the anticipation, even bigger. tonight we have team conch as hundreds of thousands, perhaps more than a million people are expected to descend on philadelphia for the papal visit. good evening, i'm jacqueline london. >> and i'm james rosenfield. pope francis touches down in less than ten hours. and in center city we found metal detecters in place and the national guard on patrol. >> lauren begins our team coverage. >> reporter: we're at the edge of the traffic box on south street. this is outside right here where you can actually drive down the street and this where you can't get through, this is inside the traffic box. there is a lot more security past this point. on street corners national guard troops keep watch as the city transforms. >> you can see this is a very complicated operation logistically. a lot of moving parts and a lot

of different agencies involved. >> we caught up with chief inspector joe sullivan of the philadelphia police. >> this is certainly a combined operation, a lot of different agencies all bringing special talents, abilities and equipment. >> reporter: we saw homeland security among them. and we took a drive to see how the blocked streets were changing how you get around. >> okay. we can't get through here at all. closures increased throughout the day and evening. some catching drives by surprise. >> we were supposed to be down over here. >> this man parked in this garage this morning and returned to find concrete barriers blocking the exit. >> every exit was closed, you know. >> reporter: you couldn't get out? >> no, we couldn't. >> he ended up stuck anyway, eventually steering out through a back exit. >> reporter: what do you say to folks who run into things like that? >> for one, we're sorry.

song she wants to keep a surprise. she is also going to present the pope with a huge box of sermons given by her father. but of course the main event will be the holy father. >> they call him the people's pope. and nbc randy gillen haul reports, the people are counting down to his arrival. >> reporter: now that the city is officially locked down, you can feel it in the air. the excitement is growing. the pope will be here in less than ten hours. the pilgrims are heading to their hotels to get a good night's rest. we stopped in the evangelist catholic church. on the eve of the pope's arrival amid heavy security and huge crowds, devout catholics took a moment to stop and pray for the pope's safety and for this momentous opportunity ahead. >> he didn't come to denver, he don't go to los angeles, he came to philadelphia and that's really special. >> reporter: center city is packed with pilgrims arriving

from countries and cities near and far. >> i can't believe it's here. it's great. >> reporter: the moment is hours away. but seeing the pope in person could be tough. the fact is most people aren't going to get anywhere close to seeing the pope during his speech or the mass. that's why they're banking on the parkway. the pope is going to have a parade going from city hall all the way to the art museum. and people are telling us they're going to get out here on the sidewalks lining up early tomorrow morning. >> anna torres saw the pope at the white house two days ago but she came here to philly anyways. you haven't had enough, you need another round? >> that's true. >> and this familiarfully from costa rica is hoping the pontiff will kiss the head of their 4-month-old son. >> he's going to be the future pope from costa rica. >> reporter: the plan is to wake up extremely early, stake out one of the good spots on the parkway and wait all day for the

pope to arrive. if you're coming into town, best bet is to leave as early and possible. nbc 10 news. one of the big questions on everyone's minds, will. weather be a blessing for the crowds. >> glen hurricane schwartz have your papal forecast. >> the weather is going to be koob rating. it's on the comfortable side and it looks like it's going to stay dry. we have a little bit of wind coming in off of the ocean. a lot of clouds aroud7i high clouds. the rain staying to the south because a lot of dry air underneath those high clouds preventing the rain from coming up this way. it does look like it's going stay well south of the area during the day tomorrow. we start off at 64 degrees. we'll have the sunday forecast and see when we're going to get the much needed rain in the

seven day in a few minutes. make sure you the app to get ready for the pope's visit, plus a list of what you can and cannot take with you on the parkway. god is living in our cities. those words from pope francis tonight as we celebrated mass in madison square garden. >> 18,000 people came to hear him. he praised urban life but warned about abandoning the homeless. david ushery reports from new york. >> granted it wu aas always goi to be a friendly audience but tonight the garden rocked. they came, they saw and they cried when they witnessed this, the pope stopping his golf cart touching a sick little girl make her father weep. moments, moments that people inside the garden won't soon forget. >> the audience just couldn't stop cheering. every time we stopped, there was screaming again. >> i couldn't contain myself.

it was just amazing. >> touching, moving, emotional, beautiful. >> he just is a true man of kindness and hope. >> for his last big moment in new york, francis did what church observers says he like to do for two people or two million. he said mass. in his homily or sermon, a message for the world and new yorkers, in big cities life can be tough and the homeless, the elderly, the sick can fall through the cracks. don't forget them. >> it's going to affect a lot of people in new york to do better, no matter, you know, what race, color, creed, religion you are, he's very empowering and i think he tries to encompass all people. >> at the end of mass, a strong thank you from cardinal dolan on behalf of all new yorkers. >> it is clear how much we welcome you, how much we love you, how much we need you, how much we thank you for your visit. >> and francis ended his moment on the new york stage with the

[ cheers & applause ] >> don't forget to pray for me. that was nbc's david ushery reporting. pope francis began his day by addressing the u.n. in new york. >> he praised members for their efforts to serve man kind. the pope said urgent action is needed. he warned that the ambitions of wealth and power can cause mismanaged economies. >> he paused here at the reflecting pool to say a prayer and lay a white rose. and then he met briefly with family members of some of the fallen first responders. >> the pope's day in new york also included a stop in a catholic school in harlem. the pope greeted everyone outside the school, then he

headed inside where the students sang to him and francis loved every minute of it. ♪ he says louder, louder. today's visit comes as catholic schools struggle to compete for students across the country. the school has been part of the harlem community since 1882. >> here's a question for you. if it meant you could see the pope, would you sleep in a cemetery? not unusual camping ground during the papal visit. plus the dally lama cancels on philadelphia. why he won't be coming to town after all. a surprise announcement from the speaker of the house. why john boehner says it's time for him to step down. and i'll have the forecast for the pope's mass on the parkway, a warmup plus some much needed rain.

director lee daniels. the first lady wore a gown by vera wang. and philadelphia prepares to welcome the pope, there is word tonight that another spiritual leader will not be coming to philadelphia. dalai lama canceling his trip to the u.s. saying his doctors are advising him to rest. he was scheduled to be here next month. lawmakers are already jumping for position following house speaker john boehner's resignation. boehner says he woke up this morning and decided to announce he's stepping down from congress. he's resigning at the end of october. boehner says he actually planned on leaving at the end of the year but explain why he changed his mind. >> it's become clear to me that this prolonged leadership turmoil would do irreparable harm to the institution. >> today's announcement comes a day after boehner met with pope

francis at the house speaker's office in washington. a big surprise for a group from kentucky who arrived in philadelphia tonight ahead of the pope's visit. >> 50 parishioners from a catholic church in bowling green are here after securing a donated bus and a synagogue offered them a place to stay. they thought they would watch the events on a jumbotron. but tonight they learned that they each have a ticket to attend sunday's papal mass >> many in the group haven't done anything like that, haven't been to the east coast, much less come to a sin gol. >> the world meeting of families donated the tickets. some papal pilgrims from new jersey have some unique sleeping quarters. they're spending the night in the cemetery. there's not enough room for everyone in the church, so the cemetery outside is home for the rest of them this weekend. they realize it's not the most

conventional place to camp. >> this place might not be the best place to camp. we know we're sharing this earth with those who preceded us. >> the visitors of the church are from the arch diocese of newark. >> if you have to be out there, quite a night to be sleeping under the stars. they won't have to deal with any rain at least, will they, glen? >> the pope has had some really great weather, washington, new york and now philadelphia. the weather pattern is just ideal here. weave had some cooler winds that have come in making it nice and comfortable over the weekend. we do have the threat of coastal flooding. that is going to be the warm weather issue in any part of our area this weekend. and that papal weekend forecast is again looking dry and comfortable. 65 degrees, we have high clouds out there right now, the wind is diminished somewhat from this afternoon. but it will pick up again during the afternoon tomorrow. 59 degrees in pottstown, 60 in

mt. holly. certainly cooler than it has been right now. and by tomorrow morning it will be a little cooler than it has been over the last several mornings. remember we've gotten into the 80s many days. we only got to 78 today, 75 tomorrow. the coastal flood advisory goes through sunday at noon. the high tide saturday night into sunday morning could produce some minor coastal flooding across much of the area, from the jersey shore, delaware beaches, delaware bay and then that persistent east wind just keeps going higher and higher with each tide. a lot of clouds around but they're just high clouds. the thicker clouds with the rain stay down to the south. because there's a big area of high pressure over new england keeping the dry air in, fighting off the moisture and the winner is the dry air. because look at that. it's just like a wall that that rain just can't be making much

progress to the north. and our latest computer models show that rain staying to the south as we've been suggesting for a week now. and even some intervals of sunshine there. as we go to saturday and even sunday afternoon. monday, we may be seeing some showers. but that's monday. not over the weekend. so both days should be fairly similar, maybe a little more sunshine saturday afternoon than sunday afternoon. but the important thing is that the rain stays to the south. it's also going to say south of where the eagles are playing on sunday against the jets. real nice weather there with the temperature up to 71 degrees. dry weather in north jersey too. 62 for the low in philadelphia tonight, 52 north and west. during the day tomorrow it's going to be breezy, mix of sun and clouds, temperatures into the mid 70s. nice and comfortable. the average temperature for this time of the year. same story for sunday. we get a little warmer early

next week with a chance of showers on monday. and then later in the week much more significant threat of rain. and that's the kind of rain that we need. it's been dry 13 days in a row here and actually that's the remnants of the system that's to the south right now. and it may take five, six days for it to get up this way. >> oh boy. >> got lucky on the timing of that one. not for this weekend. >> amazing timing. if this was in north carolina at the coast, it would be a total washout. and that's not that far away from here. >> no, it's not. jets, eagles, coming up this weekend. >> will demarco murray play? >> it is the question everyone wants to know. we'll answer that, will he play or won't he. wait until you see what happened in tonight's philly's game against the nationals. a big game for this gentleman. highlights on the way.
