look at rain coming through some of the hallways there. that's how bad this is. we'll take a look currently at north carolina. we've got flooding there. look at how much this came down and then, this is miami, i'm sorry, and then we're going to go to north carolina, and can you see all the flooding. look at this. along the coast there, along the outer banks, and then we're going to end up in frederick, maryland, where you can see the rain coming down, traffic a big problem, and this is going to continue today right on into tomorrow and the weekend. here's the first batch of rain. heavy rain pushing through. there's a front moving through. before the next three days is out we're talking up to five inches of rain along the carolina coast, but then joaquin is the big, big problem we've got to deal with. right now we expect it might have been a hurricane by 5:00 a.m. not yet. 240 miles east northeast of the central bahamas. 70-mile-per-hour winds. just below a hurricane moving west southwest at six miles per hour. we've got hurricane watches and

warnings up now for the bahamas. five to ten inches of rain possible, and these hurricane force winds will go from east to west. here's the track. it becomes a category one storm sometime early tomorrow morning and then watch this track, making its way up towards the northeast. now, the cone of uncertainty, 520 mishlgs but it's still a category one storm off the new jersey coast right now. we've got two scenarios. we've got this ridge of high pressure. that blocks it, and maybe moves it away, but we've also got an upper level low and a trough of low pressure. which one wins out? right now we think the trough of low pressure wins out and draws this closer to the coast and brings that -- that storm system right along the northeast coast. will it make landfall as a hurricane? we have to wait and see but no matter what happens we've got a lot of rain to talk about. look at this -- this area of 12 inches or more right along the delmarva peninsula. never mind that though.

seven inches possible us a make your way along the carolina coast and then as you get into the northeast five to seven inches. guys, we could have up to eight to 12 inches of rain so we're talking massive flooding, high winds. winds could be sustained at 50 to 60 miles per hour as we get on into saturday on into sunday. >> you just used every trick that monitor has to offer. >> i've got a couple more. >> i watched it. >> i've got a couple more. >> that was impressive. >> al, thank you so much. overnight the only woman on georgia's death row was execute the. this is the first woman put to death in georgia in 70 years. kelly gissandanner was convicted of killing her husband, a killing killed out by her boyfriend. >> that came after a fleury of last-minute appeals failed. the archbishop wrote to the parole board on behalf of pope francis who called for a world wide ban on his death penalty during his visit to the united

states. >> an unjust and necessary punishment should never exclude the hope and the goal of rehabilitation. >> papal appeals for individual cases not unheard of. john paul ii was successful in getting a missouri inmate off death row. that was in 1999. the sentence commuted to life without parole. speaking of pope francis, there's word this morning that during his u.s. trip he met secretly with kim davis. she's the controversial county clerk in kentucky who was jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. nbc's hallie jackson is following this story for us. hallie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. kim davis and her husband were in washington last week to receive an award from the family research council, a conservative advocacy group in recognition of her stand against same-sex marriage, and it's during that same trip she reportedly met with pope francis.

according to kim davis' lawyer davis and her husband joe were secretly driven to the vatican embassy last thursday afternoon. the couple meeting with the pope who spoke with them in english for about 15 minutes. in a statement released overnight, davis' attorney says the county clerk was humbled to meet the pontiff saying who am i to have this rare opportunity? i am just a county clerk who loves jesus and desires with all my heart to serve him. davis' attorney says the pope also held out his hands and asked davis to pray for him, thanking her for her courage and telling her to, quote, stay strong. nbc news could not verify the statements from davis' attorney with the vatican, but it comes after the pope spoke about her situation on his plane trip back to the vatican. a reporter asked the pope about government officials who refuse to perform their duties because of religious objections to same-sex marriage. the pope, not mentioning davis by name, saying conscientious objection is a right that is a part of every human right, and if a government official is a human person, he has that right.

davis, a county clerk from kentucky, was jailed for five days after refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. >> it's never been a gay or lesbian issue for me. it has been about upholding the word of god and how god defines marriage from the very beginning of time. >> reporter: her actions sparking protests across the country, reportedly leading to a secret meeting in the nation's capital with one of the world's top religious leaders. the pope, as you know, did not make gay marriage a central topic of his trip here last week. a vatican spokesman told the associated press he had no comment on the pope's reported meeting with davis but didn't deny that it happened. matt, savannah? >> all right, hallie jackson in washington, thank you. in the race for the white house donald trump appears to be switching things up a little bit with kind of a new charm offensive while another batch of hillary clinton's e-mails being released today. we'll get to that and break things down with nicolle wallace in a moment, but first nbc national correspondent peter alexander has more on the

by clinton's political opponents and independent fact-checkers in the press just as she is sliding further in the polls, especially in comparison to joe biden. he was teased about a possible run at the u.n. tuesday. >> mr. president, vice president, sorry, i'm -- well, could have been, can be, who knows. >> in our new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll biden would be the most popular candidate in either party if he runs. the vice president would also outperform clinton in hypothetical matchups with any of the top-tier republicans. clinton now acknowledges the e-mail controversy is hurting. her husband suggested republicans are keeping it alive. >> i trust the american people. they will get this. they will work through it. they will understand that they are being sent a heavy signal we don't want to run against this woman. just give us somebody else. >> reporter: now most of the e-mails to be released today are from 010 and 2011. after today there will still be

four more releases all the way through january. that ensures this could well remain an issue for clinton all the way up to when voters are making their first decisions in those primaries and caucuses in february. matt and savannah. >> andrea mitchell in washington, thank you. >> msnbc contributor nicolle wallace served as white house communications director for president george w. bush. nicole, nice to see you. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> hi. >> let's go back to the republican side and start with donald trump. >> right. >> kind of a pivotal moment in his campaign right now, trying to show a softer side with the profile in "people" magazine. >> right. >> you've been around a lot of candidates and campaigns. how hard is it to turn momentum around once it begins to slip? >> well, i would argue that he's still got a commanding lead in all of the polls, and while he may not be gaining strength, he was gaining strength at an unsustainable rate, but he is still soundly at top of the polls, and, you know, this is still donald trump's landscape and the rest of the campaigns are having to exist in it. i talked to the other campaigns.

we're at end of a fund-raising cycle and other campaigns would be report totals significantly less than if donald trump weren't in the sglas why is that? he's not taking the money? >> i know, but it's not like he's taking the money, he's sucking up the media oxygen. >> made the perfect link. if you don't have the media oxygen you can get in front of your donors and show what you're about. scott walker dropped out last week. you talked about it already, and that was in part to show his donors he was mounting an effective campaign. >> donald trump released a tax plan on monday. it's allotted like other gop candidates' tax plans, although critics immediately pounced on it and said that it will explode the deficit. was he smart to release it? >> well, so it's like the other folks' tax plans but as with all things trump it's huge. it's the gynormous tax plan that we could never afford except in a trump world. like everything trump is outside. some people call it outlandish.

i've heard from economists that 95% of them say it's completely unsound economically speaking, but trump is at least starting to do the sorts of quote, unquote normal things that a candidate has to do. >> let's talk about the democrats, hillary clinton tonight, another batch of e-mails released. you've been in these jobs, communications director for a candidate, for a president. what would you advise hillary clinton i guess if you were a democrat. >> yeah. >> but if you were in that job, how is she supposed to deal with something that she acknowledges is a drip, drip, drip that will not let up? >>'s time for her to go george costanza and do the opposite. everything she's been doing give the opposite. given these prosecutely cringeworthy interviews where she's parsing everything she says. she needs to go somewhere where she can loosen it up, maybe, you know, have a martini next to her and say i blew, it i screwed it up, and i'm going to sit here until you have no more questions for me. we may be here six hours and i will answer every question in normal english language. >> first time this week we've

advance by the taliban since u.s. forces first arrived in that country in 2001. this comes on the heels of three air strikes the u.s. launched in the past two days on taliban targets near kunduz which fell monday to the taliban dealing a major blow to the u.s.-backed government there. right now the administration's plan is to pull out most of the nearly 10,000 u.s. troops by the end of next year, but with this development, the question becomes will they stay in afghanistan as part of a residual nato force? military analysts point to how the violence escalated in iraq after u.s. troops pulled out of there in 2011 providing an opening for isis militants. natalie. >> all right. chris jansing at white house for us, thank you, chris. the president of planned parenthood cecile richards faced five hours of intense questioning on capitol hill yesterday and richards told members of a house committee she is proud of her organization's work supporting fetal tissue research. she says secretly recorded video

the team. >> they were afraid to get hit by bigger, stronger kids. >> reporter: ridgefield memorial is just one of several schools that has given up on america's most popular sport this season, and the reasons, declining interest and serious injuries. in fact, this month alone three student players from around the country died from on-field injuries. the latest, new jersey high school quarterback evan murray whose spleen ruptured after being tackled in a game friday night. >> we were in total shock, just not something that you expect from somebody so young. >> reporter: nationwide football is still the number one sport for high school boys with around 1.08 million players. and while that's a 2.4% drop from five years ago, football still outnumbers track and field, basketball and soccer in popularity. but as interest in those other sports grows, more and more high schools, including former missouri stayed champion maplewood richmond heights, are

we'll see if joaquin gets upgraded to a hurricane. it's just below hurricane strength right now. in fact, as we put the maps into motion and show you we've got joaquin right now currently threatening the bahamas. it's currently 240 miles east north central bahamas and 70-mile-per-hour winds moving west southwest 76 miles per hour and hurricane watches and warnings up, five to ten inches of rain expect. hurricane force winds will be spreading from east to west, and here's the track. we expect it to become a hurricane between now and early tomorrow morning, and then hug the coast and perhaps by early monday morning 90-mile-per-hour winds threatening the northeast. it's a 520-mile cone of uncertainty, so it could be either edge of that track. we've got that ridge. if the ridge stays strong then that kind of push tes more out to sea, but we've also got a southeastern upper level low and this trough of low pressure. if that stays strong it draws it more in between. so the official track kind of takes the middle crowned and

brings it right on up and makes its way into the northeast. next seven days, doesn't matter where it comes in on landfall or makes landfall. we could be looking at 12 inches of rain possible. in the short term we've got a lot of heavy rain making its way that already came its way through the northeast and making its way up into new england. morning rush, boston, logan, going to probably have some major delays and look at some rainfall amounts we're talking about next three days. forget about joaquin. this is about joke yip. five inches along the carolina coast into the delmarva peninsula, but even as we make our way into the northeast and new england we've got anywhere from three to five inches of rain. i'm meteorologist bill henley. scattered showers during the day. and through it all it's going to be warm and muggy. lighter showers today. 70s this afternoon. closer to 80. but, cooler ahead, occasional

at six, and in fact they have posted hurricane watches and warnings for much of the balm ioossias. five to ten inches of rain possible. some areas as much as 15 inches. the hurricane starts to move west friday morning and stakes a bit of a turn. still fairly close to the coast. by early monday morning it's a 90-mile-per-hour category 1 storm. the kevin uncertainty, about 520 miles wide so we have to really watch this closely. we've got two scenarios. the upper level ridge out in the atlanta keeps it out to sea. the low pressure system makes that way and brings the ridge and trough in so in between the two we are looking at a real problem as we move on into monday morning. let's get a check of our top news stories now. for that we turn to natalie. >> all right, thanks so much, al. a lawyer for kim davis, the county clerk who was jailed for refusing marriage licenses to gay couples says davis had a secret meeting last week with the pope. nbc's hallie jackson is in

washington with more. hallie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. kim davis' attorney says the pope thanked davis for her courage and told her to stay strong in their 15-minute talk at the vatican embassy adding davis was humbled to meet the pope here in washington. the encounter reportedly happening when davis was in town last week to receive an award from a conservative advocacy group for her stand against same-sex marriage. the county clerk, as you know, spent five days in jail earlier this month for refusing to issue those marriage licenses to same-sex couples in kentucky. nbc news has to the been able to verify the statements from davis' attorney with the vatican, but a spokesman there told the associated press he had no comment though didn't deny that this meeting happened. natalie. >> we'll find out more, i'm sure. hally jackson. thanks so much. for the first time in 70 years, georgia has put a female prisoner to death. 47 years kelly gissendaner was executed overnight by lethal injection. she was convicted of murder for having her boyfriend stab her husband to death in 1997.

the boyfriend is serving life in prison. georgia's parole board rejected a last-minute plea for clemency on behalf of the pope and the u.s. supreme court refused to intervene. a crime that was caught on camera has police in colorado looking for a suspect who may have burns on his face and arms. the man is seen shoving a fire bomb into a bank drop box. he then gets hit by the resulting flash there of flame but was still able to ride away on his bicycle. and it was an amazing sight over southern california when 202 sky divers from around the world jumped from nine different planes on tuesday. took them three tries to get this right, but they were able to link up and set a record for the largest geometric formation. no small achievement, as you see there, when you're falling at 120 miles an hour. that's impressive, wow. >> amazing. >> very cool. >> an upcoming "today" show segment, five of us, six of us. >> geometric shapes. >> you first.

>> thanks so much. are you one of the millions of americans taking supplements to maintain good health and strong bones? new research out today casting doubt on the necessity of certain supplements and what should you do with all of the pills? dr. natalie azar is a contributor for nbc. good morning. >> good morning, savannah. >> a study that throws up in the air everything we thought we gnaw about what is good for us so what's the bottom line here? >> well, the bottom line i think on a light note is if you're waking up in the morning and feel guilt benot taking your supplements, you don't have to feel guilty anymore, but importantly the stuff that's coming out of this research from the british medical journal is actually not new. we have had for a number of years now, u.s. health officials have made the recommendation that calcium supplementation probably doesn't prevent osteoporosis or fractures in older individuals. specifically the two studies that were reported yesterday looked at both an association between calcium intake with diet or supplement and whether or not tim proves bone density and the other study looked at whether or not it actually prevents

fracture which is the most important end point. neither of those studies looked terribly promising. >> so the supplements aren't necessary, it sounds like. >> right. >> and even eating calcium rich foods. >> is not preventive, and that's sort of an important dispinks here is we've known for a number of years or we've had research over the last number of years that calcium supplementation might cause more harm than good and increase your risk for heart attack, cardio vascular event or increase kidney stones so the logical conclusion is maybe if i take it through my diet i won't have the cardio vascular side effect and i'll help my bones and this is what the study yesterday sort of debunk that had whole idea, but importantly we're not people not to take calcium at all, right? >> that's what i was wondering. pup put up on the screen the good sourcesalcium, are you supposed to take it or not? >> when you hear it it sounds incongruent. you need calcium or vitamin d to get strong bones and that's true, and the idea here is if you're taking extra over what is a normal dietary amount, normal

people probably take around 700 to 800 milligrams a day, but recommendation, if you look at an nih website from the institute of medicine, the recommendation is higher, it's 1,000 milligrams generally from ages 9 to 50 and for women it's 600 and the high amount is what we're basically trying to get away from. >> your average amount is what you should take. >> and a really important note to leave viewers with is there's something called the peak bone mass when you're young, anned a lessnent your 20s ask the time that you're going to gain the most amount of bone strength that's going to last you throughout your lifetime so it's kind of like taking calcium after the age of 50 you're sort of playing catchup. what can you do instead, weight bearing exercise. have some vitamin k in the diet and screened for vitamin d deficiency, avoid excess alcohol, avoid smoking. there are a lot of other things can you do besides popping a pill of calcium that will maintain good bone health. >> and get ahead of it.

your wine bottles into, holiday season and a lot of empty bottledles will be hanging around. there you have an image. get a bottle and this tool, this is what you're going to need tool-wise to make it happen. one trick that i want to show you here, before you put your wick you want to get a ring and tape it and when you tape it tape it to the wick at well that way it doesn't fall down in the bottle and stays where you need to stay. use tiki and if you're in texas where i am where mosquitos are a problem, citronella. >> these brackets are cool. >> very, very nice. >> and so very easy to put. >> all you have to. do have a bracket right here, put it into your bottle right there. >> just tighten. >> tighten it up and then attach this to your fence. >> that's great. >> and it's good to go. >> do it yourself with camila alves. i didn't see that coming. >> can you do that? >> now i can, now that you've

for simple hors d'oeuvres and small plates and for sips, cocktails too. >> i love that. now you're speaking my language. >> chicken wings are simple to make. go to a butcher and buy really healthy looking lean looking chicken wings. >> okay. >> a chicken wing is in three parts, and this is the little drumlet. >> yeah. >> you can make that almost into a struck stick, if you wish, but it's really the wing and i like to leave them hole. we fry these. fry these in saffron oil at 350 degrees. keep a watch. depends on the size of the wing. takes around eight to ten minutes to fry and once they are fried you dip them into two-thirds of a cupch your favorite hot sauce. >> oh, i like it hot. >> and mixed with about four tablespoons of melted butter. >> i don't know if you know this, martha, but now we have a taste tester table downstairs. >> all of these are going down

there. >> i think matt lauer already put his order in for chicken wings. >> amazing. >> someone at this table might be nursing a hangover. i'm not going to say who. >> natalie? >> not me. >> cooled them a little tiny bit and get them completely coated with this hot sauce mixture and drain them. >> great. >> and eat them with a light blue cheese dressing, the best chicken wings you've ever tasted. >> do you agree, taste testers in. >> blue chose made out of sour cream, mayonnaise and a little bit of milk and blue cheese. >> recipe on today.com. >> my favorite is the tandori chicken weeks. >> like the sound that have. >> yogurt is the base and the salt. >> safflower oil.

do you need that at a specialty store? >> tumeric, cayenne. >> love it. >> a mixture every indian household has a tandoor mix. you can buy that and forget all the separate ingredients. >> yogurt and all the special spices. >> make little xs with a sharp knife along the wing. >> and why are we doing that? >> the spice prermates the chicken and indians are pushing spice down along the ben and coat these and put them on a baking sheet. you want to see these. >> those go in the oven. >> and here we have some already baked. >> have you tried the tandoori once. >> our favorite. >> big winner there. >> amazing. >> and i'm guilty of that hangover and it's working.

>> these are healthy looking wings. these are big. i think of wings as teeny tiny. >> and when they come out of the oven hot you brush them with some mango chutney. >> do you like mango chutney? >> i do, love it with my indians meals and put them backed in oven so they are glazed. this is what they are look like when they are done. >> what's your sauce? >> yogurt and granny smith apple or a cucumber greated. >> almost like a greek thing. >> this is a wonderful honey miso chicken wing. >> okay. >> so it's honey, some fresh miso and a little bit of black pepper. >> great. >> and just coat the chicken wings with this mixture, broil. >> broil. >> or put in the oven at 450 degrees, and -- and until they are done. again, it takes about 15 to 16 minutes, and then this is what they look like. >> i've got to say this could be an appetizer or an ent tray. >> and --

is just south of new jersey. there's a 520-mile cone of uncertainty. we've got high pressure, if that high pressure dominates, it drags the -- the hurricane away, but there's a trough of low pressure along the coast, and it looks like that's going to be stronger and so that's going to hug -- keep it closer to the coast. whether this makes landfall or not, look at the rainfall amounts, anywhere from 5 to 7 inches locally, possibly 12 inches along the delmarva peninsula. so this is going to be a big weather-maker, rain, winds, flooding, freeze down. it is going to be a mess going into early next week. good morning. i'm meteorologist bill henley. scattered showers during the day. through it all, it's going to be warm and muggy. lighter showers today. 70s this afternoon. close to 80 degrees. cooler ahead. occasional showers thursday, 59 degrees. then as we head toward the weekend, here comes wind and
