school. we'll get more to it in a little bit. first no holiday for the political candidates. new presidential poll numbers that spell bad news for hillary clinton as she's losing ground in the democratic race and the general election. we'll break down things with chuck todd in a moment. first, nbc's kristen welker is in davenport. good morning. >> reporter: natalie, good morning to you. labor day means the presidential candidates will, as is tradition, be out in force. they will be ramping up campaigns for the fall season including secretary hillary clinton. her aides say they are not concerned about the latest poll numbers. they expected a competitive primary. still, they are hoping for a new beginning. hillary clinton in iowa looking to restart her campaign. >> if you work hard and you do your part you should be able to get ahead and stay ahead. >> reporter: clinton's raspy voice underscoring her nonstop schedule as the marist poll
7:03 am
shows she might be in trouble as sanders closes the gap in iowa, trailing by just 11 points. things are worse in new hampshire where for the first time in our polls sanders has over taken clinton. a key factor, ongoing questions about her e-mails. clinton acknowledged she paid a state department staffer to manage her server and in an exclusive interview with andrea mitchell she addressed the broader controversy. >> i'm sorry this has been confusing to people and has raised a lot of questions. i take responsibility. it wasn't the best choice. >> reporter: republican candidates keep piling on. >> for heaven's sake, this was the secretary of state. she had a server in her basement. >> reporter: meanwhile donald trump is surging. when matched against clinton in a general election, trump comes out on top in iowa, beating clinic ton by five points though she holds a one-point lead in

7:05 am
>> the fact is bernie sanders is connecting. we sit here focus on hillary clinton and there is no doubt i think she's come across scripted. the e-mail story has reignited doubts that maybe progressive democrats had eight years ago about her. they are back a little bit. throw it all together and you have a surging sanders candidacy, tapping in to an excited, progressive wing. thrown together with a clinton campaign that looks like they are tentative, like the candidate sometimes looks like she's struggling to get out from under this e-mail story. here you go. i know the campaign said it's just iowa-new hampshire, they are white states, not diverse. wait for it to move to the south. losing both of them would be disastrous. >> chuck, in the background of this we have vice president biden weighing a decision about whether or not to get into the race. would you look at the calendar?
7:06 am
there is a debate coming up next month. when does he have to make a move? >> what's interesting is those close to biden said the vice president is trying to determine what his drop-dead deadline is, the last filing deadline. he could go until november without missing a state. without missing a ballot. that said, he himself has been told end of the month is more realistic. if you want to do a competitive campaign and have a shot at winning you better be in by october 1. the problem is he's not there yet. he's looking to buy more time which tells me i don't know if he has the fire in the belly to do what it takes to take on clinton to run. he may want to run. is he willing to take on clinton to do it. >> as we look at your nbc poll on the other side of the republican party donald trump is essentially tied with ben carson. in iowa. he's winning by a wide margin in new hampshire. this was the summer of trump. are we looking at the fall and
7:07 am
winter of trump as well? >> we could be. i think it's the winner of the outsiders. take carson and trump. take the numbers together, it's over 50% in iowa. outsiders are doing well in new hampshire. john kasich doing well as well. i think this has been a horrible month for the establishment candidates, great for outsiders. that's what we'll see throughout fall. if it's not trump, carson, fiorina, which of the outsiders has the ability to hang for a while? >> it will be a fascinating year ahead. chuck todd, happy labor day. see you. >> thanks, willie. >> labor day mark it is unofficialle end of summer but the hot weather isn't going anywhere this week, sadly. i don't know if you're hanging on. there is severe weather as well. dylan is here for al. good morning. >> good morning. sadly a lot of people are excited for the heat to hang on, not quite ready to say good-bye to summer yet. this high pressure will make it
