nbc 10 news starts now. a police department in mourning again. after an off-duty officer died in a hit and run crash. just ahead, how police tracked down the driver and what we know about the fallen officer thus far. happening today, hitting the streets to prepare for the pope. you'll see what city leaders plan to do today to emphasize the positive ahead of the pontiff's visit next month. a live look at center city philadelphia. it is cloudy out there this morning, a bit muggy, too, at 78 degrees already. and we'll warm into the 90s today. that mark on the thermometer will become rather familiar this week. let's just put it that way for

now. good morning. welcome to nbc 10 news today. i'm chris cato. i'll leave the explaining of the hot weather to this man, meteorologist bill henley who is standing by with his first alert forecast. hi, bill, it's monday. >> i'm tracking showers this morning. you mention clouds are producing light scattered showers in delaware and south jersey, not reaching their way to philadelphia, though. the clouds are over the city. just very light showers to start with, will not last all day. what will be climbing is the heat. as clouds stay with us through the morning hours, the temperatures will climb none the also. 76 at 6:00, by 9:00, 79 and into the 80s at noontime and building. once the sun starts to break out this afternoon we'll make it into the 90s. your neighborhood by neighborhood forecast to show you which spots will not see 90s today when i come back in ten minutes. right now, jessica boyington has a monday morning look at your commute. jessica? >> yes, bill. good morning, everyone. monday morning. it's looking okay so far.

the vine street expressway, right around 24th street we onlç have a three-minute drive time. westbound lanes right in here. the right lane heading into 30th street station, eastbound if you're heading towards 95, really no problems there so far. everything is moving along. as for the drive times toward the center city area from 95 or the schuylkill expressway, they're okay. we're green. average speed 62 miles per hour. the blue route is looking okay as well, headed southbound from the schuylkill expressway up towards 95, no problems there. mass transit, no problems or delays yet. updates coming up in the next ten minutes on new jersey roads. for the second time in nine days, the 90-day police department is mourning the death of an officer. yesterday, an off-duty sergeant died in a hit and run crash on roosevelt boulevard. nbc 10's katy zachry is live outside the 12th district where that officer works. what do we know this morning? >> reporter: we're told that

lamar poole had a repeat tagsutr taking rookie officers under his wing. he had nearly two decades of experience on the philadelphia police force. he was off duty when he was riding a motorcycle along roosevelt boulevard. accident investigators say this silver toyota turned in front of his motorcycle near devereaux street. lamar poole sustained severe head injuries and died a short time later. the driver of the silver toyota was stopped -- rather witnesses say he stopped for a second but then drove away. now, coming up in the next half hour, we'll look into how that hit and run suspect was eventually caught. we'll look into more about lamar poole who died so severely yesterday and we'll also explain why philadelphia police officers this morning are thanking a quick-thinking tow truck driver for the arrest. reporting live in southwest philadelphia, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. and the death of officer

poole comes asç the police department is still grieving the loss of another officer in an off-duty crash. sergeant raphafael ali died nin days ago when his pickup truck crashed into a tree. police are working at whether sergeant ali fell asleep at the wheel. he was a ten-year veteran of the force. an officer in delaware county had a brush with death over the weekend. hear from the ridley park police officer who was saved by his bulletproof vest. 4:04 now. new from overnight, a man faces charges in connection with a shooting in west philadelphia. look at this video. police arrested that man around 11:30 last night on rodman street moments after someone was shot, someone shot a man a block away at 52nd and hazel avenue. that victim is in critical condition. police have not given us the suspect's name or a possible motive. philadelphia police are investigating a shooting that damage a car.

officers tell us they found 20 shell casings on rising sun avenue on north philadelphia. at least one bullet hit the car. it's not clear whether anyone was hurt. police are questioning a woman after a 5-year-old girl went missing for almost 24 hours over the weekend. .girl's babysitter reported her missing around 2:00 a.m. sunday. she said she left the girl in the care of another woman while she went to pick up school supplies saturday and when she came back, both were gone. yesterday afternoon, the woman and missing child were spotted walking down the street. the chald's mother could not be found during the ordeal. so far, no one has been charged. a crash in north philadelphia sent a car into a store front. you can see here what it looked like yesterday around noon. two cars collided at lehigh avenue and 9th street. medics took one person to the hospital in critical condition. police are still investigating that crash. happening today, the contract between the philadelphia archdiocese and its teachers union runs out today.ç

now, early bird negotiations that started in april broke off last week. the union said it rejected the church's latest offer because of salary issues. both sides have agreed to start full negotiations now. classes are scheduled to begin one week from tomorrow for the archdiocese. it's back-to-school day today for students at the mass community charter school in philadelphia. more than 1,300 kids will begin classes at the campus in summ summerton. in chester conte today, students in the coatesville area school district will start cracking the books again today. colin elementary school got a major face lift and a new principal. they will start with new computers, other tech knowledge upgrades and a new math curriculum. philadelphia takes another step to help businesses prepare for the pope. teams led by mayor michael

nutter today will deliver hundredses of marketing kits to businesses across the city. these kits contain things like signs with the hash tag open in phl to send the message that businesses will be open during the papal visit. and starting today, a new exhibit inspired by the pope's visit will open at the academy of natural sciences in center city. the clergy and the academy's collections will display plan the and animal specimens collected by 18th and 19th century clergy who are also amateur scientists. you can see that exhibit in the academy's library starting this afternoon at 1:00. ahead at 4:30, archbishop charles chaput has a message for people worried about inconveniences. why he's urging people to be not afraid. the nbc 10 news app has everything you need to know about the pope'sç visit and th

the clouds are helping to hold in the heat from yesterday. it will be a hot and humid day today. clouds this morning with breaks of sunshine. should be back in the lower 90s this afternoon. we're heading into a heat wave. the temperatures will take a leap over the next few days into the middle 90s. 71 agrees in doylestown, philadelphia, there you can see the clouds at 78 degrees. millville is mostly cloudy. 75. right now, clear view of boathouse row from the mellon bank building in center city. sunshine will break through this afternoon. that's when we return to the 90s. this morning we're starting 0 of with clouds. you get to see them at the shore, cape may, atlantic city and those clouds extend inland. farther to the north and west, there are breaks in the clouds. this afternoon we'll likely see a break not only of clouds but these isolated, very light showers. just a fe sprinkles in south jersey. 82 degrees for the pocono

happening today, family and friends will attend a wake for the photographer who was killed on live television last week in virginia. nbc 10's tracy davidson is live in our digital operations center with more on this service for adam ward. tracy? >> adam ward's family will receive friends at a high school in southwestern virginia, not far from where a gunman killed him and reporter alison parker on wednesday. people gathered at a roanoke church to play and remember ward and parker. jeff mark spoke about the team's sensitivity and sense of humor. >> i want to play softball with adam again and i want to see alison dance. i will in the wonderful memories they gave me, they gave us. >> reporter: parker and ward were interviewing a chamber of commerce leader about tourism

live during a morning broadcast when they were ambushed and killed. the woman who they were interviewing is still in the hospital. the man who shot them used to work at the television station. he was fired two years ago. a lot of people had been posting memorial pictures from social media. this is one from the city of roano roanoke. it marked the day, month and year of the shooting over color bars. they staffers enjoyed ward's favorite meal, pepperoni pizza and ginger ale without ice. alison parker, her obituary says a celebration of her life will happen at a later day after a memorial service. scholarships have been set up in both of their names. in the digital operations center, tracy davi son, nbc 10 news. a march was held yesterday in honor of the texas sheriff's deputy who was shot and killed while filling up his police

cruiser at a gas station friday night. hundreds gathered on the streets of houston to remember deputy darren goforth. the march started at west houston church and ended at the exact location he was killed. this morning we're hearing from a family friend who spoke to goforth's wife before yesterday's march. >> all the language that i know is inadequate for what i want to express. my husband was an incredibly intricate blend of toughness and gentility. he was always loyal, fiercely so. >> the suspect, shannon myles is charged with capital murder and is expected in court today. deputy goforth had no previous contact with myles and the shooting appears to be unprovoked. an iconic painter with deep local roots passed away friday night. nelson shanks made headlines

after including a subtle reference of monica lewinsky in the portrait of president clinton. at 4:17 this morning, hollywood is remembering legendary filmmaker wes craven. he died surrounded by family after a long battle with brain cancer. he was best known for horror movies like "nightmare on elm street" and "scream." he was a nature lover and avid bird conservationist. wes craven was 76. blue bell ice cream returns to some grocery store freezers much after the listeria recall prompted officials to pull a majority of products from stores. the texas-based company is rolling out its product in five phases. back in april, blue bell was linked to ten listeria illnesses in four states, including three deaths in kansas. ç safety at the ballpark. major league baseball is taking a closer look at that issue after a fan fell to his death at

turner field in atlanta over the weekend. the ballpark observed a moment of silence for greg murray at yesterday's game. saturday night, murray fell 50 feet from the upper deck while yelling at yankee slugger alex rodriguez. it's the third death at turner field since 2008. that's on top of broken bats and foul balls hitting fans at other stadiums. safety rules adopted almost a century ago may be outdated. public entertainment in at that time are different than 2015. included was going to the opera and attending vaudeville. >> police are still investigating. in indianapolis, an underground water main broke and created an unusual scene on a

city street. steam coming out of an open manhole. the pipe that busted runs above a steam line and the cold water was rushing on to the hot line. cold and hot equal steam. let's get to some breaking news now. back in philadelphia, this is in philadelphia's kensington neighborhood. we're on the scene of a house fire here. this is at a row home on the 3,000 block of arbor street. it looks like fire crews on top of homes working on the roof. you see light smoke coming off the top of the building but nothing really heavy. it looks like they have things under control, checking, perhaps, for hot spots. we don't know if anyone was inside the home when this broke out. there are no reports of injuries. we'll let youç know if anythin changes with this. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> just about 20 minutes after 4:00. it is warm and muggy and cloudy

over center city. a live view at center city from the adventure aquarium. 78 degrees. that's 7 degrees warmer than yesterday at this time. a southwesterly wind right now at 10 miles an hour. a little stronger than it will be this afternoon. dry at the shore. we are tracking scattered light showers in south jersey and delaware. most of the area is clear of those showers. but nobody is in the cool this morning. 73 in washington township, horsham at 72, 75 in wilmington. all these numbers should be in the 60s. and it should be in the 50s or low 60s for shenandoah and allentown, 69 right now in allentown. in the delaware, middletown, 76 degrees. 76 in beach haven in south jersey it's 72 in millville. breaks in the clouds, north and west. we will get sunshine breaking through this afternoon. it will be a mostly cloudy morning. may not see a lot of sunshine this afternoon.

but just enough to warm temperatures into the upper 80s and low 90s. hot today and getting hotter tomorrow. 94 degrees after morning low of 71 degrees. the humidity is elevated on wednesday and thursday, along with the temperature up to 95 degrees for both ways. the heat wave continues on friday. we could see scattered showers and thunderstorms with high near 90 on friday and then not quite so hot this weekend. 88 with sunny skies saturday and partly sunny. also up to 88 sunday. >> all right. 4:21 now. let's get a check of the highways. nbc 10's first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington has all her cameras in place looking out for any trouble spots on the roads. anything popping up yet? >> we're still doing okay. we're doing a jersey check right now. 259, this is actually out in hamilton on route 33. you can see if you're headed northbound or southbound, no problems.
