"today," tuesday, september 1, 2015. >> announcer: from nbc news this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. good morning, welcome to "toda "today." it's tuesday morning. matt has the week off. how many days until election day? >> i don't know. >> politics will be the top story for a lot of those days and it is today. fresh headache for hillary clinton. the state department releasing more of her e-mails tonight. we'll talk about the impact on her campaign with chuck todd. first too dream who is following the story. >> it's a story that won't go away. the largest batch of her e-mails yet today. more than 7,000 pages released

under court order. roughly 150 are now classified although they were not at the time they were sent. this time none were top secret. but 150 were classified confidential in the last few days. including this 2010 e-mail about iran. press reports the state department was softening the administration's stance in nuclear talks with iran. clinton writes, the "wall street journal" says it is a reversal of position. what gives? clinton's private e-mail system did cause confusion. huma abedin writes some official e-mails weren't getting through. abedin writes it is clearly a state versus outside e-mail issue. in another exchange a member of the state department help desk seemed unaware the e-mail address was clinton's, abedin writing they had no idea it was you. they did use caution.

despite the e-mail system clinton struggled to set up her ipad asking an aide how to charge it later writing i don't know if i have wifi. how do i find out? and some are not state secrets. she e-mails for milk for tea and the tv schedules for "parks and recreation" and "the good wife." with a quarter of the e-mails released the controversy is taking a political toll. many democrats are nervous about what the fbi may find. republicans are pouncing on the controversy. as dick cheney did on cnn. >> i think it was sloppy and unprofessional. it reflects a lack of understanding about how easy it is for adversaries to tap into communications. >> reporter: meanwhile clinton's once enormous lead over bernie sanders in iowa has shrunk to seven points in the most recent poll.

sanders told me he rejects any similarity. >> no. i don't accept that for a moment. we are not engaged here in demagoguery, racist attacks, outrageous attacks against mexicans. >> reporter: now trump faces competition from dr. ben carson, now tying trump along likely iowa caucus goers in a new poll. closely watching clinton's e-mail troubles, joe biden. he's considering a race and if he decides to give it his all despite the tragic death of his son beau. and this may be a season where his attributes are matched with the times. >> thank you so much. let's turn to chuck todd, moderator of "meet the press." good morning. >> good morning. >> taking this e-mail controversy, the central accusation, what people are worried about is did she mishandle classified information? with this latest batch of 7,000

plus e-mails is there a smoking gun on the issue? >> there's not the whole knowingly and that's the key word. >> what does she know. >> whether she knowingly passed around classified information. there is no evidence to suggest that story doesn't hold up. remember, these are e-mails she chose to release. these are still e-mails she chose to release and gave the state department. so there's that caveat. while she may be out of legal jeopardy as far as this release is concerned there is still a political aspect. the most damning e-mail is the one from huma that says, hey, i.t. didn't know they had your e-mail in here. she couldn't get e-mail at the time. she said they didn't know about your private e-mail set-up. how was it more convenient to have your own system? who has i.t. at home? isn't it easier to get your e-mail via work? i think that excuse is the one

that's the least believable. the most logical explanation is she was trying to get out of congressional information and freedom of information act. >> clinton campaign is saying this is a media-driven, partisan story from republicans who want to do damage to her, prevent her from becoming president. do you now see evidence inside the campaign they view this as a problem? >> they do now. they know they have a perception problem with democrat elites. members of congress want to help them and they tonigdon't know h. they feel the campaign isn't giving them explanations they need. there is internal friction, some led by president clinton who is annoyed there aren't more surrogates out there defending hillary clinton. you will see an attempt by the campaign to appease nervous democrats. >> let's jump to the republican side. andrea pointed out a poll, likely iowa republican caucus goers.

donald trump is on top but now tied by ben carson. are we talking about ben carson enough? >> we are not. the des moines register poll and this is the second in a row that's shown carson surging. he's leading among the most important group in iowa, christian conservatives. look at the last two winners in iowa. they won thanks to evangelical christian conservatives, huckabee and santorum. ben carson appeals more to evangelicals than anybody else. an outsider and appealing to evangelicals. combine that, it might be an unstoppable force in iowa, even with donald trump. take donald trump out of the equation and carson might be more powerful. let's see how he handles his moment in the sun. >> let's talk about jeb bush. seems he's been much more aggressive, going on offense against donald trump. does it make sense for him that the trump voters would never be his voters no matter what. looking strong and going after trump may please his base, the

establishment. >> his theory is this. the campaign, 30% for trump, let's say. and he has 100% name i.d., 70% of republicans know him and don't want anything to do with donald trump. that's his strategy. the problem is donald trump doesn't play by ordinary rules. when you pick a fight, he can pick one back. >> chuck todd, thank you very much. lots to chew over. >> thanks, chuck. meantime, investigators in phoenix are trying to figure out if they have a serial sniper after a string of shootings on the same interstate. here's nbc's joe fryer. >> reporter: the search is on after the state patrol says four vehicles were shot within 48 hours, all along a single stretch of interstate 10 in phoenix. >> next thing i know, i hear a loud bang. didn't think anything of it. >> reporter: when robert mcdonald stopped for a coke he noticed something unusually on the tour bus. >> i did a walk around, and said that's a bullet hole.

atlanta. police officer near atlanta shot on monday after police responded to a burglary call at the wrong house. officials say when the officers arrived they entered through an unlocked rear door. shots fired. both the officer and the homeowner were hit. the officer is now in critical condition t. homeowner's dog was killed. turns out the officers only had a vague description of the location and not the actual trace. an investigation now under way. when a kentucky council clerk arrived to work she'll have to decide whether to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples or be fined or arrested. the supreme court rejected an appeal from kim davis who argued issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples goes against her religion. president obama is warning that the moment is almost upon us when it would be too late to address global warming. the president kicked off the glacier conference in anchorage, alaska, by challenging world

unsolved mysteries, but we thought the debris would solve it. the silence from french investigators since then led to some reports that they won't be able to prove the debris is from the missing plane and that the evidence trail has reached a dead end. amid the painstaking search for answers doubts and for some families, despair. when french police lifted aircraft debris from an indian ocean beach it seemed the mystery of mh-370 had lifted, too. the plane had disappeared without a trace but a trace had been found, it seemed. but one month on french investigators can't confirm the debris is from the plane. why? because a piece of it is missing. no one disputes the debris is from a boeing 777 and it is clear it is a wing flap. what's missing is a metal data plate whose serial number would tie it to 370.

>> they are never going to find that. they have to find other ways to match this part to mh-370. >> reporter: so far only malaysia's prime minister has said the debris is from mh370. >> it is indeed from mh-370. >> reporter: french prosecutors won't go that far, simply saying there is a very strong likelihood it's from the missing plane. a month on, the cautious french are still testing the part at their military lab. the prosecutor has yet to issue an update on findings. but officials from boeing, the u.s., australia, and malaysia are confident that circumstantial evidence pointing to mh370 is overwhelming. >> there is no other logical explanation as to how a flaperon could be in that part of the world in the ocean and it is apparent it's been floating for some period of time for all the barnacle growth. >> reporter: caught amid this, the relatives of the 239 people

on board. still grieving, more than 17 months on. still uncertain as the world waits for conclusive proof. and this morning a spokesman for the families of the chinese passengers on board has told nbc news he's surprised and confused by delays to the investigation and the mixed messages after so long. but remember, savannah, the debris is from a 777. only one of those is missing. and investigators from all countries have little or no doubt it is from mh-370. >> the families really want the clari clarity. bill, thank you so much. willie? >> they say there is no such thing as bad press and apparently that rings true for the controversial extramarital dating website ashley madison. stephanie gosk has an update. good morning. >> hey, willie. experts and analysts predicted the hack would be the end of ashley madison. but the company with the catch phrase "life is short, have an

affair," says those looking for a fling are still signing up by the hundreds of thousands. ♪ >> reporter: 32 million user s promised discreet affairs were exposed. their names, e-mails and sexual performances promising to teach adulterers and ashley madison a lesson. still parent company avidlifemedia says the website is thriving. recent media reports predicting the imminent demise of ashley madison are greatly exaggerated, read a statement released monday. this week alone hundreds of thousands of new users signed up, including nearly 90,000 women. the company denied a report that many of the female profiles are bogus, but the numbers are difficult to verify. >> i don't know that they have a method for determining when someone signs up whether they are male or female unless it is a paid credit card they have verified is legitimate.

people can sign up for accounts with no verification whatsoever. >> reporter: just a day after news reports appeared claiming josh duggar had opened an account on the site he admitted he was unfaithful to his wife. while other users are harder to identify. there is no way to know if the e-mails used in profiles are legitimate. more than 10,000 users appeared to be u.s. government employees. others revealed included celebrities, even a few members of the clergy. investigators say the revelations may have led to cases of online blackmail, possibly two suicides. >> the social impact behind this leak, we are talking about families. we're talking about their children, their wives and male partners. >> reporter: they are looking for vulnerabilities in the system. >> forensic investigators are trying to find vulnerabilities themselves. they are trying to stay a step

camden, 676, you can see right in here, slow going. almost at a complete standstill. that's headed up towards the ben franklin bridge. getting into philly will take you a while. center city area, 59 southbound from woodhaven road up to the vine, 33 minutes. which is normally a 13-minute trip. you're at least hitting 20-minute delays on 95. the schuylkill expressway into the center city area, adding on ten minutes, the blue route doing just fine. vai? happening today, philadelphia police commissioner charles ramsey will lead a discussion on crime, justice and the american prison system. ramsey will make the presentation of eastern state penitentiary tonight. it's part of the ongoing search light series which features nationally recognized leaders speaking about crime in america. he's expected to talk about community policing and the lessons learned from the recent riots in baltimore and ferguson. allentown is beefing up its police force there. the mayor will hold a swearing in and badge ceremony for a new group of officers.

night are four times more likely to get a cold than those who get at least seven hours of shut-eye. sleep was more important than age, stress or any other factor considered in the study. if your kids prefer cookies over vegetables, your baby food may be to blame. researchers found that commercial baby foods can trigger a sweet tooth often because they contain fruit juice and higher sugar produce such as sweet potatoes, apples, bananas and carrots. as a result babies don't appreciate bitter flavors. teach your toddlers to cook home-cooked vegetables. got it, savannah? meanwhile, morty the dog has a new friend. he climbed to the ledge of his owner's 14th floor balcony in oregon. ted nelson noticed the dog and ran outside to catch him. morty fell right onto ted's chest. ted said it was a huge relief to hear the dog yelp.

replacing one loan with another that has better terms. typically a lower interest rate. there is a big opportunity that didn't used to exist in refinancing student loans, both federal and private loans and lowering your interest rate. one lender out there which is a leader in the market is saving their customers an average of $14,000. huge amount of money. >> are there certain people who are best candidates for refinancing? >> this applies to students and parents. if you have a parent-plus loan, check it out. anybody who's got a relatively new student loan should definitely check this out. especially if you've got more than $10,000 in debt. less than that often doesn't make sense. >> you have a four-step process to make the burden easier. let's start with the first step to take stock. >> you need to know who you owe and how much. you have to lay out your loans. this is important. a lot of freshman under estimate

the amount they owe by at least 20%. you may owe more than you think. if you are not sure, you can look up your federal loans in the national student loan database on the at the present time of education's website. we have a link on our site to make it easy. you want to know how much you owe and what are the interest rates on every loan. >> is there a way to know whether a fixed loan or adjustable rate is better for me? >> as you look to refinance, that's a big question you have to ask yourself. six loans are starting these days at 3.5% interest rate. variable rate loans are lower than that at 1.9. if you have been reading the newspaper interest rates are going up. probably not so far or so fast. i would say most people would be better off locking into a fixed rate loan. >> you say see if you can do better. basically shop around a little bit. >> you've got to shop around. the best place to compare loans is a wednesday called magnify money taum. click through to find a list of

today but right now what we're looking at is sun glare on the schuylkill expressway so right around 202 and the eastbound lanes are actually in this shot doing a little worse but the total drive time westbound about a half hour from the vine street expressway to the blue route. adding about 20 minutes to the commute on the schuylkill for the morning. same story on 95 from woodhaven to the vine street expressway. 30 minute trip, only about 12 minutes, so give yourself extra time before you head out. today the american red cross and philadelphia fire department are teaming up for their no more fire deaths campaign. firefighters and volunteer will install hundreds of smoke detectors in homes and talk to residents about fire prevention. since july the partnership has installed almost 2,000 smoke detectors. 22 people have died in fires in philadelphia this year. 32 deaths all of last year. i'm chris cato. back in 25 minutes with another update.

in the blood. this is bad for two reasons. one your blood vessels are saturated, batheed in the sugar. your brain, muscles, tissues need the sugar to thrive for energy so they are starved. >> it can cause other damage if you don't manage it. >> cardiovascular disease, n dementia, eye problems, kidney problems, nerve issues. i will show you what it looks like within your body. we'll first look at a blood vessel. let's see this fwragraphic come. all of the blood in the sugar is blue. say you had a bagel for breakfast. it metabolizes to sugar and your pancreas secretes insulin, the superhero, that latches onto the sugar and brings it out as

needed. some are staying within, some are staying out. >> this is in the normal scenario. >> now when you have type 2 diabetes, what's happening here is the fwluk isn't responding to the insulin. insulin is pumping and we are secreting more and more but we are resisting it. a lot of glucose is staying within the blood vessel. you see how much insulin we have as well. there is a lot of inflammation in the body. we have a lot of sugar within the blood vessels but it is not going to the places that need it. >> now we know what the problem is. if you want to do simple swaps that will really fix this, not fix it but make you feel better. >> manage it, right. first, know your numbers. everybody has to know their numbers. you want to hold back on carbohydra carbohydrates. i have super simple things anybody can do. when it comes to a salad, the croutons, that's all refined carbohydrates that spike blood

sugars, but you want crunch. instead put on toasted nuts which are naturally low in carbs and it has healthy fat and fiber and protein. or put on roasted chick peas. gives you the same crunch for less carbohydrates. >> i get that but now you say i can't put ranch dressing on the salad. >> you can but there is a better one. instead of ranch or thousand island or blue cheese, you want to have a dressing with some sort of vinegar in it. it could be balsamic or red wine vinegar or champagne. any vinaigrette made with vinegar. this is cool. vinegar has the ability to slow down the absorption of carbohydrates in the gut. when you have a meal with vinegar there is a chance you will have less of a spike. >> so that's going on offense with vinegar. >> absolutely. >> finally a plate of meat balls. you know the way to my heart.

welcome back. willy caught up with two hollywood legends. they have a new movie together. >> robert redford and nick nolte star in "a walk in the woods." when redford started the project the idea was for him to be joined by paul newman, but his death and other production issues sidelined the project. redford kept it alive and found his partner in nick nolte. >> if you persevere, if you believe in something strongly enough, you keep at it until it happens. >> at what point did you decide nick nolte was the guy? >> pretty early on. i felt with all due respect to paul, a dear friend, nick was better suited for the role. i thought it would be fun to work with him. i can say things about nick he can't say about himself. he's a good actor. he's smart. and completely undisciplined.

>> you mean it as a compliment. >> do i. >> we go? >> we go. >> "a walk in the woods" is the real life story of two estranged friends who embark on a hike along the 2200 mile appalachian trail. >> do you remember the phone call? >> i just sat down with bob and was cast. >> it fell into place without a lot of talk. >> no way that's to scale. >> it says "map to scale." that's it. new plan. >> did robert tell you there would be a lot of hiking in the movie, nick? >> no. i knew there would be that. i knew he was in shape. i thought, that's great. i'm not in shape. probably 50 pounds. >> you were playing hurt coming into this yet you still took on the challenge. >> it was amazing. >> i know he was hurting.

he had a bum hip and a bum knee. we had to do a lot of walking, hiking up and down. what was impressive to is there was never complaining. >> you okay? >> never better! >> if two men are in their 70s trying to walk the appalachian trail they're going to be hurt. >> is it true, robert, i read that you don't like to watch your movies? >> i thought about this not so long ago. maybe it has to do when i was a kid growing up in los angeles it was a rough neighborhood. we were a rowdy bunch. we'd go to movies and make fun of the movies we were watching. we'd talk to the screen. so there would be a romantic scene we'd say, right, lover. i guess i must have seen myself sitting in the audience looking at myself. >> you really should watch. you're very good. i don't know if you have heard. you're quite good.

what do you hope someone who sits and watches this movie for an hour and a half walks out thinking or feeling? what do they take from the theater with them? >> first of all, they don't boo the screen. >> good start. >> they walk away feeling like they have seen something that isn't that available anymore on the screen. >> i hope they walk away feeling, boy, i'm going to go on a hike. >> redford and nolte did most of their own stunts and there were a lot of them. they used the appalachian trail as the set. we'll hear more in the next hour. really fun to watch. i was amazed redford can't watch himself and only recently saw "butch cassidy & the sundance kid" with his grandson. >> what did he think? >> he wasn't impressed actually. >> i like it. >> great movie. >> you're on your own, al. >> benedict cumberbatch was going to do that. >> coming up, delicious and fun.

>> looks like a pancake. >> it's more like a biscuit dough. you'll see what i mean when you eat it. those cook for two minutes and i will brush them with olive oil like this. >> even when it's not done like that? >> yes. these will be flipped to the other side. >> those cook quickly. >> they took in, like, two minutes. >> is this a dessert thing or a s'more breakfast thing? >> both really. when you're camping this is a perfect breakfast. then a little bit of jam, nutella or peanut butter. >> on the fwrgrill? >> you can get it nice and hot. it's all about the gooey factor. >> that looks amazing. >> then we go back and skewer the marshmallow. there is no s'more without a marshmallow. i like the jumbo ones.

you can use rosemary branches. >> instead of skewers? >> yeah. take the jumbo. i will take the little ones. then you go back to the grill and toast them up carefully. that's a hot grill. you can toast it however you like. if you like them toasty. >> do you like yours on fire? >> i kind of do. i'm sure after years of eating charred marshmallows i have no idea about how good it is for you but i think they tyke over. >> this will take a while. >> we don't need to do the whole thing. it should only take a few second and we can assemble them. >> pretend those are grilled. >> now you have your beautifully toasted marshmallow skewer, put it right on the biscuit. >> can we get a verdict? >> it's good. i'm glad my kid is on the school
