officer was struck by an early model pontiac, maybe a year 2000, a grand prix, red color possibly with a green trunk or green hood. this officer is a 12 year veteran of the police force and as detectives search for that hit and run driver, we are told again he is expected to be okay. he coincidentally works for the accidents investigation division of the police department. he is being held here at chester crozer just for observation. randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. to another developing story now. also in chester, we have learned a deadly shooting inside a home was connected to a child porn investigation. fbi agents killed the man inside this morning. nbc 10 was on the scene at 6:00 a.m. nbc 10's lauren mayk has worked this story all day. she is joining us live tonight from chester with the latest. >> reporter: good evening. things have gotten a little busier out here just within the last hour and a half.

a team from fbi headquarters has arrived here and it will be their job to review what happened here because this is a shooting involving an agent. they also brought evidence boxes into that house today. the house where gunfire shook the neighborhood. >> i heard some people say get on the ground, get on the ground and i heard pop pop pop pop pop pop. >> reporter: she looked out her window. >> they was running up the house that they at, then they ran across the street. >> reporter: the commotion on highland avenue is focused on the yellow house here. it's where something went wrong and sources tell nbc 10 news agents were executing a search warrant connected with a child pornography investigation. shots were fired as agents entered. >> kind of scary. because i don't know what happened. >> reporter: neighbors tell us a family lived there for years. a mother and father with an adult son. >> they was real nice. >> reporter: she saw the mom and dad come out and shot this video. >> i heard the shots and seen

the flashes through the window. >> reporter: until all this unfolded, gunfire, a swarm of agents and a day-long search. neighbors say nothing here seemed out of the ordinary. >> you really don't know who lives next to you. you really don't know your neighbors. >> reporter: three people were taken into custody today and no word yet on any charges or on an identification for the person killed here today. i'm lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. to our weather now. the rain's gone, at least for now, but you're still going to need your um blael this weekend. nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz joining us with the first alert forecast. we haven't had any rain over a weekend since june? >> yeah. that is true. at the shore, it has been 22 straight weekend days without any rain. but things are going to change as we go into tomorrow. the streak had to end eventually.

year. nearly 3,000 people lost their lives from new york, pennsylvania and washington. president obama and the first lady held a moment of silence outside the white house at 8:46 this morning, the time the plane crashed into the pentagon. nbc 10's keith jones is joining us with a look at other local events. >> everyone remembers where they were that morning 14 years ago when the planes hit the twin towers. today all across our area, people paid their respects and stopped to reflect. dozens gathered near the crash site of united 93 near shanksville. 40 passengers and crew died when the plane crashed there. if you don't remember what happened on board that plane, passengers overtook the hijackers and stormed the cockpit. they likely saved thousands of lives in washington, d.c. nbc 10 in new castle county for the rotary club of brandywine

service. it was held among flags along route 202 that people sponsored in honor of friends and family in the military or first responders. the rotary had 120 flags sponsored this year. all the money they raised went to the delaware center for homeless veterans. different towns and departments came up with ways to remember their fallen heroes. this fire truck, for instance, was set up in milford, bucks county. 343 firefighters died on september 11th. happening right now in doylestown, there's a dedication happening for a 9/11 memorial sculpture which includes an i beam from the world trade center. keith jones, nbc 10 news. >> remembering the victims of september 11th, tonight a comprehensive look on "nbc nightly news" with lester holt after this broadcast. two weeks from tomorrow, pope francis arrives in philadelphia. the papal visit sure to have a ripple effect in other counties.

leaders have spent months planning his visit. nbc 10's deanna durante is live in conshohocken with what we learned today about extra security in the county. >> reporter: not just extra security but also other safety measures for all of the visitors that will be here. here along the schuykill river trail, emergency management officials here, many people may get on the trail and try to walk night the city. if it's hot that day they fear they won't have enough bottled water and urge people to bring flashlights should you decide to take this route to leave the city. those are just some of the things they discussed today. >> the county has taken a number of precautions to make sure we can treat a very large number of patients if need be. the center of that will be at the hospital. >> reporter: the doctor will not greet the pontiff but will be staffing an emergency medical response unit, one of many smaller vehicles used county-wide to get to people who need help.

>> gator type vehicles throughout the area with the long beds in the event we have some emergency care on the highways, that ambulances can't get to. >> reporter: the pope will stay in lower merion. the national guard s.w.a.t. teams and uniformed and plain clothes police will surround the area. roads will be closed but across the river the expressway closures will send traffic on secondary roads through the county. just because the pope is in town doesn't mean life will come to a halt. the police chief told the group other previously scheduled events are still taking place. >> we are estimating crowds of 20,000, 40,000. >> reporter: these aren't people who want to see the pope but fans of the hit tv show "the walking dead." the convention is the same weekend as the papal visit in oakes. >> it will be very difficult to get in and get out. we don't know what exactly the magnitude's going to be. >> reporter: planners from across the area are here talking about the what ifs. what if grid lock has people without food and water? what if people don't have medications? >> they drill, they plan, they prepare. we will be ready in montgomery county for the holy father.

>> reporter: where we are standing now for walking distance or runners or bikers is about seven miles to the philadelphia museum of art. emergency management officials say the national guard along with a number of police officers will be here to make sure if people take this route, they get home safely. deanna durante, nbc 10 news. >> here's something of a surprise. with two weeks to go, there are still thousands of hotel rooms available in philadelphia. this evening, the city is making it a point to let people know about it with a new rallying cry. >> one more time. will you be there? >> i'll be there! >> that's the new cry. this was the scene inside the radisson warrick thiss afternoo. there are concerns hotel rooms aren't selling. there are still about 3,000 available. the mayor says the hotels didn't know what to expect and neither did people coming to see the

pope. >> maybe some potential customers may not have necessarily thought that there would be hotel rooms available here in philadelphia. >> the mayor says some hotels are dropping prices now and offering incentives. activity has started to pick up. get all the latest information on the nbc 10 news app. other news now. the search for a missing pilot off the coast of atlantic city has been suspended. tonight the u.s. coast guard stopped its search after that small plane crashed yesterday seven miles off the coast. we have also learned today there was no radio communication from the plane for the final two hours of the flight. that flight left michigan bound for atlantic city and just a short time after the plane went down the coast guard spotted debris in the ocean. the chester county spca will take over wilmington's animal control for the next nine months. the first state animal center terminated its contract with wilmington and three other counties in the state last month. the state of delaware will take over all animal control functions next july.

a woman sound asleep inside her home when thieves take her purse and car in west kensington. check out this surveillance video released today of the suspects getting into that suv and driving off. the woman says she woke up wednesday morning around 7:00 and found her back door and window open and her suv is still missing. next on "nbc 10 news at 6:00" the manhunt for eric frein lasted weeks. the case generated national attention. this weekend marks one year since the murder of a state trooper. tonight his father talks only to nbc 10. plus it a's a sight you don want to see. glenn? we just had a brief break from the rain. we will get some wet weather this weekend. the first alert forecast is next.

tomorrow marks exactly a year since two pennsylvania state troopers were shot outside the barracks, leading to a man hunt that lasted almost two months before eric frein was captured. communities in the poconos are still trying to get back to normal. nbc 10's doug shimell has the story as we mark one year later. >> every night when i go to work, i say i love you, we miss you. >> reporter: it's a date on

their calendar they can't remove. >> i think we are holding our own but then now that it's getting closer to the day, we have our moments. >> reporter: the sniper style murder of state police corporal brian dickson and the wounding of trooper alex douglas. hundreds of police in a seven-week manhunt for eric frein that uncovered his detailed notes about the shooting. steve heddle was in the middle of it. >> with police officers being taken down at random, it's always fresh in your mind. it doesn't seem like it's been a year. >> reporter: the manhunt in towns like mountainhall canceled school and the halloween parade. it's taken a year to reassure the tourists. >> once the weather clears out and gets cooler, and the leaves start to turn, hopefully people will be back and we can start into a normal fall.

as for trooper douglas, we are told he's still recovering from his injuries. police say frein shot douglas and dickson at random. philadelphia's division of licenses and inspections is again reaching out the owner of a trouble property at south philly after scaffolding at the site blocked neighbors at their front door. the scaffolding and brickwork is only the latest chapter in the neighborhood's fight to get the property repaired at 17th and christian. residents say they have jumped through every bureaucratic hoop including dozens of calls to l & i and even an attempt to take control of the property in court. we counted 20 violations in 1700 christian street's history and still for neighbors, there has been no resolution. >> i'm ready to move. i'm ready to say good-bye to philadelphia. >> how long are you expecting to have this scaffolding up? >> as long as it takes these guys to complete the walls and the bricks. probably the next three weeks. >> that property owner insists he's hoping to turn the parcel into a community jewel but for

now, his only permit is for repairs, not renovations. l & i tells us it issued violations and fines. they even had the city solicitor take the owner to court. we're still getting heavy rain at this time yesterday. we got a bit of a break, not a very long one. dry start to the weekend but we have showers and storms in the forecast for at least part of the weekend, then a lot of next week if not all of next week, lot of sunshine. we have seen a lot of sunshine in the second half of the day today. 81 degrees now in philadelphia. only five miles an hour winds, six degrees warmer than it was yesterday when it was still raining. tomorrow, we are not going to get as much rain as what we had yesterday, but there still is a flood threat because of all the rain we did have yesterday. the lightning threat is higher than yesterday, as is the high wind threat. we will have to monitor these

conditions during the next 24 hours or so. the temperatures are in the upper 70s to low 80s for the most part. we are seeing more of a northeast wind. it was a northwest wind earlier. and we have seen a lot of dry weekends this summer. since the fourth of july, we have highlighted all the friday, saturdays and sundays. nine weekends in a row without any rain in philadelphia and ten weekends in a row at the jersey shore without rain. okay? so we can deal with this. it's after labor day, too. there are the clouds coming through most of new jersey this afternoon. from yesterday's storm that's moving offshore. and now here's the next one. not nearly as strong as what we saw yesterday. there are some showers in ohio. as we go through the night tonight, it's dry, we start to get a flow out of the south tomorrow and that will increase

the showers threat, even by noon tomorrow we could see some showers. this is 2:00 in the afternoon, some of this could be pretty heavy, again with localized flooding mostly because it's so wet yesterday. into the afternoon, you see yellow and red areas, possible showers and storms even into tomorrow evening. then we tend to dry out during the day on sunday, just a chance of a shower in the afternoon. so most if not all of sunday looks dry. now, how much rain is going to fall? future weather computer showing us an inch of rain or so in parts of the area and after four, five, six inches of rain in some spots yesterday, that could be enough to cause a little flooding. chance of a shower on sunday, nowhere near as wet as saturday. then we dry on monday, breezy and cool and look at the sunshine next week. every single day. then the temperature looks like it may go up every single day
