>> reporter: not good, keith. certainly with those numbers you just said, they are not very good numbers. a lot of people really don't get what's happening here. basically, problems in china have led investors to sort of pull back the reins which means all our 401(k)s and retirements, a lot of them have taken a real hit. i asked experts today flat out, i said what do normal folks like me do right now. >> ill not going to do anything. >> reporter: that's one guy's plan to ride out the stock market craziness. others agreed this isn't some financial apocalypse. >> you're not sweating it out, buying canned goods and worrying about your retirement? >> no. not at all. >> reporter: many experts say it's really just a correction prompted by china's economic shakiness. but they say historically speaking it was due to happen. >> we did get a couple calls this morning but we try to remind our clients that short term noise does not equate to long term gains or losses. >> reporter: michael deals with a lot of clients whose financial futures are tied to the markets. what is he telling them and us? stay the course. >> it's human nature to be

scared and human nature to worry, but again, if you have an investment process that you have used stick with it. >> reporter: this means don't go selling everything off or making rash emotional decisions. the two biggest enemies of investing are fear and greed. either can get you in trouble. that being said, we folks who regularly put our paycheck into our retirement, this so-called black monday is a little like black friday. our contribution buys more shares right now. i asked a wilmington university professor to explain it in terms we joe six-packs can understand. >> if joe six-pack is an eagles fan like i am and used to buying your tickets for $105 and now they are $50 i would buy twice the number of tickets. all we have now is the opportunity to buy things on sale. >> reporter: a lot of companies in wilmington and around the world taking a hit in the last couple days. what if you are close to retirement? that's trickier. experts say retirement doesn't

attorney general kathleen kane's day in court. the state's top cop is accused of leaking secret grand jury information and lying about it under oath. today, her attorney spent several hours defending the charges against her and it just wrapped up a half hour ago. we heard from her attorney. nbc 10's deanna durante joins us live from norristown outside the montgomery county courthouse. >> reporter: kathleen kane's new york city-based attorneys were unsuccessful in getting any of the charges against her thrown out of court. they made repeated objections to the district justice inside the courtroom. they were upset about lack of paperwork, they wanted to call a prosecution witness as a defense witness. these were all things the judge did not allow. you are looking now as kathleen kane left the courthouse along with her sister and state agents who by her side. the attorney general said nothing to reporters, smiled briefly before she got into the elevator. this hearing lasted more than four hours and all of the charges from conspiracy to perjury are being held against

the attorney general. here is what her attorney had to say a little while ago. >> the entire story hasn't come out yet. i think a little more of the story evolved today. a little too slow for my taste. but we are looking forward to a trial. >> reporter: now, what is the whole story. we know from the attorney general's press conference that she held in harrisburg that she blames political foes saying that because she has e-mails on state servers that this is to blame as to why she has been charged with lying to a grand jury. i asked the assistant district attorney, the first assistant district attorney about that as the hearing ended. he said this is not a case about e-mail. this is a case about what kathleen kane has allegedly done. take a look at some video of her entering the courthouse a little while ago. this was as the attorney general arrived here. she and her twin sister walked into the courthouse. her sister walked in first wearing a blue jacket. that threw off some of the media. kathleen kane was right behind her in the red dress. some are speculating it was to

throw off cameras so they would follow the wrong sister into the courtroom. that is the very latest. much more of this for you coming up tonight at 11:00. deanna durante, nbc 10 news. we are tracking a few isolated showers developing on the radar just off to the west. let's talk to nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. when can we expect that rain? >> it will take a few hours to get into even some of the western suburbs. it will take all night to get toward the shore. a live view of cape may,ings this pretty quiet there. if there is going to be any rain tomorrow, it will be early in the day and at the shore. this is the line of clouds with a few showers and even some thunderstorms associated with it. as you can see, it's still well west of the area. just barely getting into berks county and some showers in lancaster county right now. the thunderstorm that was off to the west, that has even weakened and other heavier showers again near lancaster.

i will take even a couple hours to get into chester county, let alone anywhere in philadelphia or new jersey. by 7:00, there it is coming into chester county. then there's not a whole lot during the night tonight. we may see some regenerate later tonight and even into tomorrow morning as some of the moisture down south starts to come in. there could be some showers overnight during the night tonight. then what happens. let's see how dry it gets and for how long with the seven-day in a few minutes. new at 6:00, robbed and sexually assaulted along a pier in fishtown. a guy walked up to two women and a man along graffiti pier last night around 6:30, pulled out a gun and forced them into a wooded area on beach street, taking their phones and wallets. he sexually assaulted one of the women before he got away. the man who was with rosie o'donnell's daughter, by the way, when she was found appeared in court today via closed

circuit television. steven shearer of barnegat is charged with entaidangering the welfare of a child and distribution of obscenity to a minor. the charges center around 17-year-old chelsea o'donnell. she went missing for a week after disappearing from her mother's home in new york. shearer is in toms river jail tonight. the question is, is it a bluff. union workers in atlantic city plan another move tomorrow. it signals it will strike against the trump taj mahal. local 54 says it plans to load a storage trailer with strike supplies. the union will start training workers as strike captains to picket outside the casino. trump entertainment resorts says it has plans to remain open if there is a strike. the trump taj was the only one of the eight casinos that didn't have a profit in the second quarter. the casinos posted a combined 28% increase in gross operating profit. the borgata made the most while the golden nugget had the

largest year-to-year increase. switching gears now. fall classes began at west chester university today. after remedial work to kill a dangerous bacteria was finished. trace amounts of legionella bacteria were found in water systems inside ten campus buildings on friday. the hot water is back on after a process known as superchlorination. it was completed sunday. school higher-ups say they never had an outbreak or any risk to anyone on campus but that aggressive and voluntary tests were carried out after a university employee tested positive for the deadly disease last month. >> at this point, all the hot water is back on. no buildings were ever closed. there is no chance of legionella developing with the students or faculty and staff. >> no dormitories or students moving in were affected by the bacteria. known to cause deadly legionnaire's disease. it's a type of pneumonia. a rally outside the classroom in delaware county today.

look at this. skyforce 10 outside the courthouse in media. large groups of people there of chester upland charter school teachers who wanted their voices heard. at the same time, the pennsylvania department of education and the school fought over funding inside. governor tom wolf recommended cutting the amount of money per child by more than half because the district is already $20 million in debt. the parents are afraid the court battle will delay the start of the school year. the race for the white house was the likely lunch discussion inside the white house today. vice president joe biden and president obama had their weekly lunch together. the vice president had meetings about a possible run for the white house. the vp also hired a new communications director over the weekend. she ran john edwards' 2008 presidential campaign. the white house says the president isn't ruling out making an endorsement in the 2016 democratic primary. spokesman josh earnest says the

president has talked highly of former secretary of state hillary clinton and his choice for the vice president. >> seven years ago now, to add joe biden to the ticket as his running mate was the smartest decision he ever made in politics. i think that should give you some sense of the president's view of vice president biden's aptitude for the top job. >> hillary clinton is the front-runner right now for the democratic nomination. back here at home, a new leader is in charge of philadelphia's two daily newspapers. today, terrence egger was named the new publisher of the philadelphia inquirer, philadelphia daily news and philly.com. he takes over october 1st. he worked for the cleveland plain dealer and the st. louis post dispatch. when asked about layoffs, egger said quote, we may have to make adjustments and said, too, that next year, promised to be difficult financially. next on "nbc 10 news at

new at 6:00, a first look at what a new sea wall will look like that connects the a.c. boardwalk to margate and ventnor. it will reconnect south inlet with the north inlet for the first time since 1944, when a hurricane damaged it. it will be seven feet high. for the first time, it will be outside to protect the boardwalk. phase two starts in the fall. it is expected to be done at the end of 2017. the project costs $50 million. i'm looking forward to that one. well, got a shower up near the poconos but not much in the rest of the area. we are tracking those showers and seeing if they are going to amount to anything tonight. we have days of comfort starting tomorrow once these showers move by. there's a possibility of the next tropical storm developing in the atlantic pretty close to

where danny developed. this is citizens bank park. phillies are back home this week and pretty decent weather tonight. great weather for the rest of the week. that is for sure. great baseball weather. 87 degrees, winds out of the south. feels like 89. the high today was 89 degrees. 87 now, we are in the 80s across most the rest of the area. lancaster is down to 79 because the showers are in the area. it's cooled off at the shore as well, with a sea breeze that has come in during the afternoon. there it is, 80 degrees in sea isle city. 79, atlantic city marina. 81 in beach haven. the ocean is up to 78 degrees, about as warm as it's been all summer. you can see this line of clouds and some showers very clearly behind that line, the drier air is coming in. once it comes in, it will stay in for awhile. here come the clouds. the showers, not making a lot of progress and not really strengthening any. we have a couple coming in to

berks county, not quite to reading yet. but within the next hour, the other showers in lancaster will take another hour or two, even, to make it into chester county. to the west of that, we've got a couple thousand miles of dry air that's going to be moving in. so future cast hour by hour, you can see most of the activity, well, most of us not getting rained on during the night tonight. in new jersey or delaware, you are likely to get it well after midnight or maybe even first thing in the morning when you get up. toward the shore. but then it's drying from philadelphia north and west. the humidity is going down, it will be a beautiful afternoon and the start of something really nice. now, danny is back over my shoulder. this is the new development and we may be hearing more about this coming up as early as this evening. sheena will have the update on that at 11:00 tonight when it will probably be either a depression or already tropical storm erica. chance of showers through the

night tonight. most of us not getting wet. 70 degrees for the low. then during the day tomorrow, any early clouds or showers at the shore then becoming mostly sunny, less humid than today. relatively warm day, but you will notice that drop in humidity. then it will stay comfortable the rest of the week. actually getting more and more comfortable, little cooler at night each night. we don't really heat up until the weekend, but it looks dry all the way through that period. i'm john clark. sam bradford and chip kelly react to the nfl saying that suggs' hit on bradford saturday night was legal.

i'm john clark from comcast sports net. chip kelly and the nfl disagree on whether sam bradford should have been hit saturday night by terrell suggs in preseason action. it's something the nfl needs to clarify. >> you want to run the read option with your starting quarterback, that's on you. >> reporter: ravens linebacker terrell suggs went after sam bradford on this play because he thought it was a zone read play. today, the nfl's head of officiating, dean blandino, says quarterbacks can be hit on those plays. >> basically because the quarterback has an option, he's considered a runner until he either clearly doesn't have the football or he reestablishes himself as a passer. it's not a foul by rule. >> reporter: but chip kelly says today it was not a zone read play and has only called zone read plays in the preseason for tim tebow. >> we know the rules. if our quarterback hands the ball off and isn't going

anywhere, you shouldn't be able to hit him. the way the rule's been explained to us. if they want to get into that, they can get into that. then every other quarterback in the league when they get back in the shotgun can be hit. >> reporter: chip may not have called a zone read play there but it could look like that to defenses. here's sam bradford's reaction to that. >> i have no problem being hit. if you want to come hit me, hit me in the chest. i think when guys are diving directly at your knees, i think that's a little bit different. just because you're running a play out of the shotgun doesn't mean that it's a zone read. i think the league is probably just going to have to clarify exactly what a zone read is. >> reporter: this is an issue because ozone read plays, defenders can go after bradford's knees and one eagle said he would have probably done what terrell suggs did. >> if somebody's running a zone read i want to scare them out of it i'm going to hit the quarterback. >> reporter: interesting. eagles visiting the packers saturday night. see that game here on nbc 10 at 8:00. pregame coverage at 7:30.
