today", back open. traffic is now able to travel over the ben franklin bridge and onto the highways through philadelphia that had been closed for the pope's visit. after the history making weekend, comes the cleanup. crews have been working to get the parkway and center city ready for the monday commute. on this monday, the first alert weather team is tracking showers and fog out there as you can see from this view of the center city skyline. not everybody will see the rain today, and before the showers move in, we are in for a warm start to the week. we'll have details coming up. good morning. this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm rosemary connors.
4:01 am
there are lots of traffic changes happening overnight now that the pope has left. i should mention we got word that he did land in rome so that's the good news. back to our traffic situation, some roads reopened, others are still closed in center city. first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington has the most up to date information. >> rosemary, mainly the main road closures are still the ben franklin parkway, kelly drive, the areas around the festivities this weekend. the big things we have to talk about, some opened early so good news. schuylkill expressway back open, city avenue is open, as of last night, 95 all of those exits open so access from new jersey in, all of the roads in new jersey up to the bridge are open as well. the vine street expressway is open. but, the exit ramp from center city don't provide access to the vine street expressway. only access it now from the schuylkill expressway or 95. as for the traffic box, very unclear when this is going to
4:02 am
start being picked up. this is gradual cleanup situation. but at 3:00 a.m. the city had provided taxi stands inside the box so that's good news. some improvement there. taxis in the box traveling people around. for parking restrictions they remain until areas are cleared at some point today. so still watch out for signs. you do see signs there, don't park in the area, you don't want to get your car towed. for the new jersey construction projects, the new jersey department of transportation is halting all lane restrictions for construction projects until tonight at about 9:00 p.m. construction projects will be working and active outside of the concrete barriers. >> thank you. let's check in with meteorologist brittney shipp. she has the first alert forecast. a little foggy. >> patchy fog for philadelphia. i'll show you that, but a live look outside for our temperatures at 66 degrees in philadelphia, humidity at 87%. wind out of the east-northeast
4:03 am
at about 8 miles per hour. we'll be warmer today so temperatures will head close to 80 degrees. our current conditions at 63 degrees in pottstown, 62 wilmington, 63 in millville. 62 in atlantic city and temperatures in the northeast philly at 66. a little dense fog depending where you are, mount holly, visibility down to less than a mile. down to 3 miles in millville, 9 miles in philadelphia so patchy fog in those locations and down to 7 miles in atlantic city. your eight-hour city planner shows that by 6:00, 64, 9:00, 68 and temperatures by noon in the high 70s. today's high between 78 and 81. >> thank you, brittney. happening now the cleanup is under way. our cameras on sky force 10 captured this video of crews clearing trash along the ben franklin parkway. the crews have been working around the clock cleaning the area so the vital thoroughfares through center city will be ready for commuters.
4:04 am
matt delucia is live along the parkway to show us the progress. >> reporter: a lot of work is going on here right now throughout the night. you may be able to hear some of it behind me, hear some of the fences coming down. that's happening throughout the night. a lot of work. i'm going to step out of the way. a couple of vehicles moving, a lot of them are just workers out here trying to get this taken care of. a lot of golf carts coming through as well. i want to show you before we go to the video, look at all of this water. wawa put this out here. 2.5 million bottles. look at this. stacks of water still out here. there was police officer earlier who told one of the workers take a case. seems as though this was an over estimate of how much water people would be using out here. but clearly, a lot of preparation went into this event. let's look at some video from sky force 10. you can see the cleanup under
4:05 am
way. a lot of workers out here working throughout the night, cleaning up all of the trash out there on the streets and of course this is a big undertaking. not only for the preparations but also for the cleanup effort. and we are starting to see more and more nor malty if you will in terms of center city. this was a different scene 24 hours ago, security check points. let's come back out live again. you can see this is one of the major areas, looking down the parkway, everything was blocked off. about an hour ago this entire area was fenced off. now most of the fences are down on the ground now. several of the people i've been talking with here tell me that they are hoping to get this area reopened by noon, some of the major roads. but a lot of the work taking down that stage is going to continue well through the week. a lot of work to be done. we're going to be moving around throughout the morning show and showing you different scenes from the parkway and around the
4:06 am
area. for now live in center city, matt delucia, "nbc 10 news." >> in case you haven't picked it up yet, here is the front page of "the philadelphia inquirer" reading "an epic show of faith." it shows pope francis with the people before yesterday's historic mass on the parkway. memories to last a lifetime and beyond, that's what many took away from the papal mass yesterday. it was the final public event for pope francis in philadelphia and in the u.s. he took the altar with over 800,000. the excitement and energy was palpable. >> his word is very inspiring to me. >> i've seen people from other religions, so culturally diverse. >> to be at a mass led by the holy father is just amazing. >> others we spoke to told us
4:07 am
that the papal mass felt intimate though it drew so many. all of those people meant long lines at the security check points. the key was keeping busy. for some the wait lasted for hours. estimates put the crowds around 860,000. that meant pilgrims eager to see the pope had to tap into that christian virtue of patience. >> the line was like three hours to get in. we waited three hours here. >> we walked up to the white. today we were down spring garden. >> some families stuck in the back of the lines gave up and left early but those who made it through got a blessings from the pope, received communion and prayed together. pope francis offered a final wave good-bye aboard shepherd one at philadelphia international airport last night. the pontiff's farewell to the city he called home for the last two days. he offered gratitude before
4:08 am
departing. >> a heartful of gratitude and hope. i'm grateful for all of you and to the many others who worked so hard to make my visit possible. >> before leaving the pope said good-bye to several hundred selected guests including volunteers with the world meeting of families inside an harpt hangor. the pope asked them to pray for him. you can relive yesterday's mass and the entire papal weekend on nbc10.com and on the nbc 10 app and on a final note, we are happy to report that the pope has landed in rome, it was an eight-hour 11-minute trip. he did get there safely. we are staying on top of breaking news from overnight.
4:09 am
a man was shot during a home invasion in montgomery county. this happened before midnight. the victim went to the hospital. this was the scene after the home invasion and shooting. police are still searching for a suspect. what investigators know about the suspect he was wearing a mask at the time. we are working to get an update on the victim's condition. good morning. temperatures today expected to be a little warmer than what we saw yesterday. yesterday we stayed in the low 70s with lots of clouds. and this morning we're waking up to patchy fog throughout the philadelphia area. as you take a closer look the fog is a bit worse if you are closer to atlantic city and millville, visibility reduced to about 3 miles. less than a mile in mount holly and 9 miles in philadelphia. so patchy fog in philly.
4:10 am
other places, our current temperature at 59 in the poconos and a closer look at the satellite/radar shot shows cloudy but dry conditions. we'll see our clouds increasing into the rest of today. and the other thing we're tracking is maybe a few scattered showers as we head into the afternoon. but we have a better chance pushing into tuesday, tuesday night and wednesday to see more rain moving in. here's your futurecast today. a few isolated showers, will try to pop up near philadelphia, parts of wilmington, the poconos. clouds will continue to increase but tomorrow we have a better chance to see rainfall. today just a chance of stray showers. temperatures on the warmer side between 78 and 81. closer to summertime averages and warmer conditions expected. here are the headlines. warmer today, a rainy week, then a cooldown. i'll go over all of the details coming up.
4:11 am
brittney shipp is keeping an eye on the radar, jessica boyington is keeping an eye on the traffic cameras out there and of course she has more information about the updates of some of the roads that reopened, some still closed. >> so updates are coming in but the good news is a lot of them came earlier than expected. mass transit, patco is on a saturday schedule. the trolley trains and buses on normal service with enhanced service at kenwood and newark lines. philadelphia and all of the majors there, we've been dealing with a lot of majors closed this weekend affecting a lot of people. now, you can get back to work on the schuylkill expressway is open, city avenue is back open, the exits off 95 are open. access to the ben franklin bridge is okay, all the jersey roads up there open, and you can now drive over top of the ben franklin bridge getting into philadelphia. for the vine street expressway, it's actually open to traffic, i was looking at some of my cameras, cars are moving through
4:12 am
but the exit ramps from center city don't provide access. for the traffic box, slowly being picked up right now so no real word whether or not it's completely open to traffic. but by 3:00 this morning the city provided taxi stands inside so that's at least was hopeful thinking there. we're starting to see improvement inside the box. parking restrictions, remember, will remain until the areas are cleared at some point today. so if you do still see signs and parking restrictions do not park there. you will get towed. >> thank you. while the papal mass appears to be a success, there was some jeering before the crowd was cheering. next, the reason why some pilgrims were upset about what they were and were not seeing. put one in the win columns. the eagles notch a victory. hear from the coach and players.
4:13 am
4:14 am
4:15 am
the papal mass was filled with peace, there were some tense moments ahead of the pope's arrival on the parkway. as you can hear there was booing and chanting near the stage as a big tent went up blocking the view of hundreds of spectators, chanting move that tent. the tent prevented them from getting a good look at the holy father. crews immediately sprang into action to prevent it from escalating and the tent came down before the mass providing a clear line of sight to pope francis. also yesterday at his request,

pope francis met behind closed doors in the morning with victims of priest sex abuse. the pontiff assured the victims and bishops that those who played any role in the abuse of children would be held accountable. survivors network of those abused by priests or snap said until secret files of priest abuse are released and turned over to police or civil courts the message won't invoke real change. >> he needs to have people going into each parish and giving names and saying this one, you know, this priest is a pedophile, protect your children. they are human. priests are human and of course it should be addressed. it should never be allowed. and he's going to handle that. >> people want to hear that they are not ignoring it. i love that. he's real. >> the pope called survivors

ministers of mercy. even though the papal visit is history you can still be part of the story. send us your photos and videos and connect with us through the nbc 10 app, use the #popeinphilly. >> today president obama plans to meet with vladamir putin at the u.n., you are looking at president obama speaking yesterday. his meeting with putin will be their first in nearly a year. yesterday president obama called on world leaders to do more to help the poor and vulnerable. he said that kind of action may have prevented some current global problems. >> i profoundly believe that many of the conflicts, the refugee crises, the military interventions over the years might have been avoided if nations had invested in the lives of their people and the wealthiest nations on earth were
4:18 am
better partners in working with those that are trying to lift themselves up. >> president obama and putin are expected to discuss ukraine, isis and the syrian refugee crisis at their meeting later today. eagles fans, you can breathe a collective sigh of relief. the birds are in the win column after a victory on the road against the new york jets. demarco murray did not play but darren sproles had a rushing touchdown on this 89 yard punt return. later, sam bradford found ryan matthews down the sideline for a touchdown. the birds jump out to a 24-0 lead. they held on to win, 24-17. 0 >> thought it was gritty. we knew going in this was going to be one of those kind of use a boxing analogy, start swinging and that's what happened.
4:19 am
>> that was a really good football team, come on the road to get a win, tough win, our defense did a great job keeping us in the game. this was a great win for the team. >> the eagles have never lost to the jets. the birds take a 1-2 record into next sunday's game at washington. things seem to be patched up between two teammates who got into a brawl during the phillies game yesterday. take a look at former phil going at it in the dugout. the fight broke out after it appears that harper failed to run out a fly ball. after the game papelbon considers him a brother and brothers sometimes fight. >> i talked and told him how we feel. we're on the same page. >> got a lot to play for so just worried about that. >> the fight did not distract the phillies. they beat washington 12-5.
4:20 am
good morning. taking a live look outside now. the skyline you can see patchy fog, fog is a little worse closer to the south jersey so that's something we're going to be watching. closer look, into the rest of today, warmer today, a rainy week on tap, so unsettled weather on its way after staying dry the past couple days. and we're going to cool things down, temperatures drop below average into the 60s. a live look outside right now we're at 66 degrees, mostly cloudy skies. humidity is at 87%, winds out of the east-northeast at 8 miles per hour. 59 degrees in the poconos, 64 in allentown, 63 in pottstown, 62 in westchester. 60s in glassboro, same in atlantic city and temperatures in dover at 63. a closer look at our satellite/radar shows we're going to track stray showers from the west.
4:21 am
we'll continue to see unsettled weather as we go into today and definitely into tomorrow. we have a better chance of rain heading into tomorrow. so a few clouds now and then we'll see clouds increasing as we head into the afternoon. so closer look at futurecast shows cloudy conditions will continue. and then even see a few stray showers moving through and then tuesday by 6:00 a.m. that's when our better chance of showers moves into the lehigh valley, dover, north of atlantic city and even better chance into tuesday afternoon. looks like the heaviest rain is going to be right over new york. then as we progress you notice into the overnight hours, that's when we're going to start to see some heavy rain moving into our region. so highs around the area today will push into the 80s, the low 80s. and our rains will be 78 to 81 with a chance of a stray shower. yesterday we stayed in the low 70s, seven-day forecast shows we have two days where temperatures are in the 80s, then we cool things down a little bit. we head into the 60s by friday.
4:22 am
>> 4:21 on monday, jessica boyington is keeping an eye on the traffic and letting us know what's open, what is still closed as we move into monday from the papal weekend. jessica. >> good news, pretty much across the board right now. a lot of highways opened early. so the schuylkill open, city avenue opened, the exits off 95 that were blocked off all weekend are now open. and we have full access now to the ben franklin bridge, that wasn't supposed to happen until about 12 noon. so the roads leading up to the ben franklin bridge in new jersey are also open. the vine street expressway is open but the ramp from center city do not provide access to it. so the only way you can get on the vine street expressway, you see cars going east or westbound but you can see the exit ramps are blocked with police activity in there. the only way you can access is from 95 or the schuylkill expressway. these are probably one of the last closures lifted. kelly drive closed. the ben franklin parkway closed
