nbc 10 news starts now. >> and right now, at 11:00 a.m., gushing water leads to a gaping hole in the middle of a northeast philadelphia street. and it's not the first time residents there have had to deal with this recently. i'm chris cato. that sinkhole formed more than six hours a egg ago. a water break created that sinkhole on chalfont drive in northeast, philadelphia. monique, what's the situation there? >> we've been watching the philadelphia water department work on this break for about three hours now. they tell us that the break

they tell us that the break occurred just before sunrise. >> a little shocked. it was kind of surprising to be woken up by the police at 5:00 a.m. >> reporter: rosa captured this river of rushing water on her cell phone. >> they were telling us to move our cars. they were afraid the street was buckling. >> reporter: when the start was buckling, she started filling pitchers with water. 50 homes are affected and without water. joe says this is the second break in one month. just yesterday, the pavement above the first break was sealed. his house is a stone's throw away from both breaks. >> it's been one thing after the other lately. >> reporter: how are you keeping with this? >> i went and bought some water. >> it's really tough when you have no water. have to get a shower somewhere. you can't wash your hands. you can't do anything.

>> reporter: folks working with the water department tell us it could take longer than expected to repair this eight-inch main. working on that for you for 11:30. monique braxton. jay z has done it again. for the fourth year in a row, some of the biggest names in music will perform on the ben franklin parkway. made in america has become a labor day tradition. this is the fourth year for the extravaganza. and we a look at what's happening and the lineup. jesse? >> reporter: chris, they just finished testing the sound system of these massive speakers on the steps of the philadelphia museum of art. they are bringing in equipment. they just turned off the music. they were piping in music. robert plant, actually. they just turned that off. if you pan left, you see all of

the activity on akins oval. this is all blocked off. getting around this area is going to test your patience. the oval, the parkway, the cross streets, are closed until this pulls out on monday. the made in america is tomorrow, with the performers taking the stage at 2:00. this stretches down to 21st street. they expanded it by one block. 50,000 people last year. expecting 70,000 this year. made in america festival has become synonymous with labor day in the phl. police may use this crowd event for a rest run of unspecified security equipment testing. for the pope's visit later. concerns about the weather, last year there was a storm that blew in late in the afternoon. and it forced people to evacuate for a short time. no specific plans for that.

philadelphia. as the temperature climbs and the clouds move in, we're likely to see scattered showers and thunderstorms. and that will hold temperatures back. doylestown is 82, 83. 87 at philadelphia international. and those folks at the shore are seeing temperatures in the low 80s. a nice breeze is blowing. that's going to keep the temperatures in the 80s. right through the weekend. the wind will be blowing on saturday. i have 80 degrees. mostly sunny skies for sunday. less windy at the shore on sunday. and for labor day, monday. it's up to 82 degrees. and it's looking nice inland, as well. your neighborhood-by-neighborhood forecast when i come back later this half hour. chris? 11:05. millions are about to hit the road for the long holiday weekend. and aaa atlantic says this is the good day to do that. off to the delaware beaches, the jersey shore, some other

destination, gas prices are at a ten-year low. on average, a dollar per gallon cheaper than this time last year. you'll have a few extra dollars in your pocket when you get to where you're going. aaa says the later-than-usual labor day has psyched some people out. they're back in that back-to-school mind swrn set. but they say don't let that ruin the holiday. >> some of the best beaches. a great opportunity to take one last road trip this summer. >> the average price of gas is expected to drop as low as $2.44 a gallon this weekend. that would be the lowest since 2004. preparing for the pope. learning more about how you may be able to see pope francis when he visits philadelphia in 22 days. organizers announced 25,000 more free tickets will be made available. and there will be two more papal parades. the first will be saturday,

september 26th, through center city. this shows the route pope francis will take. he will travel in a vehicle that will give him access to the public. he will go around the city hall. the next parade is being finalized. the tickets will be available starting next week. organizers say requiring tickets for those closest to the papal stage is important for security reasons. and the department of homeland security says the railways will be safe during the pope's visit to the u.s. the agency is focusing more attention on trains after that foiled attack in france two weeks ago. this weekend, agents will conduct "operation safety." that will involve random searches by officers and dogs. and counties in south jersey are stocking up on supplies, food, water and emergency kits, to be ready for anything that might happen. workers will back those supplies

live. robbers beat up a woman and her elderly mother during a home invasion. and this surveillance video captured the terrifying attack. [ screaming ] >> the screams of a 76-year-old woman there fighting for her life. this happened quickly. first, one man, then another, stormed into the home and ransacked the house. the invaders pistol-whipped the woman. her grandson tells nbc 10, he thankful she's alive. >> anger. anger. it's a coward act. it's two women. my feeling was, coming home to not a family. >> the men left through the front door not taking anything. the family believes they were after money they might have in the home. they plan to move now. new developments in the same-sex marriage fight in kentucky. after a defiant clerk of court

today, a same-sex couple was issued a marriage license for the first time in kentucky. the county clerk has refused on religious grounds to grant licenses to gay couples. yesterday, a federal judge threw davis in jail for defying those orders. gabe gutierrez is in kentucky for more on the events. >> reporter: for the first time, the court's office began to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. five of the deputy clerks told a federal judge they would do so, without the authorization of their boss. today, the first couple arrived, just after the office opened. >> how are you feeling this morning? >> happy. right now, i want to go hug my mom and dad. >> reporter: in federal court, kim davis broke down in tears. she insisted she could not issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, saying my conscience will not allow me. the judge found davis in

contempt and ordered her into federal custody. her husband says she is not backing down. >> we might be in russia. we might be over in iran because we have no more religious freedom no more. if we the people don't take it back, we're in trouble. >> reporter: how long is your wife prepared to say in jail? >> as long as it takes. >> reporter: the federal judge says she will remain in jail until she complies with the law. republican presidential candidate donald trump was on msnbc's "morning joe," talking about what's happening in kentucky. >> i'm a believer in both sides of the country. the simple answer is let her clerks do it. she's not letting her clerks do it, either. the other simple answer, rather than going through this because it's really a very, very sticky situation, a terrible situation, 30 miles away, they have other places. they have many other places where you can get licensed. and you have them actually quite

nearby. that's another alternative. >> he said he hates to see a county clerk put in jail over refusing of issuing the licenses. but the high court's ruling is the law of the land. 11:15 and a developing story right now. this is a live look from houston, texas, where police from around the country are at a church there from the funeral of harris county sheriff's deputy gillforth the funeral will include a 21 gun salute, a horse and a flyover. gillforth was gunned down as he was pumping gas. the suspect targeted him because he was wearing a uniform. one of the american heroes. one of the men who stopped the suspected terrorist attack on a train in france is back in the u.s. for a first time. spencer stone landed in california overnight. stone was released from a

hospital in germany, where doctors were treating him for injuries he suffered in thwarting that attack. a parade is being planned for him and his two other friends who stopped the gunman. the men were given france's highest award, the legion of honor, last month. here in the u.s., it's been the summer of the shark attack. apparently the summer is not over. not in australia. a 65-year-old man was attacked by a shark off australia's southeastern coast today. he was paddling near forster. near sydney. he managed to get back to shore. he was flown to a hospital. sharks are common off of australia's beaches. switching gears here, september is national education month. and the children of philadelphia is getting out the word about possible dangers with something that a lot of you parents are giving your kids every day. we're talking about dietary

supplement. few parents know the supplement industry is unregulated. there's a question about some of the ingredients that may not be on the label. we're joined by sarah, the pharmacy clinical manager at c.h.o.p. let's talk about supplements this parents give their children. >> a lot of them are multivitamin. vitamin d has been prominent, that we use sun screen. and vitamin d comes from the sun. there might be vitamin d deficiencies. sleeping disorders, might use melatonin. omega 3s. and that could help. and probiotics for digestic disorders are big these days, as

well. >> what are the dangers with some of these? not all of the ingredients are on the labels out there, right? >> you're correct. it is technically considered a regulated industry. but it's self-regulated. it's a buyer beware regulation. >> the fda -- >> the fda steps in if there's a problem identified with with a product. unlike pharmaceuticals, they don't have to get approval prior. the only way the fda can step in is once harm is done. >> have we seen cases where some of the supplements have led to problems in children? >> we absolutely have. we've had cases of lead poisoning. we've had children die of infections because they're contaminated with bacteria and fungus. some of them contain pharmaceuticals, as well. they're dangerous products out there. >> this is scary. we're running short on time.

what should parents be looking for? >> what parents can do is try to make sure that what they're purchasing is what the label states it is. if you look on the label. you see a verified sale. it's a 200-year-old institution. it tests all of the standards for pharmaceuticals and food additives. if it carries that seal, you can be sure that it what's on the label is in the battle. >> c.h.o.p. has been on the forefront educating parents about the dangers. and i know that parents appreciate the work you are doing there. sarah telling us some of the hidden dangers in supplements given to children. sarah, thanks for being here. >> thank you. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather, with bill henley. >> heading out the door, you may need that sunscreen.

we have hazy sunshine. it's been a quick warm-up. and it is muggy, after a nice break from the humidity yesterday. the temperatures feel hotter, thanks to the high humidity. the humidity will probably feel scattered showers and thunderstorms. so far, we don't have them. this weekend, things take a change for the nice and comfortable. 82 in allentown. northeast philadelphia, 83 degrees. look at the clouds over camelback. these are blowing in from the northeast. and these are the clouds, watching for showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. we could see heavy downpours, in the east-northeast winds. 9-mile-per-hour winds. a bit stronger in trenton. that wind will blow in clouds. tracking clouds in northern and central new jersey. so far, no rain associated with the clouds. we're sweeping the area. the radar will get active this afternoon, in the early to mid-afternoon hours. and should be tapering off this

11:28. we got this video in into the newsroom. philadelphia police are looking for a man who robbed a subway restaurant at gunpoint. the guy talked in around 10:00 p.m. took a gun out and went to the register. the worker opened that register before the guy took some money and ran off. if you have information there, call police. well, if you're trying to get around center city this weekend, it's going to be a little more difficult than usual. because of jay z's made in america festival. crews are testing the speaker system. right now, the oval, the parkway and the cross street there's are closed officially. 140,000 people are expected to attend the two-day festival on saturday and sunday. last night, we saw crews setting up the stages and testing the

this is one of the cool spots. camel beach. temperatures in the 70s in the mountains. and the clouds are moving in. already well into the 80s for philadelphia, wilmington and south jersey. the temperatures will be climbing a little more. not much. a little activity on the radar screen. it's trying to sprinkle. but showers and thunderstorms developing as clouds move in, with the wind coming out of the east-northeast. that will be picking up as we go into the afternoon hours. that's going to help hold our temperatures in the 80s. a cooling shower at 1:00 will have us in the middle 80s by 4:00. and the showers take a break this evening. they'll be out of the picture for the rest of the holiday weekend. got the seven-day forecast when i'm back later this half hour. bill ordered up this amazing weather video. people in western japan shocked

this morning by a tornado. look at this. incredible. looks like it might have been a waterspout. it moved onland there. the twister did not show up on radar. no damage. no injuries reported. that's news out of japan. dust devils are expected in the nevada desert. that's where the burning man music festival is going on. and check out this video from yesterday. people had to cover themselves when the powerful winds moved through the area there. a show they were not expecting. and a gaping hole in a street in northeast philadelphia. left people without water this morning. it's not the only time residents there have had this issue. the sinkhole formed around 5:00 p.m. monique braxton has been in the

neighborhood all morning. and the neighbors told you this is deja vu for them, right? >> reporter: absolutely, chris. i can tell you, the philadelphia water department says an eight-inch main broke. they don't know why. but we've opinion watching the crews, now, trying to repair it for about three hours. look at this cell phone video. amazing. i know it's dark. but people tell us on this block of shachalfont, that police wok them up about 5:45 this morning. 50 homes are affected and residents without water. this happened less than a month ago, a stone's throw away. >> it's been one thing after the other, lately. >> how are you coping with this? >> i went out and bought some water. >> really tough if you don't have water. a shower somewhere. a bath somewhere. it's a little hard. you can't wash your hands. can't do anything.

>> one person showed us pitchers of cold water she filled prior to the shutoff this morning. now, most of the damage was contained to the sidewalks and driveways. a few summer projects -- improvement projects, were washed away. pwd tells us, since the street has buckled, this repair could take longer than usual. they hope to have the street passable by the close of business today. we asked about how many water breaks have been this summer because it seems like there's been a lot. it's rare for the summer. we were told 141 breaks in all, since june. most of them still being investigated. live, now, in the northeast, monique braxton, nbc 10 news. at 11:34, new information on a story that stunned the community. the ntsb will meet next week to talk about the plane crash that killed lewis katz and six others. they're trying to figure out why

the business jet went down last year. the plane was leaving from bedford, massachusetts, headed to atlantic city, when it overran the runway and crashed into a ravine. on to decision 2016 now. vice president joe biden gave his most candid remarks on whether he will jump into the fray for the 2016 race. the vice president spoke at an atlanta synagogue. it was during a question and answer period, that he offered the most revealing information on pursuing the presidency for a third time. here's nbc's andrea mitchell. >> the biggest factor is whether my family and i have the energy to run. >> reporter: joe biden speaking at length for the first time about a possible 2016 presidential run. >> unless i can go to my party

serious. but it's a good thing the family has a sense of humor. they needed it. they have planned their wedding for the same day that the pope is giving a mass. >> i don't know. >> reporter: to complicate things even more, the wedding is two parts. the first in philadelphia. the second in bucks county, requiring guests to detour major routes just to get to the ceremony. about two dozen friends and family have canceled. >> if it happens, it happens. if i don't get it my way, it's okay. >> reporter: it will work out. ha survived a tough fight with cancer. she was recognized by president obama because her health coverage saved her life. planning a wedding around the pope doesn't seem so tough. >> we're trying not to stress out about it. it sucks that they can't be there because we wanted this to be more than just a wedding celebration. we wanted it to be a celebration

them or their families. it's called rock to the future. here to tell us more about it, jessica and josh kraft. thank you for being here. >> thank you for having us. >> a music power couple, right? >> exactly. >> i watched that video. it's really powerful. you're doing great things there. >> we're working in north philadelphia. >> on the video, you started this a few years ago, with a handful of students. >> we started in 2010. i left my job at an investment firm. and we started with 13 kids $15,000. and five years later, we wrapped up our fifth prom. we serve over 300 kids in philadelphia, with free music education. we're excited to how quickly we've grown and the impact we've made. >> 300 kids served for free music education. what's the idea behind this? kids -- these kids that are

getting this opportunity, they might not get a chance to do this, if not for your organization, right? >> yeah, that's right. like jess was saying before, reach about 300 kids. we have a lot of different program areas, too. we have an after-school program. in-school workshops. and we're doing summer camps, too. >> it was really inspirational. i was referencing the video. one of the girls said, i found out i was good at something and i matter. i'm important. that's what this is all about. we want to find something that we're good at. and they feel like they have a purpose. it's magical. >> it's about giving kids an opportunity to be creative and give them a chance they wouldn't be able to do. unfortunately, music education can be very expensive. most schools, if they're able to provide music, they don't provide contemporary music. we give kids an opportunity to write their own music, to

perform live with their peers and to use the schools they are learning strong social skills. >> you're serving the kensington, fishtown area. >> we have kids all over philadelphia come to your location. >> you're hoping to maybe grow into other areas of the city, as well? >> definitely. >> you're going to have a chance to see these young people perform this weekend. and really at a historic fall festival. the clark park fall festival, with rock to the future. that's saturday. that's saturday, september 19th. that's this weekend earlier. no. i'm a little ahead of myself. saturday, september 19th. the kids from rock to the future will the performing, right? >> uh-huh. there's going to be a number of craft vendors, food trucks. >> craft vendors not related to you guys. >> that's right.

arts and crafts. food trucks. there's going to be kids activities. going to be over ten bands performing. >> local philadelphia acts. >> including the rock to the future house band, which consists of students from our after-school program, playing covers. and a bunch of great bands, including black landlord, and udu, great local entertainment. >> we will be providing instrument zoo. >> an instrument zoo. >> kids can come in. it's completely free. they can come in and have their first music lesson, and touch electric guitars, drums, pianos. the first entry to learning music. we're doing a make your own shaker station. >> that may be the spark that starts it for some kids. is there anything more fun than playing music with people who love it? >> it's amazing.

growing. and showers not happening at the shore. 86 in northeast philadelphia. trenton and wrightstown, 83 degrees. wilmington, in the mid 80s already. and gone are the 70s from most areas. shenandoah at 78. reading and allentown at 82 degrees. and temperatures are climbing in delaware. 86 in middletown and newark. up to 87 in woodbine in south jersey and climbing. a few scattered clouds are blowing in from the northeast. those are the clouds will be watching for showers and possibly thunderstorms. could see heavy downpours during the afternoon hours. so far, it is completely dry. but i do expect that to change. hour-by-hour future cast, the storms will start to push to the west. reading, chester county, into new castle county and delaware and parts of south jersey, just on the other side of the delaware, are going to see that
