pope francis touches down in the u.s., already rewriting the history books during what is certain to be a week full of firsts. good evening, i'm jacqueline london, some of that history could unfold right here in philadelphia. as pope francis prepares to visit the world meeting of families which is already underway. he arrives in philly on saturday, but tonight this is where he's sleeping. t that is the vatican's equivalent of an embassy. ♪ >> while the pope sleeps in washington tonight, thousands of his followers are now in our area preparing for his visit. the world meeting of families conference began today and for the thousands in attendance it's been a long time coming. george spencer was at the world meetings this evening. he's live tonight at the

pennsylvania convention center in center city. >> the anticipation is over the world meeting of families is now underway. i talked tonight to one woman who had been planning her trip to philadelphia for eight full mont months. and the impact of the arrival of pope francis in the united states did not disappoint. in the halls of the convention center, the procession and grand song of world meeting of families opening mass. >> a crowd of thousands joining to worship here as their leader arrived in washington, d.c.. >> very emotional. >> we watched that american arrival with a francis can monk from ethiopia eager to hear the pope here in philadelphia.

>> the city of brotherly love. >> are we living up to it? >> yes, the people are very -- >> for me it's very exciting, moving, there's a lot of emotion. >> maria ward of michigan is one of the many younger visitors we saw in this crowd attending mass among thousands of faithful tonight and preparing for workshops tomorrow. for some, simply getting here from their homeland was a challenge. >> we were 150 to get visa. but only 25 people. >> only 25 of you made it here. >> we found some locals enjoying the congress and excited about the coming days. >> it's tremendous,s the whole event is an unbelievable experience. >> i'm one of the lucky ones that got a ticket. >> you're looking forward to saturday then?

victor who served as a trustee at catholic university with charles shapew confident that he will enjoy his stay in the city of brotherly love. >> pope francis will be here on thursday, it will be the first time that the leader of the catholic church will address a joint session of congress. many of the faithful hope their lawmaker will listen to and act upon his message. reporting from capitol hill, i'm rosemary conyers, nbc news. >> another round of towing begins in center city. this latest round of restrictions began at 6:00 p.m. following days of towing in other parts of center city. if you are towed, expect a 76 dollar ticket. the no parking area is about to expand beginning at 9:00 tomorrow morning, any vehicles

parked on routes will be towed that's in addition to the yellow area parking enforcement you see on your screen. another sign of what's to come in the streets of philadelphia. nbc10 at 18th and market tonight as please escorted several trucks hauling security barriers, they're going up in advance of the pope's arrival on saturday. mayor nutter is making sure taxpayers realize they won't be paying for the papal visit. nutter reiterated today the world meeting of families will reimburse the city for the cost of the events. the two sides stating exactly that. it's estimated the papal weekend will cost the city $12 million, a detailed breakdown shows 4.9 rqh[)q(artment.the police and that includes traffic and crowd control. along with security and emergency control. 3.9 million is for the fire department, that includes

medical service and emergency response. our cameras were there today as a woman questioned the mayor about the pope's cost. >> we're not paying for the pope. we're not paying for the pope. >> according to the contract, the world meeting of families has to reimburse the city by november 30th. here's a closer look at the pope's schedule in the coming days as we told you earlier, pope francis heads to the white house tomorrow where he will meet with the president. on thursday, pope francis addresses congress, he'll fly to new york city. he addresses the united nations general assembly. have a procession through central park and hold mass at madison square garden. on saturday, the pope arrives in philadelphia where he will speak at independence mall. don't expect a speech full of standing ovations when pope francis addresses congress. both the democrats and

republicans have asked their fellow lawmakers not to rise and applaud while the pope speaks. they're trying to avoid the partisan applause you see during the state of the union. lawmakers have been told to refrain from trying to shake the pope's hand when he enters and exits the chambers. the nbc10 app has everything you'll need to get ready for the visit. you'll find a list of no parking areas. road closures and mass transit changes. this video of the pope's arrival is getting national buzz. it's all because of the car pope francis rode off in. the reason behind the choice of wheels and why americans are so fascinated. ♪ the pope's arrival cone sides with one of the holiest days on the jewish calendar.

it's known as the jewish day of atonement. turning to the weather, it is a cool night. nbc10 on main street in manyunk, where we did find people walking around in short sleeves and shorts, others might have been more comfortable in a jacket. sheena parveen is tracking the cooler temperatures, how is it going to feel when we wake up tomorrow. >> if you need a light jacket this morning, you'll need one tomorrow morning too. the clouds we had around are clearing, that's allowing temperatures to cool down. already 57 in allentown, 58 pottstown and reading, 67 in philadelphia, mid-60s millville, low 60s at the atlantic city airport. tomorrow morning, if you're around the philadelphia area, we'll be around 60 degrees by 8:00 in the morning. 50 in the poconos by 8:00 a.m. if you're along the shore, 60 grows, by noon we should be in the low 70s for most areas already. in the poconos by noon, mid-60s.

delaware woman is behind bars tonight charged with raping and abusing a teenaged boy at a group home. she's facing ten counts of first degree rape, she had been involved with a 17-year-old male at a group home. she worked at the home prior to her arrest about the 32-year-old is being hold at the north baylor correctional facility. shape up or ship out that's chris christie's message to the state's national guard leader. michael coniff has been given 90 days to lose weight. christie's decree comes after the pentagon reprimanded coniff.

the pope rides in one. >> i think it's a good car, it's from italy, and it's also under stated but a very nice vehicle. >> in maple shade, keith jones, nbc10 news. >> he may be blessed with increased sales.pope was driving off in d.c. i'm sure he's enjoying the weather here also in d.c. he'll be enjoying it for the rest of his time there. we're talking about cool weather for the pope's arrival. until we get to the weekend, we have a warm start to fall, the first day of fall is officially tomorrow. we're going to be warmer than we were today. temperatures drop back down, and we are tracking some possible rain chances for part of the weekend. i'll show you that in a minute. the average high now is 76 degrees. we got to 75. tomorrow will be up to 80. so well above what we consider normal now, and as we go into

thursday, still around 80, and dropping back down. as we go toward the end of the week. right now we're cooling down, 57 right now in allentown. 58 in reading, pottstown much 67 in philadelphia. about the mid to low 60s through south jersey and delaware. the clouds are clearing up too, that's going to help temperatures drop even more tonight. areas north and west will be around 50 degrees. you see it's dry. the clouds hanging on to our shore points. that will be moving out and setting up for a sunny day tomorrow. there is moisture there. and we are watching that as we get closer to the weekend. watch what the models do, they slowly bring this moisture to the north as we go into saturday afternoon, it's going to be staying south of us, i expect saturday to be a dry and cool day, then we go into sunday. it really starts to edge up toward the area, but just barely to our south. there is a chance we could see a few showers sunday, i think the best chance will be south of philadelphia. at this point we have quite a few days until we get there.

the models could change and bring this rain further north. we'll be updating that forecast as we get closer to the weekend. as of saturday so far for the papal visit, dry, cool, mid 70s for sunday. chance of showers mainly south of philadelphia. we'll be tweaking that, temperatures staying in the 70s. around 50 for a low in allentown, upper 50s for philadelphia. 59 for atlantaic city. 57 millville, 60 in dover. for the first day of fall, mostly sunny, warmer day, sun will be rising close to 7:00 a.m., setting just before 7:00 p.m. we are looking at the shore today, light hours, temperatures will be warmer, 80 degrees tomorrow and thursday. we cool down for the weekend. watching all those rain chances, john. the phillies decide on their new manager going-forward. the eagles could be without three defensive players sunday. did the cowboys stop the eagles
