>> once a wrestling superstar, tonight an accused killer. authorities are charging jimmy super fly snooka with murdering his girlfriend more than three decades ago. let's get to nbc 10's doug shimell live in allentown where the charm charges were announced. >> reporter: we are told snooka is likely home in camden county. the d.a wanted him released, set the bail low enough so he could be released so taxpayers would not have to pay for his medical care while in jail for his terminal cancer. months before nancy argentino's death in 1983, star wrestler jimmy super fly snooka was accused of assaulting her. >> in that case it was alleged mr. snooka had been seen dragging ms. argentino by her hair down a hall. according to testimony, it took several sheriff's deputies to get mr. snooka under control. >> reporter: four months later, argentino died after being found

unconscious in a lehigh valley motel. now 32 years later, a lehigh county grand jury has filed murder and manslaughter charges against the former pro wrestler. >> repeatedly assaulting nancy argentino on may 10, 1983, then allowed her to lie in their bed at the george washington motor lodge without obtaining the necessary medical attention. >> reporter: prosecutors and grand juries say it was snooka's conflicting and callous accounts of what happened that night that resulted in the charges. >> she hit her head on the concrete but while she initially lost consciousness, she came to and he went back to sleep. >> reporter: according to witnesses, jimmy snooka was here at the lehigh county jail just long enough to be fingerprinted. they said he looked very frail and left in a wheelchair. a preliminary hearing is to be set. live in allentown, i'm doug shimell, nbc 10 news.

the pope is set to arrive in philadelphia in just more than three weeks from now, but it's papal news out of new york in the spotlight today. the pope will greet guests in central park later this month. that's the word from manhattan. francis will travel through part of the park on september 25th, the day before his arrival in our area. there is concern the pope's central park appearance could steal some thunder from philadelphia. nbc 10's rosemary connors posed that question to local leaders today. what did they say? >> reporter: they are not really surprised because this is what the pope does. not to mention that for that procession through central park, new yorkers will have to enter a lottery online to get tickets and that sets philadelphia apart in terms of access to the holy father during this historic event. >> this is pope francis. it was always envisioned he would want to get out among the people. >> reporter: after all, he is considered the people's pope and organizers with the world

meeting of families are not worried that his public procession through central park will diminish the unique and special circumstances of his visit here. don't forget, philadelphia is the only city where francis' followers can see him at length out in the open without tickets. >> and celebrate two huge events with him on the ben franklin parkway. the festival of families saturday night and then the mass sunday afternoon at 4:00. >> if anything, it might reduce some of the crush of people that are coming here. somebody who could see him in new york then might not come down here. >> i think he wants to maximize his visit and i think that really does that. and it helps more people meet and greet and see him and just opens opportunities for people. >> reporter: emily woods and her co-worker corey bradwell don't see this as new york stealing philly's thunder. >> things are happening in the city. it's a really good time. i'm excited about it. >> there's plenty of pope and plenty of people to go around.

of that was good news. i'm sure the kids probably are not that excited to get back to school. and the summer weather will be continuing as we go through the rest of the week. you are really not wanting to let go of it after you see the labor day weekend forecast. we have officially hit our fifth heat wave of the summer season. temperatures did get into the 90s. it started sunday, 91 degrees yesterday, so far today, 93. we have had a lot of hot days so far this summer. wednesday and thursday, we expect to stay in the 90s. the heat will continue. take a look at most of the country. we are talking about the central plains to the eastern seaboard, temperatures here well above normal, the upper 80s to low to mid 90s and locally, we are still in the mid 90s. we have actually hit 94 degrees. so that temperature just updated. lehigh valley, still near 90. 91, northeast philly. 92 in wilmington. 84 in atlantic city. a little bit cooler as you get

closer to the shore which is probably where most people are going to be heading this labor day weekend. really, no matter where you're going, it will be pretty nice weather. most of the area now is dry but now we are looking at sussex county, some rain moving away from sussex county. there is a very thin line of showers moving up through washington township across 95. some of this rain may not be hitting the ground but this is all part of the sea breeze that moved in from the shore today in part thanks to our very warm temperatures. the rest of the evening, temperatures will stay hot. by 6:00, around 90 degrees. by 8:00, mid 80s, warm and humid. the heat continues but there is some rain in the forecast and the labor day weekend forecast, no matter where you're heading, that's coming up. a rough ride on wall street despite the cheering you hear. after plunging more than 300 points within the first ten minutes of opening, the dow never recovered. closing the day down 470 points.

this after a brutal showing in august which saw the dow's worst monthly closing in more than five years. following developing news out of illinois. there is a man hunt urpd wnder for three people who shot and killed a police officer this morning in fox lake, about an hour north of chicago. the officer was chasing the men when he lost communication with dispatchers. a backup officer arrived at the scene and discovered his colleague had been shot. he died a short time later. the officer's gun is missing. a virginia news photographer murdered on live television was laid to rest today. funeral services for 27-year-old adam ward were held in roanoke this morning. more than five 500 people were . his burial was held privately. ward and reporter alison parker were gunned down by a former co-worker. vicki gardner was wounded in the attack. police say the shooter vester lee flanagan died of a

self-inflicted gunshot wound. turning now to the budget battle in pennsylvania. governor wolf is shifting his strategy as the budget stalemate stretches into a third month. wolf's spokesman says he's holding meetings with top lawmakers in small groups, hoping the smaller meetings will lead to more progress. wolf vetoed the republican majority's $30 billion budget in june. republicans say wolf's budget plan would require the biggest tax increase in pennsylvania history. summer is officially over for students at a charter school in the grays ferry section. nearly 500 students returned to class today. there they are. the children in grades 1 through 5 were welcomed back by teachers, parents, community leaders, kindergarten will begin after the labor day holiday. in chester county, a man

suspected of vandalizing buses at a middle school is under arrest. 22-year-old matthew schnell is accused of damaging seat covers. he was found walking between the parked school buses. police tell us they found several seat covers inside his c car. a 15-year-old boy was shot in the head last night. police are looking for the person who pulled the trigger. it happened around 8:30 in no h northampton county. police are looking into whether the teen was ambushed. he is being treated at a hospital. new video in to nbc 10 of a man wanted for robbing a northeast philadelphia wawa. it happened august 23rd on cottman avenue. the suspect, wearing an eagles cap, walks over to the cashier, pulls out a gun and demands money. he made off with $150. the cashier wasn't hurt. how about this story. a lower township man dug up a cannon ball in his backyard.

another hot day, a little hotter than yesterday. we're in the 90s. that means we hit the fifth heat wave of the season. officially we are in another heat wave. we do have rain chances coming in the forecast before the weekend so the timing is good. that will at least help lower the humidity over your labor day weekend. i have that forecast for you in just a second. as far as the heat is concerned from august 1st to today, september 1st, we have had about 13 days with temperatures above 90 degrees. now, aside from that, it has certainly been a very hot month. the last i guess you could say unofficial month of summer if you want to count this weekend being the unofficial end but we are continuing to look at the heat for the rest of the week in the forecast. 94 degrees now in philadelphia, humidity is still pretty comfortable but as we end out the week, the humidity will stay up. you will notice more of a drop into the weekend. right now, 94 in philadelphia.

85 in pottstown. 89 allentown. 87 millville. 92 in wilmington. so it is still hot across the area and we are looking at dry conditions. now, the only area really dealing with any rain today, that's sussex county. we are seeing that shower move out of laurel, even though there's a little bit of light rain left over, and also a sea breeze has moved onshore. you can see that by the greens and yellows approaching philadelphia. this is not a lot of rain at all. some of this may be hitting the ground but it's quickly moving in from the shore and that is in part due to the hot temperatures today. that's pretty typical for a summer afternoon to see that sea breeze coming in. big area of high pressure still off to the southwest. this will be keeping us dry as we go through the rest of the week except friday, that's the next chance of rain. this lwill be responsible for keeping us hot. we are hot outside right now and will stay hot. still seeing a mostly dry day tomorrow. by the afternoon hours will be our hottest time of day. even into thursday, the heat

sticks around but now watch what happens as we go into friday. some more shares move into the forecast. friday will be our next chance of rain but the timing's good. then it clears out just in time for the labor day weekend. if you are heading to the shore or delaware beaches friday, you could see a shower around. temperatures in the low 80s. otherwise, the weekend looks fantastic. saturday and sunday, temperatures around 80 degrees at the shore, more of an onshore wind, sunny skies and the labor day monday, low 80s. water temperature now at about the low 70s. for the rest of the area for the labor day weekend, philadelphia area, expect sunny skies, temperatures around 87 degrees. for most of the weekend, closer to 90 for monday. for the poconos, around 80 degrees. same thing along the shore there. so we are going to be looking at a great labor day weekend for you with lower humidity. that will feel a lot more comfortable. tonight, we stay warm and humid. 73 for the low in philadelphia. 64, north and west. then tomorrow, hot and humid. temperatures in the mid to low 90s. but we do stay sunny so it will

new information tonight from west philadelphia. a funeral director is now in police custody after several decaying bodies were found inside hawkins funeral parlor yesterday. >> they announced the arrest of blair hawkins today and released his mug shot late this afternoon. nbc 10's lauren mayk is live outside the funeral home with the charges he's facing. >> reporter: abuse of a corpse. that is the charge blair hawkins is facing. three counts of that. a funeral home, whether it's this one or another one, is somewhere where you go to say

final good-byes to a loved one. we wanted to know how do you know who to trust. the door is locked here at hawkins funeral services. its director, blair hawkins, now facing charges. it's the second home in a week where discoveries of decomposing bodies shocked the community. >> i myself am appalled. we try to put our best foot forward and ever once in awhile, especially in our profession, something like this comes up that puts a bad light on ourselves. >> reporter: david peak is president of the funeral directors association. how do you know you're choosing a reputable place that will do things the right way? >> a lot of times families do choose funeral homes they have used before so there is that buildup of trust. >> reporter: this industry is regulated by the state. we found you can look up licenses on the state data base through pennsylvania's department of state website. even see if there has been

disciplinary action. when we look up blair hawkins, the funeral director from hawkins funeral services, it lists him as licensed. but the funeral home itself, that isn't. does it need to be both? do you have to have both? >> yes, you do. >> reporter: he tells me you will often see the licenses hanging on the wall in the office and if you don't see them, you can certainly ask for them. take note also, of the expiration to make sure everything is up to date. i'm lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. yesterday's discovery comes nearly a week after three bodies were found decomposing inside a garage. that garage belonged to a funeral home in philadelphia's strawberry mansion neighborhood. records show the funeral homeowner was licensed but her funeral home was not. she is not facing charges at this time. we are getting our first look at the driver who killed a 2-year-old boy in a hit and run. 22-year-old miguel colon turned

himself in at police headquarters in philadelphia yesterday. the hit and run happened back in april. an arrest warrant was issued for colon last week. he was accused of injuring a 19-year-old woman and killing her 2-year-old son, seen here. police say he hit them while driving in west kensington and fled the scene. colon is facing several charges including homicide by vehicle and involuntary manslaughter. a showdown inside a kentucky courthouse. a county clerk maintained her stance against gay marriage this morning, refusing to issue a license to two gay couples. this just a day after the supreme court dismissed her appeal based on her religious beliefs. nbc's jay gray has the story. >> reporter: the supreme court has said yes but this morning, the county clerk in kentucky again said no. >> we are not issuing them today. >> based on what? why are you not issuing marriage licenses today? >> because i'm not. >> why? >> under whose authority? >> under god's authority.

>> clerk kim davis refused to issue a marriage license to same sex couples or any couple, for that matter, since the supreme court legalized gay marriage in june. citing her beliefs as a christian, she filed suit in federal court but a district judge ruled against her. so did the sixth court of appeals. yesterday, the supreme court rejected her argument without comment. still, this morning, davis again denied a license to two same sex couples. >> you can call the police if you want. you can call the police. >> i pay your salary. i pay your salary. you are discriminating against me right now. >> reporter: as the back and forth continued -- rnlg >> call the police. >> reporter: davis retreated to her office. >> they have the right to believe what they believe. now, we believe what we believe with a very strong conviction. we're not going to back down either. >> reporter: davis has been

is still going to be warm. it will also be humid. but it's hot outside right now. we are officially now in a heat wave. temperatures are in the 90s through parts of the area. philadelphia coming in at 94 degrees right now. in wilmington, it's 92. 91 northeast philly. 87 degrees, washington township. lehigh valley still close to 90 with upper 80s, 89 for allentown, 88 in reading, 86 in doylestown and closer to the shore, it is a little bit cooler with temperatures in the low 80s in beach haven, 86 degrees in woodbine, 86 in dover. again, we are in a heat wave and we will actually stay in a heat wave. today officially makes heat wave number five. tomorrow and even thursday we will be staying in the heat wave with temperatures in the 90s. a chance of rain before the weekend gets here will help to at least bring the temperatures down a little bit. radar, nice and dry through most of the area. we were watching one thunderstorm in sussex county but that's moving out. now you see this little thin green line moving through washington township closer to

it's the second time in a week police have made that kind of discovery in a city. pope francis will make a new stop in new york before coming to philadelphia. today, we found out he will greet thousands of guests in an historic procession through central park. also for the first time ever, the world meeting of families here in philadelphia will feature an international mayors forum. it will debut later this month. we have video of a disturbing hit and run out of new york. you can see a woman in an orange shirt get hit as the car backs up. the man then gets out, takes a look at the victim, appears to talk on his cell phone and then drives right off. it happened last month in the bronx. police are still looking for the driver of that car. the eye in the sky doesn't lie. speed cameras may be controversial, even banned in some states, but a new study says they do save lives. >> reporter: you may not see them but you can bet they can see you.

those speed cameras popping up in communities have sparked controversy but a study conducted by the insurance foundq@q@q@qáç they save lives. >> you can bring down the speeds. you can reduce the number of injuries and deaths. >> reporter: an reduction in driver speed and crashes, the iihs says is impressive. >> we saw a 59% reduction of people exceeding the speed limit by áen miles an hour. >> reporter: in montgomery county just outside washington cameras are used in school zones and residential streets with speed limits of 35 miles per hour or less. the overall effect we are seeing from the montgomery program is about a 39% reduction in fatal andó+ incapacitating injury crashes. camera based speed enforcement is used in 140 jurisdictions around the country. the iihs study suggests more than 21,000 fatalities or serious injuries could have been prevented nationwide in 2013. more than a dozen states

well, we are officially in a heat wave now. temperatures hit the mid 90s today. t i5 p+e of the season and thisl continue as we go through the rest of the week. our next rain chance comes back as we end out the week and we are talking about your labor day weekend forecast so if you are heading to the shore, the poconos it looks pretty good. live look at cape may, beautiful weather for the shore today. if you are along the shore right now watching, well, it's in the low 80s there. this is where you really go to get relief on a day like this. 80 in cape may, feels more like 86 degrees with the humidity but sunny skies are certainly staying in the forecast for the rest of the evening along the shore. now, as far as our temperatures are concerned, the summer heat since the 4th of july, we have only had one day with temperatures in the 70s and about 35 with temperatures in the 80s. 23 days with temperatures in the 90s. it is no surprise that we are in our fifth heat wave of the

season. that will continue as we end out the week, too. big area of high pressure across the eastern half of the country. this is what's keeping us hot and dry. look at the 90s and 80s back to the west. that's going to stick around through the next several days. temperatures locally are in the mid 90s philadelphia. 85 pottstown. 89 degrees in allentown. 88 in reading. much of south jersey and delaware coming in at about the mid to upper 80s. 92 degrees in wilmington right now. we are dry on radar. the rain in sussex county we saw earlier was pretty heavy at times. that's lightening up and starting to move out. we are also watching this sea breeze front. not every day we see this but with a typical sea breeze on a hot, humid day you tend to get this very thin line of green on a dry day. that's really what shows you that sea breeze really trying to push onshore. so shore areas are the coolest spots right now. it will stay hot. here's future weather, hot and dry into your wednesday afternoon. expect mostly dry conditions still and the heat wave

continues as we go into thursday. hot temperatures staying in the 90s. definitely feeling like summer. friday will be our next chance for any showers around. maybe some thunderstorms, too. i don't think it will be a complete washout. that's going to be our next day with rain in the forecast. now, what it's going to do with the rain moving through on friday, that will lower our humidity for the weekend. so the timing's actually pretty good. saturday and sunday, if you are around the philadelphia area for labor day weekend, temperatures in the upper 80s but lower humidity. labor day monday looks good, closer to n90. at the poconos and the shore, sunny skies with temperatures around 80 degrees. 73 for the low tonight, 63 areas north and west. tomorrow, hot, humid, temperatures the mid to low 90s. mostly sunny and dry. for thursday, we stay in the 90s. friday is our next chance for thunderstorms. near 90 degrees. saturday looks good. sunday looks good. labor day monday looks good.

more than half a million people are expected to watch the atlantic city air show tomorrow. today, pilots geared up for the big day with a practice run ago the jersey shore. special this year, the return of the blue angels. the elite navy group who hasn't flown in this show in nearly a decade. the air show won't be the only thing making noise in atlantic city this weekend. >> not at all. a.c. is getting set to host the miss america pageant. nbc 10's drew smith is live in atlantic city. >> i see the crowd building behind you. what's going on? >> reporter: well, all of the contestants are introducing themselves to people here in atlantic city. you can see them up on the stage. this is the third miss america

paneling ept ho pageant since it left vegas and returned to its root at the jersey shore. the city hopes resorts and businesses will be busy, too. the contestants have arrived in atlantic city along with a pack of state and local leaders. >> welcome to atlantic city. >> reporter: the organization's ceo says he fought hard to bring the competition back in 2013. >> we are proud to be part of this great place and it's part of our history, part of our roots. >> reporter: the rollout is similar to what organizers did last year but the situation here is different. then, several casinos were in the process of shutting their doors. now, there's a feeling that things have stabilized. >> we don't notice what others are complaining about because we only want to help. we want to be a part of atlantic city. we want to generate a lot of interest in miss america, to generate a lot of interest in atlantic city. >> reporter: the city says the pageant brings $30 million and

catholics respond to the pope's announcement about abortion. good evening. i'm jacqueline london. an intruder opened a child's bedroom window. a mom caught him in the act. late this afternoon, an arrest in the case. we first told you about this story in gloucester county friday night at 6:00. nbc 10's george spencer joins us live from washington township with how police tracked down the suspect and police didn't have to go too far. >> reporter: they did not. that suspect lives in this same apartment complex. his listed address is in this building. that young geirl and her family live steps away in a building on the other side of that one. take a look at this sketch. since friday night, it is a sketch that police and neighbors have been circulating around the complex and today investigators zeroed in on 27-year-old gregory scott. they believe that scott is the man who pushed open a 6-year-old girl's window late on wednesday
