america festival. it appeared the taxi was going about 50 miles per hour. aid officers stressed the actual speed of the cab has not been determined. they're trying to get more information from the taxi driver as he is in the hospital. coming up in the next 30 minutes i'll hear from one of the investigators who is working this case. i'll tell you why. this is different from the other fatal accidents involving pedestrians and vehicles that have been happening in philadelphia over the summer. this was different. you will hear from the investigator coming up from the next 30 minutes.

live in north philadelphia, jesse gary, nbc 10 news. >> thanks, jesse. we'll see you at 11:30. it was a busy morning for philadelphia's wynnefield heights neighborhood. the driver of the pickup truck claimed a car coming in the opposite direction crossed into his lane. to avoid the car, he veered off the road and crashed into the trees and a transformer knocking down utility poles, but sources say that investigators are looking into speed and alcohol as factors. the driver of the truck went to a nearby hospital and is expected to be okay. in center city, philadelphia, police are investigating a chain reaction crash involving seven cars. three drivers collided and they crashed into four parked cars. one of the cars ended up on the sidewalk. no one was hurt. ♪ ♪ let's head down the shore now for a live look at the beaches in cape may. plenty of people there are

enjoying one last day of sun and sand on this unofficial end of the season. we've had beautiful weather all summer and we will certainly cap it off on a high note. meteorologist bill henley is tracking temperatures in the 80s. >> it looks great. bright sunshine and after we saw low clouds and fog to start with inland areas, but completely cleared out. look at the sunshine near boathouse row. already it's up to 80 degrees in philadelphia and as the temperature goes up the humidity goes down and sunshine, that's going to be around for a few days, but the temperatures will go warmer over the next couple of days. 82 in philadelphia, millville, atlantic city and toms river in the 80s and redding is at 81 degrees and right at cape may at 77 degrees and the shore will see low 80s like ocean view has. right now woodvine is at 79 degrees and in the atlantic city area it's 78 degrees and while

it's up to 78 and it is 82 in northfield. so a warm, sunny day today. temperatures will be near 90 degrees this afternoon and we may make it into the 90s today and 84 at 1:00. by 4:00, 89 degrees and the temperatures will start to cool down into the middle 80s by 7:00 this evening. if we hit 90 today that will set the stage for a heat wave. another one before summer comes to an end. rosemary, i'll show you the seven-day forecast when i'm back later this half hour. >> as bill mentioned it will be hot and sunny on this labor day. as nbc 10's katy zachry explains and they are banking on the weather today to boost their bottom line. >> reporter: you can't complain about the weather today or over the long holiday weekend. it was picture perfect here at the shore and a great way to end the summer for so many families and a good way to boost sales. in fact, we're hearing from some

business owners in ocean city that the great summer weather really fueled business there. atlantic city vendors say the same thing and there they had a campaign this summer to attract the non-gambling crowd. the sunny days and the low humidity they had, that didn't hurt either. it's been a great summer. the weather has been fabulous and we've seen a drop-off in september and if the weather is nice people still come down. today to celebrate the labor day holiday, there are events scheduled throughout many of the jersey shore towns. reporting from the boardwalk in ventner, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. happening now, philadelphia workers are taking part in the 28th annual tri-state labor day parade and family celebration. it kicked off around 10:00 this morning from the sheet metal workers union hall in south philly. marchers have been making their way up columbus boulevard to pens landing and that's where you see them right now. pennsylvania governor tom wolf

addressed the workers before the start of the parade. >> on labor day we celebrate the people, everybody, ordinary americans and ordinary pennsylvanians who made this country what it is. he praised pennsylvania's workforce and talked about good jobs and public policies for the state and the country. and now to breaking news out of new york. a lawyer who was on the staff of new york governor andrew cuomo was shot before the west indian day parade in brooklyn. carry gabay was shot in the head and in critical condition. he is one of three people shot right before the parade today. we will continue to follow this and if we get more throughout the newscast we will pass it along. >> in other news, the fourth year of the made in america festival is in the books. when the songs ended crews spent

the night -- crews spent the evening cleaning up the aftermath of the celebration. a record-setting 140,000 people packed the parkway over two days for the annual event. after the day's cleanup is done, the city will be getting the parkway ready for many more people during the pope's visit in 19 days. rapper j. cole was one of the performers who took the main stage last night. beyonce drew big crowds on saturday. the event featured dozens of musical acts curated by jay-z himself. the concert doubled as a dry run ahead of the pope's visit to the parkway a little bit later this month. that's when 1.5 million people are expected to flood philadelphia. >> my dad got out of control. you can deal with these crowds, but not the pope's droud. these crowds are about it for

me. >> i'll be down here partying with the pope. >> i don't know if it will look like this party, though. >> it would still be awesome, though. >> police tell us there were no problems during the concert throughout the two-day event. a man is recovering this morning after he was shot multiple times in the leg overnight in philadelphia's queen village neighborhood. police say the man is in stable condition, but the shooter remains on the loose. several parked cars near fifth and christian streets were struck by stray bullets. no one else was injured. now to a warning for parents in brooks county. a suspected child predator is on the prowl. in all three incidents the man was undressed from the waist down. in one case he asked a 12-year-old girl to have sex with him. hear from you. critical condition after jumping in front of a police wagon. that's according to

investigators. they say it happened at 56th and spruce streets in west philadelphia around 10:00 yesterday morning. a witness tells nbc 10 that the woman first tried to jump in front of the septa bus, but the driver swerved to avoid her. the accident is now under investigation. some good news to report this morning, a brooks county police dog is back home from the hospital after being injured from the line of duty. cody was looking for possible intruders at a school last week in redding when he fell 15 to 20 feet from a catwalk. it was at the university of pennsylvania's veterinary hospital and was released last night. this morning an ocean county woman was charged with animal cruelty after dogs were found living in deplorable conditions. some of the dogs were caked in their own waist and hiding in the walls. volunteers spent eight hours removing the pets from the house. the woman was fined nearly $2,000 and has been barred from

owning any animals. talk about a bittersweet reality check. today is the last day of summer vacation for more than 100,000 students in our region. the school district of philadelphia will officially philadelphia will officially kick off the 2015-2016 school year tomorrow. more than 200 schools will open their doors to students in grades k through 12. one local community group plans to make the most of these final hours before the new school year begins from now until 6:00 this evening there is a back to school block party and book bag giveaway on west york street between 16th and 17th and there is free food and live entertainment and the event is sponsored by the one day at a time drug and alcohol recovery group. call it a mystery in the sky. a fiery sight caught on camera. what the experts think it could be after the break. and hits are not unusual in

fireball streak across the sky in bangkok. it happened during this morning's rush hour and caught on dash cam video. the sight lit up social media. one scientist said it is most likely an asteroid, but scientists are trying to figure out what it was. a public viewing is under way for a chicago police officer murdered on the job last week. police officers stood at attention as a hearse arrived at a high school near fox lake. lieutenant joe gliniewicz was shot and killed last week on duty. heel be buried later today. police continue to search the chicago suburbs for three men suspected of killing the officer. officials say gliniewicz, a 30-year veteran of the force was chasing three men believed to be engaged in suspicious activity when they shot and killed him. now to decision 2016, hillary clinton is courting voters in iowa after a new poll shows that she is losing some ground to bernie sanders.

nbc 10's tracie potts has the latest numbers. hillary clinton's negative numbers are up in both iowa and new hampshire. she's still leading iowa. that's where she's campaigning today, but in new hampshire senator bernie sanders has a nine-point lead even if vice president biden joins the race. >> don't tell anybody. i think they're getting nervous. don't tell anybody. >> reporter: donald trump still has solid leads in both state ps upon in new hampshire, his closest competitor is ohio governor john kasich. >> at the end of the day they're going to want somebody who can actually get the job done. >> kasich, carly fiorina, lindsay graham and scott walker will all be at a labor day picnic in new hampshire. walker is on a motorcycle tour trying to drum up support. marco rubio and rick santorum will be in south carolina. the big story remains hillary clinton and her dwindling lead. >> this is one of the most

i don't mean labor. i mean any american worker. biden also called for more equitable taxation of middle-class workers versus higher earners. this video showing a referee being blindsided during a high school football game near san antonio, texas, is making national headlines this morning and it's sparking an investigation, as well. the game turned ugly when two players on the high school squad appeared to target the referee with hits from different angles. >> according to the associated press the incident came after officials called unsportsmanlike penalties and ejected two players for separate infractions. both players who hit the ref have been suspended from school and from the team. in a statement the school district says a full investigation will be launched when school reopens tomorrow. it is still unclear whether the referee in question will press any charges. a washington state family

returned from vacation this weekend to find a squatter living in their home. that wasn't it, he wasn't just sleeping there and eating their food. he practically sold everything from the mattresses to the appliances. he even sold the washer and the dryer. the homeowner came face-to-face with one man inside his house who was there to buy something. >> what are you doing at my house. he said i'm here for the microwave. what do you mean you're here for the microwave. yeah, i came here to get the microwave. no, you're not. and nothing is for sale in my house and that's when i heard foot steps and went out the back door. >> the man was spotted on a neighbor's surveillance camera, but police have yet to catch up with him. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 18 minutes after 11:00. it's a quick warm up this morning after some fog and low clouds. they're out of here and it's

sunshine for the rest of the day. if we hit 90 today it's a sure bet we'll be in the 90s for tomorrow and wednesday. later this week the temperatures start finally coming down with some much-needed rainfall. could see some heavy downpours come thursday. this morning, though, 81 degrees i+ bank park, look at that sunshine and it will be a sunny day and clear evening for baseball and going to see the phils and the braves. the temperature, with sunshine at 7:05 will be in the middle 80s and southwesterly suwynwind 10 miles an hour will come down a little bit and at 77 degrees. we are seeing that southwesterly breeze already and it's an 8 mile-an-hour breeze for wilmington and philadelphia. that helped to move the fog and low clouds out, but it's also starting to bring in a little more humidity. you really feel it more over the next couple of days than today. satellite shows we're completely in the clear right now.

so the neighborhood by neighborhood forecast calling for bright sunshine and camelback, 87 this afternoon and brilliant sunshine and 89 for bethlehem and pensberg and morgantown and into the low 90s for a abbington and no sign of the 90s and low 80s and rehoboth topping out at 80 degrees and for ventnor city 80 degrees and it is upper 80s and low 90s and malvern will hit 90 degrees and it's also 90 in berlin today. a hot day today and it gets hotter and steamier tomorrow. 69 in the morning and humidity goes higher with a high of 92 degrees and you'll see sunshine wednesday and then it's showers and thunderstorms on thursday, keeping temperatures in the upper 80s thursday afternoon and the rain that arrives on

the summer season is winding down and that means flu season is coming. all children 6 months and older should be vaccinated. there are two types was injections that protect multiple strains of the flu and the mist is approved for healthy patients over the age of 2. mandatory flu vaccinations for all health care workers. a new study shows siblings are the most likely source of pertussis or whooping cough. researchers studied more than 1300 cases of infant peritusis, 20% of infects came from mothers, but 35% came from one of the baby's siblings. experts suggest that expectant

mothers vaccinate their kids during pregnancy to better protect newborns. e-cigarettes have jumped in popularity among teenagers in recent years. new research suggests that some teens are using them to smoke marijuana right in front of their parents. researchers from yale university surveyed nearly 4,000 high school students in connecticut. nearly a third had tried e-cigarettes. of those kids, 18% said they had vaped marijuana. >> their fear of getting caught has gone down and that's a big deal. once you remove that fear of getting punished they'll be experimenting more, and i'm not surprised one bit about it. >> some experts believe the numbers underrepresent marijuana vaping across the country. out of hiding and talking about what happened. the dentist who killed cecil the lion will return to work this week after sparking protests and outrage all over the world. coming up, how he says the

(easy listening music) ♪ this is nbc 10 news. a crash involving a cab driver in center city claims the lives of two people who were in town to see the made in america concert. this morning we are learning new details about the deadly collision. the crash happened right in the heart of center city philadelphia at a time when few people were on the road because of the holiday. nbc 10's jesse gary has been on scene since early this morning and talking to investigators. jesse, fill us in. >> rosemary, part of that

evidence is a blood sample taken from a cab driver shortly after the accident. police say it's standard procedure any time there is a fatal accident. also investigators are checking traffic cameras in the area of broad and arch street to see if one recorded the accident and the aftermath. police say two 25-year-olds from the phoenix area were crossing eastbound. a taxi cab driver was headed north on broad, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene and the woman rushed to hahnemann hospital right around the corner, but she died there. the cab driver complaining from chest pains was also rushed to hahnemann. investigators say the driver did not speed off from the scene. >> the good thing here is he didn't leave the scene. so we have a lot more than we would have for all of those that do leave. he did the right thing. he didn't make an apparent crime by not leaving the scene. he stayed there. >> police told the heavily damaged cab so they can check it for more evidence.

investigators say the speed limit at the accident site is 25 miles per hour and witnesses told police it appeared the taxi was going about 50 miles per hour. a.i.d. officers stressed to us that they're still working the case and still doing their investigation and they do not know exactly how fast the cab was going, but that will be part of the complete investigation into this accident. live outside a.i.d. headquarters in north philadelphia. jesse gary, nbc 10 news. now let's check on our other top stories. sources say investigators are looking into speed and alcohol as possible factors in this crash in philadelphia's wynnefield heights neighborhood, but the driver of a pickup truck claims that another car crossed over into his lane causing him to veer off the road. utility crews were also on scene this morning fixing a power line that came crashing down or it came down during the crash. on this labor day in philadelphia, workers marched in the 28th annual tri-state labor day parade and family celebration. the parade made his way to pens

landing. the fourth year of the made in america festival is in the books. crews spent the overnight hours cleaning up the aftermath of the celebration. a record-setting 141,000 people packed the parkway over two days for the annual event. happening right now, president obama is at a union breakfast and rally in boston. here is a live picture of that rally and breakfast in boston. during his speech to the labor union, he is expected to announce an executive order requiring paid sick leave for employees of federal contractors. the white house says the order will extend benefits to around 300,000 workers. nbc 10 first alert weather. plenty of people will be spending the unofficial end of summer at citizens bank park tonight. the phillies are back for a ten-game homestand as they take on the braves.

will the weather cooperate for the game and your other outdoor plans tonight? meteorologist bill henley is here. >> the weather will stay nice tonight. look at this great scene from the pocono mountains and camel beach, no surprise the crowd is growing there with bright sunshine and temperatures that are now in the upper 70s in the mountains and 77 degrees for mount pocono. look at the 80s, but these are going to climb to the 90-degree mark in philadelphia and other spots, too, thanks to the bright sunshine that we're enjoying now. the humidity is growing down and it's 64% in philadelphia. it's still a bit higher in wilmington and dover after fog and low clouds and look at allentown and redding and comfortable with reading in the upper 40s and temperatures will be climbing as humidity comes down this afternoon and the next couple of days will turn steamier. bright sunshine at 1:00 and 84 near the 90-degree mark and at 4:00, i do expect to hit 90 and

then we'll get a couple of more opportunities to hit 90 degrees or above this week. the seven-day forecast just ahead, rhodes mary. >> thanks, bill, the minnesota dentist who killed cecil the lion has come out of hiding and is speaking out about the act that sparked outrage all over the world. we get more now from nbc's stephanie gosk. >> reporter: breaking his silence, minnesota dentist walter palmer who faced worldwide backlash after killing cecil the lion on a hunting expedition in africa now says he did not intentionally kill the beloved lion. telling the associated press and the minneapolis star tribune in an exclusive joint interview, if i had known this lion had a name and was important to the country or a study obviously, i wouldn't have taken it. nobody in our hunting party knew before or after the name of this lion. after palmer's identity was revealed in late july, his dental office and home became protest sites. petitions began circling to have

him extradited to zimbabwe. his vacation prop ererty in floa vandalized. it caused him to close his practice and disappear, but he insisted to reporters he was not in hiding. >> i've been out of the public eye. that doesn't mean i'm in hiding, palmer said. i've been among people, family and friends. location is really not that important. palmer now set to return to his minneapolis area dental office on tuesday says he doesn't know what the future holds after he and his family have been vilified across social media with some posts suggesting violence. this has been especially hard on my wife and my daughter. they've been threatened in social media and again, i don't understand that level of humanity to come after people not involved at all. >> that was nbc's stephanie gosk reporting. we are less than three week away from the pope's visit to

philadelphia and tickets to see him in the best spots are available starting tomorrow. there are 10,000 tickets available to see pope francis at independence hall on saturday, september 26th and it's first come first serve. you need to log on to world meeting 2015.org/tickets for tickets to see the pope on saturday and the papal mass on sunday. you can go online wednesday. those tickets will get you into the secure zone on the ben franklin parkway which is the closest area to the people. you can see the pope during two parades on saturday 26th and he will travel around city hall and back to the parkway for the festival. a second parade will be held on sunday, but there's no set route or time for that parade just yet. the city of philadelphia and a number of local organizations are busy preparing for the pope's visit, but when pope francis leaves, will his message live on. nbc 10's matt delucia visited

camden and a charity there that the papal visit will inspire people long after he's gone. >> the pope's itinerary does not include a stop in camden, but those who work with the poor and homeless here are hoping this papal visit is just the thing needed to make things a little better. >> we're changing lives together. that's what it's about. >> reporter: and still with just under a few weeks until pope francis comes to philadelphia, charities like the joseph's house in camden can't wait until he comes and goes. >> i hope it will bring a whole lot more attention so people will say we see what you're doing, we'd like to join this effort. >> sophia started giving back and first helping to paint the massive mural of pope francis that will go up just over the river and now she's giving her artistic talent to the romero housing, painting more murrals here. >> i've always wanted to give back through art and i really like what the pope is doing, and

i wanted to be a part of that. >> a lot of people have heard the negative sort of image of camden a lot these days, and i think that there are many of us that are working to change that. >> reporter: pilah hogan says a lot of that has to do with housing to put the homeless into homes. >> there are things locally that we're all paying attention to and we can all do shortly and in small bites to get something done here. this homeless shelter can house 80 at night, but it's not enough. workers here turn away two dozen every day. john klein wrote a letter to pope francis hoping maybe a surprise appearance would inspire others. >> i invited him to come on over and see the efforts we're trying to make and bless what we're doing and we'd love to see you. so i don't know. maybe he'll come by. it would be great. >> in camden, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. now is a good time to

card in where the blue light is and put the security code part in first and push it all of the way in. >> okay. >> pretty soon, swipes will be out and chips will be in. the chip and pin credit cards are about to become the norm nationwide. >> october 1st is the deadline when retailers are trying to have chip readers put in place. >> about 60% of all stores are said to have talready have the s and they're getting the new safer cards into the hands of consumers. >> we've seen dramatic drops in fraud in other markets as soon as chip cards are distributed to consumers, by 70%, 80% or more. >> reporter: however, they are not truly chip and pin, just chip and signature for now. the credit card industry argues it's asking too much to ask consumers to remember yet another four-digit pin which the

79 degrees and radar shows no sign of wet weather for us until later in the week. you can see some scattered showers moving through the midwest. we will see some showers and possibly some thunderstorms come thursday, but until then, all of that activity will stay to our west. tracking a new tropical storm, this is grace. grace is expected to remain a tropical storm, in fact, it's weakened in the last few hours and now with 45 mile an hour wind and moving due west at 17 miles an hour and it is expected to keep moving due west. the computer miles is making it north of due west and possibly impacting puerto rico this weekend at 2:00 in the afternoon and grace is expected to weaken by then, but they could get much-needed rainfall out of that storm system as it moves to the west. we need the rain and not going to see it today and nothing, but sunshine today. a hot one this afternoon and upper 80s and low 90s with southwesterly winds 3 to 8 miles

an hour and just enough to bring more humidity through tomorrow and it will turn much steamier and temperatures get warmer and the more humidity in the air and the warmer those morning temperatures are. 69 degrees and 94 degrees tuesday afternoon and steamier wednesday, and 71 to start with and up to 92 wednesday afternoon and a break from the high heat and not the humidity and we'll see showers and thunderstorms. we need it, too. thursday the rain will come down and continues into friday, and then we'll get a break later friday and saturday is looking good and we could see another round of showers come through sunday and especially likely sunday morning and then sunday afternoon, just 81 degrees. we'll be right back.
