nbc 10 news starts now. it's the last holiday of the season. this morning, we'll fill you in on the special labor day events happening in our area, plus we're down the shore checking in with businesses to see if this summer was a boom or bust. we are less than three weeks away from the papal visit and now one community is asking what happens after the holy father leaves? get ready for a hot one. couldn't ask for a better day to be off from work, all things considered. we could have one more heat wave coming before the summer is officially over. this is nbc 10 news today. happy labor day. i'm rosemary connors. let's get right to meteorologist bill henley with the first alert

forecast. you can feel the humidity creeping up. >> i thought it wasn't too bad. >> my hair is feeling it, though. >> your hair always looks perfect, rosemary. 07 degrees in philadelphia. 50s for pottstown, millville and 66 in wilmington. sunshine will be bright on this labor day and the temperatures will climb from 69 degrees at 6:00 to 74 at 9:00. by lunch time we will be in the middle 80s. a little bit of a breeze out of the southwest. when i come back, your neighborhood by neighborhood forecast for labor day. right now, jessica boyington is watching traffic, if there is any. jessica? we're going to get to jessica in just a moment. let's get to breaking news. here's a live picture near 10th and 5th street. four of the cars were parked. you can see from the flashing lights that police are on the scene.

no reports of serious injuries. police are still trying to figure out what led up to this crash. we'll keep you posted. now let's check in with jessica boyington. she's keeping an eye on this situation plus she's checking the cameras. jessica? >> rosemary, right now there's not a lot of volume or traffic moving through the area. a lot of people are still sleeping. that accident scene will most likely be cleaned up before we start to see an increase in traffic and volume throughout the area. for right now, we'll head down the shore. if you're on route 73 around the atlantic city expressway, no problems on 73, the expressway is just fine as well. we won't see backups there as you head to or from the shore. as for the 42 freeway, northbound towards the philadelphia area, so far this morning it's only about a four-minute drive time. from northbound 55 up towards the walt whitman bridge, no problems there. you have to watch out for a water main break in pennsauken township on route 130 southbound

around route 190. the sun was shining this weekend down the shore and business was booming. people packed the boardwalk, eating ice cream, playing games and enjoying the beach one last time before school and work tomorrow. business owners at the shore tell us the weather has been incredible this summer and cheaper gas prices have been driving more people to the beach. >> i can tell by the foot traffic on the boardwalk it's unbelievable this year. >> would you say it's better than before sandy. >> it's getting there. if it's not right there, it is getting there, yes. >> that's goodç to hear. aaa says these are the lowest labor day gas prices since 2004. the national average right now is $2.40 a gallon. we are less than three weeks away from the pope's visit to philadelphia and tickets to see him at one of the three events are available starting tomorrow. there are 10,000 tickets available to see pope francis at independence hall on saturday, september 26th. it's first come, first served,

tomorrow starting at noon. logon to worldmeeting2015.org/tickets. for tickets to see the pope at the festival of families on saturday and the papal mass on sunday, go online wednesday. those tickets will get you into the secure zone on the ben franklin parkway, the closest area to see the pope. you can see the pope without tickets during two praise on saturday the 26th. he'll travel from eakins oval and back to the parkway for the festival. a second parade will be held on sunday but there's no set route for that parade just yet. everybody has been busy preparing for pope francis but what happens after he leaves? nbc 10's matt delucia is live this morning in camden where the community is asking what comes next? matt? >> reporter: the pope's itinerary does not include a visit to camden but the folks who work here with the homeless, with the poor, the less fortunate are hoping this papal visit will bring a lot to this

area, to this region. and really hoping that it wail make a situation that is really bad right now a whole lot better. a million or so people are expected to see the papal mass in just a few weeks. the big question over at the joseph charities are asking will his message encourage people to donate, to volunteer? the people here work with the homeless and the hungry and help rehab homes. >> a lot of people have heard the negative image of camden a lot these days. i think there are many of us that are working to change that. >> i hope it's going to bring a whole lot more attention so people come our way, we see what you're doing, we'd like to join this effort. >> reporter: of course, there are plenty of big and small city charities like that one that are throughout this area that are hoping this papal visit will do a lot more good, especially once pope francis leaves and people take that message with them.

the pope. >> police tell us there were no problems from the two-day event. a man was shot two times in the leg in philadelphia's queen neighborhood. 4zm%á$u$e shooter remains on th loose. several parked cars near 5th and christian streets were struck by stray bullets. no one was injured. now to a warning for parents in berks county. a suspected child predator is on the prowl after three luring attempts just in the past month. they all happened near the antietam pool in reading. if you have any information, reading police would like to hear from you. this morning, a woman is in critical condition after jumping in front of a police wagon. that's according to investigators who say it happened at 56th and spruce streets in philadelphia around 10:00 yesterday morning. a witness tells nbc 10 that the woman first tried to jump in

front of a septa bus but the driver swerved to avoid her. the accident is now under investigation. we are now one week away from the first eagles game of the season. and no one could have predicted who the third string quarterback would. vai sikahema is live in the digital operations center this morning with more on the quarterback shake-up. vai, fill us in. >> this is interesting. when it came down to selecting matt barclay or tim tebow, chip kelly selected neither man. the eagles have claimed rather quarterback steven morris off waivers from the jaguars. the undrafted free agent from the university of miami played in just three preseason games for the jags, throwing for 254 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. since morris was claimed off waivers he's not eligible for the practice squad, so he will complete the team's 53-man roster. >> we had an offer for a trade for matt so we thought that was

accident scene we have out in center city on 10th and south street. what happened, there's three cars actually involved that were occupied with people. they actually collided and then hit four other parked cars on the street. so now a little bit of a mess out there. police activity on the scene and investigating the reason for why that happened for right now. that's what you have to watch out for. not a lot of traffic moving through that area. as for the schuylkill expressway around girard avenue everything is moving along, eastbound right in here, headed towards the center city area, still a 13-minute trip. from the blue route to the vine street expressway, watch out for road work, not an active scene right there. as for new jersey, a water main break in pennsauken township on route 130 southbound around route 90. police detouring people around the scene. out of hiding, the dentist who killed cecil the lion is going back to work. why he says now is the time to return. many retailers are laboring

on this labor day, getting ready for what's expected to be the latest, greatest thing to prevent credit card fraud. we'll explain what it is and when you'll see the changes. before we go to break, here's a look at one of labor day events happening today in philadelphia, the national constitution center is inviting folks to take a step back into the 18th century for a colonial field day. starting at 10:00 this morning, enjoy several activities for the whole family on the museum's front lawn in old city.

for an interview about the controversial killing of cecil the lion. he spent more than a month out of sight after becoming the target of protests. palmer says he believes he acted legally and disputes that the lion was killed with a gun. he insists that the lion was wounded with an arrow and killed the next day with an arrow. the dentist plans to return to his practice tomorrow. animal welfare officials say an ocean county woman accused of hoarding nearly 40 dogs in a house filled with trash has been found guilty of animal cruelty. some of the dogs were caked in their own waste and hiding in the walls. volunteers spent eight hours removing the wets from the house. the woman was fined nearly $2,000 and has been barred from owning any animals. visitors and staff at the indianapolis zoo were put on lockdown after a cheetah escaped his enclosure. the 4-year-old male named pounce cleared the exhibit wall and roamed a grassy area near the fence.

the zoo entrances were closed off while zoo officials tracked down and tranquilized the cat. the rumors are buzzing ahead of an announcement by apple that's scheduled for wednesday. apple is expected to unveil its latest iphone. blogs are reporting that apple will unveil a pair of next generation iphones and discontinue sales of the iphone 5c. there are also reports that the tech giant is working on a smartphone with a 4 inch screen but there are no immediate plans to release it. the summer recess is ending. lawmakers return to washington tomorrow to face a long list of unfinished business with looming deadlines. congress will spend the first days back in session debating the iran nuclear deal. also topping the agenda, lawmakers have to approve a short-term spending plan to keep the government running past september 30th. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> it is a clear start this morning. this labor day. and we are going to see some

sunshine. that includes the shore, another nice start this morning. the temperatures have dropped into the 50s and 60s and are going to stay on the cool side to start with. we'll see a quick warmup during the day today with lots of sunshiée for the entire area. no sign of any wet weather for us today or over the next few days. that live view will be nice and sunny and it will be in the lower 80s at cape may today. inland will be a hotter day. 4:18 right now. we're under clear skies in center city. that's a live view looking across the delaware from the adventure aquarium. 70 humidity, 87%. winds out of the south/southwest at 5 miles an hour. we're running 4 degrees warmer than yesterday. we will see sunny skies from the shore to the city to the mountains today. with warmer weather to come, in fact, hotter weather to come. this morning, though, pretty nice. 70 in philadelphia. most of the rest of the area is cooler. 62 in kennett square, horsham is 63 degrees. 61 in wrightstown.

there are 50s north and west for quakertown, 55 and 54 in coatesville and sunshine will be nice and bright with temperatures climbing from the 60s at the shore into the 90s inland. just the very low 90s today. radar is in the clear. you can see no activity this morning and none expected. the forecast is calling for sunny skies. it will be a hot one. upper 80s and low 90s this afternoon with southwesterly winds below 10 miles an hour. tomorrow 94 and more humid tomorrow. sunshine will be right for tuesday. come wednesday and thursday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms for thursday and friday. then it looks like nice weather as we head into the weekend with just a chance of some showers. 4:19 on this monday. let's check in now with jessica boyington who's keeping an eye on a crash in center city. jessica? >> and rosemary, yes, what we're dealing with here is a multivehicle crash. three cars actually having people inside of them and

actually hit four parked cars. so now a total of seven cars involved in this accident scene. police on the scene as well. that is at 10th and south street. watch out for that if you're heading around the center city area a little bit this morning. we're not seeing a lot of volume around the scene, that's because it's very early for that. 495 around cottman avenue, no problems so far, a 14-minute drive time. if you're heading into the center city area, southbound up towards the vine, no problems if you're headed northbound as well. pennsauken township, watch out for the right-hand lane that's closed on route 130 southbound at route 90 due to a water main break. rosemary? >> a new schedule is in effect for patco riders. let's take a live look at the ben franklin bridge where a track rehabilitation project is entering its final stages. riders see revised schedule from thursday through sunday night until the end of october. patco says it plans to return to a full normal schedule for the morning commute between mondays

i lot of retailers are laboring this holiday to get ready for what's supposed to be the latest, greatest technology to prevent credit card fraud. swiping will soon be a thing of the past. the must anticipated pin and chip credit cards are about to become the norm at retailers nationwide. about 50% of all stores are said to already have the readers. the deadline for retailers is october 1st. credit card companies have until the end of the year to get the new safer cards into the hands of consumers. >> seeing a draumt drop amatic p by 70, 80 or more percent. >> 80 other countries already have the technology in place. e-cigarettes have jumped in

popularity among teenagers in recent years. now new research just out this morning suggest that some teens are using them to smoke marijuana in front of their parents. researchers from yale university surveyed nearly 4,000 high school students in connecticut. nearly a third had tried e-cigarettes. of those kids 18% said they vaped marijuana. there's little to no smell. >> fear of getting caughdç has gone down. and that's a big deal. once you remove that fear of getting punished they're going to experiment more and i'm not surprised one bit about it. >> since the survey was anonymous, some experts believe the numbers underrepresent marijuana vaping across the country. to more health news. as flu season approaches, the american academy of pediatrics
