from pope francis' visit? we are choosing some of his most memorable moments to share with you. first, big changes in our weather, from warmer temperatures to a lot of rain. nbc 10 news at 5:00 starts right now. our good weather vanished when pope francis departed. >> today it's kind of warm, muggy out there and now we're tracking rain that could lead to a really wet week. sh sheena parveen, big changes. >> quite a lot of changes in the forecast for this coming week. right now, though, we are still mostly dry through the area, warm and humid, but also still cloudy. center city seeing those overcast skies and we have clouds through most of the area, maybe a few sprinkles through the poconos and later tonight we could still have a couple showers late tonight, then fog developing, but more rain starts to move in tomorrow. if you look to the south, we have a pretty unsettled atmosphere here, so all this weather is really going to fly to the eastern seaboard and we're going to have our increasing rain chances,

here are some of the stories making headlines on nbc 10 news at 5:00. >> the closing bell ends a day of tumbling stock on wall street. amid ongoing concerns about the forecast for global growth, the s&p 500 fell 47 points today. the dow jones slipped 292 points, and the nasdaq lost 137. today's stock slide keeps the market on track for its worst quarterly performance in the last four years. police in montgomery county are looking for the intruder who shot and killed a father during a home invasion. investigators say 53-year-old kevin brown was shot as he and his wife tried escape. deanna durante will explain the leads police are following right now coming up at 5:30. tonight the penn state campus is remembering a 19-year-old sophomore killed in a car crash on the pennsylvania

turnpike. the 19-year-old sepot was returning to the philadelphia area when the accident happened yesterday. other students were hurt coming back from a weekend trying to raise money for families of pediatric cancer patients. it's part of a student run philanthropy project at penn. her sorority posted this photo with a message that reads in part, her kindness and compassion is something we'll all treasure and carry with us for the rest of our lives. hundreds of students in allentown school district took matters into their own hands this morning to bring about change. students from four separate schools took part in a walkout. they are calling for the resignation of the superintendent russell mayo for what they are calling a lack of leadership. district officials responded with a statement that reads in part, "although the allentown school district does not support a student walkout, students were not barred from walking out. parents and guardians were informed over the weekend that should their student leave school, they will receive an

unexcused absence." right now at 5:00, troubling picture for pennsylvania students. preliminary data showed a 35% drop in math scores and 9% drop in english. the pennsylvania system of school assessment blames the state's recently overhauled exams for the drop in scores. the tests are administered each spring in grades three through eight. some new jersey voters have 112 million reasons to consider a new tax proposal. elections are scheduled for tomorrow in seven new jersey school districts. they include long port in atlantic county and northern burlington county regional. the money will pay for construction and renovation projects. if approved, the work will be eligible for state government subsidies. bank of america customers might want to check account balances. police are investigating a series of atm thefts. police have released some

surveillance pictures of two suspects they say are involved in skimming as many as 40 bank of america customers have reported unauthorized withdrawals from their accounts. police say the suspects have stolen more than $50,000. here's how the skimming works. crooks plant a device over the card reader on the atm. in most cases it's tough to notice it, but once your card is swiped on the phoney reader, all your account was is at risk. the criminals can make a duplicate bank card and gain full access to your account. as we know, the pope is now gone and the big cleanup is on. all night and all day crews have been working to keep putting away the stages and the jumbotrons, sweeping up the trash, folding up the chairs. takes a lot of people power to return the ben franklin parkway to normal. >> it's still not clear exactly how many attend the the papal mass. early on the city stated we could expect 1.5 million on the parkway. last night we were told the count was about 860,000.

today the mayor told us he does not have an official number yet. he blamed the media for lower turnout on saturday and for any confusion. one business owner we spoke to sees it differently. >> i think the reporting on any number of aspects of detrimental to the mindset of many philadelphians and others. i think in some instances you all scared the [ bleep ] out of people with some of the stories. >> i think our regular customer base was scared away by the city and the p.r. that went with it. >> the mayor later apologized for the language he used to blame the media, and he admitted there were some missteps in the planning. while the city tries to get back to normal now, church leaders want to make sure the pope's message lives on. >> nbc 10's cydney long has more from the world meeting of families.

this is nbc 10 news. >> the woman who helped two killers escape from a new york prison was sentenced today and joyce mitchell did not get the house arrest she was hoping for. mitchell was sentenced two to seven years in prison. mitchell made a tearful apology. she says fear motivated her to smuggle tools to inmates richard matt and david sweat. >> i'm hoping you will have mercy on me here. no words can explain how deeply

sorry i am. >> the judge said he didn't believe mitchell when she failed to report the escape plan because she thought the inmates would kill her husband. they took mitchell to task, overtime costs totalled $23 million. prosecutors want mitchell to pay restitution of nearly $120,000. that would pay to repair the cell walls that matt and sweat cut through to escape. today donald trump revealed a tax reform plan that would cut taxes for tens of millions of americans. >> trump calls it common sense, but his critics want to see the fine print. nbc 10 national correspondent brian mooar has the latest from washington. >> reporter: with trademark bravado, donald trump laid out a sweeping tax reform plan that would lower or eliminate taxes for millions of americans and give breaks to businesses. >> it's a tax reform that i think will make america strong

and great again. >> reporter: individuals making less than $25,000 a and married couples makes less than $50,000, 31 million households in all, wouldn't pay federal taxes. business rates would be lowered to 15%. critics want to know how this plan offsets potentially trillions in lost revenue. >> it reduces or eliminates most of the deductions and loopholes available to special interests and to the very rich. >> there are too many tax breaks benefiting the super rich, but until we know specifically which he's getting rid of, it's hard to believe this tax plan won't add quite a lot to the debt at a time we can hardly afford that. >> this plan is far more ambitious and expensive than proposals released by jeb bush and marco rubio, who's the focus of trump's latest attacks. >> senator rubio's a lightweight, we understand that. >> rubio's among the candidates on the rise in the latest poll,

though trump is still holding his lead. brian mooar, nbc news, washington. >> today we are looking back at some of his most memorable and poignant moments. tim furlong joins us now with more. >> that's right, it was one of the pope's final stops on his visit to the united states. the united states has the largest prison population in the developed world. the pope said in his speech that prison should be a place that encourages rehabilitation and re-entry into society. the pope tried to give the inmates hope and shook about 100 hands, but the first hug really set the tone for the visit. it was kind of a sweet moment. even prisoners should have hope and he told them every one of us, including he himself, has something we need to be cleansed of or purified from. the pope also got a gift from the inmates, the beautiful chair, they made it for him on his visit.

to the middle of the week, the weel weekend, so we are watching the tropics for further development and a system heading in our direction. i'll show you that in just a minute. right now overcast skies in philadelphia. temperature 81 degrees, 12 degrees warmer right now than yesterday at this time, so certainly a warm day, and reall the entire area's under the same air mass. prettyt( uniformed temps throug allentown, low 80s, 78 westchest westchester. 79 in atlantic city, and it's going to stay mild and muggy through tonight. then we'll see the fog developing. locally we don't have too much in the way of rain, maybe sprinkles here and there. otherwise we're looking at mostly cloudy skies. more rain to the south will be moving in late tomorrow, but the tropical system i mentioned is a tropical depression. right now near the bahamas and is expected to be strengthening as it moves north. over the next couple days it's going to move slow, but then

it's going to make more of a northerly track through the weekend, that would be increasing our winds, possibly giving us pretty heavy rainfall into the weekend, but before we actually get to the weekend, we have other areas of rain to worry about. here's a closer look at our local weather before that. now we're looking at tomorrow, 72çs, could see a few showers, early fog. then tomorrow afternoon we could see scattered showers, temperatures still near 80, another warm day tomorrow. watch what happens late tomorrow night, heavy rain moving in, areas north and west of philadelphia so far look like you could see the heaviest, especially through the lehigh valley and talking possibly several inches of rain, localized flooding. this will be overnight into wednesday morning, so for the morning commute wednesday a lot of this rain could be out of the area. then through the afternoon wednesday there's a chance we could see more showers, but we're going to see cooler temperatures, too. another look at future weather, kind of a rainy, windy, cloudy

weather pattern for pretty much the entire week. then as we go closer to the weekend, there's that area of low pressure to our south. this is saturday night. the main concern is going to be a strong onshore wind that could lead to coastal flooding, local flooding, as well as heavy rainfall, so all these things we're going to be watching as we get closer to the weekend. right now, though, watching all the updates coming in. we will be tweaking the forecast as we get closer. we know it can change. we are going to be tracking it over the next several days. tonight, isolated showers, fog moving in late, 67 for the low in philadelphia, 64 degrees areas north and west. tomorrow, another warm humid day like today. showers going to be the heaviest at night, but could have showers during the day. heavy rain, mostly overnight, into early wednesday. temperatures still in the low 80s tomorrow. then into wednesday, we'll have the rain around. will be a cooler day, there you see it, the rain, the wind, the clouds, all moving in into the end of the week, possibly the

this is nbc 10 news. >> transportation tax battles brewing in new jersey this afternoon and governor chris christie is holding his ground. state democrats want to see a hike in the gas tax. christie is urging the state's gop leaders to shoot down that measure until tax concessions are made elsewhere. christie cites the state's crumbling transportation trust fund and a need for tax fairness. of course, this happens as prices at the pump continue to drop. new jersey has the lowest in the region with a gallon of regular averaging $2.00. philadelphia has the highest at $2.32. drivers in delaware are paying $2.18. from gas prices to tuition assistance, a new jersey college is getting a big boost from the federal government. the u.s. department of education is awarding cumberland county college $524,000 as part of a multimillion dollar award to

>> i didn't hear anything. we were all in our house. nobody heard anything. >> reporter: residents say they had no idea what happened down the street until they woke up. >> yeah, i saw the cops, they were looking for bullet casings this morning. they were pounding the door down next door. >> reporter: 53-year-old kevin brown was shot once in the neck just before he tried to escape. >> seems he was trying to get out the window, he and his wife were in that bedroom. and were able to get out. >> relatives say the home invasion happened after 11:00 last night and inside the house, brown, his wife, and grown children. >> i don't know why they would break into his house, of all people. >> does not seem to be a -- you know, situation where you have neighbors that should be concerned about it. it was a targeted attack. >> reporter: police aren't saying what leads them to believe that. most of the morning detectives

them words of compassion, he said he wasn't trying to downplay sexual abuse. in fact, he says any priest who abuses a child commits a sacrilege and even bishops who covered it up, they are guilty. as for his own star power, the pope isn't very impressed. he says that's just fleeting. he says what lasts is being a servant to god. i'm anne thompson in rome, back to you. victory in the wake of pope francis' visit to philadelphia. septa says more than 28,000 people rode the rails on saturday, followed by an additional 34,000 on sunday. despite lower than expected ridership for both days, officials say no major issues were encountered. here's a story to post to your timeline, the numbers are in about how much data was used during the pope's visit. at&t reports enough data was used to equal 36 million social media posts without photos, putting the use at 14 times more

than a normal philadelphia weekend. how big was this event? data used here was 7.5 times more than around the stadium at the super bowl. 7.5 times more. verizon reported similar numbers. we're learning new information about an accident last night involving a teenaged boy and a dangerous decision. a 14-year-old boy and four of his friends secretly made it into the newman paper company in northeast philadelphia last night. they began riding forklifts, but one of the forklifts tipped over and pinned the boy, killing him. it happened around 9:00 last night. they entered the grounds through a hole in the fence and they are still investigating the accident. today students at a new jersey high school are mourning their star quarterback, who suffered an injury on the field. jen maxfield reports. >> reporter: friends of evan murray are gathering to remember and pray at a growing memorial outside the warren hills football field. >> he didn't deserve it at all.

he's the nicest kid. >> reporter: the 17-year-old seemed to have it all, three-sport athlete, starting quarterback, and top student in the classroom here at warren hills high school. >> he just was a real well rounded kid. >> reporter: murray died friday night after taking a hard hit in a football game against summit. evan walked off the field himself, but shortly after he collapsed. >> as an emt, i take care of football players on the field when they go down, and first responder out on the field, so i can relate to what they had to go through. >> reporter: in addition to the emts and the ambulance standing by at the game friday night, warren hills had both a team doctor and trainer on the sidelines. news 4 learned that goes above and beyond what new jersey high school sports officials require. >> i've spoken directly with our school physician and he assured me we had absolutely first rate readiness and preparedness for any evaluatety. >> reporter: evan is the third high school football player in the u.s. who's died in september

alone. according to the national center for catastrophic sports injury research, in the last two years, 29 high school football players have died either directly in a game or indirectly, collapsing after practice. >> we were in total shock, just not something you expect from somebody so young. >> the warren hills community and the larger football community have rallied around the murray family. a go fund me page has raised almost $50,000 and more than 2,500 have signed a politician to change the name of the warren hills football field to evan murray stadium in his memory and retire the number 18 jersey in his honor. late this afternoon the medical examiner announced murray died of internal bleeding due to a lacerated spleen. his teammates say he did take a hard hit to the stomach before collapsing on the sideline on friday night. the medical examiner also noted that he had an enlarged spleen to begin with, which may have put him at greater risk for this sort of a devastating injury.

the moments from the pope's visit a lot of people are still talking about a voice that no one could really believe. >> i still get chills every time i hear it. another example of something so special coming out of philadelphia. tim furlong joins us with details about the local young man who sang that beautiful song. we were in awe, sitting right here. >> it was mind blowing, really mind blowing. this amazing weekend with the pope, there were about 20 moments you could consider show stoppers, but bobby hill, the 14-year-old boy who was asked at the last minute to sing and fill time, this was a highlight. ♪ >> mark wahlberg said he has the vis of an angel. the show's producer asked him to fill time, don't worry about it, he can do it himself, he rehearsed in front of andrea bocelli. he was a guest on the "today"

the eagles finally got their first win. >> as for the rest of the running backs, chip kelly may be looking for divine intervention. john clark joining us with more. john? >> talking some injuries and the eagles got their first win yesterday without five key players and now dealing with more injuries. cody parkey is out for the season after injuring his leg in warmups and linebacker keiko alonso is visiting a doctor to see if he needs surgery again. the eagles smallest weapon but biggest weapon may have saved the season. it was a 3-0 game when darren sproles ignited the birds with an 89-yard punt return touchdown, longest in his career. he's 5'6", one of the smaller players to play in nfl history. that's his third returned touchdown, most in the nfl since he joined the team last year. when eagles coaches tell other players about their work ethic and how to survive, they tell their players to watch this guy, darren sproles. here's chip kelly today.

bahamas. we'll be watching that very closely this week. it's expected to move towards our area as we go into the weekend. i'll show you the updates in just a minute. right now 81 in allentown, also philadelphia, upper 70s areas north and west, even in glassboro, also dover, 81 degrees, millville, and wilmington. warm day, here's a live look outside. clouds around, sprinkles here and there, but most part just overcast skies. so a live look out on satellite and radar, clouds, sprinkles mostly north and west of philadelphia, but more rain is just down to our south. very unsettled weather pattern through the entire eastern seaboard. we're going to see more heavy rain into tomorrow night. temperatures seem mild overnight with the fog developing. 9:00 tomorrow morning we could see a few light showers around, then we go into the afternoon, we could also see more scattered showers, temperatures near 80

degrees and then look what happens late tomorrow, into wednesday, mostly while you're sleeping through the overnight hours. very heavy rain moves in. areas north and west you could see localized flooding. either way, heavy rain moving through. most should be gone for the morning commute, so by wednesday, chance of showers through the afternoon, but a lot of the heavy rain should be out of here, temperatures cooler as we go into wednesday. then we watch the tropics after that. tropical depression is down by the bahamas. very far away at this point, it's close to becoming a tropical storm. we'll be watching that very closely into the end of the week. here's pretty much the setup as this gets closer towards the weekend. big area of high pressure to the north in canada blocking this thing and keeping it to the south, but as the models are putting it near the bahamas, develops into a tropical storm soon, its name would be joaquin.

we'll be watching that, as well, into tomorrow. some of the models continue to bring it up to the north just to the south of our area and this would cause it to give us quite a bit of rainfall. strong onshore winds, potential for coastal and localized flooding, but, of course, the question is going to be where along the midatlantic states, up towards the northeast, will it actually hit land? but the computer models are consistent at bringing it up to the north and moving a little bit faster as we get closer to our area, but either way the main area that we're going to be watching is from about north carolina, up to new england. we'll be watching that as we go into the weekend. for tonight, isolated showers, fog developing again, 67 for the low in philadelphia, 64 degrees areas north and west. for tomorrow, warm and humid, showers heaviest at night, especially as we go into very early wednesday. temperatures in the low 80s again tomorrow, still another warm day. then we go into wednesday.

this is nbc 10 news. >> a gene test is helping some women with early stage breast cancer skip chemotherapy without hurting their chances of beating the disease. the test, sponsored by the national cancer institute, shows how genes can play a role in determining individual patient risks. it accurately identified a group of women whose cancers were most likely to respond to hormone blocking drugs. adding chemo to those patients would do little if any good. this announcement could change the way tickets are sold online. today new york senator chuck schumer said he's introducing a new bill that cracks down on hackers using bop to snag popular concert tickets before real fans have a chance to get

some of the stories. >> more than 800,000 people did witness the pope making history on the parkway, but mayor nutter says the media scared many people away and local business owners say they didn't see the crowds the city predicted. good evening, everyone, i'm jim rosenfield. the world spotlight was bright on philadelphia for 36 hours, but what a difference a day makes. today it is back to business and a time to reflect on a successful world meeting of families. harry hairston joining us with more. harry? >> at this hour, the city is calling the papal mass a success, but not all agree. some viewers contacted nbc saying they waited for hours to get through security checkpoints and some business owners tell us they were disappointed with the low turnout of customers. >> good morning, everyone, sorry to hold you out. >> mayor michael nutter has an easy answer about why security lines were long and why businesses and restaurants were slower than expected. he blamed the media. >> i think the reporting on any

number of aspects of this was detrimental to the mindset of many philadelphians and others. i think that in some instances you all scared the -- out of people. >> reporter: the owner of fergie's pub planned for more business than he got. he's blaming the city. >> what did happen, i think our regular customer base were scared away by the city, and the p.r. that went with it. >> reporter: the folks working say they were happy about the papal visit, but when it came to business -- >> we expected larger crowds than did show. >> reporter: i asked mayor nutter if he thought travel restrictions on streets and sidewalks played a role and slowed restaurant business. >> no, i don't really think that, whether it's security restrictions or travel restrictions or roads, et cetera, et cetera, some number of people figured out how to get here and enjoy themselves.
