good morning tragedy at the ballpark. >> someone just fell over the upper deck. oh, my gosh. a fan plummets to his death at the yankees braves game in atlanta as horrified fans, players, and coaches looked on. the latest in a string of major league accidents in ballparks this year. this morning more on the investigation. a texas man under arrest for charged with the execution style murder of a sheriff deputy who said the spotlight may be to blame. triple crown winner american

>> you feel it is not coming after you. the size of the bite in the surf board. >> they can tell how big the shark was from the bite. they rnl able to do it. it looks like it was a floating grilled cheese sandwich. >> how big was the shark? >> too big to be close. on a more serious note the top story this morning is the baseball fan who fell to his death during a braves game in atlanta last night. it happening as alex rodriguez is coming up to bat. sheinelle is here with more details. >> reporter: good morning. police are investigating how the fan managed to fall. fans who witnessed the event are still reeling. it was a horrifying scene for thousands of fans at atlanta's turner field. even the game's sports caster. >> someone just fell over the upper deck right below us. oh, my gosh. oh, my gosh. and alex rodriguez was coming

and being introduced. a fan fell from the upper deck. >> witnesses say the man landed head first two sections below. very close to where the families of the players were sitting. >> he came down like a thud on to the concrete steps. >> several people jumped into action including this surgeon sitting nearby. >> we did cpr until the paramedics came and put him in a neck collar on a board and took him away. for about ten minutes or so. it was pretty nerve wracking. people were pretty much in shock. >> cell phone video from another witness shows the victim later being carried out on a stretcher. the man fell to his death in the seventh inning. many people didn't even realize what happened and the game went on. >> i saw the commotion. i thought it was a fight at first. >> major league baseball has been taking closer look at fan safety this season after one woman at boston's fenway park was struck by a broken bat and

another hit by a foul ball at wrigley field. according to espn.com the 60-year-old fan was an atlanta braves season ticketholder who was yelling at alex rodriguez when he lost his balance and went over the railing. this is the third death at turner field since 2008. >> that's tough. >> execution style murder of a sheriff in texas. jacob rascon is in houston for us this morning. jacob, good morning. >> reporter: carson, the community is in mourning and coming together to heal what appears to be an unprovoked killing is reigniting a nationwide debate. >> we pray, our father -- >> reporter: amid the national conversation about questionable police shootings, this seemed disturbingly clear. >> darren would have given that monster the shirt off his back if he asked for it. he didn't have to do what he did. >> reporter: hundreds of people

gathered to honor deputy darren goforth. many knew him. most did not. >> the callousness of what happened is earth shattering. >> reporter: goforth finished filling up with gas. surveillance cameras picked up what happened. shannon miles shot him in the back and kept shooting. miles faces capital murder charges, he has a criminal record but according to the sheriff didn't know his target. >> why did you feel it was important to show up today? >> because i wanted to demonstrate that all lives matter. >> reporter: the seemingly unprovoked killing brings race into the conversation. >> it doesn't matter about black and white anymore. it's just, you know, a coming together of people that really matters and that's what the focus should be about. >> reporter: goforth is

remembered as a hero and leaves behind a wife and two children. >> all the language i know is inadequate for what i want to express. my husband was an incredibly loyal. fiercely so. >> reporter: the community planned a walk to honor the deputy from a nearby christian church to the gas station later tonight. as police say they will release more information about the suspect in a possible motive tomorrow. carson? >> jacob rascon on the story for us in houston. thanks. dylan, meantime is following a triple weather threat. deadly high winds in the northwest, and the remains of erika, and the hurricane that threatens hawaii. >> good morning. there's a lot going on. the storm in the pacific northwest is responsible for two deaths. a 36-year-old man was killed when a tree fell on his car and

a 10-year-old girl was killed at birthday party by a falling tree. winds gusted up to 90 miles per hour. there were a half million people without power yet during the storm. this is the moisture streaming in producing heavy rain. the worst of the winds are over. it's more of a winter time storm system you see when the winds gust that high there are no leaves on the trees. so it was a different situation to get this big of a storm when the leaves are on the tree and it causes a lot of trees to topple. today we should see wind gusts 45 to 55 miles per hour. tropical storm erika is no more. now we have rain. heavy rain moving through miami this morning. we could see as much as three to five inches of rain in florida. we could see some areas of flooding when you get the heavier pockets of rain. that's going to be the concern. we have flood watches in effect. today and tomorrow we could see on the southwest coast of florida three to five inches of rain. i want to point out a category

four uhurricane i think nice s-. it's not going to get that close kilo and downgrading to a category 1. a new poll out of iowa shows donald trump is still the party's favorite while hillary clinton's position has slipped considerably. chuck todd the moderator from "meet the press." good morning. >> good morning. >> let's talk trump. for months people said it would be near impossible for the presidential candidacy to last this morning, at least as a republican. the new poll comets out likely gop caucus goers in iowa, the numbers are still strong. chuck, it seems to be more than just a summer fling. >> absolutely. they're very strong and actually the most significant number -- it may be ben carson at 18%. what do trump and carson have in common? neither held effective office. the two of them together cobbling together nearly 50% of

the electorate by themselves in iowa. it shows you that this anti-establishment sentiment in iowa is huge. in fact, i think the most important number in this poll 75% of iowa republicans say they have an unfavorability or unsatisfactory review of republicans in congress. they're mad at their own party. that tells you why, carson, they're attracted to trump and carson. >> for the democrats extracting what we can figure out from the poll you look at hillary clinton not great. looks like she lost nearly a third of her supporters in iowa since may. bernie sanders gained a little bit. only a seven-point deficit there. it was an assertive week last week. she was aggressive to republicans and app gettic over the personal use on the e-mail server thing. can she survive the scandal? >> the good news for her in the poll 61% of iowa democrats said the e-mail controversy was not an issue for them. this isn't an issue among

triple crown winner american pharoah was in the lead in the final moments of the travers stakes until rallied from behind and beat the odds to overtake the champion horse. >> american pharoah defeated. >> i see the horse and now he's coming back to me. >> reporter: in june, american pharoah became the first horse in 37 years to sweep the kentucky derby, the preakness, and the belmont stakes. the quest for greatness began last may. then two weeks later was another triumphant finish at the preakness. the winning streak capped off with a triumph at the belmont stakes, the toughest leg of the triple crown. a much longer race than the kentucky derby and the preakness.

morning. he and his partner were talking to a man at a house on mohawk avenue. when they tried to go inside the home, the man shut the door and fired two shots. hanley was hit in his bulletproof vest and leg. officers returned fire and hit the suspect in the elbow. s.w.a.t. teams arrived. after a brief standoff, police arrested the man. he's now being treated at the hospital for a gunshot wound and is facing a potential charge. i'm rosemary connors. we'll be back here in just about 30 minutes. for a full hour and a half of news. have a good one.

when you look at the crews on these boats, 40% of the people on these boats have never even stepped foot on a sailboat before entering the competition. they are way out of their comfort zone. about to race 24 hours a day in extreme weather living on top of each other below deck. race officials call this an endurance test like no other. it's a death-defying race around the world. through brutal weather and treacherous seas. if they live through it, the rest of their lives will never be the same. amazingly, in order to sign up no sailing experience is necessary. in this race, attitude is everything. all walks of life, physical abilities, and ages are welcome. this 68-year-old texan is the oldest woman in the competition. proving that retired doesn't necessarily mean too tired. >> you're never too old to do anything you want. you just have to have the

us. it wasn't a hurricane but a state of mind. if you were in the storm zone, it was the only thing you thought of for months and years. the storm didn't come and didn't go. it stayed and in many ways, it's still here. ♪ the gulf of mexico roared up out of there. storm surge almost 30 feet. nobody has ever heard of a 30-foot storm surge. and wiped out just house after house after house, and as you can see, it's not exactly like there's a re rush to rebuild here, either. >> when people think of the hurricane they think of new orleans. but mississippi got hammered, too. days after the storm earnest got his restaurant open again. his gum bbo is second to none. >> it was worth it. we got to cooking.
