and breaking right now at 11:00, we are learning about a foiled plot against the pope during his upcoming visit to the u.s. good morning, i'm vai sikahema. there was an arrest in a plot to carry out an attack during the papal visit. we're live outside the basilica of st.s peter and paul. lauren, what can you tell us? >> reporter: nbc 10 has confirmed this is an individual from new jersey who has been arrested. information is still coming in this morning, but nbc news has confirmed that this is a teenager, a 15-year-old boy we are talking about here threatening what is being called an isis-inspired threat.

now, the pope has plans, of course, to visit here in philadelphia but also new york and washington this month. nbc news confirms an alert went out to law enforcement last month about this threat indicating this teenager was planning a detailed attack involving multiple attackers, firearms and explosives against a visiting dignitary. now, this bulletin also says that the boy obtained detailed explosives instructions and also disseminated those online on social media. again, this individual, a teenager from new jersey, has been arrested and charged at this point. although i can tell you there are no public documents right now to support that arrest that we have been able to find at this point. we've also reached out to the fbi. they tell us they are working with both federal, local, and state partners to assure a safe papal visit. we are going to continue to follow this story throughout the day. for now i'm live in center city,

the line up on saturday, september 26. organizers made the announcement, also actor mark wahlberg is hosting the event. visit the nbc 10 app for the full papal itinerary. you will have the full rundown of road closures and transportation changes there. happening right now, dozens of fire victims in center city are waiting to see if they have a home to return to. they were forced out when fierce flames from a neighboring construction site engulfed the portion of a city block. this is amateur video here you're looking at at its height around 4:30 this morning. residents from at least two nearby buildings were all safely evacuated. fire broke out near 13th and chancellor streets. let's get right to nbc 10's jesse gary who has been covering this story from early this morning. jesse, what can you tell us? >> reporter: managers for the chancellor apartment building are calling residents back inside. that's the large building you

see there. they're calling them back inside on a floor-by-floor basis starting on the 24th floor and working their way down. it's a yernerve-wracking period wait and worry to see if there's a home to return to. >> a friend of mine text messaged me saying "i think my apartment is gone." >> d' angelo gore is waiting to see if the fire that singe it had outside of their apartment destroyed the imsigned of their homes. >> probably dealing with smoke damage. >> reporter: columns of smoke and flames lit the early morning sky in center city. a three alarm fire started at a restaurant and construction site next to the gramercy apartments but the blaze grows so large it burns the gramercy and chancellor apartment buildings. >> there was so much heat it extended across the street to the chancellor which has 24 stories and 240 apartments. >> reporter: hundreds of residents raced for available exits as an army of firefighters fought the blaze. >> i could hear the building

but i am tracking even warmer weather as we head into tomorrow. i'll let you know what to expect in my full forecast. >> see you then, brittney. new video into nbc 10 shows a suspect police say robbed a citgo gas station in west philadelphia. police say a 40-year-old employee was inside the station on lancaster avenue just before midnight last wednesday when the suspect kicked in the door to the sales counter, pointed a gun at the employee and took off with an unknown amount of cash. if you have any information, you're asked to call police. and add this new video showing two suspects that philadelphia police say burglarized a house in south philadelphia on september 5. police say surveillance cameras caught two men entering the home on south street through the front door. once they were inside, the suspects made off with electronics, bicycles and other valuables. you're asked to call philadelphia police if you happen to know anything about that break-in. and someone shot a 21-year-old man to death

overnight in south philadelphia. police say the gunman fired at least 10 shots at the man near 24th and montrose streets. investigators say someone saw the suspect riding a bicycle before and after the shooting but at this point there are no arrests. philadelphia police say someone on the top floor of a temple university dorm pointed a laser at a police helicopter. the lieutenant of the police department's aviation unit tweeted out this photo just after 11:30 last night. you can see a red light reflecting just off of that top floor. those top windows. lieutenant david bonk on twitter said someone inside the building "hit us twice a few seconds apart." police say they will not go after the person responsible this time but they want people to remember pointing a laser at aircraft is illegal because it can temporarily blind the pilots. delaware governor jack markel is headed to europe today in an attempt to strengthen the state's economy. governor markel will lead a

bus overturned on a highway in houston. the accident happened when the bus crashed into a guardrail, flipped over on its side and landed on the road below. authorities are still trying to figure out what exactly caused the crash. the number of homes destroyed by raging wildfires out west is groing. at least two dozen fires are spread across washington, oregon and california.

with than 2,500 people were evacuated. mount sinabung became active again in 2010 after being dormant for centuries. a colorado pizza shop will keep its front door closed from now on after workers gotten a unexpected visitors yesterday. a curious bear cub found its way into the restaurant and was on the hunt for tasty treats. staff and customers were excited and brave enough to capture the baby bruin with a sweet tooth on their cell phone. >> i asked what was up and they said that was bear in there eating the ice cream. >> she got into our ice cream cups and she was eating them. >> parks and wildlife officers were called in to remove the wayward wanderer. the cub was orphaned and had an injured paw but the animal is being treated at a rehab facility. >> whether it's crime, abuse, homelessness or the death of a parent, many children have suffered or witnessed some form of trauma and many carry those psychological scars with help the into the classroom. helping those young people

overcome those issues the aim of the upcoming brain strain symposium being held by 900 a.m. wurd. joining us now is one of the participants, otis hackney, principal of south philadelphia high school. let's talk about this. you live with this everyday with your students. what have you experienced? >> well, the experience that our students have, especially at south philadelphia high school, is that we have such a high number of students that have come from such traumatic situations in their upbringing and so all schools have students that have experienced trauma but then you have some schools that have higher concentrations to the level of need and intervention to get students to modify their behavior and to overall improve academic outcomes takes work and intervention to get that turn around so they can understand and feel more comfortable and build trust with the adults in the school. >> let's talk more specifically about that work. what do you do to help these kids? >> so we have a lot of

counselors. well, i shouldn't say a lot, but even given the district crisis i have two counselors in my building but we also partner with outside agencies so that's something that i firmly believe in is providing students with a great deal of support so that way it can help them through those trying times. our counselors and my crisis team when students are in need, we make sure that their needs are being met, so whether it's contacting parents or doing home visits, getting them contacted to the proper resources and support, that's what we've done and that's what we do on a regular basis. >> and that says nothing of the situation you have in south high school, we're just talking about the weather when it's hot you don't have air conditioning. tell us about the symposium and what you hope will come of it. >> well, what i'm hoping and, you know, if they check out the web site they will see the other experts on the field, so i'm coming in as the practitioner and what it talks to engage students that have been through or victims of trauma and the level of supports that it takes

to get them to be successful. so you'll have experts that can talk about brain development and how that impacts their learning and behavior to the social services feed to provide students with different opportunities to grow emotionally. some of our students are lacking in the emotional iq. they don't know how to handled adversity or -- and how that impacts them on their daily basis with their thought processes when they get hit with a challenge how they react. so you have to teach them and model behavior for them so they will respond accordingly. and you see growth from the people that we have surrounding help the and supporting them. it's not always 100% but every year we get better in south philadelphia high school. >> you clearly have different challenges in south high school in philadelphia than folks do in the suburbs. mr. hackney, thank you for coming in. we appreciate it. brain strain, the effect of trauma on education takes place wednesday, september 30 from

eight degrees in millville, mount holly, up nine degrees in the pocono so it should feel warmer to you and as we head into the rest of the afternoon and rest of the week we'll stay nice and warm and it will be warmer tomorrow. 68 in the pocono, 72 in allentown, 71 in potstown, 76 in wilmington, 73 in wild wood. temperatures in dover in the 70s and 76 at the atlantic city airport right now. across the rest of the nation, we're basically seeing the same type of weather, warm, above average and staying dry. so 67 degrees in cincinnati, 74 in st. louis and our average for the this time of year here in philadelphia is 79 and today we'll warm to 84. by tomorrow we're up to 87 degrees. so like i mentioned across most of the nation stretching back to the plains we are dealing with high pressure, it's keeping us nice and dry and warm. that area of high pressure is going to shift closer to us as we head into the rest of your week and that means temperatures

researchers say the most harmful type of pollution involves microscopic particles that are absorbed into the lungs and bloodstream which can't be sneezed or coughed out. even small increases are linked to slightly more deaths from any cause as well as heart disease death and more deaths from a pratory disease among non-smokers. researchers want to see if the most harmful types of collusion comes from car exhaust, chemical plants or coal-burning plants. a new research links vitamin "d" deficiency with cognitive decline among older adults. a rutgers university study of almost 400 studies found vitamin "d" levels were lower among african-americans, hispanics and people with dementia. five years later, those who didn't have enough vitamin "d" had faster declines in memory and brain function than those with adequate levels. and new research suggests mindfulness meditation may have a negative impact on memory. the practice is believed to be beneficial for the mind and body but researchers say the practice

>> reporter: fire officials confirm two explosions in the midst of this fire that started on the opposite side of the street from the chancellor apartment building, that large, very tall apartment building there and spread over to the building. because of that, there were reports of the atf being involved in this. right now the atf is not officially involved according to the fire department but they are -- any time there's an explosion they want to see what's up. that is construction site so that could be the reason they were here right now residents who live on the lower floors are most severely impacted by this fire but are being allowed to survey the damage. around 4:30, columns of smoke and flames lit the early morning sky. a three-alarm fire with at least two explosions according to the fire department at a restaurant and bar construction site next to the grammar city apartments on chancellor street. the blaze grew so large it reached the gramercy and chancellor apartment buildings.

viewer shot earlier this morning. the fire chief tells us a construction company working on gas lines in the area may have caused this explosion. we have also in addition to sky force 10 dispatched a crew along with sidney long, she is on her way to the scene for 4:00. meanwhile, a didny flash flood killed at least eight people after two vehicles were swept away near the utah/arizona border. as nbc's ron mott tells us, five other people are still missing. >> reporter: a small town is picking up the pieces after powerful flash floods swept through utah. happening in hildale where a powerful storm triggered floods and mudslides. >> they have stranded vehicles and hikers. >> do you have any idea how many personnel they need. >> whatever crews you can spare. >> reporter: officials say two vehicles were washed off a road

in dallas last night, dozens of people protested donald trump outside the arena where he was campaigning. demonstrators chanted and car carried banners denouncing his views on immigration. some trump supporters confronted the supporters but police made no arrests. trump leads the republican presidential field heading into the party's second debate tomorrow night. trump will be one of 11 candidate candidates that will be on stage. five other hopefuls will debate prior to the main event. on the democratic side, hillary clinton is working to target women voters. a group key to her campaign to stop her recent skid in the polls. nbc's andrea mitchell has more. >> i really hope you will join our campaign in iowa. >> reporter: crisscrossing iowa, hillary clinton trying to shore up her support among women. >> today i want to send a

comfortable temperatures, and that combination is going to stick around. although temperatures are warm up a little bit to that's in store for us over the next few days here. currently we're at 68 degrees in the poconos. 74 in trenton, 75 in mount holly. if you're with us in atlantic city, 76. 77 in millville and temperatures in dover at 74. so not a bad way to start off your tuesday. 24 hour temperature change map shows almost ten degrees warmer right now than this time year. same thing in philadelphia up eight degrees, up eight degrees in atlantic city and millville and temperatures are warmer in reading and lancaster. 79 degrees. just to put in the perspective yesterday we were below that average with a high of 77. into today 84. by wednesday we are up to 87 degrees. so we continue to see temperatures climbing and we're going to hit a plateau, i'll show you that in the seven day. but satellite radar shot shows it's not just us seeing quiet conditions with lots of

sunshine. take a look at half of the country, really, this stretches back through the south down the midwest into the plain states. we have a big area of high pressure and that's off to to the southwest of us, that will continue to move closer to us heading into tomorrow and the day after and so our temperatures will begin to go up. but our futurecast shows us tuesday into wednesday and thursday most of the makes the, at least half of the nation, stays nice and dry with this ridge of high pressure and as we push into thursday, friday, even saturday we are still staying dry. but our humidity will start to go up so that will be a change as we get to the end of your work week. 75 will be the high today in the poconos. 79 in allentown, 80 in pottstown, 83 to 84 in philadelphia then warming up more than that by tomorrow. we'll push to 86 for northeast philly, mid-80s in atlantic city and in the poconos close to 80 degrees by the time we head into wednesday. but your seven-day forecast shows we stay in the high 80s
