nbc 10 news starts now. preparing for the pope. today we will learn more details about the city's plans and just ahead, meet one monsenior who has quite the task in front of him. and what you need to know to stay safe and avoid a ticket. and hot, hot, hot, the calendar says september 1st but it may feel more like the dog days of july and august out there today. 74 degrees in the city right now. not too shabby. this is nbc 10 news today on this tuesday. i'm chris cato. we begin with meteorologist bill henley and his first alert forecast. we got up to 09 and above 90

yesterday. >> we'll be above that mark today. in fact most of the rest of the workweek, temperatures are going to be very hot. we're getting a warm start. 74 in philadelphia. not quite as warm as yesterday morning but just as humid. 68 degrees right now in pottstown. look at trenton and wilmington both at 72 degrees. a hot, humid day ahead. the temperatures climbing 74 degrees by 6:00, by 9:00 this morning, 80 degrees and 88 degrees at noontime and climbing. those numbers ahead of yesterday's numbers. we'll go through the forecast neighborhood by neighborhood when i'm back in ten minutes. right now, jessica boyington has your first alert traffic. we're on the schuylkill expressway, we're not seeing much in terms of traffic. right around montgomery drive, we have a 12-minute drive time on the eastbound side. if you're heading into the center city area, these are the eastbound lanes right in here. watch out for the road work sign. otherwise you'll do just fine.

eastbound into the king of prussia area. no incident to report on 95 southbound from woodhaven road to the vine street expressway, only a 13-minute trip. massç transit doing great so f this morning. coming up in ten minutes, we'll have a check on new jersey roads. new from overnight, a motorcycle rider escaped serious injury after colliding with a mini van in north philadelphia. it happened at broad and ontario streetlights around 1:00 this morning. the motorcycle driver was taken to the hospital in stable condition. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. and look at this, we now have new video in from a crash in lakewood, ocean conte that injured a baby, a child and an adult. that is a mangled stroller in the middle of the road. a driver slammed into it late last night on river avenue in lakewood. skyforce 10 flew over the scene late last night. you can see the stroller in the median. a baby and another child suffered serious injuries. we're still working to find out

their conditions and if police have filed any charges. speaking of children, and dangers on the road, happening today, the law has changed for child safety seats in new jersey. if you don't have the right type of car seat, you could get a fine. nbc 10's matt delucia is live in pen salk within deta-- pennsauk with details in the law change. >> here's what you need to know if you're a parent, you have kids in the car. up to 2 years old and 30 pounds, a child must be in a rear-facing seat. that is even if they have long legs and have to bend their knees to be in a position for that vehicle. up to 4 years old or 40 pounds, front-facing seats must have a five-point harness and the booster seat requirement changes to 8 or under 57 inches.

>> previous legislation didn't deal with that. it was just very vague. this is much more delineated. it gives the police more guidance. >> reporter: fines as of yesterday would be going up to $25. now those fines can go up to $75. a lot of appearance, though, they were confused under this now old law and we're hearing from them, theirç thoughts abo the change to this car seat law. we'll have that coming up in about 30 minutes. live in pennsauken, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. 4:04. police continue to investigate an unlicensed funeral home in philadelphia where investigators yesterday found decomposing bodies. acting on a tip, police inspected hawkins funeral home on 53rd street in west philadelphia. they say they found three bodes inside, two of them were decomposing. police told us those bodies should have been refrigerated. nbc 10's george spencer questioned the funeral home

director. >> the bodies are to be cremated. >> why aren't they refrigerated? >> we don't refrigerate bodies that are being cremated. >> police say they should have been refrigerated. police are waiting on a warn to the remove the bodies from the property. yesterday's discovery came almost a week after police found three decomposing bodies inside a garage in philadelphia. records show that the ruin fall homeowner was licensed but her funeral home was not. and she may face fines. a montgomery county lawyer is accused of raping one of his clients. investigators say on august 6th, a woman who hired vincent cirillo jr. told police cirillo raped her. police investigated the claim and arrested cirillo yesterday. no one answered when denise

nakano stopped by cirillo's office in norristown. he posted $100,000 bail. penndot is preparing for the pope by putting the brakes on some construction projects. a live look at the vine street expressway this morning where work on several bridges will stop today. crews will also begin removing construction equipment. the project will resume october 1st after the pope leaves town. as we've been telling you, the pope's visit isn't just a philadelphia event, obviously.ç people will be coming here from all over the word. many of them are vietnamese catholic and they need a place to stay. nbc 10's katy zachry is live in center city with more. katy? >> reporter: hi, chris, that's right. we're learning a lot more about the world meeting of families and those who are coming here for that weekend late september. vietnam is one of the top countries represented for the world meeting of families, more

than 1,000 vietnamese catholics have registered for the events that weekend. even more will pack the parkway for the papal mass. this man is in charge of finding accommodations for so many of them. he has st. helena catholic church in north philadelphia where they are already making repairs for the papal weekend. he's president of the federation of vietnamese catholics which means hundreds have reached out to him, needing a place to stay. at the parish's con vent and rectory, they're getting rooms ready for that week and he's also asked his congregation for help. >> i asked the families please will you host and take them in, please feed them as well to alleviate my burdens. >> reporter: coming up in the next hour, i'm working on a story about how the father helped hand select a small group of people from our area that will appear on the papal stage with the pope. reporting live along the

the seventh player in the case is waiting for trial in family court. joining forces to save lives. today the american red cross and philadelphia fire department are teaming up for the no more fire death campaign. fire officials are handing out and installing hundreds of smoke detectors across the city. since july, this partnership has helped install almost 2,000 smoke alarms in high-risk neighborhoods. the fire commissioner says the majority of deadly fires last year happened in homes that did not have working smoke detectors. in the lehigh valley, allentown is ef booing up its police force. today the mayor will hold a swearing in and badge ceremony for a new group of officers. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> nine minutes after 4:00. it's another warm, muggy morning. the temperatures have come down a little bit but during the day, we're turning up the heat, into the 90s today. the next few days will be hotter

three-minute drive time on the westbound side. westbound right here, that heads towards the schuylkill expressway, 30th street station. from 95 up to that point, less than five-minute trip still. if you're headed eastbound, a little work zone, it's not taking out any lanes, just something to watch out for. heading into new jersey on the 42 freeway, five-minute drive times whether you're headed northbound or southbound up towards the walt whitman bridge. no problems on the walt. as for the rest of the area bridges, they're doing okay also. the tac pal is doing good, the ben is doing great, no problems on the betsy. cameras are rolling as an suv crashed through the front of a storm. but this was no accident. the police are calling this is a very well planned smash and grab. and we say good-bye to 76ers great. respects to the man they called

4:15. listen to this developing story here. an atlanta area police officer is in critical condition after being shot after responding to a call at the wrong home. the officer responded to a burglary call but went to the wrong home and ended up engaging in gunfire with another homeowner. the officer was rushed into surgery after investigators say he lost a lot of blood. the homeowner was also shot and the homeowner's dog was killed during the incident. the georgia bureau of investigations plans to investigate that shooting. in texas, we now know the man accused of shooting and killing a sheriff's deputy completely emptied his .40 caliber handgun during the shooting.

shannon miles fired 15 shots at deputy darren goforth friday night as the deputy was pumping gas at a gas station near houston. miles has two public defenders representing him against a prosecution that will not need to prove there was motive. >> the why of an offense isn't a element of the crime, prosecutors aren't obligated to prove it. >> deputy goforth was a ten-year veteran of the department. he will be laid to rest friday. since saturday, community members have donated $70,000 already to his family. meantime, an online fund-raiser topped $100,000. 4:16 now. today in the lehigh valley, people can pay respects to former sixers great darryl dawkins. dawkins' family is hole a public viewing at st. paul's evangelical church in catasaqus.

27-year-old adam ward will be laid to rest in roanoke today. ward's family is encouraging those who come to the funeral to wear the colors of his alma mater, salem high school andç virginia tech university. people embraced and comforted his family yesterday while his high school football came came to pay respects to the avid sports fan. ward and alison parker were shot to death during a live television interview. the gunman, a disgruntled former co-worker later took his own life. man's best friend was brought into the roanoke tv station to help people cope with last week's tragedy. therapy dogs came to the station. many are still in shock over the shooting that cut the lives short of the two young

journalists. we're getting a look at a carefully choreographed smash and grab. this shows an suv slamming through the front of a clowing store. several people jump out, almost a trojan horse type approach. they wave their friends down from across the street. the burglars were in and out in a few minutes, taking nearly 70 pair of jeans that cost almost $200 a pair. this was a high-speed chase, then bailed out on foot onlandry to run out of gas. it appears he just got tired after reaching this residential area and gave up. he laid down on the ground with his arms and legs out until police took him into custody. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. coming up on 19 minutes after 4:00. get ready for another hot, humid

day today. probably hotter than what we experienced yesterday. right now we are in the clear. nice, clear view of boathouse row. the temperatures are coming down. it's running cooler than yesterday morning at this time, thanks to clear skies. 74 degrees in philadelphia. that's down by 4. look at the humidity. 85% and just a little bit of a breeze, certainly not a cooling breeze at this hour. completely clear looking across the delaware, no sign of any fog in the area this morning. none expected. 60s right now inç chester spris in kennett square where it's in the low 70s for wilmington and trenton. off to the north and west, 66. in quakertown, codesville, also 66 degrees and the temperatures are falling at this hour. but likely to stay in the 70s in delaware, middletown and dover at 73 degrees. woodbine, the atlantic city airport both at 73 as well. 70s to start with. during the day today, skies are nice and clear. we'll see enough sunshine to quickly warm our temperatures through the 80s and into the 90s

this afternoon. showers, clouds, all well to our south. we will stay in the clear, so get ready for a sunny, hot and humid day. low to mid-90s today with a light breeze out of the north at 3 to 8 miles an hour. that might keep a lid on the humidity but it will still be elevated during the day today. we're not going it see much in the way of relief until we get to the later part of the week. another hot one wednesday and it turns hotter on thursday. by friday, the heat starts to subside and we could see showers and thunderstorms. the thunderstorms are out of here for the weekend. as the humidity drops, sunshine back in the low 90s monday. all right, bill, thank you for that. 4:20. let's get a check of area roadways. nbc 10's first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington is watching the action or lack thereof on 95. >> we are checking out 95 right now. first, right around the vine street expressway and approaching the ben franklin bridge where we have a 13-minute drive time heading up towards

this point on the southbound side from woodhaven road up towards the vine street expressway. no problems there. you can see that reflecteden our cameras as for the pa tornado pike, green and smooth sailing no problems westbound or eastbound from route 1 up towards valley forge. at the moment that will take you about a 23-minute trip. if you're heading out the door in lower merion, an accident scene on belmont avenue and east city avenue. mass transit, no problems so far. parents at a main line catholic school will meet to discuss a teacher who was fired because of her same-sex marriage. in july we told you about margie winters. she was let go from the waldron mercer academy in merion. tonight's meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. the first day of school is often full of excitement and that was just on the bus ride for these kids.
