today is the day the world turns its eyes to philadelphia. the world meetings of families including a visit from the pope. and pope francis is a man on the move. he arrived in the united states today. we'll break down his itinerary. and sweater weather. we're waking up to a fall chill in the air. the last official day of summer. it is 4:00 a.m. good morning. this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. let's get to meteorologist brittney shipp with her first alert forecast, talk about the chill in the air. >> there is a chill in the air. we're tracking a few showers mainly through allentown and into the poconos, so really depends where you are. not everyone is seeing this light rainfall. keep your umbrella handy.

we'll see light showers the next few hours so if you are an early riser and heading out the door soon, that's something you'll need. you won't need your umbrella later. by 8:00, 9:00, all of these showers should be done. we're going to see a few clouds lingering, a mix of sun and clouds for fill as we get toward the afternoon. looks like we'll see mostly cloudy skies remaining closer to south jersey and along the shore. a closer look at our current temperatures show we're on the mild side at 65 degrees, it's a cool start to the morning in chester springs at 56. 58 pottstown, 58 in reading, in the low 50s in the poconos, 59 degrees in allentown and as we take a closer look along the shoreline, 61 in woodbine, 62 at the atlantic city airport. so for today our temperatures range between 72 and 75. showers to the north of the city expected at least through 8:00, 9:00, and cooler conditions in store. i'm tracking what's in store for

the first day of fall, that will be tomorrow. that's coming up in my full forecast. now let's check in with first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. good morning. >> good morning. we're on the schuylkill expressway right now. from our cameras around spring garden street, you can see we have police activity in here. it's road work so that's over into the right-hand shoulder, part of that right-hand lane blocked. traffic moves through the area on the westbound side. watch out for that. we're going to talk about pope closures now. kelly drive, closed until tuesday, the 29th after the papal visit and the ben franklin parkway was closed to art museum circle to logan circle, no parking around that area between about 12th and 25th. so north and south, there will be signs posted. we'll go over the parking restrictions when i come back. >> a global audience is waking up in philadelphia the world meeting of families begins.

tens of thousands are here for the largest catholic family gathering. matt delucia is live with a look at what's happening. walk us through what's going to happen. >> reporter: events are here at the convention center. more than 17,000 people, pilgrims from around the world are attending the world meeting of families and coming from more than 100 countries. the goal of this is to celebrate family, love and life. here is a look at some of the preparations yesterday at the convention center. the stage is set to welcome the world. today there is a news conference with the archbishop and the opening ceremony at 1:00 inside the grand hall that will feature performances, and set a world record for the most contributions to a mural painting where pilgrims grab a paint brush and at 4:30 a mass to begin the week, a week which will wend a much larger mass on

the ben franklin parkway this sunday that will be led by pope francis. this is the first time the world meeting of families is being held in the u.s., and the expectation is that a record setting crowd will be here for the event we'll hear from some of the folks who came to town for this in the next half hour. live outside the convention center, matt delucia, "nbc 10 news." >> meantime, pope francis will be on the move. he will depart cuba for the u.s. a trip that will bring him here to philadelphia this weekend. vai sikahema is live in our digital operations center. vai, talk about when the pope is expected to leave cuba and head to the u.s. >> the pope is spending his final hours in cuba and the papal flight from havana to the washington, d.c. area is expected to take off by early this afternoon, it is due to arrive at joint base andrews in maryland at about 4:00 this afternoon. president obama will greet the pope as he arrives on american soil for the first time, and you're looking at the two

meeting at the vatican march of last year. an official welcoming ceremony at the white house is set for tomorrow morning. here is a look at the pope's schedule. he arrives in washington later today, tomorrow he will celebrate mass in d.c., then on thursday address a joint session of congress before traveling to new york city. on friday the pope will address the u.n. general assembly, visit the world trade center and offer mass there, then on saturday morning the pontiff will arrive in philadelphia for his two-day visit. the pope's final full day in cuba started, he celebrated mass and gave a special blessing there. the pope ended in santiago where he met with local bishops, cubans and cuban americans hope the attention he has brought will linger. >> cuban people need help. they need relinen, they need love, peace. >> we've already seen it. cuba will open to the world and

smart phones and tablets. about 4:08. 64 degrees. a firefighter suffered a minor injury responding to a fire at this apartment near chestnut and jenkins avenue. everyone in made it out safely. investigators are looking into what caused the fire. it is a midair mystery. aviation officials now say they don't know what caused the emergency aboard a flight that got diverted to philadelphia. american airlines plane head from charlotte to hartford made an emergency landing. sky force 10 was over when it landed. no one was hurt. american airlines put the passengers on another plane. last night officials said a bird struck the windshield but then they said that was not the case. today is no national voter registration kay. the library system is helping voters get to the ballot box. four branches of the library offer personal help how to

properly complete and mail in the form. they are joining other county offices to encourage more residents to register. in montgomery county officials will sign a pledge to end veterans homelessness. the county commissioners will join veterans advocates to try to reduce the number of veterans who are homeless. the signing ceremony is scheduled for the v.a. vet center in norristown. yom kippur is the holiest day on the jewish calendar begins tonight. a day of atonement, a time for jews to confess sins to god and ask forgiveness. fasting is part of the observance. yom kippur concludes the high holy days that began with rosh hashanah. good morning. as we head into the rest of today more of the same in terms of a cool start and close to average temperatures so a fall chill is in the air for us.

53 degrees now in the poconos, 59 in allentown, waking up in pottstown it's 58, mid-60s in philadelphia, 63 in northeast philly, 62 in millville where it's 63 in wildwood and 62 at the atlantic city airport. here is a closer look at your bus stop forecast. by 7:00 a.m. temperatures in our suburbs in the north and west closer to 54 degrees, 2:00 p.m. when you pick the kids up around 70 degrees for philadelphia, 61 more on the mild side, 73 by 2:00 and for the suburbs 62. not too bad toward the afternoon but a light jacket will probably be needed this morning right around 7:00 a.m. satellite/radar shows mostly cloudy skies, we're dealing with scattered showers moving up from the southwest. that's affecting parts of lancaster county, berks county into the lehigh valley area and a few isolated showers near the poconos. that should clear up as we get into the late morning hours so at least by 10:00 a.m.

everything should be dry. closer look, warmer midweek, our average is 76, as we head into the rest of today 74. wednesday we go back above average but we don't stay there, we're going up and down with our temperatures but staying close to average. i'll show you your seven-day forecast coming up in about 10 minutes. 11 minutes past 4:00. let's check traffic the papal parking restrictions as a lot of people realize they have to move their car, can't get around a certain way. jessica boyington is watching that. >> cars are starting to be towed all over the place. this is something you want to pay attention to. the papal parking restrictions, in the yellow, pretty much around the ben franklin park way where we have road closures as it is. several blocks north and south of that where we have those parking restrictions in effect. now, the area in the turquoise is no parking starting today at 6:00 p.m. there is going to be more added. by wednesday, by 9:00 a.m. there

will be additional streets added, so random streets up and down around the area, you do want to pay attention to signs if you see them posted. and if your car is towed or has been towed, 591-3636 is what you want to call and they will get that sorted out for you. as we look at the rest of our area roadways, yesterday afternoon for the drive home the vine street expressway is where we saw all of the overflow from the closures. you can see now no problems around 24th street westbound, the drive time of three minutes toward the schuylkill expressway. for months people across the area have been preparing for the pope which includes preparing the communion for the masses. katy is live with that story. >> reporter: it sounds like an incredible feat, giving communion to hundreds of thousands of people at the same time. this morning i'm learning more how that's going to be done. >> trouble in paradise. watch as a day at the beach

can see preparations for the papal visit have reached the cathedral basilica, much of the parkway is closed to traffic and tonight at 6:00 p.m., a new round of parking restrictions begins. now, unless you have this placard which you had to buy before now, you have to move your car if it's in the restricted area. and new no parking rules go into effect tonight at 6:00. for old city, market east and the independence hall area. that placard allows drivers to keep their car in the restricted area until thursday night. then it has to be moved. now, back out live, where i'm standing between the cathedral and the philadelphia museum of art, you cannot park here. this, however, is where upwards of one million people are expected for the papal mass this coming weekend. and for 5:00 i'm working on a story about how they are going to serve communion to all of those people. they really have a plan on how they are going to get it done.

that's at 5:00. reporting live along the parkway, katy zachry, "nbc 10 news." >> retired general david petraeus is street appear before the senate armed services committee to talk about u.s. policy in the middle east. officials say lawmakers will likely ask petraeus about his views on how to defeat isis. the hearing marks the return to the spotlight for the disgraced former cia director sentenced and fined earlier this year for sharing classified information with his mistress. we now have video showing the moment a florida school bus driver crashed into a pond last week. this camera shows the bus speeding toward the guard gate before narrowly missing it, then a splash. no children were hurt. a number of factors could have led to the crash including speed. this is what it looked like after. investigators still working to determine a cause. the driver is now suspended with pay pending the results of the investigation. chaos on the shores of rio

de janeiro at a beach there, a spike in robberies causing panic among tourists. a television station's camera captured this robbery in the middle of a crowded beach. investigators say groups of young people are grabbing phones, jewelry and other valuables before taking off in the crowd. the police department is increasing the number of officers and helicopters patrolling the beaches. good morning. temperatures today expected to stay a little below average once again so the fall-like chill continues. fall officially starts toxt we're going to continue to see dry conditions and also a little warmer over the next couple of days. plus, i'll have a closer look at your pope forecast as we push closer to the weekend. right now a live look outside for philadelphia where it's 65 degrees. under mostly clear skies. a few clouds toward the philadelphia area. our humidity at 63%, wind speeds

out of the northwest or northeast i should say, right around 7 miles per hour. across the rest of the region we're at 58 in pottstown, 67 in georgetown, so quite a big temperature difference about 10 degrees between the suburbs and the shore. a closer look for the poconos at 53, 62 in dover, 62 degrees in wilmington and wildwood right now at 63 degrees. our satellite/radar shot shows we'll see mainly dry conditions but we're tracking a few little scattered showers moving up through washington, d.c., baltimore, pushing into parts of the lehigh valley and also into the poconos. this should start to break down and go away closer to 9, 10:00 in the morning. i'll show you on our future cast. you can see this model suggests that over the next few hours deal with be with showers but closer to 9:00 a.m., that should be clearing out. we'll see a lot of sunshine for this part of town. mount pocono into allentown and reading by 5:00 p.m. we're

seeing the clouds clearing up, we'll see a mix of sun and clouds from philadelphia but mostly cloudy skies expected for atlantic city, and south jersey and then as we push into tuesday, wednesday, or wednesday i should say, we stay dry. highs 867 degrees in the poconos, 74 in allentown, at 73 in quakertown, closer to doylestown 72 degrees today. along the shoreline in the low to mid 70s. and then for philadelphia we're calling for a high of 74 degrees. the seven-day forecast shows that we warm up a little as we head into tomorrow and also thursday, we drop back down in the 70s friday. let's check the ride to work including 295. heading out the door early this morning. what are you seeing? >> we're watching construction on 295 around the black horse pike, something we're used to but sometimes this is active. right now very active scene. we have one lane funneled through the area. actually in either direction,
