >> reporter: today's preliminary hearing is scheduled to are this afternoon. that's where prosecutors lay out the case against the defendant in hopes of showing probable cause so the case will go to

trial. despite numerous calls, including governor tom wolf, attorney general kathleen kane refused to step down, saying she did nothing wrong. the criminal complaint charges her with leaking grnd jury information to the press. prosecutors said she did that in an attempt to embarrass two former staffers. attorney general kane says her rivals manufactured those charges to get her out of office and make sure that e-mails that she uncovered during her review of the jerry sandusky child sex abuse case, to make sure e-mails related to that were not released. coming up, you'll hear from the attorney general about these charges and we'll look more closely into those e-mails and talk about what they contain. reporting live in norristown, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. 4:05 now. breaking news from overnight, stocks fell in trading on the asian markets today following

last week's plunge on wall street. tokyo stocks tanked overnight. the nikkei index dipped to its lowest point in two years. exchanges in shanghai, hong kong and south korea also tumbled. that has american investors bracing or another wild ride after friday's free fall on wall street. the dow jones dropped 531 points, u.s. stocks posted their worst week in four years. nbc 10 spoke last night with financial adviser robert wilson about what all of this means for your money. >> look, the market went down over 500 points. that's about 3%. this is nothing like, let's say, aç blackmon in 1987 which was 22% drop. everyone should take a breath, realize it's not the end of the world but think about calling your adviser, just to say, take a gut check, what's our next plan here?

the only thing that can protect you is your discipline. >> and to help you with that discipline, nbc 10 will continue to watch the overseas markets and we'll be watching wall street from the opening bell this morning to the close at 4:00 this afternoon. you can track any breaking developments on the nbc 10 news app, a free download at nbc10.com. the death of an off-duty philadelphia police officer has revived concerns over a dangerous stretch of road in roxborough. rafael ali, a ten-year veteran of the force died late saturday night when his pickup truck slammed into a tree on henry avenue. according to investigators, ali was speeding when he missed the curve. residents in this area often say drivers go too fast on this stretch of road which is notorious for its tight turns. >> being a wide, multiple lane road, people think they can go faster. >> it's not a curve you want to take at 60 miles an hour. >> it's like a racetrack.

>> investigators believe that ali may have been asleep when he crashed because there were no tire marks on the road, indicating he never hit the brake. he leaves behind two children, including a daughter who just turned 10 yesterday. 4:08. one month from today, september 24th, pope francis will be in washington, d.c. two days ahead of his arrival for the world meeting of families. the papal playbook will be released today. it's a go-to guide for residents and businesses not only in philadelphia but also in surrounding counties in all three states. most people we spoke with want to know more about the road closures while pope francis is in town. >> traffic and people traveling. how to get from one place to ç another. >> how we're going to get there, it's called patience. >> the papal playbook launches at noon. we'll have a link to it on the

avenue, totally dry this morning. we'll see showers develop late in the day. might not reach the shore. look at that, everyone is reporting calm conditions with the dry air that's already in place that's allowed the temperatures to come down. there are clouds on the way. you can see them moving through pennsylvania right now. with those clouds come a chance of showers and thunderstorms later in the day. it should stay dry through the morning hours. hour by hour forecast shows quiet at 11:00. with sunshine, we'll see a quick warmup, in the 80s by 11:00 and near 90 degrees this afternoon. a little bit more humid during the afternoon hours. pretty quiet at 2:00, might see an isolated, light shower. this is the line we'll be watching to the west. it will be moving into the reading and allentown area, by 5:00, scattered showers are possible and it cowl be sweeping through philadelphia during the evening hours. during the day, likely stay dry. if you see late-day showers in the pocono mound taz, 87 for allentown and reading, up to 88 degrees in trenton and

on the boulevard, right around roberts avenue. they are on the northbound side. taking out a lane in part of that shoulder, you can see the cones in the area as well, one lane getting by. not a lot of traffic behind the scene. the pa turnpike, everything is moving along within t longalong. 22 minutes from route 1 up towards valley forge. we're also watching an accident see on the blue route on the southbound side between broomall and st. davids. 4:12 now. it's a vacation they will never forget for a moment they never could have expected. an entire country is now saying thanks to three young americans. next, how french officials are honoring the men who jumped into action and stopped a begunman from taking lives. and don't adjust your television. this is a giant multicolored mushroom and it's missing.

4 a 15 now on your monday. dozens of wildfires have burned more than a million acres in the pacific northwest. in spite of a massive week-long effort to stop these fires, firefighters are having a tough time getting the upper hand. air tankers, smoke jumpers and 30,000 crew members have been deployed. it's taking a toll on those on the front line. >> you don't understand what we give to you when we come in there. >> in washington, three firefighters died last week

trying to escape the flames. the governor has called in the national guard and the president has declared a disaster. 4:16 now. today, france gave its highest award to three americans who sprang into action to stop a gunman on a french train. and that is the video there from just within the past hour. french president francois hollande met the heroes in paris and presented legion of honor medals to eep of them. those americans, including two service members and a college student were childhood friends on vacation, heading from amsterdam to paris when they saw a man with an assault rifle. the rifle appeared to be jammed. they jumped on him as he pulled out more weapons from a bag. they choked the gunman unconscious and tied him up. >> he hit me on the shoulder, said let's go. ran down, tackled him, hit the ground. alex came up and grabbed the gun

out of his hand while i put him in a choke hold. >> it was gut instinct. >> i saw spencer and alex get up. those are my close friends. i couldn't let them go alone. >> authorities identified the gunman as ayoub el khazzani, a 26-year-old from morocco. a french prosecutors tells nbc 10 news they are investigating whether el khazzani is part of a bigger network. president jimmy carter taught sundae school in plains, georgia. yesterday was the 689th time carter taught sundae school. 689 times. how about that? the 90-year-old has been teaching since he was 18 before becoming a peanut farmer and eventually becoming the 39th president of the united states. his message to the hundreds of people at church yesterday was very clear, peace, faith and love. >> so if you have a setback,

accept it and set higher goals than you ever had before. >> president carter says he plans to continue teaching for as long as he can. it was less than a week ago that he held a news conference in atlanta to explain that the cancer in his brain and his newly found treatment. 4:18 now. an indy car driver is in a coma at a hospital in allentown after a crash yesterday during a race at pocono international speedway. 37-year-old justin wilson was hit in the head by a large piece of debris from another car during a crash in the final laps of that race. his car then slammed into a wall. wilson was air lifted from the raceway and is suffering a serious head injury. >> indy cars are inherently pretty dangerous with the open cockpit like that. it's one of the most dangerous forms of motorsports. we know we go out there every day with that risk. he was hit in the head. that's a big piece of body work to hit somebody in the head. justin wilson is still in a

coma in critical condition. his wife flew from their home in colorado to be by his side. look at this one here. the owner of sinclair sunrise cafe in chester conte is trying to track down a stolen mushroom. this is nothing he needed for a recipe. this is a 108-pound concrete statue taken from outside his shop in kinnette square thursday night. the owner was going to enter it into a sideline the auction at the mushroom festival next month with plans to donate the money to local nonprofits. if you see this around someone's living room, give police a carr call. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill >> 19 minutes after 4:00. the temperatures are falling right now. we have clear skies, not a single cloud out there. not much wind either. the wind is quiet, the temperature 69 degrees. that's at philadelphia international and that's the warm spot. much of the rest of the area seeing lower 60s.

south philadelphia, citizens bank park will see activity this evening. the mets will be in town and the weather may be a bit iffy around game time. there will be clouds and a chance of some scattered showers. not going to be a washout by any means. there might be a few rain drops, possibly even a few lightning bolts around the beginning of the game by later in the game, there will be clouds. 78 degrees and a southerly o own -- wind at 8 miles an hour. look at the cooler temperatures, 58 in wester springs, 59 in doylestown and blue bell and in delaware, it's in the low 60s, newark, 59 in millville. beach haven 73. nothing to show you on the radar at the shore or inland this morning. this afternoon there's a possibility of scattered showers and thunderstorms. the clouds will be clear to begin with. they will be moving in, just some scattered high clouds at
