>> >> breaking news in northeast philadelphia. police say three men broke into a house threw a woman to the ground and ransacked the place while children slept. we're live on the scene of that home invasion. with eight days until pope francis arrives in philadelphia, the focus today is on security. a top federal official will be in town today to get a good look at what's being done to insure safety. a live look outside, t"the star-spangled banner" not moving much. 65 degrees and we'll warm up nicely again today but there is a change in time for sunday's all-important home opener against those hate it cowboys that will be in town to hopefully lose to the eagles. friday morning, we're ready for football. good morning.

this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm chris cato. let's get to meteorologist brittney shipp. it's a nice start out to the morning. >> it is. we are going to see temperatures warming above average again. if you look at philadelphia, 66 degrees, humidity at 84%, the air is calm so another nice start to the morning. on the mild side which is great. satellite/radar shot shows another round of quiet conditions for us. we will see lots of sunshine again today. our humidity stays down. by tomorrow that's going to increase. so your city planner shows temperatures by 6:00 a.m. at 65. by noon 81. today's high close to 86 degrees but coming up i'm going to talk about the increase in humidity and a cooler eagles forecast on tap as we head into the weekend. now let's check in with first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. >> we're watching 95 right now approaching the blue route where we do have ongoing construction new. you can see signs here pushing

traffic over to the left side. we are losing out the right hand shoulder and the next lane over. cars moving by nicely right now. we don't have a lot of traffic so that's the good thing we have going. we'll keep our eyes on that. the rest of the drive times, up to the vine street expressway no problems there, into the center city area on the schuylkill, 12 minutes, the blue route having no problems right now. mass transit we're in the clear so far with no delays. when i come back we're going to check in with more construction spots. >> back to breaking news. robbers terrorize a woman after breaking into her home in northeast philadelphia according to police. matt delucia is live for us on scene there. matt, there were kids in the home, right? >> reporter: that's right. first off the mother and two children are okay, they were not hurt in this. you can imagine what was going on. after 1:00 this is the house there, the 33-year-old mother was in her upstairs bedroom.

she heard the break-in, went downstairs and saw the three men. police tell us the three masked men broke into the basement door of the house when the mother gets downstairs she sees the three men, one of them put a gun to her head, the other two ransacked the house. tied up the family dog in the basement and stole at least $800 in cash. a 2-year-old and 10-year-old were upstairs in separate bedrooms sleeping at the time. they fortunately slept through the whole thing. the men got away. back out live on the scene, 2800 block of shipley street. police have since left the scene. but detectives will be going through all of the evidence that they found out here trying to get them anything that might lead them to the three masked men. we did speak with police not long ago about what happened out here. i'm working on that audio. i'll have that for you when we see you again at 4:30. live in northeast philadelphia, matt delucia, "nbc 10 news." here is what else we're following. two victims, two suspects, no

arrests. philadelphia police can't to find gun men who opened fire, someone shot men at grass and 19th streets in the logan section of the city. both are in stable condition. witnesses saw two men running from the scene. 4:04. we're just eight days from pope francis' arrival in philadelphia not to mention the influx of 1.5 million people. today the daunting task of security takes center stage. jeh johnson will be here to review what's being done. katy zachry is live on the ben franklin parkway with a preview. >> reporter: people know at home if they have been near the benjamin franklin parkway you know more preparations are being made daily and that's no exception today. pope francis, we're about a week away from his visit and he is expected to attract crowds of well over a million people.

the secretary of homeland security will meet with mayor michael nutter today as well as the head of the u.s. secret service. nbc 10 spoke with chancy, he is a delaware county native. he tells us a lone wolf or group attack is his biggest concern. >> making sure we have enough personnel. we reached out to assure we have enough personnel to screen the facilities and enough people at each of the venues. >> reporter: with eight days to go before the pope francis visit, authorities tell us they are soon starting to remove manhole covers and trash cans from along the ben franklin parkway. coming up we'll talk about some road closures that have already taken effect that could drastically affect your morning commute coming up. reporting live, katy zachry, "nbc 10 news." when pope francis is here he will be hosted by a man,

investigators say this fire that caused a million dollars in damage in center city is a case of arson. investigators also have a clue, this photo here. a surveillance photo, the atf says shows a person of interest leaving the area shortly before the fire erupted tuesday morning at 13th and chancellor street. there is a $5,000 reward for information on this man. the fire destroyed a restaurant under construction and damaged the chancellor apartment building. dozens are out of their homes and we were there as the manager of the apartments cleared some of the rubble. schuyler is thankful the damage is on the other side of her home but she does feel for her neighbors. >> everything is melted. her air conditionaler fell off. all of her pictures, her appliances are destroyed. >> sw a lot of work still has to be done before the 40 people displaced can move back in. if you recognize the person in those photos we showed, call the

atf. a hunter stumbled upon human remains yesterday. state police are trying to figure out who it is and what happened to them. the hunter found the remains near route 40 in buena vista township and items including this baseball cap, a red wind breaker, a green back pack with a cell phone, and prescription eyeglasses. philadelphia police say they are frustrated that assaults alleged assaults are reported on social media but not to police. runners on the schuylkill banks trail have posted that they are being harassed and assaulted. the discussion took off earlier this week after a woman on facebook said she watched a woman being attacked by a group of kids on bicycles. other runners commented that they experienced the same thing. the nonprofit organization that oversees the trail urges people to call police if they see

trouble. good morning. a cool start to the morning for most folks. a few locations on the mild side like philadelphia at 66 but we're about 10 degrees cooler if you're waking up with us in chester springs at 56, 57 in kenneth square, 61 in wilmington, in trenlton in the low 60s. 64 in quakertown. 55 degrees in allentown, 55 in pottstown, 52 in coatesville and in oxford at 55 degrees. warmer here in dover at 64. our temperatures in mount holly at 58 degrees. so we are going to stay warm once again today heading into tomorrow. our average this time of year is 78 degrees. instead today we'll be above average up to 86. and then as we start off the weekend 86 degrees but the feels like temperature on saturday is going to go up because our humidity is going to go up. keep that in mind as you make your weekend plans.

daily fantasy apps that let you win money. you see these advertised. some local lawmakers say the apps could be illegal and some say they could be dangerous. they promise big cash payouts. fanduel says this is not gambling but a fun way to follow your team. one lawmaker sent a letter to congress asking for a hearing likening the apps to traditional sports betting. >> you consider it a form of gambling? >> request of course. yes. but it's great though. that's the excitement part about it. >> when it gets to the point you start ignoring other aspects of your life then it becomes a problem. >> fanduel gave us this statement saying fanduel is really a sports entertainment company. really a game of skill like chess, spelling bees and golf. and the overwhelming majority of users play because it makes watching sports more exciting.

>> allentown city council passed a measure to place city contracts under more scrutiny this amid an fbi probe into the city's contracting process. the measure requires council approval of professional services. contracts totaling more than $40,000. the city's managing director tells us that mayor will sign the new law. the mayor and reading's mayor are both under investigation for how contractors were hired. in july fbi agents raided both allentown and reading city hall. some bike riders who got kikts last month won't have to pay fines. our previous report city workers cut the locks to 30 bicycles changed to the walkway impounding the bikes, four of the bike owners fought the $100 tickets in court yesterday. officials cited a city law that bans bikes from the promenade

during certain times but those who went to court say they agreed to plead guilty to avoid paying fines and court costs. this morning the union representing philadelphia's teachers says it's time to end the outsourcing of substitutes. they want the skmigs to cancel the contracts of the third party company. a commission meeting was held. the union says that substitute company isn't providing adequate coverage. the school district issued a statement saying it is deeply disappointed in source for teachers. the district says if the unacceptable performance continues their work is in jeopardy. camden county has new laws now aimed at stopping puppy mills. the freeholder board voted to approve norman's law. the law bans pet stores from selling animals from puppy mills. the health department will inspect all pet stores to determine where the pets come

in millville, 57 at the atlantic city airport. so not a bad way to start the morning. our satellite/radar shows quiet conditions, not seeing a lot of cloudiness, not a lot of rainfall so things are nice and calm for today. we have a few changes as we go into the weekend. this area of high pressure sits offshore with an area of high pressure you have the clockwise rotation. as it moves offshore it starts to pull up moisture from the south. so we'll also see a little cold front moving in with that. that's going to help drop our temperatures into sunday. so those are the big weekend changes. more humidity and things cool off as we head into sunday. around the region close to 86 for philadelphia, 84 in pottstown, 85 degrees in allentown, 78 the high in the poconos, 83 in the atlantic city and 80 in wildwood. the seven-day forecast shows more humidity on saturday, look at sunday, breezy conditions, our temperatures drop down as we head into the second half of the weekend. 70s expected next week.

time to get another early check of the roads out there on a friday morning, see if anything can slow you down. jessica boyington is watching the roosevelt boulevard. >> we're clear so far. if you're on the boulevard these are cameras here looking live around broad street. northbound, southbound, into the schuylkill expressway all traffic moving along nicely. no problems there. but we couldn't avoid this. the pope closures, the ben franklin parkway. watch for the inner lanes closed, in both directions between eakins oval and 20th street until september 29. so a heads up. only going to get worse. for the bridges, no problems, on the walt, the ben, tacony palmyra and the burlington bristol are in the clear. when i come back, more drive times. >> it's a move that could affect your savings and investments. we'll tell you why the federal reserve decided to hold steady on a key interest rate and if this means we'll see rate hikes

one reason the fed isn't acting now is that inflation is running well below the central bank's objective of 2%. 50 immigrants from across the world are u.s. citizens this morning after a ceremony in center city yesterday. they took the oath allegiance at the national constitution center, the ceremony was part of constitution day events here. congratulations to all of those new u.s. citizens. the white house launched a campaign to help millions of others become citizens. a new public awareness campaign to help people in this country legally become citizens. it will include more than 70 citizenship outreach events in the first week. the government will launch a practice test to help people prepare for the exams they have to pass to become citizens. right now about 9 million people in this country legally are eligible to apply for citizenship.
