right now at 6:00. new security concerns for the pope's visit as we're just 13 days away from his arrival in philadelphia. good evening, i'm denise nakano. the chairman of the house homeland security committee expressed concern about security. nbc 10's doug shemp has more. >>. >> that seems to be a recurring source of worry for law enforcement. then again, nobody in law enforcement wants to keep this pope from being the pope. >> had the pope coming soon, there's always concern about

lone wolf attacks. >> reporter: when the morning talk shows got around to security for the pope's visit to new york, philadelphia and d.c. there was a recent worry mentioned. >> we're monitoring very closely threats against the pope as he comes into the united states. we have disrupted one particular case. in particular. >> reporter: but he gave no detail and local officials wanted to know was the case they allegedly disrupted in philadelphia. just last friday, jefferson hospital was evacuated after an empty silver pressure cooker was left on a bench outside. and police say a suspicious brown bag left near episcopal hospital was filled with paper. the texas congressman says homeland security is very aware of what hosting a people's pope will mean. >> he's a very passionate man. he likes to get out with the people and with that comes a large security risk. >> reporter: well, as for what

the congressman mccall is referring to. a source tells nbc in washington that a man was apparently picked up by authorities but not specifically mentioned what city after he was heard saying he wanted to do things to the pope. he was bought in for a mental health evaluation. but authorities found no evidence of a plot or plan. live along the parkway, i'm doug shimell, nbc 10 news. a big surprise coming up for a local family. they're going to see the pope in a way no one else will. we're hearing from them and finding out why they were chosen for a special honor. there are a lot of traffic and parking changes with the pope's visit. check on how they'll impact you with the nbc 10 news app. philadelphia leaves another sports legend. moses malone died suddenly at the age of 60. he was part of the 76ers championship team in 1983. his body was found in a norfolk hotel room after failing to show up for a celebrity golf

tournament. doctors believe he died in his sleep. we have more on the passing of malone and the legacy he leaves behind. danny? >> he was the first player to go pro out of high school and became a two-time mvp, three-time. 12-time all-star and named one of the nba's 50 greatest players. he was known as the missing piece to the 76ers championship team. he traded for malone to the houston rockets. he was known as the chairman of the board. the lakers had the championship in 1983. malone is famously predicted the sixers would tweak their way to the playoffs. they lost one game during that run. he averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds per game in 19 nba sooerns. 76ers ceo scotto neil released a statement. moses holds a special place in our hearts and will forever be

especially to the north and west. 65 at this hour in lancaster, 69 in philadelphia. 69 also in millville and 67 in atlantic city. adding on top of that, we have a breeze out there. we're seeing winds out of the northwest. that's a cooling wind. we're seeing winds over 10 miles per hour in many spots up to 13 miles per hour in reading and lancaster. 18 miles per hour in wilmington. by 7:00, mostly cloudy skies, 67. we're going to continue to see the temperatures dropping. by 9:00, 65 and 62 by 11:00. some spots dropping into the 40s tonight. we'll talk more about that and sunshine returning in the seven-day. we'll look at that too in a few minutes. new information about a hit and run involving a chester police officer on a motorcycle. the officer has been released from the hospital. he was hit by a car on friday and thrown up to 40 feet in the air off his bike. the search for that driver continues. and in north philadelphia an update to this massive water

main break last night that caused 15 million gallons of water to gush on to the street. it opened just a couple hours ago. no main repairs have started as the focus was getting the road back open. crews say tomorrow they'll assess exactly which repairs need to be made. we've also learned a nearby u-haul facility was substantially flooded in the basement. a pickup truck crashed overnight left a 17-year-old dead. it happened in new britain township. four teenagers were in the pickup truck at the time of the crash. one of them was seriously injured. the other two are expected to be okay. authorities are waiting to hear whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. just in the past two hours, phoenix area police announced the arrest of three teenagers in a series of highway shooting scares. the teenagers are accused of using a slingshot to mimic freeway shootings that have terrorized drivers for weeks

now. today, police said that would be -- the arrests do not mark a resolution for the investigation. there have been 11 shootings on one interstate alone since late august. the teens are accused of projectiling objects at pedestrians and cars to mimic those attacks. turning to decision 20167. republican senator pat toomey made an announcement saying he will run for reelection. he's pitching himself as someone in congress who gets things done. toomey is so far unopposed for the republican nomination. at least three democrats say they're running for the party's nomination. the surprise of a lifetime. one northeast philadelphia family goes to church and gets a jaw-dropping gift. a little boy who beat cancer is now inspiringi"br others. his mission still ahead.

taking a live look at rittenhouse square in center city. minutes ago, a public service began to celebrate rosh hashanah. they're commemorating the jewish high holy day. in the hour before the service, a band played a free concert and all three clergy members performed. earlier today, the largest environmental festival took place at head house square. thousands came out for green fest philly. it's put on by the air council. there were ecofriend i arts and crafts and a sustainable brewed bjerregaard en. it was the largest event yet. we had to dodge a few raindrops. now we're seeing the return of sunshine as early as monday

a northeast philadelphia family will have the chance of a lifetime to see pope francis up close. a surprise announcement was made today at st. christopher's parish church and monique braxton was there. >> it is my pleasure to announce today, the family will -- >> i'm so blessed and humbled sniemtd and very grateful. >> a teary-eyed bernadette is very happy their family will welcome pope fran stois philadelphia. >> i feel like meeting him is a blessing. >> her first blessing was meeting her husband rick on a blind date in 1992. now their three children, ages 9 to 12, will join them as part of a once in a lifetime experience
