erika's strength and where it could be headed. >> sheena parveen joins us with the details. >> the strength has not changed much and we don't expect it to change much until it gets closer to the bbahamas. here you see the track has really shifted at least the current movement, i should say, shifted more to the west-northwest. earlier it was traveling straight west. now 15 miles an hour max winds, 45 miles an hour. it's still a weak tropical storm. we will continue to see this as we go over the next few days here. here is the updated track. really doesn't look too much different than the previous runs. as it gets closer to the bahamas by sunday afternoon, it could still be a tropical storm. not a lot of strengthening until the atmospheric conditions do not look favorable for further development until it gets to the bahamas. if it makes it to the bahamas and still has that circulation it could increase in intensity

as it moves near the florida east coast. we will watch this very closely. you see the cone gets wider the farther out we go in time because the uncertainty gets greater. so as we go through the next few days, models will get a better handle on this. as of now, a lot of computer models continue it towards the bahamas. at this point it is really a matter of whether or not this storm holds together. if it strengthens or if it stays weak as it crosses over maybe cuba. so a couple factors to keep in mind here. again, this is farther out in time so of course, as we go through the next few days we will have a much better idea of what the storm's going to do and of course, we will have more updates tonight as well. coming up, we take a look at the local forecast. we have hotter temperatures coming in for the weekend. we mentioned how erika has already hit the caribbean island of domenica. about 400 miles away, people in puerto rico are preparing for whatever the storm may bring. their loved ones are watching closely back here in the states. our team coverage continues with our sister station telemundo 62.

>> he joins us live from philadelphia international airport. has the storm had any impact on flights? >> reporter: i can tell you guys we talked to several folks who came in from puerto rico around 6:00 this morning and they tell us so far, even though the skies were clear when they left, this morning from san juan, they said they did hear about several rumors about possible flight cancellations throughout the day thanks to tropical storm erika. we did also talk to several local folks who have friends and relatives in the storm's path like rio grande and they say preparation is normal during hurricane season but communication is also vital. one woman who oversees the puerto rican center in north philadelphia emphasized that electricity and phone service is the first thing to fail when mother nature is at full force. >> different storms are different. as i said, this one is less of an issue and i will stay in touch with them but there have
5:03 pm
been other storms and the worst part is sometimes there may be no communication for 24 hours or something. and you will find out through the media what happened. so yeah, it's nervewracking. >> reporter: i can tell you i have been checking flight monitors here at philadelphia international airport and i can tell you so far there are no cancellations. of course, this can change throughout the next couple hours. information up to date that is also available on nbc10.com website. of course, the threat from erika comes as the gulf coast is remembering one of the worst hurricanes in its history. today, president obama visited new orleans to mark ten years since hurricane katrina. we'll have much more on that plus nbc 10's doug shimell spoke to a woman who left new orleans ten years ago and never went back. closer to home, a burlington

5:06 pm
former station employee, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. nbc 10 national correspondent dave wagner has been following this story. >> he joins us live from roanoke, virginia. what else did we hear at the news conference from wdbj? >> reporter: well, i think the one thing i took away from that news conference, really a couple of things, i guess i should say. number one, just the absolute sadness as they all walked out together wearing ribbons in honor of their two fellow employees who were killed yesterday morning. the other thing that stood out to me was the general manager talking about the performance record of vester flanagan, the gunman in this case here. he says that when he was fired, he was very angry and as he was escorted out the door from sheriff's deputies, he handed the news director a wooden cross and said to him, you'll need this. so that's a scary thought, considering what happened early yesterday morning. >> we also learned about new
5:07 pm
evidence that was found in the shooter's car. it sounds like he had a disguise. what have you learned about it? >> reporter: yeah. he had a to do list, he had a wig, a shawl, and he also had two glock hand guns. for those of you who are not gun enthusiasts, those are two of the most popularly sold hand guns in the world. the father of reporter alison parker, the 24-year-old reporter who was killed, says he's going to make it his mission to reduce the number of guns out there. he is very upset about this and said along with his grieving, he will make it known to the world just how important it is to do something about this after his daughter was killed. >> we know the memorial will only grow behind you. dave wagner live in roanoke, virginia, thank you for joining us. stay with nbc 10 for continuing coverage. do list. well, it's definitely hard to go to class, hard to go to work on a beautiful summer day like this, but it is back to school time at drexel university. plenty of people walking around campus today really enjoying the weather. so definitely a day where you want to get outside. this evening it will be nice and cool, same thing as we go into tomorrow. so nice again tomorrow morning. temperatures on the cool side, afternoon highs still about the mid to low 80s with low humidity. then we go into the weekend and that's when we start to see more changes. hotter temperatures, more humidity. so it will start to feel a lot more like summer, especially by sunday. and we have updates on tropical storm erika. still very far away but i will show you the track in just a second. some clouds have moved into the area so temperatures are right in the upper 70s, blocking a little bit of sunshine. but still very nice outside. humidity, still low, only around

5:21 pm
as we go into sunday, even more of that. more heat, more humidity. by the end of the weekend, definitely not feeling so much like fall. if you are heading to the shore this weekend, looking pretty good. for friday, temperatures around 80 degrees, low 80s to mid 80s across the weekend and we expect to see pretty dry conditions at the shore. now, here's a look at tropical storm erika. this is the most updated version of it. moving to the west-northwest at 15 miles an hour so the area that it's moving through, not favorable for development. we do expect it to stay as a tropical storm as it continues moving through the caribbean. but once it nears the bahamas, that's when it could encounter better atmospheric conditions. there's a chance by then it could be strengthening but at this point, there is still some uncertainty which direction it could take if it survives into the bahamas. we will be watching this very closely. that's why the cone gets wider the farther out in time and this actually goes through tuesday afternoon. again, this is all subject to change. we are still pretty far out from that. we'll have more updates of course later on tonight as well. for tonight, though, clear and
5:22 pm

5:28 pm
5:29 pm
5:30 pm
right now at 5:00, tropical storm erika is slowly making its way across the atlantic. the big question remains, what kind of impact could it have on the united states? >> a lot of factors play a role here. let's turn to nbc 10 first alert meteorologist sheena parveen. break down some of these scenarios for us. >> the thing here is some models strengthen the storm, some weaken the storm and it all depends on what conditions the storm will run into before it gets into more favorable conditions. so the first scenario here because it is right here puerto
5:31 pm
rico gives the storm the weakness. so the weaker side of the possible scenarios. now, it will be encountering hispaniola. haiti, the dominican republic, lot of mountainous areas here that cause friction that help weaken the storm and rip it apart. in the same area we have a lot of wind shear. these are upper level winds, higher in the atmosphere and they basically rip the top off the storm so it doesn't allow them to organize or strengthen either. so in this case, the storm will pass over rugged terrain and encounter unfavorable atmospheric conditions. that will cause it to stay weaker. now we look at the strengthening scenario of the storm. if it does not encounter as much wind shear or does not ruin the storm completely and it survives moving over here, the warmer waters will then help to fuel the storm. temperatures could be near 90 degrees. at that point we could start to see it strengthen near the bahamas where we have more favorable conditions. after that the computer models
5:32 pm
start to struggle with it a little bit. this is still going to be about tuesday of next week where you see the last icon here. so of course we have plenty of time to give you updates on that. the models still in disagreement as it gets closer to florida. we will have more updates even tonight on "nbc 10 news at 11:00" and more official updates or the latest for this evening and a closer look at the local forecast and the weekend forecast with hotter temperatures is coming up, too. the threat comes as the gulf coast remembers one of the worst hurricanes in its history. today president obama visited new orleans to mark ten years since hurricane katrina. many people from new orleans had to leave their homes and their city. some never went back. >> nbc 10's doug shimell spoke to a woman who has lived in philadelphia for the last ten years. doug, she went back to new orleans for the anniversary. what's that been like for her? >> reporter: well, she told me she thought it would be a lot easier but once jean got on to her old block, the ghosts all came back. >> i had a lot of sadness and

trauma to process. so i can't believe it took me this long. >> reporter: she had been back a couple of times since katrina. >> i first got here in october of 2005. it was another world. only thing out here were pigeons and flies and fema people. >> reporter: ten years after the storm that forced jean from mid-city new orleans to philadelphia, she is back there this week. >> when you get ripped out of something and you had never planned to leave, you have to work through it. >> reporter: as she sends us selfies in her old neighborhood, it hit her. >> now you're going to make me cry. i'm still processing a lot of it. i didn't realize how much i had from the whole situation. >> reporter: she says every time she heads for home it's a new reality. >> it's the point where i cannot afford to come back and live here. the rents are double and triple what they were.

the south stays to the south, and the humidity is very comfortable, too, into your friday. here's future weather. the wind direction is helping to bring in drier air. it continues as we go through friday afternoon, low humidity, comfortable temperatures, plenty of sunshine. by saturday, the wind direction shifts in from the south. that will bring up the heat and the humidity. that's what the south wind does. sunday, more of the same, so temperatures get hotter and the humidity stays up, too. it will feel a lot more like summer. here's a look at the tropics. this is tropical storm erika. there is puerto rico. it is still a tropical storm and the official update still has the max winds at 45 miles an hour so barely holding on to that tropical storm strength, moving to the west-northwest at 15 miles an hour. so the motion, the direction that it's moving has changed just slightly. earlier it was moving west. now it's taking a slightly northward turn. we will watch that over the next several days because that could be critical to what happens as it leaves the caribbean and gets closer to the bahamas.
5:51 pm
as of now the track brings it closer to florida, wider as we go farther out in time, that would be 2:00 p.m. on tuesday. we could see strengthening if the storm survives into the bahamas. at that time the models are still in disagreement what it may do by the time it gets there. more updates tonight and into the weekend, we'll have a much better idea. tonight, mid 50s areas north and west of philadelphia. tomorrow, sunny, low humidity, another beautiful day, low 80s through the afternoon. if you are heading to the shore or delaware beaches this weekend, water temperatures are in about the mid to upper 70s through parts of the shore and the beaches. temperatures will be right around the low 80s for most of the weekend. we do expect to stay dry. if you are hanging around the city, temperatures sunday around 90 degrees, low 90s going into next week. next chance of thunderstorms could be monday. but look at that stretch of 90 degree temperatures, just when you thought the fall weather was getting here, the summer weather is making a comeback. will joe biden get into the presidential race?
