>> al: third and 14. dallas with two time-outs. the giants at the 20. manning going empty. flag is thrown. dallas was offside, the pass is caught by odell beckham. and the cowboys were offside. came across the line. free play. exploited by the end of this thing, it is going to be first and goal. >> cris: just so splart mart by
11:32 pm
manning. >> referee: offsides, defense numb beer 90. penalty is declined. result of the play first down. >> cris: so now you have no risk involved in this one. you take your shot. there's the rookie right there. byron jones. beautiful job by odell to get right around him. i wonder if eli throws that ball if they don't get the end to jump offsides because that was a tight throw. beautifully thrown ball down to protect his receiver. there he is. whereed to see him. >> al: marcus lawrence jumping. critical penalty. of course the turnovers the whole story. three tonight. jennings is the running back. from are the 4. jennings plows his way to the 1. if if you're the cowboys right now i know you make it a two-possession game, but where do you go here? take a time-out.
11:33 pm
>> cris: you got to choice, you got to keep them out of the end zone, hold them to a field goal here. >> al: second down and goal. recap. here's dominic rodgers-cromartie on the end of the path. on the ensuing opportunity, escobar for the touchdown. one-yard pass to witten brought them back to within three. manning, mcadoo and coughlin, tom in his 12th season. one year for every grandchild. his 12th is on the way. >> cris: everybody had completely written off the new york giants. they did not look good in preseason, things were falling apart, they had key injuries but they had tom coughlin. when you have tom coughlin in huge games, i think the new england patriots would agroeeag you better be careful. >> al: he's been to a few. second and goal.
11:34 pm
bunched up at the goal line. jennings. >> cris: there is plenty of time here. we saw this game end this way in new york last year. giants go down. take the lead. you think it's over, and then tony romo goes all the way back down the field to dez bryant. make them kick this field goal, they've got a shot. >> cri . >> al: they have no dez bryant on the other side but that didn't matter on that last drive. eli comes in on third down and goal. jennings.
11:35 pm
the tailback. whitlock the fullback. beckham in motion. play action. rolling under pressure, he has to throw that one out of the back of the end zone. so they are able to hold him to a field goal attempt. still a one-possession game. no time-outs when they get the ball back. and on fourth down, manning's looking over to the bench. this is an interesting call. if you want to kick a field goal, think you have to. >> cris: i think you do. >> al: but even if you don't get it, you make dallas start at its own 1 yard line. but then again you got to make them get a touchdown here. >> cris: the decision to throw that football right there cost you noanother 40 seconds so now you have a real opportunity. i was thinking they were going to be down under a minute when they got the ball back.
11:36 pm
>> al: they forced dallas to go all the way down the field with no time-out with 94 seconds remaining on the clock. >> cris: it's interesting, barry church was all over the receiver down the field on that play. and if eli had opted to throw that one a little closer, i wonder if they would have gotten the pass interference call. watch this right here. there is a lot of contact. there's a lot more than what dominique rodgers-cromartie saw. they're down the field. if he hums that thing right over the head of daniel fells right there, he might have gotten that call. but obviously uncatchable and no flag.
11:37 pm
>> al: 26-20, cowboys will have to go 80 yards. >> cris: that's a touchback. >> al: romo tonight, 31 out of 39 for 284. two touchdowns in those two big interceptions. >> cris: huge decision to throw the football right there. you want to be aggressive, you want to do that, but, boy, that extra 35 seconds plays in large right now. >> al: that's a hopper that's going to be fielded up at the 7 yard line. that is tyler patmon, the defensive back. and patmon will get out of bounds at the 28 yard line. so it's 72 yards for tony romo. the cowboys still have dez bryant in the locker room. >> cris: now we're going to find out a lot about steve spagnuolo, the new defensive coordinator who is the old defensive
11:38 pm
coordinator who put a ring on his finger as a world champion. how does he play this one? >> al: start with williams going out to the right side. street who's taking bryant's place to the left. you've got beasley in a slot to the left. and witten as well. dunbar is the back. dunbar makes the catch. dunbar into giants territory! to the 49 yard line. cowboys also to the line of scrimmage. that's a gain of 23. >> cris: that's your best receiving running back against their middle linebacker. took advantage. >> al: four-man rush. tony with a dump-off. that's caught on the run. this is dunbar again from the 32 yard line. tackle by casillas.
11:39 pm
>> cris: tony romo master full so far. that was a little darty throughout there as he stepped up. >> al: 46, 45 and going down on first down. romo in the pocket. witten to the 19 yard line. unga makes the stop. tony wants witten to get lined up on the left side. >> cris: a lot of quarterbacks want to spike the ball here. not tony romo. he's got them on their heels and he wants it to stay that way. >> al: 22 seconds. romo looking over the middle and incomplete, into traffic. beasley was the intended receiver. quartet of giants surrounded him. 17 seconds. second down. >> cris: 17 seconds that would not have been there had they run ball on the other end. you have to be careful.
11:40 pm
you catch this ball in the middle of the field and you've got to really sprint to get off another one. >> al: sprint to spike it. the clock at 3. the outside caught, out of bounds. that stops the clock at 13. terrance williams. >> cris: now i would be very uncomfortable throwing to the middle of the field. usually 15, 16 seconds is what it takes. i'm not saying you can't complete it and still have a shot, but i'm taking shots at the end zone now because i think you can get obviously at least two. >> al: it's third down. third and two and 13 seconds as
11:41 pm
romo changes up. giants defense, normal pressure on the left side, he drops the ball, throws, caught -- wynn! touchdown! that is just crazy. dropped it. picked it up. six plays, 72 yards. made it look easy. >> cris: tony romo's taken a lot of heat for not playing in the clutch. just like he was in december last year, nearly flawless. guess where he went? right after the rookie inside linebacker with his veteran. >> al: now the anything but automatic extra point with the
11:42 pm
new rule to get dallas the lead. bailey -- and he does. well, tony romo has had as many excruciating losses as anybody. he's had some dramatic wins as well. >> cris: the snap to romo really hit him in the hands. he just dropped it, probably looking down the field. but the prohe text, as it's been all night long, just so good. and there's where probably you missed jon beason the most. jon beason would have fully understood where that ball was going and there's no reason as the middle linebacker to back into the end zone because jason witten's not going to stop anywhere past the end line. he just went down there and turned around. it could not have been easier so they start the drive attacking the young middle linebacker and they finish it off the same way. unbelievable. >> al: eight catches tonight, 60
11:43 pm
yards for witten. cowboys with seven seconds left. holding on. will win a game, losing the turnover battle 3-0. not having bryant for most of the game. >> cris: i tell you, you have to give some credit to scott len happ linehan. they suggest plays but it is really on tony romo and what a feel romo had for that drive. >> al: meanwhile, giants have beckham deep hoping he can return it. tries to leap for the catch and can't. they'll have one play from the 20 yard line. maybe two. they've got a time-out at their disposal obviously. >> cris: once again, a decision to not run from the 1 yard line
11:44 pm
is going to be widely discussed. >> al: and a chance to take a lot of time off the clock and they let that one go by the boards. cowboys with a cover seven. that's dropped. four second. that was vereen. >> cris: you know, i know it is hindsight now, but if you could have thought about it, the right play for eli manning in that situation, if he didn't like the pass, was to take the sack. you take the sack there. you don't throw it away. >> al: let the clock run or make them use a time-out. they didn't have one at that point so the clock would have run. second down and ten. one last gasp looking for a lateral. vereen looking behind him.
11:45 pm
ball is loose, picked up. and that will end a game that will be very hard to describe unless you have about 20 minutes to listen. >> cris: wow. welcome to "sunday night football." >> al: just another one. giants/cowboys. that's the fifth consecutive time that the cowboys have defeated the giants. none of them have been like this one. three turnovers to none. some unbelievably hurtful penalties. they overcame everything at the end and win it. >> cris: how about what tom coughlin told us. ep said he said it will probably take at least 28 points to win it. >> al: right on the number. >> cris: here's the play. they decide to go play action. now eli's going to scramble around. the right decision there would
11:46 pm
have been to take the sack. if you're not at all comfortable, take another step or two towards the line of scrimmage. take a knee. instead, the extra 35 seconds won the game for the dallas cowboys. >> al: crazy stuff on both sides of the ball tonight. what a game, 27-26. volkswagen post-game report coming up on the other side of the break.
11:49 pm
well, as al michaels said toward the end, it would take about an hour to break this one down, to dissect it, all the second-guesses, all the twists and turns. and somehow the cowboys wind up winning it 27-26. the game balls are going to go to tony romo and jason witten. a pair of veteran cowboys. witten caught eight passes, two of them for touchdowns including the game winner. witten and romo are with michele. >> michele: on that last touchdown play, trouble on the snap. how did you keep your composure to get it and to complete the pass? >> yeah.
11:50 pm
i think i had a lot of practice when in 2007. the cowboy fans don't know that. but at that moment you really have no choice. it's coming down to a play or two and you just -- i felt comfortable with the play. you just got to get calm, pick it up, trust your guys around you to do their job and they did a hell of a job. >> michele: so many things went wrong tonight. the three turnovers, loss of dez. how did you guys fight through that? >> yeah. it was a tough night. we didn't play great in a lot of areas. obviously the ball was the biggest one.imately at the end e day, it comes down to the final eight minutes every single week. our team strives to be very comfortable in that situation and you got to believe. you just got to be comfortable and go play. there was a lot of emotion in that hug between you and jason garrett. what was the feeling? >> every week in the nfl if you win it feels great especially when you're down, i don't know

11:52 pm
saying, leaders kept saying, tony does a great job of creating plays. one of the best in the bits. it was a big win for our football team. michel >> michele: congratulations. jason witten continues to be the security blanket for tony romo. >> you think back, cowboys history, lots of dra pmadrama, meredith, danny white, roger staubach. tony romo has had lots of late come from behind wins. this is the latest game winning touchdown pass, seven seconds on the clock, in cowboy history. let's bring in tony dungy. tony, how did you see the last minute and change playing out and the controversial play when eli threw it out of the back of end zone and that left the cowboys more time than they otherwise would have had? >> well, bob, that was absolutely baffling to me. i have no problem with the play call to throw the football. you have avenue got eli manning, you want to let him throw it but you have to tell him when you send the play in, if it's not
11:53 pm
wide open, take the sack, fall down. if our man not open, fall down, let the 40 seconds run off. there should have been about 45 to 50 seconds for dallas to operate. not 1:30. that was just a big, big mistake by the giants. >> of course they had no time-outs left, but with about a minute and a half, i think it was 1:37 when the change of possession happened, they didn't need, as it turned out, by the skin of their teeth, they didn't into ed a time-out. maybe with less time than they had, they would have needed one desperately and wouldn't have had it. >> absolutely. and it would have shrunk the time dallas would have had to play faster. giants could have played different defense, just protect the sidelines. should have been less than a minute when dallas got the ball back. just a big, big mistake by the giants. >> all right, tony. thanks. we'll turn to mike gloria of pro football talk now. what are you working on for tomorrow's show? >> we're waiting to see how the league office reacts to a couple of plays we saw in the first
