necessarily need to happen, so that's why we're here today. we want to talk about it before the world meeting of families happens. >> reporter: jeffrey jordan is pastor of the metropolitan community church of philadelphia, a group claiming some presenters at the world meeting of families support groups associated with the controversial and in some states illegal conversion therapy to change someone's sexual orientation. i asked archbishop charles chaput about it. is that therapy something you condone? >> you know, i leave that kind of question to the experts. it's a question of beyond my confidence, so i certainly don't take a position in favor of it or against it. whatever the doctors say, i think we should pay attention to. >> reporter: would you be comfortable with anyone speaking about it at the world meeting of families? >> i don't expect they are going to. >> reporter: preparations for the program becoming more evident each day. construction now fills one end of the parkway. pope francis will perform a mass here and during his entire time

here be accompanied by the archbishop who knew him long before he became pope. how are you feeling? are you nervous at all? >> i haven't allowed myself to focus on what it's going to be like the last two days. my full time and attention is focused on how to get from here to there. >> reporter: he did acknowledge there are some nerch nerves in putting this together. as for the group here, the pastor tells me they are taking part in a petition to disinvite any of those associated with conversion therapy. i asked specifically whether they might come back again during the world meeting of families and protest at that time. he told me, no, they wanted to do this beforehand. live in center city, i'm lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. >> and the traffic troubles in center city related to the pope's visit may officially start today. the inner areas of the ben franklin parkway are now closed in both directions to 20th street and remain closed until

tuesday, september 29th. the outer drives will temporarily remain open. and all eyes will be watching what happens during the pope's visit. today nbc 10 got a tour of the delaware valley intelligence center in south philadelphia. this is a realtime crime center with cameras around the region. they'll also monitor social media for any potential threats. officers say other parts of the city not affected by the pope will also be monitored. nbc 10 will have live coverage when the pope visits the u.s. next week before his philadelphia arrival. you can watch us anywhere on the free nbc 10 news app. breaking news right now in the last hour, investigators have ruled this fire at a restaurant construction site in center city a case of arson. flames tore right through the building at 13th and chancellor tuesday morning. residents of two neighboring apartment buildings are out of their homes tonight because of that fire. the atf released surveillance pictures of the person it is looking to talk to, so take a look here. it's also offering a $5,000

reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in that case. one bedbug cost philadelphia $2,500 today at city hall. dozens of workers were sent home early. nbc 10's rosemary connors is joining us now to explain what happened, rosemary. >> this after a dead bug was found in the carpet at the 311 call center, there was a fear of a bedbug infestation, so about 50 employees were sent home for the day. in the meantime, officials called in an exterminator to clean out the entire office. the office was treated and the extermination crews didn't find anymore bugs. workers in the 311 call center, by the way, answered questions from people, so if you have a question about a city operation, give them a call. lately it's been all about the pope's visit. if you have questions, you can e-mail them or ask on social media. the workers will return to the office at 8:00 tomorrow morning. jim, back to you. >> rosemary, thank you. senator bob menendez's

corruption trial likely won't happen until the fall of next year. today a judge said he's moving the court date from next month to make room for expected appeals. prosecutors allege menendez accepted cash and gifts from a florida doctor in exchange for political influence. new information in the investigation of kathleen kane. detectives served kane with a new search warrant in her office in harrisburg today. that search comes h s 40 days a kane was charged with leaking grand jury information and lying about it. her office says it doesn't know what authorities were looking for today. >> they stayed about three hours, then left. it did not appear to me that they took anything with them. >> kathleen kane has denied breaking any laws. tonight a wife is behind bars charged with killing her husband. the husband was stabbed several times in their home this morning in the frankford section of philadelphia. police haven't released the identities of the suspect or

victim. philadelphia police are hoping you can help them stop a pair of very busy burglars. take a look at surveillance video of the two in action right here. police say they hit at least nine businesses between july 6th and this week in west and north philadelphia. sometimes they work together, other times they were alone. they've taken everything from cigarettes to cash, guns, and laptops. police believe they are driving a light colored suv, either a dodge durango or ford explorer. some delaware parents protested in dover this afternoon. parents are demanding the right to opt their kids out of delaware's controversial new smarter balanced assessment test. state lawmakers voted to let families opt out of the test, but in july the governor vetoed that bill, arguing students should have to take it. families say the test is a waste of time, time that could be better spent in the classroom. the unemployment rate in new jersey is now at its lowest level since 2008.

employers in the private sector adding almost 14,000 jobs last month. the unemployment rate is now 5.7%. last night in the republican presidential debate, governor chris christie mentioned the growth in the private sector. tomorrow stockton university will reveal who will buy the former show boat casino in atlantic city. the closed casino was bought in december for $18 million and wanted to convert it to a satellite college campus but restrictions on how the property could be used changed the deal. two days of meetings and late today the federal reserve decided to do nothing, not to raise interest rates right now. it says a weak global economy and unstable financial markets were why. the rates haven't changed in nearly a decade. there's a big movie premiere and the red carpet is rolled out in philadelphia tonight. actor richard gere playing a homeless man in "time out of mind." nbc 10 anchor jacqueline london

this role, you have been wanting to make it for some time, very passionate about it. >> you know, i read the script maybe 15 years ago, and it -- the script wasn't right, but something about me touched me and i kept thinking about it, thinking about it, so i ended up buying it about 12 years ago. this is going to take me a while to figure it out, but i'm going to get it, and there was a book that i read by a homeless guy, cadillac man, it's called "in the land of lost souls," and it pretty much told me how to make this movie. it's very real, there's no sentimentality, there's no dramaturgy, it's just life as it is. very naturalistic. operatic in its own way, fractured, deep, and i found incredibly moving. then i found other than

lobarman. >> writer/director, yeah. >> we had been friends working on todd haines movie, the bob dylan movie, so he read it and we just jumped in and did this. but i've been working with a group in new york called the coalition with the homeless for many, many years. in fact, i was an inspector for them. they are one of the two groups allowed to go into the shelters in new york. >> and how are you able to really immerse yourself in the streets of new york and go virtually unrecognized in the 21 days that it took to shoot this movie? you were only recognized twice. >> bizarre. we were -- where we chose to do the movie, again, to make it feel as real as possible. it was me being in the streets of new york, and we didn't know if it would work, obviously. i can't stand around new york as richard gere, but we did a test day in character and costume and a bad haircut and -- >> i can't imagine what that felt like. >> in character. stood on a corner in astor

place, busy place in west village, and nobody paid any taep attention. they were reading me from blocks away sometimes this is a homeless guy and didn't bother to look more than that. we were shooting digitally, 45 minutes the shot, very first shot we did. no one made eye contact with me. and it was a profound experience for me personally, but all of us as film makers. my god, we all live on the surface of things. >> with that you're hoping people who watch this movie don't ignore, that they look up, they don't look down and they address the people that are on the streets. >> we're all people, we're all in this together. the labels and the characterizations, the broad characterizations we give to people are not true. they are all lies and we have to look deeper than that. these things can be solved. sister, come over here.

fields. the driver got out just in time. the fire forced the lockdown of the high school because gas cylinders on the truck were exploding. dozens of residents in area don't have electricity and could be tomorrow before they repair the burned lines and reopen the road. tomorrow morning is the hope. preparing for the pope. what happens if someone has a medical emergency during the pope's visit, before yet, what happens if the pope needs a doctor? well, today we learned new information about the medical plans. nbc 10's deanna durante tells us a medical tent city will be set up inside the seminary should the pontiff need them. >> we are going to go to sort of an all hands on deck. >> reporter: a conference room will turn into a bedroom. emts will be riding bikes and every paid staffer will be working next week when the pope is in town. >> we have no idea the impact on the normal ems district. >> reporter: the ambulance service is calling on all its members to help and some will be inside the seminary full time.

others will be in philadelphia, city avenue, and along the motorcade route to treat those who could fall ill. >> basically an ems tent city where there's going to be physicians, nurses, paramedics that will be able to field triage people and determine if they need to go to the hospital. >> reporter: primary care for the pope will need all it can borrow to treat the thousands who show up here hoping to see him. in addition to its own fleet of ambulances, they'll be borrowing from surrounding townships, even a motorcycle to get to people who need help. >> a bus can hold 11 patients at a time, with so many medics on staff, all the normal calls can be handled, too. choppers will be stationed around the area to get people to hospitals inside secure zones. deanna durante, nbc 10 news. atlantic city's trying to attract more tourists for more than just gambling. resort leaders are confident conventions and conferences will attract a different type of visitor. a ribbon cutting announced the

opening of the new harrah's conference center, which cost nearly $126 million to build. it's touted as the largest hotel conference facility between baltimore and boston. leaders agree it will serve as a catalyst to lure new nonsummer and week day business travelers to the resort, striving to become less dependent on gambling. >> see our city sometimes for the first time and they'll come back and visit with their families. >> and tomorrow could be another big day for atlantic city, an announcement expected to confirm reports a developer is buying the closed show boat casino. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> well, we're going to have a nice way to end out the week, a lot like what we've seen already this week. the warmth continues. that's going to go into your weekend. it's going to continue with the dry air and the sunshine, so all that's going to stay in the forecast for friday, even for

saturday. now for sunday for the eagles home opening game, we are looking at some changes and i have that forecast for you. a big cool down is coming, especially into next week, with temperatures more like fall type of weather and fall actually does start next week. here's a live look outside near the art museum, schuylkill river, not one cloud in the sky and we've really gotten used to seeing this all week long. 84 degrees right now in philadelphia, low humidity, very comfortable, feeling more like the low 80s outside, believe it or not. low 80s through the lehigh valley, 81 degrees pottstown, 82 westchester and wilmington. closer to the shore, upper 70s atlantic city and upper 70s in dover right now. and we will be keeping these mid 80s in the forecast the next couple days all because of this area of high pressure. this has kept our weather pattern in control all week. clouds have stayed away, rain has definitely stayed away, and it will continue for the next 48 hours, then we'll start to see

changes. for tomorrow, the warm air still here, the dry pattern still continues, so tomorrow afternoon looking just like today. then we go into saturday, still warm and still sunny, but just a little bit more humid as we start off your weekend. that's all ahead of a cold front. take a look at the cloud cover, more clouds move in, but we do expect to stay dry. cooler and breezy as we go through the day sunday, just in time for the eagles, but it's all going to be because of that cold front, it's going to cool us down big time into next week. so for the football schedule, the football forecast, tailgating if you're doing that, breezy, 73 degrees and around kickoff time if you're in the stadium temperatures will be right around the mid 70s, fourth quarter low 70s. for tonight, a lot like last night, pleasant, comfortable, 63 for the low in philadelphia. mid 50s north and west, mid 50s for some of the suburbs in new jersey, lake millville, and tomorrow another sunny and warm day. 84 to 87 degrees, low humidity, nice way to end out the week. saturday still in the mid 80s,

again. the rivalry that's always been heated and demarco murray changing colors this season only increases the intensity. as for quarterback sam bradford, this will be his first case of the eagles/boys rivalry. he's never experienced the rivalry firsthand, but bradford is learning quickly. >> you know, i think i'm learning quickly that there's not a lot of love lost between the two sides. i think a couple of the guys were, you know, yesterday everyone was talking about they had some choice words for dallas. obviously, what was it, our first or second practice they had the banner over the stadium. obviously, this is a big game for both teams. >> took a while for the eagles to get going monday night, but when they did they moved the rock through the air but did so methodically. they didn't attempt any deep passes, despite having a quarterback with great arm

outraged bicycle owners who had their bikes seized in cape may are going to avoid paying a $100 fine. last month you recall city workers cut the locks and then impounded about 30 bikes that were chained to parts of the city's beach front promenade walkway. officials cited a city law that bans bikes from the promenade during certain times of the day. so a resolution there. we're resolved to enjoy nice weather ahead. >> yes, nice weather as we end the week and start the weekend. if you like the summer-like weather, well it's going to continue for friday, saturday, changes, though into sunday, so we are talking about cloud cover sunday bringing in cooler air, 78 degrees for the high, it's going to be breezy and into next week, look at this, mid 70s, fall officially begins next wednesday, believe it or not, and we all know what comes after fall, but we're not thinking about that. >> the "w" word, not going to
