coming to america. in about an hour, pope francis will be on his way to the usa. good morning, i'm vai sikahema. pope francis is wrapping up his trip on cuba calling on cubans to rediscover their catholic heritage and launch a revolution of tenderness. it's a reference to the 1959 revolution that installed an atheist communist country in the country. here's a look at santiago, cuba, where pope francis is meeting with families in the cathedral of our lady of assumption. there's a choir singing right now. he bless the city from outside

of the cathedral. the pope's plane is scheduled to depart santiago, cuba, for washington at about 12:30 this afternoon. pope francis celebrated mass in cuba's holiest shrine earlier this morning. president raul castro received the holy father at the basilica of the virgin of charity of pauvre. it was the latest in a series of carefully worded critiques during his four-day trip there. later today, president obama will greet the pope as he arrives on american soil for the first time. you're looking at the two leaders meeting at the vatican in march of last year. the president will greet the pope at the airport today and then there will be a special ceremony at the white house tomorrow morning. and here's the pope's schedule this week. he arrives in washington around 4:00 this afternoon. tomorrow afternoon pope francis will celebrate mass in d.c. on thursday he'll address a joint session of congress before

traveling to new york city. on friday the pope will address the u.n. general assembly, visit the world trade center and say mass. then on saturday morning, the pontiff will arrive in philadelphia for his two day visit. thousands of people are gathering for the start of the world meeting of families right now. the event that's bringing pope francis through philadelphia this weekend kicks off shortly. here's a live look at where all the action is happening. the pennsylvania convention center in center city, philadelphia. that's where nbc 10's jesse gary is live for us. jesse, what's the atmosphere? it looks like lots of people. >> vai, i tell you what, for anyone who would like to experience people and cultures from across the globe but don't want to travel across the globe, this is the place to be. a sea of pilgrims is making its way to and through the convention center. unlike other gatherings where temper cans grow short, people are enthused, energized, ready for this conference to begin. >> it's like a taste of heaven.

welcome pope francis on his first visit to the united states. >> everybody is thrilled. everybody is so proud. >> reporter: the three city six-day journey begin this is afternoon in washington where the pontiff will meet with president obama and address congress. but he'll also bless the city's homeless at this catholic charities. next stop, new york, the united nations and the 9/11 memorial. but philadelphia is the centerpiece of this visit. that's where he'll lead more than a million people in an outdoor mass on sunday to close the world meeting of families. these pilgrims are traveling 800 miles by bus from chicago. >> he's so warm and so loving and he wants to talk to the whole world. >> reporter: pope francis is an inspiration and a symbol but also to some a target. the secret service has been working with vatican security for months. >> he likes to, for example, see babies and talk to handicapped individuals so we have a good sense of his movements.

festival of families and the papal mass. visitors coming into town for all the papal events, will they enjoy nice weather on this last full day of summer? inquiring minds want to know. brittney shipp is here with the forecast. hi, brittney. >> hi. well this final day of summer temperatures will be below average and the first day of fall we'll be above average so things changing over the next couple days. but 53 in the poconos, 63 in allentown. 67 in philadelphia. 70 degrees in millville. temperatures in wild wood at 70 and 72 in atlantic city. so kind of a mild start to the day. it's also a great start. we're seeing mostly cloudy skies and a few little sprinkles moving through parts of the poconos right now. also to the north of allentown. we're seeing some showers die down and over the next hour or so we should finally dry all the way out for the entire area. so staying cool on this final day of summer.

the list of republican contenders is down to 15. scott walker announced he is dropping out of the race. walker started out as a front-runner in iowa but his campaign doe in additions all but dried up after poor performances in two presidential debates. he is the second candidate to exit the race after former texas governor rick perry. yesterday he called on other gop contenders who are falling behind the follow his lead. >> i encourage other republican presidential candidates to consider doing the same so that the voters can focus on a limited number of candidates who can offer a positive, conservative alternative to the current front-runner. >> the latest poll numbers chaput donald trump nine points ahead of carly fiorina. meantime, dr. ben carson is facing calls to drop out of the race after he said a muslim president should not be in the oval office but despite the criticism, carson stands by his remarks. >> i don't care what a person's

religious background is if, in fact, they believe in our constitution and our american values. i would support them. >> a june gallup poll found 38% of americans surveyed would not support a muslim candidate for president. 60% said they would. republican presidential candidate carly fiorina appeared on the "tonight show" starring jimmy fallon last night. the former hewlett-packard executive saw a big jump in her poll numbers following her performance in last week's debate. fiorina joked donald trump and russian president vladimir putin had a lot in common. she talked about meeting putin at a conference. >> i would describe him as a formidable adversary. he's very confident, he's very -- he can be quite funny and charming. is but he's a kbg guy, we should

never forget this. >> fiorina says she disagreed with the current administration on engaging in talks with putin. she addressed the ben carson controversy and said she'd be fine with a muslim president. and democratic presidential candidate hillary clinton will lay out a plan this afternoon to rein in the rising cost of prescription drugs. her proposal will cap out-of-pocket costs, kill tax breaks for direct to consumer advertising and encourage the development of cheaper generic drugs. yesterday clinton tweeted a link to a "new york times" article about steep drug prices and called the situation outrageous. that action sent biotech stocks tumbling on wall street. it was a jailbreak straight out of the movies, but now two inmates are back behind bars after they allegedly used their bed sheets to escape. officials say the inmates tied together bed sheets and used them as a rope to escape off the roof of the kentucky correctional center where they were being held. the inmates escaped at around

9:00 last night and they were captured just before 3:00 this morning. new video this morning shows a kayaker fending off an aggressive hammer head shark. this encounter happened saturday as the kayaker fished off the shore of santa barbara. you see it here. a gopro camera mounted on the kay kayaker's head shows him hit the shark with his oar as the shark keeps circling around the kayak. this whole incident lasted about 15 minutes. the fisherman said he hit the shark about 20 times before the shark eventually swam away. heading into the rest of today on the final day of summer temperatures will stay below average. we are tracking dry and warmer weather into the next couple days then i'm tracking the possibility of weekend showers. i'll let you know, i'll show you why it's uncertain weather.

it's still early but it will definitely affect the pope's visit. a look outside seeing mostly cloudy skies. temperatures in philadelphia at 67, humidity is at 57%. wind speeds are breezy out of the northeast at about 15 miles per hour. that cooler northeasterly wind will help keep temperatures down a bit today. we're seeing sunshine peeking through in allentown where earlier we saw a few showers. now 63, atlantic city at 72 with mostly cloudy skies. philadelphia seeing mostly cloudy skies as well but in the afternoon we should see a little more sunshine again. 53 degrees in the poconos. 63 in allentown. 26 in reading. temperatures close to 70 degrees already in dover. 70 in millville and we're at 70 degrees closer to cape may. live radar shows we're still dealing with a few stubborn lingering showers mainly confined to the poconos. everywhere else is dried out. as we go into the rest of today,

you'll see clouds clearing but a little chance of showers closer to atlantic city as we head into our evening hours. by wednesday we see everything clearing up, more sunshine expected for us. this is something we'll watch carefully as we get closer to the weekend. we have the area of low pressure off the carolina coast. it could just sit here, that's what some models are suggesting. others are suggesting it will head to the north. if it does it will bring us light rainfall as we get into overnight hours saturday heading into sunday. so right now we'll go with saturday, 37 degrees, breezy and cool but by sunday we have a slight chance of showers right now and our temperatures will be closer to 74. >> just a light chance. if that changes we'll let you know but stick with us over the next couple days when we firm up the forecast. as far as today is concerned, 66 degrees will be the high. 73 in allentown. 74 in quakertown. right along the shoreline we see low 70s. closer to philadelphia 74

morning. happening now, a news conference with archbishop charles chay chaput a is happening right now. the first gathering of the international gatherings of catholics is happening and jesse gary is live inside the pennsylvania convention center. jesse, how are people able to make their way to philadelphia? >> well, there's an army of volunteers to advise and guide. there's a sea of people. this is a registration line. many of the volunteers speak at least two, sometimes three, four languages. that is needed. there are pilgrims here from every corner of the globe. i've spoken to people from as far away as australia all the way to west africa. >> incredibly helpful to have people on site who have been able to speak other languages and help pilgrims who maybe this is the first time in the united

states with the language issues of getting settled. >> it's a herculean tasks from volunteers. volunteers from states, countries, other hemisphere, all here for the week long meeting of families. each registrant is given a clear plastic backpack. they contain essential items like maps and a water bottle as well as information on events around philadelphia during the conference. they'll take in the sites as they keep their sites set on the goal of this convention -- celebrate family, love, and life, something many say is not easy in the current climate. >> so many issues are facing families globally and and it's nice to get together with families from all over the world to see, you know, what issues are you facing back home and how are we tackling these as catholics? we have to stand for what we believe and sometimes it's a bit hard. >> one of the things that she says stand out most for cher the problem with protecting her

for a st. louis boy living with a brain tumor. he gets to meet pope francis in philadelphia this very weekend. 12-year-old brett hallbrick was diagnosed with a brain tumor last year. he went through rounds of chemotherapy and radiation and says his battle with cancer sidelined him from playing his favorite game -- football. but he says it opened his eyes to faith. >> to appreciate how god, like, gave me the recovery, like he gave me such a good recovery. like a lot of kids don't have that. >> reporter: so well spoken. brett received tickets to see the pope from the archdiocese of philadelphia while serving as priest for a day earlier this year. he's traveling from missouri later this week with his mother and his father. good job, brett. here's the pope's schedule this week. he arrives in washington around 4:00 this afternoon, tomorrow afternoon pope francis will celebrate mass in d.c. on thursday he'll address a joint session of congress before traveling on to new york city.

as he l will begin his u.s. tou. we'll be there for his arrival in the nation's capital and follow his journey will which will bring him here to philadelphia this weekend. now to the migrant crisis in europe. a european union official is optimistic that a deal will be made later today to share 120,000 refugees in greece, italy, and perhaps hungary among other e.u. countries. meantime, migrants scuffle with police at a transit camp near the croatian/serbian border. the migrants and refugees crowded at the reception center to be registered and continue to travel toward northern europe and police had no success in maintaining order there. as e.u. ministers meet and brussels to address the crisis, hundreds of thousands continue to flow from war torn areas in the middle east, in africa, asia, all trying to get to europe. .

a montgomery county community is issuing e-tickets instead of paper ones. the goal is to make traffic stops faster and safer. it's called the e-ticket program and abington police say it drastically cuts the time officers are needed on dangerous or busy roads. once an officer scans the ticketed person's driver's license, the driver is entered into a system. a hard copy is sent to the driver and the courts and officials say this prevents drivers from losing tickets or saying that they never got one. >> we don't to worry about data entry errors on the police officers' part or recordkeeping. >> all departments in pennsylvania will eventually be required to use the system. meanwhile, today is national voter registration day and the camden county library system is helping voters get to the ballot box on election time. four branches of the camden county library are offering personal help on how to properly complete and mail in forms.

they're joining forces with other county offers to encourage more residents to register to vote. new information about the arrival of apple's new iphone 6s and 6s plus. they're set to be released in stores this friday. but the pope's visit could delay the arrival of those pre-ordered phones. tech experts say tightened security for papal visits to new york and washington and philadelphia could leave some phones -- some new iphones sitting in delivery trucks. delivery services like u.p.s. are expecting shipment delays because of road closures. and volkswagen now says 11 million diesel cars with fitted with software at the center of a u.s. emissions scandal and it is setting aside more than $7 billion to cover the fallout. the automaker's north american ceo says he's confident volkswagen will restore customer confidence. vw stock fell nearly 20%

the sun sets and closer to 6:00 p.m. we have another chance of a few sprinkles closer to atlantic city before everything clears up overnight tonight which will give us plenty of sunshine tomorrow plus we have high pressure strengthening so we will see temperatures going up a bit pushing into tomorrow. so here's the breakdown. that will be a mild start to fall. 76 is our average today, below average today, above average tomorrow for the first day of fall and we stay there heading into thursday. one thing we want to keep a close eye on is this area of low pressure off the carolina coast. we'll see what happens to it. it could stay where it is well to the south of us but if it starts to shift northward, that's going to give us a chance of showers as we head into sunday so one of the models is suggesting that some of the other models are not. so the uncertainty is pretty great. we're still really far out from sunday but right now at least one model is giving us a slight chance of showers as we head into sunday and that could last throughout most of the day. on saturday we look to stay dry,
