batman ride. he is charged with criminal sexual contact and endangering the welfare of a child. now to a developing story from wall street. stocks took another big slide today. the market just closed moments ago. here's a live look at the big board. the dow dropped 468 points. the dow plunged more than 300 points within ten minutes of opening today. as you know, this comes after the markets ended august in the red. in august, the dow posted its worst monthly loss in more than five years. it is hot and steamy outside. here's a live look over the schuykill river boardwalk. the thermometer hit 90 degrees again, making this an official heat wave. you could also see rain out there. >> nbc 10 first alert meteorologist brittney shipp is tracking the heat and the showers. >> it is official, three straight days of temperatures at or above 90 degrees, started

sunday with a high of 91, yesterday 90 degrees. today the hottest of them all, 93. the heat wave number five now official. we were ten degrees above our average today. we are going to stay that way even as we head into wednesday and thursday. expect another hot few days ahead but the good news is i'm tracking cooler weather as we get a little closer to the holiday weekend. temperature-wise, we are at 80 degrees in the poconos, 88 in allentown, 87 degrees in pottstown. still in the low 90s for philadelphia, northeast philly and wilmington. temperatures at the atlantic city airport, 84. we are seeing slightly cooler conditions closer to atlantic city and in cape may but it's still warm conditions throughout the entire area. our radar shot shows a few little isolated showers. the models picked these up earlier in the afternoon and now they have developed here. this is mainly confined to sussex county, so these are moderate downpours coming down to the south of seaford. if i put this in motion it shows most of the showers are moving out of the area, tracking to the south. i will keep a close eye on the

showers and let you know how long the heat about stick around, coming up in the full forecast. 20 minutes of nonstop news continues with the pope announcing a major shift from tradition within the catholic church. pope francis is now allowing priests to grant absolution to women who have abortions. the pontiff says women who have had an abortion can seek forgiveness in the church's upcoming holy year. the change reflects his papacy's central theme of mercy. in the catholic church's upcoming holy year, the pope says if women are contrite and come to confession, priests can absolve them of what the church considers a grave sin. traditionally abortion could lead to excommunication from the church. a delaware woman who had an abortion years ago and sank into a deep depression calls the pope's change of direction a huge help for many women struggling to cope after an abortion. >> that's what's important for women to know, that yes, while

they did do something that was displeasing to god, his forgiveness is available. >> ahead on "nbc 10 news at 6:00" hear from the delaware priest who says while this isn't a change in church policy, it is clear pope francis wants to remind everyone the church is ready to forgive those who are contrite. a funeral director is now in police custody after decaying bodies were found inside his business in west philadelphia. police found three unrefrigerated bodies inside hawkins funeral parlor at 53rd and vine streets yesterday. it's the second time in a week police have made that kind of discovery in philadelphia. nbc 10's lauren mayk is outside the funeral home right now live with new information on the investigation. lauren, what have you found out? >> reporter: this is brand new information. we have just found out minutes ago that philadelphia police have charged the funeral director of this home, blair hawkins. he is facing three counts of abuse of a corpse and police

tell us the funeral director tried to keep an inspector from looking inside. the investigation here at hawkins funeral service in west philadelphia raising questions about what was happening inside. officials telling nbc 10 bodies weren't properly refrigerated. the home's director told us -- >> we don't refrigerate bodies that are being cremated. >> reporter: but there are rules. we asked the president of the philadelphia funeral directors association about them. >> i can tell you not all funeral homes do have refrigeration at their facility. but again, the law states that when someone does pass away, within 24 hours of that person coming into the funeral home, they need to be either refrigerated, okay, or embalmed. >> reporter: another issue here at hawkins funeral service, licensing. the director has one. hawkins funeral service facility does not. does it need to be both? do you have to have both? >> yes. you do. >> reporter: blair hawkins may have a license but it's not

enough. >> i really don't have an answer for someone that's gone through the professional licensing steps that need to be taken to become a licensed funeral director, and then your professionalism is where it is. i have a hard time understanding that. >> reporter: all of this really can make families wonder who they can trust to know for sure that their loved ones are in good hands. we are asking some of those questions for you. coming up at 5:00, i'm going to show you how you can research the funeral homes where you take your loved ones. i'm lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. yesterday's discovery comes nearly a week after three bodies were found decomposing inside a garage. the garage belonged to a funeral home in philadelphia's strawberry mansion neighborhood. records show the funeral homeowner was licensed but her funeral home was not. we just checked. no charges have been filed as this investigation continues. we have new information on a

crash in lakewood, ocean county that injured a mother and her two children last night. today the 1-year-old and 4-year-old remain in critical condition. their mother is in stable. skyforce 10 was above that crash scene. police say the family was crossing river avenue around 10:00 last night when a car slammed into them. the 1-year-old was in a stroller. police are still investigating. no word on whether the driver will be charged. two atlantic county fathers who got into this fight at a youth softball tournament are now sentenced to a year of probation. michael barbella and michael [ inaudible ] pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct. nbc 10 first showed this cell phone video of the fathers fighting in maryland back in july. court documents revealed barbello was angry because his daughter was cut from a softball team. it ended with him on the ground bleeding from his face. six high school football players were sentenced to

probation and community service after a hazing investigation the teens played for sayreville war memorial high school in middlesex county. last fall, police charged seven players with attacking and sexually assaulting younger teammates. they won't have to register as sex offenders. this reignited a sensitive subject with people in the area. >> kids' lives, they made a mistake, they're young. you don't want to see a youth ruin their life forever. >> the seventh player in the case is waiting for trial in family court. a new head coach will restart that football program. a heaven or hell decision. that's how a county clerk in kentucky describes issuing marriage licenses to gay couples. now she heads to court for saying she won't defy god. >> why are you not issuing marriage licenses today? >> because i'm not. >> why? under whose authority?

>> under god's authority. >> that's kim davis refusing to issue a marriage license to same sex couple outside lexington today. it's the fifth time she's denied a license to david moore and david irmole. she has been refusing to issue the licenses even though the u.s. supreme court ruled it is legal. she has been called to appear in court thursday morning and could face fines or jail time. tonight, a private catholic school on the main line will give parents a chance to weigh in on the firing of a gay teacher. earlier this month we told you waldrin mercy academy sent parents a letter offering them the chance to talk about the firing of margie winters after someone protested her marriage to a woman. the school had known about the marriage for years. two lawmakers announced their support for the iran nuclear deal. that puts president obama on the cusp of clinching the necessary senate votes to keep the contested agreement alive. >> having this agreement in

francis with the nbc 10 news app. you can find train routes, road closures and the pontiff's itinerary. a federal panel wants airlines and hotels to come clean about those hidden fees. the advisory committee for aviation consumer protection is hearing from passengers and customers today in washington. the panel says airlines should disclose how much it costs to chai change or cancel a flight. they say customers deserve to know about mandatory resort or other fees before booking a room, not after. a recall to tell you about involving frozen cut corn sold in bags for different labels including wildwood, market basket, bountiful harvest. it could be contaminated with listeria. there are no reports of anyone becoming sick. the recall involves 14 states including new jersey and pennsylvania. if you have this product, throw

it out. a campaign to encourage fire safety in philadelphia seems to be working. that's according to the philadelphia fire department. nbc 10 at the free library. members of the fire department, the american red cross and peco were there to update the progress of the program. so far this year there have been ten deaths associated with fires. compare that to 22 last year. >> fire is a beatable enemy. fire does not have to take any lives in our community. >> after the update, 2,000 smoke alarms were installed in city neighborhoods for free. a virginia news photographer murdered on live television was laid to rest today. funeral services for 27-year-old adam ward were held in roanoke this morning. more than 500 people were there. ward's brother and sister spoke on behalf of their parents at the ceremony. his burial was held privately. yesterday, friends and family comforted each other at the memorial service for ward at salem high school. his family encouraged people to

wear the colors of salem high or ward's college, virginia tech. his high school football team came to pay respects to the avid sports fan. ward and reporter alison parker were gunned down by a former co-worker. vicki gardner was wounded in the attack. police say the shooter, vester lee flanagan, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. a public viewing has just begun for former sixers great darryl dawkins. dawkins' family is hosting it at st. paul's evangelical church until 8:00 tonight. he died of a heart attack last week at 58 years old. the starters won't play. we received that update today from head coach chip kelly about the eagles' final preseason game on nbc 10 this thursday night. chip says it will still be a big game for the guys fighting for roster spots. >> almost every position, there are still decisions that have to be made toward the bottom end of the roster. there's not one that's more important.

degrees above our average. this is now heat wave number five of the season. just taking a quick look back at the month of august and now september 1st, it hasn't been too bad. we haven't seen that many days with temperatures above 90 so we have seen more days with temperatures in the 80s versus the 90s. i know it feels really hot. we have a few more days left but we will get through this and then temperatures will drop down as we head into the end of the work week. right now from philadelphia, 93 degrees, the air is calm, humidity at 32%. feels-like temperature in the low 90s as well. we did see a few more clouds move into the philadelphia area. hot and muggy for the rest of the region. our temperatures are at 91 degrees in philadelphia, 90 degrees in washington township, 89 degrees in trenton. temperatures in the low 80s for the poconos. close to 90 in allentown, same thing in reading. 86 degrees currently in oxford. we are seeing slightly cooler temperatures especially closer to the shore. only 79 in beach haven. about ten degrees warmer than that in woodbine, at 89 degrees.

the temperature in millville at 88. so our 24-hour temperature change map shows we are up about five degrees in philadelphia from this time yesterday, six degrees in wilmington. we are actually cooler with a little air coming off the ocean. at the atlantic city airport we are down four degrees. an isolated thunderstorm on the radar, mainly in the southern part of delaware. so all of these showers are actually tracking to the south. so they're moving out of our area. but you may notice in the last five minutes or so we have seen a popup thunderstorm develop right in the part of town that if i zoom out the radar, i want to give you an idea, this is really extremely isolated. it's only in that particular part of town that we are dealing with any type of isolated thunderstorms. a closer look at the future cast shows that we are going to stay nice and dry heading into tomorrow with the exception right around 2:00 p.m., we will see another chance of these isolated showers developing

here, closer to cape may, dover and also stretching down once again into sussex county. you will notice again, very isolated. so this isn't widespread rainfall that we're tracking. the same thing is going to happen on thursday right around 1:00 p.m. isolated showers, then things really get organized as we push into friday. we will see a cold front moving in from the east and that's going to give us a good chance to see showers, light rainfall and even a chance of isolated thunderstorms as we push into friday. your highs around the region, 93 degrees for philadelphia, 91 in wilmington. staying a bit cooler along the shore. if we take a look at what you can expect down the shore as we head closer to your labor day forecast, just a reminder we are dealing with a few showers on friday but temperatures stay nice and comfortable. take a look at saturday, sunday and labor day, staying in the low 80s. as we head into the rest of tonight, warm and humid conditions. we drop down to 73 for philadelphia, 64 for the suburbs north and west. another hot, humid day on tap for us tomorrow. ranging between 91 and 94. the seven-day forecast shows

days and almost exactly 17 hours. as the city prepares for the pope's visit, a lot of people are looking for places to stay in philadelphia and the suburbs. >> the nbc 10 investigators discovered some people may be trying to take advantage of those visitors. investigative reporter harry hairston has been online reviewing ads for lodging. what did you find? >> reporter: we found clever, crafty, convincing ads for place to stay during the pope's visit. but not all of them are legit. meet angela. at least that's the name she gave us. we met her after answering her online ad for a hotel room during the papal visit. she wasn't expecting the nbc 10 investigators. more aangela's ad later. she's not the only one posting places to stay when the pope's in pennsylvania. they aren't hard to find. we took to the web. within moments, several ads caught our eye. >> didn't know that. >> reporter: we pointed this one out to neighbors in huntington

valley. a five bedroom house for $1500 during the pope's visit. but there's one problem. >> that's a fake ad. >> i had no idea. >> reporter: the home is not for rent but it is for sale. here's the foreclosed property on a realtor's site. someone grabbed the picture and used it on this pope rental ad. >> unbelievable. what people will do nowadays. >> reporter: then there's this one. a three bedroom house for $2500. the pictures of the exterior and interior look nice. the man who placed the ad wanted a $500 deposit. we reached out and he agreed to show us the house. but then canceled. texting that it was already rented. when we called to ask him about it, he insisted on recording our conversation. so did we. >> thank you very much. we would like to talk to you about the property you're renting out, the location? okay. he hung up. >> reporter: we came here to the address on the ad and found

this. a completely different looking house. nothing resembling this picture. we searched the photo online and found the house is here in northern liberties. >> it's a photograph of this house certainly. >> reporter: margot is the real estate agent selling the home. the property is not for rent during the pope's visit. she says the photos were taken from ads she placed. >> it's an illusion. the people who are trying to scam consumers are doing whatever they can to create the illusion of a legitimate ad. >> reporter: the phony ad was taken down once the nbc 10 investigators exposed it. next stop, the quality inn near the airport. the manager of the hotel had no idea what we were about to show him. the nbc 10 investigators found this ad promising to re-rent one of his rooms. the ad says there's a room available for one night during the pope's visit, and promises to put the room in your name for

$400 cash. that's more than $200 over the rate the hotel is charging during that time. the deal also includes free septa passes. do you allow them to do anything like this? >> no. never. never. we would never allow anyone to do that. >> reporter: that brings us back to angela. through e-mail she agreed to meet us at the quality inn. but before meeting, she asked quote, by the way, are you a cop? we responded no and asked why she wanted to know. she wrote i'm only asking to avoid any unnecessary business. and just moments after meeting our producer at the hotel, it was time for the nbc 10 investigators to bring out the cameras. you know it's against the hotel policy in order -- >> i don't know what you're referring to. >> reporter: you were just talking to my producer inside. >> okay. i have a paper right here. >> reporter: now you don't remember? >> i don't know what you're referring to. >> reporter: she jumps in a waiting car and they drive away.

after meeting the nbc 10 investigators, the ad has been removed. the experts say work directly with a hotel or real estate agent if you are looking for a room or house to rent. if you discover you have been taken advantage of, you should contact law enforcement. harry hairston, nbc 10 news. after his dog fighting ring conviction, michael vick has been at the center of controversy. now protesters are coming out again against the nfl quarterback. less than a week after signing with the steelers, the convicted dog fighter is the target of animal activists. several groups are planning a candlelight vigil thursday outside heinz field prior to the steelers preseason finale in pittsburgh. it's not the first time this has happened to vick. dozens turned out outside the linc in 2009 after the eagles signed vick fresh off his 18 month prison sentence for helping run a dog fighting ring. in massachusetts, a man who pushed a female student off of a

roof at a party near bridgewater state university was in court today. this is cell phone video of the incident. the 20-year-old woman was dancing on the roof of a detached garage. the man climbed on to the roof, too, and threw her off. fortunately, partiers below broke her fall. she fell nearly ten feet. she's got bruises but wasn't seriously hurt. meanwhile, the man who pushed her is charged with assault and battery. new research shows your waistline could impact your brain. >> the new report linking obesity and your memory. plus, kids and calories. the new push to change what children eat at restaurants. and the new effort to keep kids safer on the road. the car seat rule change that will impact parents in new jersey.

increase hepatitis screening. the new program will launch next month. it will eventually cause liver scarring, cancer or total liver failure. marijuana use appears to be on the rise among college students. researchers from the university of michigan found marijuana use has reached its highest point since 1980. nearly 6% of college students reported using pot nearly every day. loosened marijuana policies in some states have likely contributed to the increase in use. here's one more reason to watch your waistline. researchers now say your weight when you are middle-aged can influence if you get alzheimer's disease and when. alzheimer's onset has long been linked with midlife obesity but new research shows more midlife pounds could mean an earlier onset of the disease. right now, about five million people in the united states are living with alzheimer's. that number is expected to more than double by 2050 barring any medical breakthroughs.

you know this. when you take your kids out to eat, mac and cheese and chicken fingers on the top of the list. but a new proposal could help improve the nutritional value of restaurant meals for kids. the bill is being considered by the new york city council requiring kids' meals to include a serving of fruits, vegetables or whole grain. they would also have to be fewer m than 500 calories. 98% of kids' meals do not meet this criteria now. to a controversial move to include gender neutral bathrooms in schools. the superintendent in troy, ohio has ordered every school in the district to designate a gender neutral bathroom for gay and trans-gender students. trans-gender students can also use restrooms that match their gender identity. the superintendent says every single student regardless of their gender identity must be protected. some parents are outraged, saying their next step is challenging this decision. new york city taxis are

legislative turnaround. >> reporter: for 1-year-old adaline, new jersey's new child safety law may cause hiccups and tears. she just hit new jersey's old benchmark for turning her car seat around. starting today, all children 2 years and younger and less than 30 pounds must remain buckled in a rear-facing car seat until they hit both milestones. parents rely on mt. laurel's car star and certified child passenger safety technician dave thompson to make sure they get the seats and belts in the proper position. >> it only takes a split second. you're texting, you're talking, you're drinking, anything, and you look down, you look up and it's just too late. >> reporter: thompson says even if a child's legs dangle or their feet hit the back seat -- >> having their legs up on the back of the seat is not a safety issue. >> reporter: he says new jersey's law among the toughest nationwide will save lives and prevent toddler injury.

>> they are going backwards and not having the stretch of the spinal cord. >> reporter: children 2 to 4 years old and up to 40 pounds must still be in the back seat buckled with a five point harness. it is best practice for older children to be buckled in the back seat until age 12. under the old law, child seat belt violators could only be fined $10 to $25. now it will hit harder in the pocketbook. the fines could go up to $75. it applies to all drivers, not just new jersey residents. >> we cross the bridge, heading down to the shore, got to have that child rear facing. >> i think it means i will have to invest in one of those mirrors that i can see her and keep her happy. >> reporter: happy and safe even if it means voicing her opinion. cydney long, nbc 10 news. >> that baby is not happy. there is a new standard for n new york city's iconic taxicab.

the taxi of tomorrow was unveiled today. the "new york times" says it will be phased in as owners retire their cabs. the mini van features a sunroof and how about this, cell phone charging outlets. i love that. ta taxi officials predict 80% of the city's cabs will eventually be this nissan 200. temperatures are going to stay well above average as we wind down your work week so about ten degrees above average over the next couple days, plus the humidity's going to stick around for us. i am tracking the return of storms as we push into friday, then what's in store as we head towards the holiday weekend. our average again is 83. this heat wave officially, heat wave is official today starting with temperatures in the 90s all the way on sunday. yesterday, same thing at 90 degrees. today we saw official high at the airport of 93. wednesday and thursday, we expect to see similar conditions

so just keep that in mind as you make your plans. across the rest of the region, for the poconos, a mix of sun and clouds, 80 degrees. much warmer in the city. temperatures about 13 degrees warmer in philadelphia right now at 93. closer to the shore, that's where folks are getting some relief. only 82 degrees. a beautiful day down the shore. and also, temperatures, water temperatures are close to the low 70s. nice and comfortable there but everywhere else, hot and muggy for the most part, especially wilmington stretching up through philadelphia, northeast philly, all those temperatures in the 90s. same thing in washington township. 88 degrees in horsham. 87 in chester springs. we're in the low 80s for mt. pocono, 88 degrees in allentown. 88 currently in reading. closer to south jersey, woodbine still warm but atlantic city at the airport, only 84 degrees. beach haven, right around 81. that's the cooler spot on the map. we are still warm and muggy in dover with temperatures at 89. if i widen the picture here, i will show you it's not just us but stretching all the way back

to cincinnati and sait. louis. des moines, 90 degrees. 89 in charleston. also atlanta in the mid 80s. we are also dealing with a few isolated thunderstorms. this is mainly in the southern part of sussex county. if i put it in motion, you will notice how the thunderstorms are right over delmarva but tracking to the south so that's good news. they are heading out of our area right now. this is extremely isolated. i will show you our entire area, then exactly where these thunderstorms are. you will notice mainly dry with the exception of the southern part of sussex county. that's the only place we are dealing with any isolated thunderstorms. as far as the rest of the night is concerned, we will stay nice and dry, dry start heading into wednesday, but again, we will be dealing with a few of these isolated thunderstorms once again. we will be seeing our air coming off the ocean there and that will collide with some of the warmer, moist air that we already have over the region. that's where we will get another round of stray showers as we head into tomorrow. as we push into thursday, same thing again.

we'll have another slight chance of showers and then friday is when we will see more organized widespread rainfall with a better chance of thunderstorms. that's going to be closer to 11:00 a.m. you will also notice the temperatures will start to drop back down as we head into friday. that will set us up for a more comfortable weekend. highs around the region tomorrow in the low 90s once again. 90 degrees in pottstown. your labor day weekend shows dry conditions saturday, sunday and monday. from philadelphia to the poconos and to the shore. our shore communities will see temperatures closer to the low 80s. tonight down to 73. tomorrow, another repeat of today, in the 90s. the heat wave will continue. seven-day forecast, the heat wave continues another two days and dropping down to the 80s by friday. hundreds of thousands of people have their eyes to the sky tomorrow at the jersey shore. >> the atlantic city air show is back. one group will make a big return after a break from the show. a live report next as pilots prepare for their moment in the spotlight. all new on "nbc 10 news at 5:00" mcdonald's menu change.
