pope francis held mass this morning in revolution plaza in holguin. tens of thousands of catholic faithful appeared at the event. the pope traveled through the crowd in his pope mobile before conducting mass. >> pope francis will travel to the united states tomorrow, where he'll visit washington, d.c. and new york city before he arrives in philadelphia on saturday. preparations for the visit to the city of brotherly love continue today in center city, including a special bunting on city hall. workers also finished installing large video monitors in the area and more porta potties were unloaded and added to the dozens that already line the walnut street bridge next to 30th street station. it's taking people longer and longer to get in and out of center city as more roads close. >> going to need patience this week. a live look at the ben franklin

parkway where the inner and outer lanes are closed in preparation for the holy father's visit. also today the no parking zone expanded to the second phase. people parked in the areas you see shaded in yoel low have to move their cars by 9:00 this morning. no parking in the light green started last night. nbc 10's doug shimell is live in fairmount. tell us more about that. >> reporter: well, they may be following the schedule, but apparently not all of the no parking signs are going up where they are supposed to be. they thought they were okay. >> we were watching every day for signs. they never posted any signs. secret service told us this street was okay. ppa was confused about it. >> reporter: residents say the tow squad showed up this morning and went to work. >> then all of a sudden they came and they claimed that we either took down the signs and

also that we should have known. >> reporter: josh roberts and many other residents bought placards that let them stay on the street until 10:00 p.m. thursday night. as for the towing at 20th and brandywine, they stopped as suddenly as they started and left. >> the police sergeant said, look, you know, i see this block isn't signed with the no parking signs, so i'm not going to ticket the cars, i'm not going to charge them for the tow. >> reporter: just within the last hour, parking authority came through here and put up those temporary police no parking signs, and, of course, that ticket is $76. the tow is $175, and the next round of towing, according to the parking authority, starts tomorrow night after 6:00 near independence hall. live in fairmount, doug shimell, nbc 10 news. >> all right, doug, thank you. >> now we go to jessica with more on how the drivers are affected right now. jessica? >> we do have no parking zones,

also several road closures in the area, one on kelly drive between fairmount avenue and that will be closed until tuesday the 29th. as we head forward to the ben franklin parkway, completely closed between art museum circle and also the ben franklin between 12th and 25th, about three blocks north or south of that area, so watch out for that. let's take a look how these closures are affecting the area right now. schuylkill expressway, not doing too bad yet. westbound or eastbound, we have a significant increase in that drive time, but still doing okay. still 20 minutes if you're heading into the center city area right now. vine street expressway, the westbound lanes headed towards the schuylkill expressway or 30th street station is where we're seeing most of that increase. we'll check in again in the next 25 minutes or so with the drive times. jacqueline? >> all right, jessica.

now we go high above philadelphia with tim furlong live in sky force 10 for the aerial vantage point. tim? >> reporter: interesting when you talk about the parking restrictions and see it on a map and then over it in sky force 10 looking down and you can see the parking restrictions in person, they keep expanding and more and more stuff you see it, stages, speakers, fencing, you name it all popping up on the parkway. you see the size of the operation, made in america, pope's visit bigger than all those events. each day the restricted areas are going to widen. if you use the parkway in or out of the city, it's going to get tricky as the week goes on. this also means more spillover as we pan over to 76, the schuylkill expressway. later in the week that's going to close altogether and get worse as more people show up. i was at the convention center a while ago, more and more people are showing up for the world meetings of family. today is registration day, so a

lot of people checking in and they go out and do sightseeing. streets are getting more clogged up, but again it's very festive and exciting. i talked to a lot of people who say, yeah, a lot of hassle, but especially people here in this area, you have to remember these are our guests, we're welcoming these people into the area. it's going to be a headache for a lot of people, but you don't want to regret you weren't here to see this for yourself. you see the size of the operation, you see where the roads are closing. it's going to get tight over the next few days. you need to plan this out, go to nbc10.com and really look at the areas you need to go and say how can i get around this. where there's a will, there's a way. trust me there, is a solution, anywhere you need to get, it just will be a little tricky. live in sky force 10, tim furlong nbc 10 news. >> all right, tim. welcome to philadelphia, visitors. >> that's the greeting lighting up the link today.

live look to the eagles camera, message for people coming to town for the world meeting of families, that sign will switch to a message welcoming pope francis on saturday. >> not to be outdone, visitors arriving at the airport will get a warm welcome, as well. more than 1,000 volunteers in bright orange t-shirts will work the airport all week long as the nearly 1.5 million visitors fly in to see the pope. various baggage claims and kiosks with maps and information to make the event seamless for out of towners. >> this is where it all starts, the pope isn't here for another couple days, but we have the world meeting of families that starts tomorrow. >> some visitors even received flowers and maps of the city's1e gardens. papal coverage continues at 4:30. where people are looking at deals to get away from all the crowds. and at 4:45, looking back at the last papal visit on philadelphia. >> you can count on nbc 10 to follow the pope on his stops in the u.s.

coming in at 70 degrees. were in the low 70s, but that number has since dropped. 70 in millville, 68 degrees in wildwood. all these numbers overnight tonight will be dropping once again and we could still see a few light showers. right now we have a few very light sprinkles around the philadelphia area, moderate near 76 around northeast philly and also as we go into westchester, up through the lehigh valley, 476, light to moderate rain, but for the rest of this evening very slight chance for a shower. if you haven't seen one yet, otherwise this is how low temperatures will be dropping again. 52 for allentown and reading, mid 40s in the poconos. cloudy skies but around 57 for trenton, 58 mount holly. morning lows along the shore, low 60s. 58 for vineland, 59 in dover. around the philadelphia area and surrounding suburbs, temperatures will be bottoming out around the upper 50s. definitely still feeling like fall tonight and tomorrow. then we have a midweek warm up

and, of course, the weekend weather for the papal visit straight ahead. >> okay, sheena. it was hard to watch. disappointment an understatement for eagles fans. >> fans sounded off about the first 0-2 start since 2007. john clark starts us off with comments from coach chip kelly, john? >> this was one of the worst losses we've seen in a long time because of how inept the offense was and it was against the hated cowboys. the birds have their fewest rushing yards since 1961, 54 years ago. take a look at the faces of chip kelly and the players. you can see the frustration in their faces. they had just 21 yards of offense in the first half, their fewest yards in the first half in 21 years. they couldn't move the ball more than a yard per play. this is the offense with the second most yards in the nfl in

chip's first two years. chip today was asked if this was embarrassing. >> i mean, i was embarrassed. that's not the way we're supposed to play football and that's not what we're all about, but we didn't play well yesterday, and i was embarrassed yesterday. >> my message was we felt we prepared well in the preseason and now we didn't play well in the first half against atlanta, didn't play well at all against dallas. the team in the second half in atlanta is the team we need to show up this week against the jets. >> yeah, you cannot go 0-3. the birds have dug themselves a hole. nfl teams since 1990 that started 0-2 have made the playoffs less than 12% of the time, so a must win sunday at the jets. we're going to hear from sam bradford and demarco murray at 5:00. i'm john clark, back to you. >> team coverage continues now with sydney long live in gloucester county. >> i'm sure fans had plenty to

tell you on whether it's time to panic. >> reporter: hey, jim, they do disagree. they can't seem to grasp or let go, depending how you look at it, what happened on the field yesterday and to make it fair we sampled eagles fans who bleed green on both sides of the river, both in south philadelphia and here in south jersey to put our finger on the pulse, is it too early in the season to panic or not? >> i was panicking and it takes a lot for me to panic, but yesterday was a bit horrendous, panic definitely. >> eagles fans went back and forth on whether or not the birds will survive this season with an 0-2 start to dig themselves out of. >> had to walk away from the television set quite a few times. >> reporter: both are big news right now and lots of candidates have opinions. >> i'm panicked, yeah. they look terrible. >> i don't think it's time to panic. start the season off 0-2 is not a good thing, but it's a long

season. as long as we stay healthy, i think you got a good chance. >> i'm definitely panicking because the team isn't clicking as a whole, the offensive line is not looking good. there's a lot of dropped passes. >> reporter: one candidate, new jersey governor chris christie wasn't jumping for joy clearing for dallas in the philadelphia stands sunday, while life long eagles supporter almost walked out of the link early he couldn't bear to watch anymore. >> they couldn't gain 12 yards on offense rushing, that was just terrible. and they looked clueless. that was the worst thing. they looked completely out of sync. >> reporter: not time to panic for fans? >> no, you're a philly fan, you should be used to it. >> reporter: some say chip kelly and sam bradford fell apart at the seams, some putting their hands on eagles green threads the day after. >> halfway through the season and still don't have any wins, then we got to start panicking. >> reporter: now in our

unofficial straw poll, some fans tell me the reason they are holding on to the no panic mode hope right now is simply because none of the other division teams are looking good either. that is our time for right now, and, of course, this eagles debate will continue all season long. live in deptford, nbc 10. >> stainbc 10 is your officials eagles station. this weekend they take on the jets. turn to us for exclusive pregame and post game coverage all season long. now to a developing story, attorney general kathleen kane loses the court battle, but she can remain in power. pennsylvania supreme court temporarily suspended kane's law license, but she does not have to leave office. more on what this means for kane's future, deanna? >> reporter: well, she can't practice law and she can't sign legal documents or make legal decisions, that's according to the pennsylvania supreme court and legal experts we spoke to

that say kathleen kane can remain a figure head of the office. we're told the supreme court does not have the power to remove kane from office, however, if she does sign legal documents or practice law in any way, legal experts tell us she could be charged with another crime. now, the embattled attorney general has maintained she's done nothing wrong and will stay in office. she said she's disappointed in the supreme court's decision. kane's spokesman tells me it hasn't been decided who will take over the day to day legal matters in the office. it could be the first assistant or another top staffer. we reached out to a former bucks county prosecutor with more than 20 years experience running grand juries. he like many lawyers have been watching this same process. he says what happened with kathleen kane today is a process that would be used upon any lawyer charged with committing a crime and says in this case kane is being treated like any member of the bar. >> one wonders whether or not she can even make any decisions

as an attorney general. attorney general makes decisions every single day that impact people's lives, people's livelihood. can she make those decisions if she doesn't have the license to practice law? so, therefore, if she's allowed to continue as the attorney general, it would seem as though her staff is more qualified to practice law than she is. >> reporter: now the supreme court says it reached this decision 5-0. zellis says today's decision could help kathleen kane when it comes to her defense. since she has been talking about she is the victim of powerful political foes, she could use this to prove she is being victimized somehow when her case goes to court. now i also reached out to the governor's office asking if governor wolf will ask the pennsylvania state senate to try and remove kane from office, the governor's spokesperson tells me they are still reviewing today's decision from the supreme court. reporting live in willow grove,

deanna durante, nbc 10 news. >> kathleen kane released a statement just minutes ago saying in part, "i am disappointed by the action taken by the supreme court today. i continue to maintain my innocence and will continue trying to clean my name." a school in pennsylvania is forced to evacuate after a student tosses gasoline on a security guard. the female student poured the gas inside a soda can after she was stopped from going inside the school. she's now been suspended and is in custody. the guard does not appear to be seriously hurt and no students were injured. a worker is now charged with aggravated assault, accused of stabbing his coworker several times inside a hertz food truck. the victim says he never had prior disagreements with tamron jones. before jones attacked him with a kitchen knife on friday. philadelphia police say it happened as they drove, he needed stitches in his right eye

and his right arm and was treated for stab wounds to his head, stomach, and leg. a big relief for the family of a local girl who disappeared after leaving church. right now she's safe in the hospital. the 12-year-old girl was found at children's hospital last night. police tell us she is in good condition. these pictures show her at 30th street station last week when she disappeared after wandering away from her church. she recently had a brain tumor removed and suffers from memory loss and seizures. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen.cç >> much cooler start to the week. you all noticed it this morning and even through the afternoon, so the fall chill is here. it will continue as we go into tomorrow. tomorrow's going to be another cool day. clouds are going to hang around, too. then by the middle of the week we'll see changes. we'll have a warmup compared to today and then, of course, we're tracking that weather for the weekend. at this point it does look cooler and it does look to be mostly dry and we'll have

updates as we get closer to the weekend. of course, big event for the philadelphia area. overcast skies right now in philadelphia looking out at center city and light rain in the vicinity. so few light showers trying to move right now. nothing heavy, nothing long lasting, but 70 degrees is our temperature. it is still cool, humidity not too bad with this cool air in place. it's going to stay chilly into tomorrow morning. look at the temperatures now through the lehigh valley. 67 degrees, 67 right now in glassboro, 70 millville, 69 degrees in dover and atlantic city and these cool temperatures are going to drop overnight tonight. here's a look at the radar, clouds are locked in and will stay this way overnight. most of the showers we see moving through are mostly going to be here through the rest of the evening, not into tomorrow. as we zoom in, a few light showers over the philadelphia area, moving into lower montgomery county. this stretches across 95 and again these are mainly on the

light side shown by the green coloring. light showers towards reading, also westchester seeing light rain, over 76 and through the lehigh valley seeing more moderate shower. going to move through soon, right across 476, so keep in mind we do have light rain around the area, we haven't seen rain in a long time now, but at least today's going to be our only chance of rain. rest of the week looks to be on the drier side. big area of high pressure around maine. this is pulling in the cool air from the north and this is really going to stay in place as we go into overnight tonight and tomorrow. here's a look at the map. you can see that cool air really coming down, warm air stays well to our south. temperatures in the 70s and 60s. 64 degrees right now in boston. so as we go through tonight, clouds will stay around, lot of the showers will come to an end. cool temperatures even through tomorrow afternoon with the clouds around. then we go into wednesday, more mild, more sunshine, too. that's going to be the case as we go into thursday.

beach yesterday. as you can see, coast guard responded today to try to bring the boat to the beach and secure it. fortunately, no one was hurt. drivers are putting kids' lives at risk when they ignore the flashing lights of a stopped school bus. now one local town has a new tool to catch the violators. parkland school district in the lehigh valley installed cameras on eight buses to record drivers who pass illegally. transportation officials say it's something that happens on a regular basis. the video captures the license plate number and that gets sent to local police. fines can run from a 60-day suspension of your license by points and a $250 fine. three atlantic city casinos have to shell out more than $14,000 in fines. gaming officials charged resorts, the borgata, and tropicana with letting more than 100 underaged and addicted gamblers place bets. resorts even allowed those who banned themselves from gambling sign up for internet accounts. others forfeited the money they

>> we're following several headlines ahead of the papal weekend. in just a few minutes the pope is expect to depart holguin, cuba, for santiagsantiago, cuba. law enforcement is following a new threat tied to the pope's visit here. a document obtained by nbc news show authorities worry that terrorists may impersonate first responders, police officers, and firefighters, all to launch deadly attacks. and drivers should give themselves plenty of extra time to get around this week. no parking areas are expanding. more roads are closing as thousands arrive in philadelphia ahead of the papal visit. and those closures could mean a slower commute tonight. >> jessica boyington is monitoring our network of cameras for trouble spots. what are you seeing out there, jessi jessica? >> some spots starting to see some volume. we have closures on kelly drive

right now and also cars being towed out of the no parking zones. right now we'll start and see if it's spreading into new jersey. camden around 676, approaching the ben franklin bridge, you can see that in the back of our screen right here, toll plaza, no problems or delays there, but center city is where we're seeing delays. this is the vine street expressway around 20th street, westbound lanes giving us the most trouble. seven-minute drive time, this is typically about a two to three-minute trip from 95 to the schuylkill expressway. if you're heading to the schuylkill or 30th street station, that's where you're going to see problems right now. as for the actual schuylkill expressw expressway, parts doing okay, still in the yoellow. up towards the vine, we have a 23-minute trip. jim? >> okay, jessica. let's go back to nbc 10's tim furlong above philadelphia in sky force 10 keeping an eye on the roads, as well. looks like things are moving well where you are, tim. >> we were just saying that,

heard jessica say that, that's what you're looking at there, sku whe schuylkill expressway. we're wondering if some people are getting out of dodge if they were planning to get out of dodge for the week, but 76 as you look over as we pan over there, you sort of see this. this is mlk drive here along the west side of the river and over here is kelly drive. both are moving along in both spots right now, but back to 76, friday night at 10:00 you really need to be where you're going to go before friday at 10:00 because from the blue route across philadelphia to 95 is going to close completely. i-76 westbound to 95 to route 1 is going to close and the vine street expressway both directions. again, if you don't know the city, basically that is from the west side of the city towards going to camden and the ben franklin bridge. that's all going to close. a bit of good news here, i-95 is going to remain open and they are going to selectively close ramps.

beach island, there's a warning about pope related delays in philadelphia this weekend. >> we are hoping, you know, that we are a little busier than normal this time of year. >> reporter: jack julian has a christmas themed shop in beach haven. he and other local business owners hope to see more customers spending the coming weekend at the shore to escape the papal crowds. >> we're peaking up the staff a bit, still bringing in merchandise. >> normally regina's gourmet specialty store would close at 5:00 on saturdays, this weekend she's planning to stay open until 8:00. >> to accommodate the more people that are here kind of in the off-season that we don't normally see. >> i'm going to head down to the shore. >> reporter: amy white lives in cherry hill but will spend the weekend in ventnor instead. >> i'm hearing there's going to be a lot of traffic, including the suburbs. i'm not interested in getting caught up in that. >> reporter: also heading to the beach to avoid potential gridlock at home. >> the concern would be i would

walker has called for a news conference tonight at 6:00. the republican was once considered a front runner, but he was far behind in the polls. meanwhile, muslim civil rights activists are calling for dr. ben carson to resign from the republican race after carson said on "meet the press "yesterday he would not agree with having a muslim in the white house. listen. >> i would not advocate we put a muslim in charge of this nation. i absolutely would not agree with that. >> carson's campaign says he does not believe muslims should be barred from running, but the islamic belief system does not match american values. the council on american islamic relations believe carson's beliefs go against the u.s. constitution. a new report on obesity shows how the scales tip in pennsylvania, nurjds, and delaware. >> coming up next where your state stands and how the results differ depending on age. and we do have a few light showers around right now, but also cool temperatures.

two new studies just released new insight into what does and what does not cause problems. the first finds pregnancy complications increase the risk that a woman will die from heart disease later in life. those complications include pree clafrps ya and preterm delivery, high sugar levels and high blood pressure before pregnancy. the combination of the conditions increase the risk of heart disease death even more. and a different study finds what isn't causing damage to your heart, sex. new research finds it is very unlikely that sex can trigger a heart attack as many believe. after analyzing a large group of

patients, doctors have -- still experts say check with your doctor before resuming sexual activity. 17% of america's children are obese, according to the 12th annual state of obesity report. researchers say 30% of adults nationwide fall into the obesity category and race does factor into this. 42 states the obesity rate for african-americans tops 30%. that's only true in 13 states for whites. the most obese state in the country, arkansas. the least, california. as for new jersey, it's among the healthiest states, ranking 41st on the obesity list with 26.9% of adults classified as obese. pennsylvania ranks 20th with 30.2% of adults obese and delaware, they are at 17 with a 30.7% adult obesity rate. sheena? well, i'm tracking a few light showers, but another big cool down overnight tonight. how cool it will get and how long that will last coming up.

as we gear up for the pope francis visit here in philadelphia, nbc 10 is continuing to bring you continuing coverage so you can be part of the action in your own living room. >> to do that we are bringing back a very familiar face, terry r ruggels is back with the nbc 10 team to help bolster the coverage. terry retired three years ago after anchoring and reporting here at nbc 10 for decades and he's our own in-house pope expert. he covered the 1979 philadelphia visit of pope john paul ii. good to have you here. >> good to be here. >> coming back to help us with this coverage. 35-plus years, does it go by like that? >> sometimes yes and sometimes no, jim. i feel like a reservist that's been set up, but let me set the stage from 1979. back in 1979 you could buy a gallon of gasoline for 86 cents

a gallon, a new car for about $3,700, and everyone was all the rage about a brand new device they called the walkman. here in the tri-state area, we were all atwitter and the excitement about a brand new pope, john paul ii. the crowd outside the old convention center across the street from children's hospital was restless. the pope was running almost an hour behind schedule. patients, parents, and nurses in the hospital were craning their necks at the windows waiting to get a look at the leader of the catholic church. >> can you tell me who's coming? will you please tell me who's coming? >> the pope! >> reporter: when john paul ii blessed the hospital as he stood in his car, it was obvious that he was not coming up to see the children. >> it really was just a last minute thing. >> reporter: kay johnson, a nurse in 1979 made a decision that turned into hospital history. >> i thought, we're going downstairs. everybody said you're crazy. we're going downstairs. >> reporter: johnson led more

than a dozen patients parents, nurses, and me down to the street. >> we just wanted to be close. the crowd started saying, let the children come. let the children come. >> reporter: kay johnson and the rest of us were escorted across the street to stand right next to the convention center front doors, and within minutes pope john paul ii walked out and right over to our small band. >> he blessed each one of us, the staff included, and gave us each a rosary. and those rosaries that we got, we kept them locked up in where the narcotics were on our floor and parents would borrow them in times of need. >> reporter: johnson, a lutheran, says the pope lived in everybody's spirits, giving parents hope. and the child she was with showed improvement. >> the next day he did walk. it really was something, one of the best days of my life. >> well, kay says she'll watch this next pope from home, thank you, but that event 36 years ago is a memory she'll cherish and story she loves to keep telling.

then, of course, we're looking ahead to this weekend. the weather for the pope's visit. i'll have that coming up in just a minute. right now 67 allentown and reading. 68 degrees in pottstown, 70 in philadelphia and bensalem. much of the area was closer to the low 70s but now we've begun to drop down. and we do have a bit of light rain around, too. overcast skies, light rain has moved in from washington and that's been the general direction that we've seen our moisture move in from. we haven't seen rain in a long time. all last week we had a beautiful dry stretch, but now we're starting to feel the fall like changes. lower bucks county near florence, north hampton across 95, light to moderate rain, but it's going to move into mercer county so trenton can see the rain soon. also parts near norristown, very light rain across 476 and parts of chester county north of westchester and the lehigh valley, allentown area, monroe

county, very light rain here, too. lynn is seeing more moderate rainfall, but that's going to move away pretty soon here. pretty fast moving rain. other than that we have a pretty good northeast wind from a big area of high pressure. that's giving us cooler temperatures. it's not giving us the sunshine. we have quite a bit of moisture moving across, not heavy rain, though. as we go through the rest of the evening it's going to stay cool. the clouds will stay around and we can't rule out the chance for a light shower for later on tonight. otherwise cool to start your morning, cool tomorrow afternoon and the clouds will be here. mostly cloudy, a lot like today and into wednesday more sunshine breaking out. i don't think we'll see the showers tomorrow like we have right now. wednesday afternoon a bit of a warmup, same thing thursday afternoon and more sunshine through the middle of the week, too. and then we start to cool down as we go back into the weekend. for tonight, around 52 degrees for allentown, mostly cloudy. 52 for reading for the overnight low. 56 doylestown, 58 degrees mount
