be weeks away. with the latest nbc maris poll showing a close race between clinton and bernie sanders and reversal in new hampshire, clinton trailing sanders for the first time. >> we're coming after those republicans and their allies who would turn the clock back on america. >> reporter: clinton nearly lost her voice. >> i'm so happy to be back. >> reporter: in a new push to answer more questions about the private e-mail she used as secretary of state, clinton spoke with the associated press monday her second interview in four days. what i did was allowed. it was loud by the state department she said. adding the controversy has been a distraction certainly. but it hasn't in any way affected the plan for our campaign. clinton's next stop a sit down with ellen degeneres. jeb bush and joe biden said to appear on steven colbert's new

show. trump will visit jimmy fallon on friday. analysts say the campaign is at a turning point. >> voters begin looking at the race through a different lens. they start evaluating people. not just as candidates they might be interested in or have fun listening to but people who are potential president of the united states. >> reporter: this is when americans tune in. as far as hillary clinton's campaign reset her strategists are promising a new view of her, showing more humor and heart combat questions about her authenticity and her honesty. you rather be showing those things than telling them so we wait to see. >> you said that the vice president's decision could be a couple of weeks away. is there a date on the political calendar where it simply becomes too late. >> reporter: those close say what is that drop dead deadline. he could wait until november.

that said he's been told the beginning of october is a much more realistic deadline for him to be competitive. he's acknowledged enot there yet he wouldn't hesitate to run if he concludes he can launch a viable campaign, as the emotional energy to be a part of and as a close friend told me this weekend he may want to run he thinks he would make a electronic president but he has to gauge whether he has the fight in him to do it again and go up against hillary clinton. >> members of congress back from their recess, one of the things on the calendar there is the vote on the iran nuclear deal, the white house has put an awful lot of time and energy into this. you expecting a challenging congress? >> reporter: just this weekend the president picked up critical support from two more prominence political figures. colin powell called it a pretty good deal. the democratic national chairwoman, wasserman-schultz is on board. president obama has locked up

enough votes in congress basically with the democratic minority that he can block any efforts to veto this deal. in a lot of ways it's good to view it not as a victory for the president but as avoiding defeat. >> to that headline by pope francis. ahead of this month's visit to the u.s. today a new process is being unveiled to simplify the catholic church's procedure for marriage annulment. >> reporter: this announcement from rome is direct at couples whose marriages have truly broken down. essentially saying if a marriage separation has to happen the pope wants to make it less expensive, less need for lawyers, a change unlike any seen in three centurys is the way one church official just described it. pope francis building bridges ahead of his first visit to the u.s. reaching out to catholics whose marriages have faced challenges.

the catholic church announcing reform to make it easier to have a catholic marriage annulled as if it never happened. >> it reduces the bureaucratic, long bureaucratic process. it makes the process a whole lot simpler. >> reporter: the pope not changing the rules as encouraging greater forgiveness as he did last week on the divisive issue of abortion. any woman can be forgiven for abortion he said if she's contrite. and he famously asked who am i to judge about a gay priest. this month the pope will travel to cuba then flies to d.c., new york and philadelphia. millions of catholics are waiting to hear what he has to say to america. >> god loves you, god forgives you, you may have strayed far away but remember that the church is your mother she wants to give you a big hug. >> reporter: a pope who speaks through words and deeds letting children ride in his popemobile, washing the feet of prison

inmates and marrying couples. with a warm message. it's normal for married couples argue. never let the day end without first having made peace. and if a marriage doesn't work the catholic church is hoping with today's changes divorce can be avoided annulment within the church is less bureaucraty. a tricky balance he has to strike. he's not saying anything goes. but he says the church will welcome you with warm even if you haven't got everything right in your life. >> thank you very much. >> again the pope coming to new york, washington, d.c. and philadelphia later this month. let's turn to the kentucky clerk jailed for her refusal to issue same-sex marriage license. she's making a new bid for freedom today and her supporters are planning a major rally.

>> reporter: matt, good morning. kim davis' lawyers are appealing her contempt order and filed an emergency motion asking the governor to immediately free her from this jail. governor steve bashir says the entire issue is up to the court. davis the clerk has ignited a national firestorm by refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples citing her religious beliefs as a christian. on friday her deputies began issuing the licenses. over the holiday weekend her supporters gathered to call for her release. now today a larger rally is planned. and it's set to include republican presidential candidate mike huckabee. davis' lawyer said she's doing well behind bars and is passing the time by reading the bible. matt? >> gabe gutierrez on that story. thank you very much. >> emotional scene in illinois

on monday where thousands turned out for the funeral of slain fox lake police lieutenant joe gliniewicz. >> the father of four was shot and killed one week ago. >> that day like every other day joe put on his uniform and said send me. he was the kind of man that in the face of the anger would run towards it while others ran away. >> the suspects remain on the loose. investigators have said they recovered significant evidence from the crime scene. >> let's turn to natalie. she has the story of the morning. >> in the migrant crisis is becoming more volatile and getting worse in hungary where thousands of refugees are trying to get to germany. richard engel has the very latest. >> reporter: good morning. the hungarian government is continuing to take a hard-line. it's been rounding up migrants

but if the two players who seemingly targeted a ref are expecting forgiveness they have to explain why they did to what they did to more than a priest. this morning new fall out from the shot seen around the world. watch the referee get blind sided first one player tackles him from behind then a second diving in head first. it's called spearing the ref. today those two high school players are in a world of trouble. suspended from the team, from school and one criminal investigation and now police say the ref was targeted. >> two of they are teammates were ejected prior to the game. still, there's no excuse for this. >> reporter: social media is lighting up calling the hit ruthless, an assault. one calling for john jay high school to disband the school's football program. the school district says in a statement it will not tolerate this kind of behavior. and promises today it will

schedule a due process hearing, interviewing officials, coaches and students. attacks against referees have happened before. several years in sarasota, florida. watch as the player takes one down. the ref's collar bone was broken and he was eventually awarded a $275,000 settlement. 23 states have laws specifically protecting sports officials. experts say using those laws and other strong punishments will help. but the problem needs to be addressed before that. >> it's not too early to begin in high school so that these athletes who go on to cleaning professional sport already have the skills in place to manage anxiety, anger, even rage. >> reporter: the nfl referee's association is commenting on what it saw calling it inexcusable. at the next high school practice here beyond the drill there's a good bet that the coaches will

after weeks keeping out of the public eye. today craig melvin is outside dr. palmer's office in bloomington. craig, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning. dr. walter palmer will be returning to work at his office behind me for the first time since the world learned his name. there are a number of police officers here on hand just in case we're told. he will also be greeted by roughly a dozen signs that have been taped to the front of his office door, signs like these that read, justice for cecil and may you never00 again. ahead of his return, palmer spoke out to two journalists. for the first time dr. walter palmer agreed to answer questions without cameras about thunder that killed cecil the lion the beloved symbol of zimbabwe's wildlife. >> this is not a man who wanted to be in this setting, wanted the exposure that he has gotten and will continue to get. he want this to be over with. >> reporter: over the weekend palmer granted what he said will

♪ shining the spotlight on the homeless epidemic in this country. time out of mind follows george a man down on his luck played by richard gere. he's navigating his way through the streets of new york city searching for a place to sleep and a way to make sense out of his place in life. >> it's been a long time since i had a job. it's been many years. i'm too old to be hired. no one is going to hire me. not like i am. i'm just -- i'm really no good right now. >> richard gere, good morning. good to see you. >> hey, savannah. >> it took you 15 years to get here. took 15 years to get the movie made. >> 12, 15. it was a long time.

it was a script that was written in 1988 and, unfortunately, it still is quite relevant. >> as relevant as ever. shot in a very interesting way. from a distance which isn't a bad metaphor for the way we often deal with the homeless problem. >> two metaphors. it is a from a distance. we shot it on very long lenses because we didn't have any money, had a very short budget but 21 days to shoot this thing. the only way we could do it if i was out on the streets. we couldn't control the streets of new york. i was out for 21 days. only two people recognized me the whole time and i was in grand central station. the first day we shot we frankly didn't know what was going to happen. it's not a place that i would be standing on the corner of, frankly, in new york and just hanging there. but it was a very anxious day for all of us to see if this

would work. and i came out to the streets and stood there and i was in character and i looked like the guy and it was amazing to me that just the visual and the physicality of a guy on the street. people projected panhandler on me. and we did a show -- we're shooting digital so we had very long shots about 45 minutes. nobody recognized me. one of the busiest places in new york. >> i've been doing my research on you and i read a quote where you say -- >> i'm sorry. i'm really sorry. i really am sorry. >> you play the piano, for example. i read a quote where you said acmovie star is the least interesting thing about you. which of course begs the question what's the most interesting thing about you? >> well it was fun playing the piano. it was actually -- i don't know if i should be giving away these things. >> you better remain silent.

77 degrees. that's four degrees warmer than yesterday. yesterday we were up to 90 degrees. temperatures on the rise in northeast philadelphia. it's already 80 this morning. >> the haze in part of south jersey is courtesy of this. firefighters working to contain a forest fire right now. skyforce 10 flew over it this morning burning through the woods of manchester township and woodland township where ocean and burlington counties meet. it started yesterday afternoon and has burned more than a thousand acres so far. crews say it could take a few days to bring it under control. the good news is right now officials say there is no threat to any property. a bar fight spilled out on the street in philadelphia leading to gunfire. two injuries and charges against three people. police say the fight started after a woman stole a purse. a man pulled a gun and shot the woman and map. a man is in critical condition, the woman stable. officers chased down the suspected shooter and arrested him. police tell us all three will

and, you know, i think that scott cooper the director did a great job, delivering this, you know, as you said ripped from the headlines story. >> we were talking about the intersection of the fbi and whitey bulger and you play the fbi special agent in charge. sometimes that intersection was a criminal relationship. can you explain that? >> i think the fbi had a real agenda, kind of based on partly on things like the godfather to go after the italian mafia when we thought about the mafia that's what we think, organized crime. this was a guyçr who was operag kind of in the irish mob and so the fbi made a deal with whitey to kind of look the other way if he would give them information on the italians. and i play a character who is -- he's kind of a combination, one of the few characters in the movie whose not an actual guy, a

combination of a lot of guys that were head of the fbi field office at the time, and he sort of the voice of reason in a way in terms of the fbi. and this loose canon played by joe edgerton who is taking matters in his own hands and i'm the guy wait hang on, are you sure this will work. >> a phenomenal case. johnny depp is unrecognizable as whitey buller. s on core worthy performance. you joke you can now shut down your six degree -- >> i know. a lot of people in this movie, worked with a lot of people p.m. it just blew up. >> you go to boston or that area everyone knew and knows about whitey bulger, the legend that was the infamy that came along with it. how much did you know growing up in philly about whitey bull zbher >> i didn't know anything when i was a kid in philly.

when we did "mystic river," i knew a guy who told me the story. he was thinking that -- he was basically saying this would make a great movie and started to tell me the story. this was before whitey was found in santa monica. i was kind of familiar with it. and it is a -- it's a great story. one of the thing interesting about it is you see a lot of times the parallels with these gangsters. i've been watching that show about pablo escobar. same kind of robin hood they are giving back to the community and a lot of support amongst the people for these guys a lot of times. >> absolutely. kevin bacon, fascinating. such a great film. taking a look at the headlines. amanda knox says she's deeply grateful that the top italian court has declared her innocence. explaining why it threw out her murder convict honor. the court said there was no proof knox was at the scene when her roommate was killed in 2007. they said there were glaring errors in the case against her and called it flawed and hastily constructed. a new study finds stress can have a big impact on military families. researches looked at pregnant patients at fort bragg's army medical center and found women whose spouses were deployed were twice as likely to give birth early and post-partum depression was twice as high.
