11:18 am
lithium powered smoke alarm on every floor. if you don't, you can call 311, the fire department and red cross will come out and install one free of charge. it's critical. the second most important thing is an escape plan. do you know how to get out of every room of your home? >> not just your house, but every room. >> every room in your home. two ways out of every room. the critical thing is, a, to design this plan and, b, to practice it with your children and the seniors in your home. pick a spot outside your home to get to that's safe for your family as a meeting point. people say, i forgot and go back into the fire. worst mistake you can make. when you get out, stay out and wait for the fire department. >> we did a story earlier this year, last year, where kids escaped a fire because they had just practiced climbing out of the window and getting out of the house. that's really important. let's talk about emergency kids. a lot of people don't even think about an emergency kit, but if
11:19 am
you have one, you should have one, and what should be in it? >> september is a good time to check your emergency kit. you want one on every floor of your home. in it you want a gallon of water, a gallon for each person for three days. that's three gallons of water for each person. you also want a gallon of water for each pet you have. just one gallon will last a pet three days. think about nonperishable food. my favorite is peanut butter. peanut butter and rice cakes. sounds good but it's good. it's nonperishable food. you want to put games in there for your kids, books, puzzles, crayons, things that don't require electricity. a battery-powered radio so that you can get information about the conditions outside the home. so, this is what we call a stay in place kit. you want to be able to stay in your home for three days until first responders can come. you also want what we call a go kit. a go kit is something you keep by the bedroom door, where you
11:20 am
can grab it. there's a copy of your life insurance in there, your homeowners insurance, things that if they were lost would be difficult to replace. so, you have this go kit and you grab it and you get out of the house. >> the red cross is also involved in the preparation for the pope's visit coming up at the end of the month. >> yes. >> tell us about that, and how you folks are getting ready and your preparation. >> well, we are intimately involved with the pope's visit. very excited about it. in fact, if people want to help, they can still volunteer at redcross.org. what we're doing is several things. the most important is family reunification. so, if you get separated from your children or the seniors in your family, we will help you get reconnected. we have family reunification centers stationed throughout what i call the pope's festival ground. we're there. we're also taking care of all the volunteers who are coming into the city. so, we'll be housing them and making sure they'll be safe. we'll be providing first aid and medical assistance to the
11:21 am
hospital teams that will be there. we will also continue to respond to the three to five fires a night that occur in the city of philadelphia during this time. so, we're very involved. >> you guys do such good work. we appreciate it. never had this-t on this show when you weren't wearing a red dress. it's always nice. judge hughes, thank you very much. >> pleasure to see you. >> the red cross has free apps and materials to help you create your own emergency plan. by the way, for more information on that, just head over to our website at nbc10.com or check out the nbc10 app. we appreciate your time with us and gives us these tips. it's helpful. >> thank you so much. always nice to see you. shark attack on the rise. the result of a brand new study confirming the fears of many beachgoers this summer. we'll have that straight ahead.
