92 in philadelphia at the moment, close to 80 at the shore. we've had now 37 days of 90 plus in philadelphia. that's the 12th most on record. we're not even close to the record. that's 55 days. never going to get there this year. still feels like it's 97 degrees out there. we have some showers around right now, especially near cape may, a lot more on the way tomorrow, the timing on that in the seven-day. >> hot tickets, it took only a few minutes for the online lottery to run out of the allotted 10,000 free tickets at the festival of families later this month. keith jones was one of the thousands who couldn't get a pass. he's joining us now. >> i tried, had no luck. tickets sold out in two minutes according to the website. the lottery went on line two hours ago for the festival of families. on saturday september 26th. when pope francis will talk to

johnson will meet with residents to answer questions. it takes place at the philadelphia high school for the creative and performing arts. the nbc10 news app is your official guide to help you navigate through the pope's visit. other news, investigators pointing fingers at the pilots of a gulfstream jet that crashed last year, killing the owner of the philadelphia inquirer and six others. the private plane crashed during takeoff. the flight crew failed to do a preflight safety checkless, and didn't notice the elevators were locked which meant it couldn't get airborne. investigators believe the flight crew routinely ignored checklists and issued a safety recommendation in light of the accident. >> this accident was preventable. it shows us the importance of following procedures each and every time a plane takes off. >> seven people died including

louis katz who had just purchased the philadelphia inquirer. life in prison, that's the plea from the woman accused of keeping mentally disabled adults locked in a payment for days. linda westin pleaded guilty today in federal court. the possible den people ailty is now off the table. prosecutors agreed to a life term. four adults were found chained in her basement in 2011. westin kidnapped them, held them prisoner so she could steal their social security money. two of westin's codefendants are already pleading guilty, two others are awaiting trial. a philadelphia based company plans to build a $70 million research facility at the navy yard. they will move 190 jobs there, and it says that number could double over the next five plus years. they make liquid and powder coatings. the project will be finished in 2017. help arrived just in time for dozens of firefighters about to be out of a job in atlantic city.

bob menendez and cory booker announced a $21.5 million grant. it's designed to keep 85 firefighters on the job. the men were set to be laid off after four casinos closed last year. charcoal is to blame for a forest fire that scorched nearly 1,000 acres in new jersey's pine baron. authorities tell us it's too early to say if any criminal charges will be filed. a final farewell to a philadelphia police officer killed in a hit and run crash last month. the viewing was held for lamar poole in west philadelphia. he was offduty riding his motorcycle when he was hit and killed august 30th. this man hit him with his vehicle and took off. a tow truck driver followed him

court in front of a judge today. and they are accused of meeting folks outside of the prisons and making deals for cash. deals for $500, $1,000, $1500, deals that could be quite costly. . there are fences and barbed wire separating inmates from the outside, someone trusted got contraband inside. >> prison safety depends on prison guards acting with honesty and integ pretty. >> six current and former guards accused of smuggling in oxy con ton bills and sell phones for inmates. a tool that the philadelphia prison's commissioner tells us endanger the public. >> they can use them to transfer messages, intimidate witnesses. further the criminal enterprises if they chose to do so. there's a number of dangers. >> he tells us the charges grew out of an investigation into a

growing amount of contraband in prisons. >> my clients are charged with bringing a cell phone and drugs into the prison. >> jack mcmahon is an attorney representing defendant and former guard mark thompson whose mother is a philadelphia police officer. >> what is the family's reaction? >> any mother, whether you're a philadelphia police officer or not, is going to be upset when their son gets indicted federally. probably doubly so when you're a law enforcement officer and good law enforcement officer like his mother. >> the accused guards could face decades in prison. >> we hope the message is clear. the philadelphia prison system will have no place to use the power of their decision to engage in powerful acts. >> what prison procedures may change as a result of all of this. i found out something that may surprise you. the prisons are not in his word saturated with video cameras. they are hoping to change that.

live in center city, lauren mayk. nbc10 news. a rally this evening in atlantic city. marking one year since a local man was shot and killed by police. relatives of sean brown say there's been a lack of answers and transparency from law enforcement. brown was armed with a handgun during a confrontation. brown's family believes the shooting was unjustified, they filed a federal lawsuit today. the prosecutor's office had no further comment. decades of storm damage have taken its toll on the board walk. some sections left unsafe, part of it collapsed into the water. that's about to change. demolition crews are removing what was a dilapidated unusable stretch of board walk. the $50 million project mostly funded by the federal government will add a protective seawall to make the board walk hole again. the finished product is expected to be strong enough to pass the

test of time. >> a seawall at there end, a rock wall at the other end, and the board walk is going to be on the land side of that, the nor'easter still hit the city pretty bad. we don't want to build a board walk and lose it at the next nor'easter. >> the project will be finished late next year or in early 2017. summer has continued around here, we have another day in the 90s today, and near record heats in philadelphia, one degree shy of a record set in 1884. a couple places did tie or set records. some thunderstorms tonight. we got more activity coming tomorrow, that's when the heaviest of the rain is on the way. we have mostly cloudy skies now in the philadelphia area, not quite as cloudy as it is in cape may, where the rain is about to move in. 92 degrees, feels like 97.

that south-southwest wind continues to keep it very muggy. we've had three days in a row, 90 plus now, that makes it heat wave number 6. 94 yesterday, 93 today, nowhere near that during the day tomorrow. places will get into the 80s, we don't really think any place will get to 90 degrees tomorrow. mostly because of clouds and rain that's coming in. the southerly wind is bringing in the sea breeze. it still feels like 97 in philadelphia, 94 in trenton, 92 in reading. and we did set a record in allentown today in the mid-90s, you can see that shower near cape may, it's weakening, at least it's finally moving into the southern portion of cape may county. most of the rest of the area not seeing any rain, until you go back into the western half of pennsylvania. some of that is what's going to be coming later tonight and tomorrow. as we go through the evening

hour by hour, you'll see some isolated showers or storms developing. it really increases after midnight. as we go into tomorrow morning, there's more activity around, even some models have it wetter by tomorrow morning's rush, especially in portions of delaware, as we go through the rest of the day, you can see some of these heavy storms, they're not going to be moving very much either. some areas could get some localized flooding out of it, the ground is hard from the lack of rain, you get a lot more runoff that way. look at all of this at 6:00 tomorrow, temperatures knocked down into the 70s. and so it could be pretty rough tomorrow afternoon, it's not going to be in the 90s, by 8:00, some areas north and west are in the 60s, 60s after 90s today, how about that for a change in one day. the dryer air comes in friday morning. temperatures are down close to 60 degrees, we have dry

conditions. the threat tracker showing the greatest threat for any kind of problems tomorrow in the flood department. some threats of lightning, but the main area is of concern. wouldn't be widespread, it would be localized. warm and humid with showers increasing after midnight, 73 degrees for the low. big temperature contrast from north to south. periods of rain, some of it heavy, some thunderstorms, localized flooding with that, it could be continuing into early friday, especially parts of new jersey. then we're drying out, humidity is going down, the next system comes in, builds up the humidity saturday, storms saturday night and into sunday morning, and then some really really nice weather next week. the eagles are just days away from the season opener, and the key piece of the offense returns today.
