new from overnight, finally heavy rain. much of the nbc 10 viewing area got a good soaking overnight. our cameras caught these soggy conditions just down the street. and take a look at nbc 10 first alert radar. you haven't seen this much green in a while. you can see how big the system is. more rain is coming and maybe a lot more. we have an update on tropical storm joaquin. good morning. i'm chris cato. let's head to weather with bill. >> right now we're watching the

heavy rain push out of the region. it's already drying out in philadelphia. much of the other areas drying out. you can see pennsylvania is quickly drying out. still some showers in north jersey and pennsylvania. those are pulling away. there is still a chance of shower as the day goes on. we're looking at the 70s. 73 at allentown. it's a warm start. in fact, we're 'above our normal warm temperatures at this hour. we should warm into the low 70s, but we're heading to the upper 70s today. lots of shower but not too many. there's a chance of scattered showers at 6:00, 7:00, and noon. wheel go through the forecast neighborhood by neighborhood. but for now katy zachry has your

traffic. >> your drive times during the trouble spots between woodhaven and the vine spring expressway, there's a little. but everything is moving pretty smoothly. that's because there is very little volume on the road. the roadways are wet. this is in mt. laurel. you can see the rain on the road glistening in our traffic camera. you're encouraging to go slowly. this is not a morning to be racing. you want to leave with plenty of time for your commute. they're all free and clear right now of any issues. i'll be watching for any construction sites but keep in mind on many of the bridges are slick. the storm has the attention of several shore communities.

there were kids inside. thankfully no reports of injuries. we do have a crew on the scene and we'll check in shortly and give you more information on that. one final juror. that's what they need to get today before they can get opening statements in the case. campbell faces third-degree murder charges for the collapse of a brick wall. that wall fell onto a salvation army thrift store killing six, injured others. now, sean benzchop who was working on the heavy machinery at the time pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and causing a catastrophe. he faces up to 20 years in prison when he's sentenced next month. from our trenton bureau,

state and local officials will join law enforcement and faith-based leaders to talk about a stronger community. the goal is to form partnerships to address violence and crime. they'll discuss ways to improve community confidence and trust in police. they'll also look at how departments investigate alleged police misconduct. it's 4:05 now. temple university students need to remain vigilant when walking off campus. police still haven't caught the man who sexually assaulted a student when she walked home from the library monday night. it happened on the main campus near carlisle street. the student told police the man approached her from behind, hit her in the arm with handgun, and sexually assaulted her. she immediately alerted the system. that's when they sent out alerts to the entire campus. >> probably would have

somebody's boyfriend, friend to walk me. i never thought anything could happen around here. it's a pretty quiet part of town, lit up. all that kind of stuff. >> we should point out that the university offers escorts that will walk you home. that happens from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. a . 4:06 now. a student took a realistic toy gun to school will not face felony charges. a 15-year-old brought an airsoft gun into the high school yesterday. the officers swarmed the school, put the building on lock done until they dis covered the gun wasn't real. the authorities charged the 15-year-old with a misdemeanor. a fired up police commissioner said it should be a felony.

possibility we'll see more scattered showers during the day today. tracking the last few showers through the area right now but over the next few days we're likely to get more rain. in fact, there's a potential for more heavy rainfall in our area and we're still watching joaquin and still barely a tropical storm. joaquin has strengthened considerably overnight. 73 degrees. rain falls in allentown. northeast is a lighter rain right now. and atlantic city getting a bray from the rain at 74 degrees. warm all around. you can see the cloud over citizens bank park. most of the day, it will not be raining but you might want to grab an umbrella just in case. the visibility thanks to the rain down to 2 1/2 miles. not seeing any fog. the rest of the area, visibility not an issue this morning. humidity, you'll certainly feel

that. 100% humidity for pottstown and dover, 97%. showers, thunderstorms pushing away from us for now. not much going on in delaware. you can see a sprinkle or two. that's what you're going to see this morning and a chance of more scattered showers during the day, but no big rain today. that's going to wait until later this week. for today, occasional showers possible with some breaks of sunshine not completely out of the question. 68 degrees. 74 for allentown, reading, and quakertown up to 76 degrees. definitely cooler. 76 for trenton while doylestown hit 73. 77 with a scattered shower in mt. holly and along the coastline it's 750s for cape ma and rehoboth.

majors in pennsylvania, 95 along caster avenue, really free and clear of any traffic issues. very little construction. but, again, a rainy commute. keep in mind as you're headed out the door. chris? >> next we have details on a developing story overnight from georgia. that state has executed a female prisoner for the first time in 70 years. it happened just hours ago after last-minute appeals ran out. next we'll recount the days of kelly renee gessenger and her final moments. most of the roads are back open. we'll find out one group who preferred them the way they were. some streets have water on them, too, this morning after a lot of rain overnight. this is a view of the ben franklin parkway where many of those streets were closed over the weekend. things are getting back to normal now. we'll have a live report coming up along with meteorologist bill

he'll have much more on that coming up. breaking news overnight. for the first time in decades the state executed a woman who was convicted of murdering her-. nbc 10's tracy davidson is live in the weather center. they carried this out after a final legal decision, right? >> one major legal move, the last major legal move. authorities put kelly gissendaner to death by lethal injection. this is where the execution happened 1592:21 this morning. dozens of supporters and death penalty opponents prayed and sang. a jury convicted her of killing her husband. you may recall pope francis

called an end to the death penalty. a reporter who witnessed it recalled her final moments. >> once the execution start shed began singing "amazing grace" and sang it all through. no glitches that i could detect. it went as it's supposed to go, i guess. >> kelly was 47 years old. before she died she apologized to her family say sheg hopes they can find some peace and happiness. at 4:16 let's get back to that breaking news we told you about ten minutes ago where police are on the scene of a home invasion robbery. the crime scene, again s on cellar street. two men wearing ski masks barged into the home, tied him up and ransacked the place. no word on what they were looking for, if they got away with anything. we do know there were children

inside the home at the time. no reported injuries though. we do have an nbc 10 crew headed to the scene. we now know that the trial date is set for the first of the six baltimore police officers charged in the death of freddie gray. officer william porter shone here on the top right of your screen will be in court november 30th for his charges which include manslaughter and assault. all six officers will be tried sep prattly. gray died in april a week after sustaining injuries while in the back of a baltimore police van. 4:17 now. a south dakota man faces life in prison for killing the 2-year-old son of minnesota vikings star adrian peterson. a jury took a few hours to deliver that guilty verdict. he murdered peterson's son while the two were alone in an apartment in 2013. patterson will be sentenced at

later date. and there's more backlash against the dentist who killed a lion. investigators say those woman used black paint to write insult on the dental officers's signs. palmer returned to work earlier this month following the killing of that beloved lion in zimba e zimbabwe. in colorado springs security cameras at a wells fargo bank show a person setting a jar of gasoline on fire. look at the flames here. police believe he was burned in that massive fireball that skploe exploded in his face. he came back to get his bag and took off of a bicycle. there are some key things they're looking for. >> singed eyebrows, singed hair, some type of burns around their face or mouth.

they were wearing a bandanna, so there's a chance that that cloth could have caught on fire and singed around their face or mouth. >> he could face arson charges if found. tony stewart is holding a news conference. there are rumors he'll retire. he'd tied for 13th place. he was innen involved last year with that driver who was killed on the track. 19 minutes after 4:00. you can hear the drenching rain overnight, but since then, since the heavy rain we're seeing just a few scattered showers in the area. still plenty of cloud cover as you see from this type of murky

view. the wind will be blowing not terribly strong. just enough. look at that humidity back where we were yesterday, except it's warmer this morning. seven degrees warmer this hour, giving us a temperature of 7 f degrees. scattered lighter showers for philadelphia right now. high levelier rain later this week. yesterday we saw%i a foggy view here. this is the view from sky top lodge. the temperature's unusually warm. normally this time of year we should see readings in the lower 50s. look at trenton, 75 degrees. farther north and west, allentown, quakertown, low 70s. 70s for middle town and dover. atlantic city, the airport, 75 degrees right now. showers, just a few scattered

showers in new jersey. the heavier rainfall is now off to the northeast. we'll still see scattered showers during the day. but the forecast showing the heavy rainfall pulling away. you might need the umbrella at times and there are more showers on the way. not a lot of rainfall there but a possibility of showers at the shore. that's 4:00 thursday afternoon. as we go into friday, here comes a chance for heavier steadier rainfall. this is thursday night. you can see the rain developing to the south. and that moisture coming up the coastline could be heavy at times into friday afternoon. there's philadelphia. follow this rain to the south. and you will find joaquin. joaquin is a strong tropical storm right now just short of hurricane strength. winds now of 70 miles an hour. and joaquin is supposed to stay put for the next several days to the south. but then it looks like it's

going to make a move and to the north. for this evening, tomorrow, and into friday evening, joaquin stays to the south. but some stays strong. then it heads to the north. that will start spreading clouds to the area. it looks like by saturday evening the track become as little more uncertain. there's a possibility it could go to the north by sunday evening. that could bring us heavy rainfall if that happens. there's still a lot of uncertainty on the track of joaquin. for your the day,ite going be a warm and muggy one with temperatures in the 70s to near 80 this afternoon and occasional showers. we'll go through the full seven days in the next half hour. 4:22. let's good another check of the major traffic.

three days after pope francis left philadelphia, all lanes are open with the exception of the ones by the ben franklin parkway. those will be reopened soon. a group called open streets philadelphia is asking the city to open three open street weekends next summer, no drivers allowed. they say it created a sense of freedom for people to walk in the roadways. it also said that bikers could discover new routes around the city -- bicycle, i mean, by bikers -- it has support from local decision makers. and we also have these new numbers showing just how the pope's visit impacted the economy. it turns out that many businesses got less than half the customers they would get on a typical weekend. a survey of businesses from the city controllers office show
