let's start with bill henley and the first alert forecast. it could hit 90 again? >> it will be beyond 90. we're in the 60s and 70s to start with. 74 degrees in philadelphia. 66 in allentown. 70 degrees in dover. why are we on the lookout for fog? there's none yet. we could see fog before the sun comes up. a southwesterly breeze at 9:00. that is bringing in humidity. it will be a muggier day to day. 78 degrees by 9:00. then we're on the verge of 90 degrees at noon time today. those are the forecast neighborhood by neighborhood to show you which areas will be in the 90s and well into the 90s this afternoon when i'm back in ten minutes. right now, it is a tuesday. jessica has your first alert traffic. >> we're starting things off on the vine street expressway. everything is moving fine right around 24th street. watch out for this road work in

here. not an active scene but just cones and things in the area. all lanes still open. so that's eastbound headed towards 95. the westbound drive time, we're still really great. three minutes. under five minutes is no problem there. heading out the door, have to get back to work today? no problem so far. 13 minute trip. schuylkill expressway is fine. no problems on the blue route. mass transit is doing fine. >> new from overnight, a bar fight in philadelphia's only neighborhood led to gunfire, injuries and charges. it happened at fifth and olney after midnight. a fik broke out after a woman stole a woman's purse. the man is in critical condition. the woman is stable. officers chased down the suspected shooter and arrested him nearby. all three people will face charges. >> happening today, the first

day of school. students across the tri-state area will be cracking those books again after a long summer break. hopefully it felt long for them. nbc 10s katy zachry is live at carver high school. back to school time. >> yes, probably did not feel long enough. they'll feel that when the alarms go off in a few hours. students throughout philadelphia will be celebrating and their families will be celebrating the first day of the 2015-2016 school year. and one of the -- there are 200 schools in the city opening doors. one of them is carver high school. this is near temple's campus. the superintendent and mayor nutter will visit this school and take part in a traditional bell ringing ceremony. there are changes taking place across the district this year. but here at carver, they've added a seventh and eighth grade class to the science and technology school. it's a move that is being hailed a win for students and their families. this is a specialized program. and it's now being offered to

younger children. now there is some anxiety felt this morning from students and parents because the school year is starting out without a state budget. so coming up in the next 25 minutes, we're going to share with you some comments from governor tom wolf himself on that topic. we'll talk about what changes you could see in the classroom because of that state budget that is not been decided upon yet. reporting live in north philadelphia, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. >> students will also head back to school today in camden. they plan to lead the mire on a tour of several schools for the start of the new year. south jersey native and nba player jason thompson will give away backpacks to some students in the area. we're following a developing story in south jersey. a forest fire in manchester township may keep burning for a while. the fire is burning at a remote area near the burlington county line. it burned almost 1,000 acres

now. there is no threat, they say, to any property. firefighters say it could take a couple days to get it under control. also in south jersey, funeral services being held today for the family that died in a murder/suicide last week. police say lendon bahary shot his partner and two young kids last wednesday before setting their house on fire and killing himself. services for all four will be held in long branch this afternoon. police have not released a motive. in philadelphia, a man raped a woman and tried to carjack a driver last night. they arrested the suspects. investigators sat woman was sitting in her car in olnye around 6. 306789 p.m. when the man forced her out of the car and sexually assaulted her. he then tried to carjack a nearby driver before police caught him. happening today, if you're looking to score a ticket to see the pope in philadelphia this could be your day. 10,000 free tickets are up for grabs for the address on

independence mall. matt is live with details on how you can get your hand on one of those. >> you'll have to be close to a computer or have internet access. the tickets are only available online starting at noon today. this is for the event here at independence hall. the papal address focusing on immigration. that will be the one on saturday the 26th. 10,000 tickets as we mentioned will be available. they are first come first serve with a limit of four per person. more to talk about here. 10,000 for the festival of families and 10,000 for the papal mass will be offered starting tomorrow. so there is a difference here. today's ticket is only for the speech at independence hall. now this online ticketing came after announced that people would not be able to get close to the pope without one and the majority of tickets are given out to churches and per igsers in our area. the website is world meeting 2015.org slash tickets. and that link is not open until the tickets go available --

become available and up for grabs later on today. that will happen at noon. for now i'm live in independence hall. matt delucia. >> if you don't get the tickets, you can still see the pope during two parade. they're having one on saturday the 26th. the pope will travel down the parkway around city hall and then back down the parkway to the oval during the festival of families event. then there will be a second parade on sunday the 27th prior to the papal mass on the parkway. the route for that one has not been released yet. >> and seniors and musicians are rehearsing in cuba. pope frances will celebrate mass there next weekend before he travels to the u.s. this will be the pope's first trip to cuba. the nass havana is expected to be a cuban affair with all musical performances that event composed by cuban artists.

and be sure to check the nbc 10 app for the pope's full itinerary. it's available right now at the nbc 10 app. 4:08 now. happening today, rowan university will release a report. over the past decade rowan university's economic impact increased from $17 million in 2004 to more than $108 million today. that report found that in the area alone, they support more than 1,000 external jobs. it also says that rowan is helping raise property values in three communities including glassborough, camden and stras straussberg. >> eight minutes after 4:00. it is a muggy morning. the temperatures are going to be heading back into the 90s this afternoon. another hot and humid day.

we have a heat wave on our hands. but then we're tracking some showers. the first showers could arrive later tomorrow. but especially later in the week. showers and thunderstorms will bring the temperatures back down to earth and give us much needed rainfall. right now, 70s for reading. 70 degrees. 74 in philadelphia. cape mae is clear and 72 degrees. a clear view from center city. no sign of fog just yet. but with high humidity and temperatures falling, expect to see some spots develop this morning. we do have a southwesterly breeze. so the humidity will be increasing during the day. and look at this satellite. completely clear. sunshine will be bright. you'll need sun glasses to day. and you'll need to find a cool spot. this will be a hot one. 90 for camel back. look at bethlehem, 92 degrees. 95 in new hope. a high of 94 in moorstown. the shore, 85 at cape mae.

rehoboth, 85. go inland and there are the 90s popping up again. wilmington, low 90s. 93 for malvern. philadelphia up to 94 with bright sunny skies. back with a look at the showers when i come back in ten minutes. >> looks like the rule of thumb is to stay at the shore as long as can you this week f you're lucky enough to do that. let's get a check of area roads now looking at 295 with our first alert traffic reporter. jessica? >> we're on 75 right now. work zone right in here. lane restrictionrestrictions. we still have a 13 minute drive time southbound as we head to philadelphia or at the black horse pike from 38 up toward there. no problems. only about a 13 minute trip. you can see every lane moving along fine. if you're on the 42 freeway, you have to come home from the shore, you have to get to work this morning over the bridge into philadelphia northbound from 55 up towards the bridge.

congress is expected to spend the first days back in session debating the iran nuclear deal. most democrats support the agreement while most republicans oppose it. another big topic, a spending bill to keep the government open beyond september as a new budget year begins october 1st. a 4-year-old mississippi boy and his dog are back on safe ground this morning after falling into a well yesterday. this was the scene about 70 mile southwest of jackson. the emergency rescue took several hours after the boy and his dog fell down a 25-foot well. the hole was only about a foot and a half wide. that's i didn't think was difficult for them to get someone there down to him. they tried several times to hoist the boy up with a rope. he didn't know how to attach it to himself. they finally successfully saved him. there. more information could be released in the investigation of a plane crash that killed three people in north carolina. it happened yesterday about 80 miles north of charlotte. authorities say the plane took off in florida and was en route to greensboro, north carolina,

when it crashed into a rock quarry. the illinois police officer shot and killed in the line of duty last week was laid to rest yesterday. several hundred officers from all over the country attended the funeral for lieutenant joe gliniewicz. thousands of people looked on from the roadside and applauded adds the procession passed. gliniewicz was a 30 year veteran ott cuff of retirement from the police department north of chicago. people called him gi joe because of his commitment to his community. >> when we were growing up, we all knew joe as a hero. but now the nation knows he's a hero. >> officer glynn biiniewicz was and killed after he radioed in he was chasing three suspicious men on foot. the search continues for the suspects. awol wol co colorado woman o a police department yesterday

with a hug. she told police that she was very upset over the recent death of many officers across the country including that one in illinois. the department tweeted photos of the hug saying what a wonderful day to be working. after surviving a dangerous journey across land and sea, migrants and refugees are being welcomed in germany. in munich, refugees are arriving at the main train station every hour exhausted and relieved. more than 20,000 have arrived over the past three days. they were given clothes, food, and then they board buses across germany. nearly everyone it seems wants to help. >> i'm a human being. we're humans. and you see the situation. >> the arrivals have slowed. it show no signs of stopping.

millions are fleeing poverty. italy's top court reveals why they threw out the cases against amanda knox. there was no evident that they were there when meredith was murdered. the pair served almost four years in an italian prison after a lower court convicted nem 2009. >> she's a satisfied and happy to read this decision. at the same time, it's a very sad story. it's a sad story because meredith is no longer with us and this is a tragedy that nobody can forget. >> now the third person accused in that murder is serving a 16-year sentence after choosing a fast track trial. a wildfire that investigators think was intentionally set continues to burn in utah. officials say 100 acres are burning outside salt lake city. crews are having a tough time fighting this one because of the strong winds there making it difficult to contain the fire. no word on whether any structures are in danger at this

point or whether any evacuations have been ordered. all right. look at. this a group of bears have been breaking into homes in wyoming, in a wyoming community. they release the these photos. bears on the stairs there. exploring a family home. several families in the area have reported bear invasions over the past few weeks. residents say that bears active this time of year are sure sign that fall is around the corner. hopefully we'll see bears in this area then. >> hi. that's why i leave the honey outside every morning, absolutely. we don't want to layer up too much today. it's going to be a hot one. it's going to be into the 9 o's this afternoon. bad for weather. right now, it's more muggy and we're watching for some fog. that's clear skies over center city. 74 degrees. 79% humidity. already 4 degrees warmer than

yesterday. yesterday afternoon topped out at 90 degrees. clear skies at the shore. it will be another day in the 80s. it will be another beautiful day at the shore. day after labor day and tomorrow looking pretty good, too. humidity really elevated in wilmington. look at dover, 100%. i'd be surprised if we don't get areas of fog in potstown. the humidity is building. and as the temperatures come down, we'll likely see some spots of fog. right now coatsville is 70 degrees. 70 in trenton and toms river. camden, 71 and it's low 70s in glendora. not had hot yet but that will change in a hurry. no sign of any showers for today. you can see the line of showers to the west. our first chance of getting some of these is tomorrow afternoon. and then we'll get some steadier rainfall into thursday. that line is on the move by tomorrow morning.

so way off to the north and west. but later tomorrow, see some scattered clouds in the morning. look at tomorrow afternoon and into the evening. we could see the first showers and thunderstorms move into the area. and then it becomes even more likely for thursday. stand by for a hot and humid one before we get some relief later this week. i'll show you when that relief arrives with the seven day forecast, chris, in the next half hour. >> thank you, bill. 4:20. if you enjoy driving down the schuylkill expressway around this time of every morning, you should listen to nbc 10s first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. >> we're looking at the schuylkill. this is the only time of day you really can enjoy it because it's actually moving along. so as you can see right here around montgomery drive, no problems. we have 13-minute drive time. heading into the center city area, back to work you'll be okay. and if you're headed out the door on 202, pretty much the same story there. no problems or delays yet. you can see everything is green.

11 minutes at the most if you're headed northbound or southbound if 30 up towards the schuylkill expressway. currently no problems or delays for mass transit. new jersey transit is running on time. chris? >> the centers for disease control and prevention says the west nile virus is no longer a growing problem in the u.s. new research finds that while the disease is still an issue, the number of cases has remained stable. last year the cdc reported 2200 cases making that the most common mosquito borne illness in this country. there is no vaccine or specific treatment for west nile. there is a look at the cases here. there are ten in pennsylvania, six in new jersey and one in delaware. most people who are bitten by an infected mosquito never develop symptoms and less than 1% develop a serious neurological illness. the dentist who killed cecil the lion expected to be back at his practice in minnesota.
