studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. and good morning, everyone. welcome to today on a friday morning. beautiful view of st. patrick's cathedral just across fifth avenue from us here, and, boy, let's talk for a second, because the images last night were amazing. the pope arriving in new york city for the first time ever. thousands of people lining the streets. there he is in the popemobile. he walked down the center aisle of that newly refurbished cathedral, and it was spectacular. >> it was an electric moment inside that hall, and we were lucky enough to get to be there and watch him walk in and to hear the applause and to feel the energy that he brought into that room. >> timothy cardinal dolan asked me and savannah to be the master of ceremonies at a program that preceded the pope's arrival because people had to get to that kathd durcathedral because security and we introduced speakers and then we had amazing

seats for the prayer service. >> and then we had a moment we'll never forget. we got to shake hands with pope francis, he's as warm as you can imagine, and i have to say this was a moment for us, matt, but what i keep thinking about is right as he passed me, and these nuns just hugged him and he really stood there, spent a moment with them there, and their faces right afterwards were just filled with joy. >> yeah. they are saying something in my ear right now. videos are great, but sometimes still photos capture a moment even better. we have some photos from the vatd can photographer's. >> that's amazing. >> and they just sent those to us this morning. >> savannah, you wondered if any of this was captured on camera. >> wow. >> what an honor. >> there's a good photo right there, and our thanks to everyone at st. patrick's and certainly kimothy cardinal dolan. >> we're reflecting the pope's glow there. so honor to get to have that moment. so many people are having these moments with the pope as he

spends these days in our country and here in new york he's here for a couple of days and will go on to philadelphia. and we have to say his itinerary is jam-packed. >> getting it all covered on the first stop of this day, a speech before world leaders at the u.n. that's where we find nbc national correspondent peter alexander. peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, matt, good morning to you. in washington pope francis was really speaking to congress and the american people, but today he will be addressing the world. this is going to be the largest most powerful gathering ever under one roof. there isn't a bigger international stage than this. the 70th anniversary of the united nations, 170 world leaders will be here. presidents, prime ministers, kings and queens, and this is just the fourth pope ever to speak before the u.n. this morning his holiness is enjoying his first ever visit to new york city. >> papa francisco, welcome to st. patrick's cathedral. >> pope francis receiving a warm welcome from timothy cardinal dolan at a prayer vigil at the

flags are like this right now. there is the vatican and the none member flags. they will let him be himself throughout the city of new york as he wants to touch and experience this city and certainly the spirit of the people throughout it as well. >> peter alexander a little less than a mile from us here at the u.n., thank you very much. >> pope francis is staying at the vatican mission to the u.n. and that's on the city's upper east side and nbc's stephanie gosk is here this morning for us. >> reporter: good morning to you. anybody looking at this security and thinking maybe i'll wander down and catch a quick glimpse of the pope sipping his espresso, they are going to be disappointed. this is a security presence like nothing i have ever sean in new york. you have the streets blockaded three blocks north and south and two avenues wide. they have sand trucks.

there's a law enforcement presence here and when we arrived here this morning, hundreds of police officers behind our camera position here getting ready for their orders of the day and as we mentioned the pope is staying in the townhouse here at 19th century townhouse, actually very typical for this very wealthy neighborhood of new york city. it was owned by a 19th century mayor, and we're told that they actually had to update the wiring and the plumbing for the pope's visit. now, we're not exactly sure when the pope is going to be leaving for the u.n. he's expected there at around 8:30, and we will see that motorcade leave, although you can expect they are probably not going to run into any traffic. guys, back to you. >> all right. stephanie gosk, thank you so much. let's bring in nbc special anchor maria shriver and greg burke, senior communications adviser to the vatican. good morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> greg, let me start with you. yesterday we watched and listened as the pope addressed a joint meeting of congress, a very political room. today he heads to the u.n. it's a broader audience, a world

audience, seems to be right in his sweet spot. what are you expecting in terms of the difference between the two speeches? >> it will be similar. it just goes global. i think the issues, when you look at pope and what he really cares about, above all wealth and poverty and, well, above all, he cares about a spiritual mission, god loves you, right, but the ramifications of that, share that love, show that love meaning let's fix this wealth and poverty situation in the world. that's got to be a key issue. immigration, migration obviously. people talk a lot about immigration in this country, but if you've seen the news the last week, as i'm sure you have, it's monstrous in europe as well moving from africa, from the middle east into europe. immigration, migration will be an issue, and climate change is as well. i find it interesting, one little thing on climate change. pope benedict spoke allotted about it and never got a lot of attention. a book written, "pope benedict

and the environment" and he was called the green pope, but obviously with pope francis, the microphone is on and people are listening a lot more. >> maria, you've been tracking every step of this journey from washington, now to new york on to philadelphia. so you know something. energy that it takes. can you imagine being this 78-year-old pope with one lung who has been giving so much and kept this incredible schedule. how do you think he is doing as this week goes along and what he might be experiencing as a human being as well as a pope? >> he obviously has incredible stamina. he gets up and prays, and i think he gets energy from people. and he spoke at st. patrick's, you both were there, you were no. maybe you were, i wasn't, but he spoke about hard work and gratitude and whether we count our blessings in our daily lives. i thought that that was really terrific because he's been very pastoral this whole week in what he's kind of urged us all to look at our lives, no matter where he's spoken and i bet he does that again today at the

u.n., but he seems to be getting energy from the crowds. >> i'm looking forward to seeing the pope down at the 9/11 memorial and museum because the attacks of 9/11 were the antithesis to everything that pope francis preaches about, mutual respect and understanding, compassion, anti-violence, the ability to live without fear. how do you think that visit is going to impact him? >> yeah. you're right, and there are two cultures he talks a lot about, the culture of encounter, how do we overcome our differences, the polarization and that can be between individuals, between neighbors, between countries and the throwaway culture, you know, people being left behind, whether that goes from the unborn, to the elderly to those starving to death. i think -- i think it will be, you know, as maria was saying, i think there's a little bit of the wow factor here. he gets his energy from the people, the newness of the united states, but this will be -- this will be a -- this will be moving for him because it is exactly the opposite of what he -- everything he

believes in. there's some issues which really gets him, human trafficking right now, you know. it's just like he -- human trafficking, human slavery, the fact that this kind of thing is going on really moves him very deeply. >> people will be moved that he's visiting with what many of us considered hallowed ground. greg burke from the vatican, maria, thank is o you as always. more from maria including what the pope does when we're not seeing him. >> republican front-runner donald trump took time from his campaign to get a glimpse of the motorcade from the balcony of trump tower. today he heads to washington where things could get very interesting at an event also featuring his latest target. nbc's hallie jackson has more on that. hi, hallie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. this morning donald trump and marco rubio will both be in washington, both at same event speaking a few hours apart f.trump's attacks allweek and

overnight tweets are any indication he'll take aim at rubio and rubio is not taking that sitting down. after getting the trump treat again -- >> marco rubio, he's like a kid. >> reporter: and again. >> he sweats more than any young person i've ever seen in my life. >> reporter: and again. >> i've never seen a guy down water like he downs water, never see -- they bring it in in buckets for this guy. >> reporter: marco rubio is firing back. >> they thin-skinned, very sensitive to creditcism but he can't have a conversation about policy because quite frankly he doesn't know anything about policy. >> reporter: it's a forceful new fl flou flouriflurry of attacks from the front-runner hitting harder than before. >> he had a really bad debate performance last week. he's not really informed on the issues. he really never is good on the issues and can't have more than a ten-seco dasten-second conver.

>> reporter: fox news' ceo roger ails will come face-to-face next week to come to a candid meeting to handle any misunderstandings. for now trump is boycotting the network and his rivals rolling their eyes. >> if i quit talking to all the people who attacked me, i would have crawled under a rock long ago. >> reporter: it's not just fox news. trump is also complaining about coverage of empty chairs at one of his events this week. trump is still on top of the polls, although marco rubio is picking up some steam. the latest poll in new hampshire, for example, shows the senator cracking the top three in that early primary state. on the democratic side meanwhile, hillary clinton is down by 16 points to bernie sanders in the granite state and even removing joe biden from the running doesn't help her much, matt. she still trails sanders by double digits. >> thanks very much.

a quick programming note. this sunday on "meet the press" chuck todd will be talking to both hillary clinton and carly fiorina. in other news now. the ntsb is taking over the investigation of a deadly crash in seattle. at least four people were killed, dozens more injured when an amphibious tour vehicle collided with a heart bus. nbc's morgan ratford has more on this this morning. morgan, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. two different two groups from different parts of the world traveling on the same bridge collided going in opposite directions. it resulted in a fatal collision. chaos on a scenic seattle bridge. buses, trucks and victims strewn across every lane. dozens of survivors rushed to nearby hospitals. it all starteded when a popular amphibious tour boat known as ride the ducks lost control on the bridge. witnesses say the tour boat swerved across five lines into oncoming traffic and t-boned a

charter bus filled with international skunts and faculty from a local college and with no seat belts people on the tour boat flew out of the duck both. >> it was like i was bouncing off things and feeling the pain shooting everywhere and then my face slamming against the seat in the front of me. >> reporter: motorists rushed to pull survivors from the wreckage as first responders arrived on scene to treat the wounded. >> we looked at approximately 50 patients that we evaluated. >> reporter: one witness says the tour boat narrowly missed several other on coming scars before striking the charter bus. >> the chance of them hitting a bus full of people with no seat belts, that is the worse. other vehicles have air bags, but they were helpless >> reporter: duck tour company says they will cooperate fully with the ntsb. however, they have decided to suspend tours here in the seattle area out of respect for the victims. those four victims who died were international students just awaiting to start classes right here in north seattle community college. savannah? >> all right, morgan ratford,

thank you very much. >> let's turn to natalie now here with an alarming terror alert. >> the u.s. embassy in malaysia is warning of a potential terrorist acalk at a popular tourist spot in kuala lumpur. the embassy says it has credible threat information and is urging u.s. citizens to avoid the area located in the city center. in the past two years police have reportedly arrested hundreds of malaysians for their alleged ties to isis. muslim pilgrims carried out the ridual stoning of the devil as part of the annual hajj pilgrimage near the holy city of mecca a day after that stampede there killed more than 700 people and injured 800 others. thursday's disaster was the deadliest such incident to strike the annual hajj pilgrimage in more than two decades. saudi arabia's king solman has ordered a safety review of the event. today president obama and chinese president economy jinping will wade into sticky

issues such as cyber spying in the u.s. and the territorial disputes in the pacific and they will also release a joint statement on climate change, fleshing out how they will achieve targets for cutting carbon emissions and tonight the president will host xi for a black tie state dinner. the pope sightings here in new york are getting a lot of buzz. before pope francis even touched down at jfk take a look this was turning a lot of heads in timessquare. looks like the real deal, right? it's actually a wax version. holy father cruising around in that convertible jeep and now part of a new display at madam tussaud's. the new york police department gave them a green light agreeing it's all in fun and not all of us got to be up close and personal. >> matt said let's take a selfie with the pope. >> maybe this isn't a time. >> the wax version of the pope went on to have wax version of you also at maddium tussaud's.

>> we are wax beans, thank you very much. a tornado touched down, not a big one but did a tornado touch down in johns island, south carolina. just a little southwest of charleston, and can you see about ten homes damage the. a lot of freeze down, big power lines down, and also for a while folks were trapped in homes and have since gotten out. thankfully from injuries being reported and here's what's going on. this is what's causing it, this low pressure area. it's bringing in a lot of rain and the pressure gradient between this high up over new england and this low here off the coast, in between the winds are fierce. we're talking winds that could be up to 40 miles per hour causing dangerous rip currents, coastal flooding, beach erosion expected. look at surf. up to 6 to 9 feet in the outer banks and water levels two to three feet above normal and wind gusts to 45 miles per hour and the rainfall. probably going to be flooding next 72 hours. five to seven inches of rain in

showing off his own guns on horseback and in workouts, vladimir putin is orchestrating a different kind of pr blitz asking to meet with barack obama when they are both at the u.n. next week. the two leaders have had their own cold war starting when russia gave temporary asylum to edward snowden charged with stealing nsa secrets. obama promptly cancelled a scheduled meeting with putin. then, russia backed the militias who grabbed territory in ukraine. obama slapped sanctions on russia and on some putin's close cronies. and now syria. putin caught the white house off guard last week sending more weapons in to prop up his ally president assad, but now putin is praising the u.s. in an interview for "60 minutes" to air sunday >> translator: america has attained such amazing results in developing their country. >> reporter: and putin has even reached out to elton john after the singer and gay rights

activist had fallen for a prank caller pretending to be putin. the singer has talked about meeting putin since russian thugs beat up gay rights protesters before the sochi olympics last year. >> if i meet him and say, come, let's have a cup of tea, let's talk about this, he may laugh behind my back and when he shuts the door and calls me an absolute idiot but at least i can have a conscience and say i tried. >> reporter: now elton john may get a chance. the real putin did call suggesting they me. so what is putin up to? >> i remain skeptical about putin's long-term objectives and whether they coincide with america's objectives in ukraine or syria, but in the short term his public relations have been brilliant. >> reporter: some things do remain lost in translation. putin's spokesman says that this meeting is all about syria. the white house says it's all about ukraine, a subject the kremlin says just won't be enough time to talk about. matt? >> andrea mitchell at the u.n. this morning, andrea, thank you

7:40 now on a friday morning. we're back with more of the pope's whirlwind tour of the u.s. >> hundreds of thousands have lined the streets here in new york and washington. so far just hoping to get a glimpse, but what has the first trip to america been like for the holy father? maria has a look at that. >> always smiling. >> yeah. >> and also pretty private as most popes are and he wants the trip to be about the people, focusing on those who need the help the most, but what have we managed to learn, some interesting things about what this trip has been like for him personally. pope francis' visit to the united states is unique in many ways. >> translator: and i ask you all, please, to pray for me. >> reporter: he doesn't stay in a hotel. he doesn't go out to dinner. he follows vatican customs.

>> the pope wherever he goes stays in the vatican's kind of diplomatic residences where they exist. >> reporter: in new york his residence is on manhattan's upper east side, a multi-million dollar townhouse donated to the catholic church years ago which became its diplomatic mission. when pope benedict was in new york in 2008, he went out to dinner. not this pope. he'll eat every meal at vatican residence and though the details of his menu have not been displeased the papal nuncio in new york revealed the recommendations. >> the archbishop said that his doctors only wants him to eat fish and white rice and maybe a chicken breast. >> reporter: he did have one particular request. >> asked for nothing but still water and bananas in his room. >> reporter: and trip organizers say there were plenty of offers to make the pope's stay more enjoyable. >> the phone was ringing off the hook for people at the archdiocese who wanted to do something for the pope. one man called me and said i would hike to order a mattress for the pope and send it to hi. i said, well, i'm sorry.

he doesn't need a mattress but thank you. >> reporter: it was a legitimate concern. his schedule has been challenging. pope francis is 78 years old on a transatlantic trip and his days have been long. sources say he gets up each morning by 6:00 a.m. to pray in the residence chapels, just like he does in rome. and then he's out greeting the faithful on the streets gathered to see him. he starts each day greeting children and ends each day the same way. some of the greatest challenges on this trip have been managing the requests to meet the pope. >> for every one person who got a ticket to the event, there were ten people behind them we had to turn away. >> your holiness, welcome. >> reporter: and it was a meeting with speaker john bain their said so much about the pope, the speaker admittedly nervous explained his tie choice for the day. pope responded is green is the color of hope. as a world leader shaking hands with dignitaries is part of the job. but for this pope it's the

good morningment i'm vai sikahema. we're a few minutes before 8:00 a.m. pope francis arrives in philadelphia tomorrow. security preparations are well under way. sky force 10 got a shot of these workers putting up concrete barricades along the city streets about an hour ago. let's get a check on traffic from jessica boyington. she has a look at what you may expect. >> that's the perfect intro. we do have what is called a traffic box. we have this color coordinated map here for you. all of these areas in the red, there's one behind me here, that's a fenced in area with tickets required to enter. there is a purple area in the center of this city with no tickets and no access allowed in there. with the yellow no cars allowed to be in this vicinity.

arrives in new york city on thursday to a hero's welcome, if you will, and at famous world known st. patrick's cathedral. he had a rock star welcome where he held prayers and vespers for thousands or several hundred clergy members, and he blessed people there and asked for their blessings as well. when he finish there had, it was a very tired pope who came here to the papal nuncio and spent a quiet night because this area is blocked off to make certain that he could rest peacefully. willie, back to you. >> all right, thank you so much. extraordinary security measures and i think everybody is glad for that. what a day, general assembly, school in east harlem, a parade through tral park and then end with a mass at world's most famous arena, madison square garden. >> and then on to philadelphia. >> right. >> a huge event. >> he's a 78-year-old man and has such energy. he's brought such energy to the city as well, and i think everybody, you know, who has had

because you haven't lived until you've had a 5-year-old try to lead you through a corn maze and that 5-year-old insists on being the leader in the corn maze and you have to say, buddy, we just went down there ten seconds ago, it was a dead end and takes a longer time to get out and still a lot of fun. one time we hop on the hay ride with the kids because who doesn't love the hay ride, sitting on the bale of hay and another family sits down right across from us. i look up and it's dee snyder, the lead sister of twisted sister with his family, just being a dad out with his cards kids, so i went on a long hay ride with dee snider, not many people can say that. we did not sing "we're not going to take it" but i was singing it in my happened listened to it on the whole ride home. the fall food is best when it's messiest so my wife and i will grab an ear of corn and roll it around in the bird and salt and walking around eating it that way and the kids, of course, have to have the caramel apples,

republican leadership needs to fight harder, fight the democrats with more legislative and procedural maneuvers to force the president to have to deal with these bills. mitch mcconnell and speaker boehner have not wanted to do this, they believe democrats have the vote to prevent it and they thought it was inevitably going to lead to a shutdown. boehner was in this box. if he didn't fight there was going to be an inn sur recs where they were going to vacate the chair in the house of representatives any member of congress can bring to the floor a motion to vacate the speaker's chair. that was going to happen and he was going to need democrats essentially to save his speakership. i think he believed politically that put him in basically an untenable position so he chose to diffuse this now, leave on a high note. i tell you for -- he basically put his party before himself. it is an interesting decision and like i said t will delay this fight. there will be a big leadership

fight still. >> right. >> probably now -- and there may be a government shutdown fight in three months, but this will delay all that for at least three months. >> obviously if this doesn't happen until the end of october, then it creates a vacuum or void. you talk about a leadership fight. who are we looking at? who might assume that position? snieng you are going to hear three names quickly, one is the current number two in the house, kevin mccarthy, he is a california republican, he is the one that replaced eric cantor after eric cantor the former number two lost in his own republican primary. you are going to hear a lot of chatter about paul ryan. in the past he had said no. the former vice president shall running mate to mitt romney, he could be the guy who could sale the party but he is not a big fan of the politics that goes with the job and then the conservative, the guy that may be the biggest conservative who has a shot at winning the speakership is a2c" texas

hensarling, he is somebody who has more trust with key partiers than the so-called establishment. you're going to see a split among+6gz republicans in the ho among+6gz re looks like a presi race, the establishment versus the outsiders n this case the outsiders are the conservative tea party members. they believe that boehner and cantor were never with them. mccarthy they like but don't know how much they trust him. it will be a fight between mccarty as the establishment guy and jab jeff hensarling. >> is there some event, some achievement that speaker boehner will be remembered for? >> look, i think it's -- i think it's going to be a mixed bag. i think his legacy has been his struggle to tame this party. he has tried to bridge the9tó divide between the establishment and the conservative base and frankly by having to resign i think it's a concession that he did the best he could for four

good morning, everyone. pope francis is about to speak at the united nations, he is expected to address the general assembly, one of five scheduled stops he is making here in new york city today, a very, very busy day for the pontiff. in a few moments he will address 170 world leaders at the united nations general assembly. we have nbc's peter alexander outside the u.n. as we await the pope's speech. good morning. what are we expecting? >> reporter: good morning. there really is no bigger stage notice world, no bigger international site than this, the united nations for pope

francis' remarks moments from now. recognize when he was speaking yesterday before congress he really was speaking to the american people, the audience is so much bigger today for the spiritual leader to 1.2 catholics worldwide. as we witnessed yesterday when he spoke before congress this is knots a pope that lectures and skolds, it is one who tries to bring us together for a common good and that's likely a theme we will witness today as he hits on some of those critical issues including immigration, north carolina inequality. yesterday when he went to visit having lunch not with members of congress but with the homeless in the d.c. community he made that message very clear as well, but recognizes as dysfunctional as our congress s the united nation ss perhaps even worse. i spoke to the u.s. ambassador to the united nations today and she said she has been so moved by the inspirational words by this pope for her the real issue and desire is to see the activation, the implementation

of these goals. united nations humanitarian chief said that in eastern ukraine that is correct crisis in ukraine with russia right now that in that region separatists had forced the united nations teams to leave. that means that the aid, 1,600 tons i believe it was, 16,000 perhaps -- excuse me, 16,000 tons of relief and aid supplies have not been provided to the people there who need t that is one of the fail urs of the united nations, their inability to help in that crisis. it's one of the challenges we will likely hear from this pope as he tries to bring the world together for a common good. >> he has a very busy schedule. he has this address before the united nations general assembly, later he will going gr to hallowed ground, ground zero, visit the 9/11 memorial and museum where he will lead an interfaith service. he also plans to meet with school children today, he has a
