different nursing homes and all three of the dead were in their late 80s. we checked with state records that show that that funeral home had an expired license. neighbors on the street first knew something was wrong when they saw this garage door open. then they noticed the smell. and found decomposing remains in card board boxes and a casket. >> it was open, i was curious, smelled it and noticed it was bodies in there. >> reporter: police say the garage is used by a funeral home up the street. its owner spoke with investigators on scene. they say she was aware the bodies were in there, nbc 10 is not naming the owner because she is not charged with a crime. >> upstanding people. this is the funeral home for our community. >> reporter: we checked state records which show the owners license to be a funeral director is valid through next year, but the license the business needs to operate expired in 2012. police took photos of the conditions there where windows are missing and headstones are

buried under weeds and trash. >> i think they're remodelling it. >> reporter: we spoke with another director in the neighborhood. >> this is a devastation. you know, and i'm concerned more about the families that will find out what's going on. >> reporter: the licensing process and protocols are there for a reason. he says this case should be a wake-up call. >> you can go to any director you choose to, but make sure their license, make sure they have integrity, make sure that they care enough about you and your family that they will be honest. >> reporter: and we checked in with police again tonight, and we want to be clear that no one has charged as part of this case. but police add this investigation is not over. live at police central detective, drew smith, nbc 10 news. new at 11:00, two men shot in the what police are calling a love triangle. nbc 10 on east sedrick street tonight, that's where police say both men were shot just before 9:00. one victim is in critical condition, the other is stable. so far no arrests.

from neighborhood dad to white house fence jumper, and now courthouse attacker. tonight, friends are trying to figure out what happened to a man in chester county whose life ended in violence. investigators say a sheriff's deputy shot and killed curtis smith after he slashed a guard at the chester county courthouse this morning. smith was also in the headlines months before for breaching white house security. george spencer is digging into history tonight the incident does not match what the man's friends and neighbors thought they knew. >> reporter: that's right, tonight friends of smith said he describes that white house incident as a stupid mistake. after it he retained his reputation as the neighborhood dad and really nothing seemed badly off until he burst through these doors today. peering through the front window, camera captured the yellow-taped crime scene in the courthouse lobby. for curtis smith of coatesville, investigators believe it is his

second high profile crime scene since march, when he was arrested after jumping the white house fence. all of his neighbors say is a far cry from the life he lived here on this coastal cold sack full of families like this man. >> he was very friendly. he looked out for a lot of people around here. >> reporter: he was beloved in this neighborhood? >> yeah. >> reporter: but today investigators tell us smith busted into the lobby shouting around 11:00 a.m., and then pulled out a knife and attacked one of the deputies working security. a second deputy opened fire, striking him. >> this guy bust through the door. says i'm going to get you, i'm going to get you and keeps running. and pop, pop. >> reporter: for courthouse employees and witnesses, it was terrifying, but a successful containment from law enforcement's perspective. >> unfortunately, because of incidents like this across the nation, we have learned how to deal with an attack in a courthouse. >> reporter: long time friends tell us smith must have been

fighting demons they did not fully see after his father's death and the recent loss of his job. even the white house fence incident did not seem a major red flag to neighbors who described smith as outgoing, often mowing neighbor's lawns and organizing a kids barbecue two weeks ago. that injured sheriff's deputy was hospitalized with cuts. and tonight a friend who was with smith just hours before all of this happened, said there was no indication at all that any of it was coming. live tonight in chester county, i'm george spencer, nbc 10 news. turning now to our decision 2016 coverage. republican presidential front runner donald trump is making headlines tonight after throwing a univision anchor out of the press conference in iowa. >> excuse me, sit down, you weren't called. sit down. sit down. sit down.

go ahead. no, you don't. you haven't been called. go back to univision. >> that's jorge ramos trying to ask donald trump questions about his proposal to deport approximately 11 million undocumented immigrants from the united states. security eventually escorted ramos out of the room but he later returned with trump greeting him before they resumed their argument. >> they looked at the gangs in baltimore, looked at the gangs in schik, they looked ian in ferguson, they got some rough, illegal immigrants in those gangs. do you mind if i send them out? do you mind if i send them back to mexico? do you mind if i send them back to mexico? okay, those people are out. they're going to be out so fast your head will spin. >> during their five-minute exchange, trump reminded ramos that he is suing univision. the network dropped his miss universe pageant after he described undocumented immigrants as quotes criminals

and rapists. new jersey governor and republican presidential hopeful chris christie is blasting the iran nuclear deal. today he called on new jersey's congressional delegation to vote down the deal. christie appeared alongside jewish leaders and did not hold back in his criticism of the agreement while president obama supporters are set to rally across the nation in a no war with iran day of action. senior staff of u.s. embassy in japan, including ambassador caroline kennedy have used personal e-mail accounts for official business. that's according to to the state department's office of inspector general. it found that some of the e-mails don takened sensitive information. that comes at department reviews thousands of e-mails hillary clinton sent and received from a private e-mail account while secretary of state. tonight, futures are slightly down after another roller coaster day on wall

street. stocks had a big surge this morning, but collapsed at the end of the day. finishing with another negative close. the dow finished more than 200 points down. and markets around the world are running scared because china's economy is slowing. china cut into rates today for the fifth time since november, hoping for a boost, but still, the asian markets continue to slip. a great night to be outside to enjoy some spaghetti under the stars. nbc 10 in camden county there. four course meal along with live entertainment and it was all for a great cause. proceeds from the event benefitted the wounded warrior project. they were presented with a $5,000 check. let's bring in nbc 10 first alert meteorologist. it'll be a cooler night tonight. >> it will, jacqueline, we're talking about areas getting into the 50s, so perfect for that event. we county to cool down overnight tonight, and it's all because of this dry air mass in place.

we really don't have rain in the next several days, but that dry air, that's going to give us about temperatures ten degrees cooler through the overnight hours then we saw last night and early this morning. low temperatures as you wake up tomorrow morning, right around sunrise, we're looking at the mid-50s through parts of lee high valley, 56 for allentown, 63 for milville, 64 for dover. so this is something you'll notice when you wake up tomorrow morning. now, aside from that, we are still watching tropical storm erika, which is approaching the islands. we'll be watching this closely as we go into the weekend coming up i'll show you the latest track from the national hurricane center and we'll also talk about how much warmer it'll get through the weekend. that's straight ahead. new at 11:00, a warning from drexel university police about a string of home burglaries over the past few days. police tell us since saturday, someone broke into five homes in philadelphia's howellton village neighborhood near the campus.

investigators say the thieves took electronics, backpacks, and jewelry. police and security say they're stepping up patrols in the area. they urge everyone to keep their windows and doors locked. new information about a school budget bat until delaware county. tonight, a judge denied governor tom wolf's request to change charter school funding for the chester upland school district. the cash-strapped district is required to pay charter school's $40,000 per special education student while public schools get less than half that amount. >> we need them to open, we need to stay open and to do that we need a fair funding formula. >> governor wolf million recommended cutting the amount of funding per student by more than half. the district is $20 million in debt. the fate of a montgomery county elementary school now won't be decided until at least december. the school board met tonight to talk about the potential closing

of the elementary school in eagleville. the school's superintendent had recommended closing the school, which would leave the remaining four elementary schools to absorb more than 400 students. tonight, the board postponed any vote on the closure until december. pennsylvania's no closer to a budget tonight after the republican majority failed to convince democrats to override any part of governor tom wolf's budget veto. the house struck down all 14 proposals. democrats argue this procedure violated the state constitution, but republicans claimed, there was legal authority to restore spending by individual line item vetoes. the state has been without a budget since late june. a graduate found shot do at the time. the murder mystery and how police discovered the crime scene. from a welcoming pretty important guest, yes, it'll be inconvenient, i get that. >> philadelphia residents are whining too much over the pope's visit. and a warm, dry stretch

three homes went up in flames in camden tonight. nbc 10 was on the scene on south seventh and tulip street shortly before 10:00. firefighters were able to put out the flames but there was a lot of damage. the homes are abandoned. 29-year-old man is fighting for his life after police say he was shot in the head while driving his car. we were in east germantown as police searched for clues. the victim drove for about a block and crashed into the gold car you see right there, lifting it off the ground. here's a look at the scene from the ground. it all happened around 6:00. paramedics rushed the victim to einstein hospital where he is in critical condition. investigators believe they know who the shooter is and a man hunt is. under way. new at 11:00, an update on

breaking news we brought you last night. tonight we have learned a man found dead inside a car in new castle county had just become a lawyer. in fact, he graduated from temple university just months ago. as nbc 10's keith jones reports, his murder is a mystery. >> reporter: detectives focus on the crime scene behind me. it's a parking lot right there. it's where the body was found. it's closed a home too by the way which is right over there. detective searches the grass and weeds for evidence within eyesight of mourning family, friends, and loved ones. support came from sinclair avenue, cars streamed down the street, skirting the scene of the murder. sky force 10 watch police swarm the area after the body was discovered last night, inside a black audi by an alert employee. tonight police confirmed the 27-year-old was found shot to death inside. we spoke with family, friends, and paid a visit to the mosque he intends.

a facebook page, outpouring of support, comment after comment, praying for the muslim family, which they say is one of the biggest in delaware. spiritual leaders say the 27-year-old was a recent temple law graduate, but looking out at the scene, he's a victim of murder. police wouldn't tell us what they were looking for in the grass. i want you to take another good look at this car. did you see it last night? that's what police want to know. the funeral is scheduled in newark tomorrow, keith jones, nbc 10 news. a new pennsylvania bill aims to protect animals left in hot cars. state lawmakers introduced it today. the measure would ban the confinement of dogs or cats in unintended vehicles when it's dangerous for their health or safety. it would allow a police officer to remove the pet from the vehicle. and that officer would not be liable for any damages. violators would face a fine of up to $300. are we complaining too much

about the inconveniences caused by the pope's upcoming visit to philadelphia? that's what one seminarian claims in an article he posted on the arch diocese of philadelphia's facebook page. south philly native eric says the city has become the capitol of whining. he says the same people who say the phillies never got any respect even after winning the world series and who feel insuperior to new yorkers are the same ones whining about the long walks, traffic boxes, and big crowds they'll deal with during the pope's visit. >> part of that is just being able to man up in a sense and say this is a city, we want to be the next great american city, this is our opportunity to do that. so let's do it. >> you can read his entire letter, it is available on the nbc 10 news app. a local dog will get the surgery he needs thanks to a community fundraising effort. this evening, a check was presented to the man. the eight month old dog was born

with a lobster claw deformity in his front paw. the animal rescue in northern liberty has been holding fundraisers to get the money needed for surgery and they finally reached their goal. the surgery will allow him to walk without any pain. then, he'll be put up for adoption. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> well, we had a nice warm day for today, but the humidity was low, so made it feel a lot more comfortable outside. cooler temperatures though as we go through tonight. it's all that dry air in place. so finally now that the humidity as dropped, some areas will be in the 50s by tomorrow morning and in fact the humidity will stay low throughout the week and friday it does come back over the weekend. and we have tropical storm erika out in the atlantic, we are watching that closely. the updated track in just a second. right now the mid-60s for allentown, mid-70s philadelphia,

70 degrees atlantic city, but under completely clear skies. this is another factor that will allow the temperatures to drop overnight. areas north and west, you'll bottom out in the 50s by 8:00 tomorrow morning. sunny with temperatures in the low 60s for allentown, 62 degrees there, 67 for 8:00 temperature until philadelphia, 67 milville, mid-60s in dover, also through much of delaware. so whether you're going to be at the bus top or your kids or heading out for the morning commute, it'll billion nice start to your day for sure. radar is nice and dry, some storms offshore, those will be staying offshore. we have high pressure building in, and that is going to keep the humidity on the low side, and it's really keeping rain out of the forecast for the next several days. but there is more rain down in the tropical atlantic. first here are the remnants of danny over puerto rico, not expected to be an issue. further back off to the east sthoe, approaching the lesser antilles, this is tropical storm erika, barely holding on to the

strength. here's the updated track, it's going to continue moving west, now over the next few days, it's not expected to increase in intensity, still possibly tropical storm by friday, it's expected to encounter some unfavorable atmospheric conditions, then as it moves over the bahamas, or near the bahamas, it could increase to a hurricane at that time which will put it closer to the united states, obviously closer to florida, but that cone of uncertainty gets wider too so we will certainly be watching that. and over the weekend the models will have a better handle on this too. either way high pressure in the atlantic and over the eastern sea board, that should create a block, although we will certainly be tracking any changes as we go through the end of the week. tonight, clear and comfortable, temperatures mid-60s, philadelphia mid-50s, areas north and west, tomorrow, low 80s through the valley and sunny philadelphia area down to wilmington. mid-80s, closer to the shore. low 80s areas inland like dover, mid-80s. so then thursday and friday, take a look at those
