5:03 pm
moisture from it. it will grab on to it. then eventually push it back out to sea. but it will be having big impacts on our area. the question's still too far out in time to notice. but where exactly it's going to move inland as it gets absorbed into that front. could be from the north carolina coast up closer to our area and that would be mostly saturday into monday. but take a look at what the computer models are doing. eventually the storm will take a turn to the north and see what it does around the carolinas. looks crazy here. but stationary front i showed you, that's what it's doing. it's getting absorbed into it and getting pushed back up to the north. we'll be dealing with wind and rain possible beach erosion and local flooding that is going to be concerned, all of these things starting friday over the weekend, possibly early next week, too. we'll take a closer look at timing. more details coming up. >> team coverage continues in new jersey and delaware. >> threat of flooding from both of these storms people are not

potential 0 more heavy rain, some people spent today cleaning up from what rolled through here overnight. look at this video, weather toppled this tree in norris town. no one hurt here but it left behind quite the mess in that road. tonight it was a tornado that caused this damage to our west. this video's in from lancaster today. the national weather service confirmed an ef-1 tornado ripped apart the warehouse this morning. it can carry wind up to 100 miles per hour. the owner showed up today and wasn't sure what happened. >> looked like a bomb went off. i -- out back it didn't look too bad. in front, stuff's all over the place. >> two people inside that warehouse during the storms at the time, but both are doing okay right now. last night's storms are gone but plenty more on the way. >> sheena's back with a closer look at first alert forecast. >> we have a lot to talk about. first, changing temperatures.

so we're going to watch a cold front move through. it's going to get cooler and brezy as we go through overnight hours. you'll notice that tomorrow. more rain coming, too, friday and into the weekend. and then talking about hurricane joaquin impacting our area. even if it does not hit close, we'll be seeing high winds from it and flooding concerns. right now in philadelphia, cloudy conditions, mid-70s but we will be seeing temperatures dropping off. we have a first alert weather as we go from friday into saturday and this is all ahead of joaquin's impact. this is going to be a separate system. so heavy rain and wind expected, possible flooding especially along the shore. we'll have strong onshore winds. talking about storm surge along the shore and beach erosion and winds gusting close to 50 miles an hour in some areas. so the weather is going to start to deteriorate a lot as we go into the weekend. right now, heavy rain moving off the coast now of sussex county and delaware. most of the air looking cloudy with spotty sprinkles.
5:18 pm
but we have more rain off to the south and this will be moving in as we go into the end of the week. big temperature difference. cool air just back off to the west. this is going to be moving in overnight. we're looking at temperatures in the 80s farther to the south. locally, we have a pretty din temperature spread. if you are in millville or atlantic city, temperature in the mid to upper 70s. allen town and redding around 70. we'll watch these numbers drop as we go overnight tonight. more rain on the way. take a look at future weather. tomorrow the best chance of the rain, mostly through new jersey and delaware up through philadelphia area. then for friday, we have more rain starting to move in, some of this could be locally heavy. at the same time, we're going to have a strong onshore wind. so that's what we're watching for, flooding along the shore, areas inland and saturday weather pattern stays rainy and windy. we'll be watching hurricane joaquin which by saturday is still expected top= be around t bahamas. it not going to move up to the
5:19 pm
north until we go into the later part of the weekend. now we're talking about the shore impacts friday, because of what i showed you. wave heights anywhere 10 to 15 feet with strong onshore winds. we could be looking at widespread beach erosion, high tide, giving us a three-foot storm surge, that's what it looks like so far. there you see storm surge area, atlantic city could be seeing some of the best even south of that or some of the highest with those strong onshore winds. of course we'll be watching that closely, too. now we'll talk about hurricane joaquin. that's still around the bahamas, still category 1 hurricane. max winds 85 miles an hour, moving to the southwest but going to take that turn up to the north. computer model still agreeing on that, that turn up to the north. but you see that left hand turn. that could fall from the carolinas to south of our area, closer to washington. at that time, it could still be a hurricane but you see it starts to do crazy things here. this is because it's going to get absorbed into a stationary front and that's eventually going to push it back away.
5:20 pm
but either way, we expect wind and rain as we go through the weekend. big area of high pressure, going to cause the left hand turn. you see the hurricane by friday, around the bahamas. but that front that i talked about, that's going to be giving us rain going into the weekend, that's the same front that's going to be basically absorbing this storm and bringing it somewhere along the mid-atlantic, down to the carolinas, about saturday through monday. we'll be watching at that time. the location of the storm will determine our impacts, either way we expect a strong onshore wind and also heavy rain. and a lot comes along with that, too, like local flooding. for tonight, cloudy, chance of shower, breezy, cooler overnight. 59 for the low in philadelphia. 54 areas north and west. tomorrow, cool somewhere breezy, showers south and east of philadelphia. rain still stays in the forecast. temperatures reaping mid to low 60s for the area. and there you see, friday and saturday, both in red, because we have first alert with high wind, heavy rain, temperatures cool friday and saturday in the

5:30 pm
this is nbc 10 news. >> nbc 10 tracking big changes in our weather. first, a big cooldown, strong winds and even more rain. then, we could be feeling the impact of this. hurricane joaquin is churning out at sea. but what does that mean for us? >> our team of meteorologists tracking the latest. brittney, tracking our next chance for heavy rain. >> right. the good news, it won't be for tonight or even for the start of tomorrow but as we head into tomorrow night, friday and saturday, that's when we have a first alert weather date issued for both of those days. right as we approach the weekend. the reason why is, as we expect to see heavy downpours we expect to see strong wind speeds as we go into the rest of today. i should say friday and saturday. other thing we're going to continue monitoring is what's
5:31 pm
going to happen closer to the shore. beach erosion a possibility and storm surge. so those are the few things that we're going to track as we head into friday and saturday. so that's the breakdown. those are three headlines as we go into those first alert days. good thing is, make it to work easy breezy as we head into friday, into thursday. but it's friday into saturday we're most concerned with. futurecast shows us, through saturday morning, rainfall totals range between 2 to 4 inches, wind speeds sustained, 15 to 25 miles per hour, gusting up to 35 miles per hour we expect to see street flooding as o'a possibility. for the shore, rainfall totals are higher, closer to 3 to 5 inch. wind speed sustained between 25 and 35 miles per hour, gusting up to 50 miles per hour. effect, the bull's-eye with the storm surge at high tide, closer to 3 feet. that's due to the very strong onshore flow. so these are the things that we're monitoring as we go into friday and saturday. but on top of that, a separate
5:32 pm
situation is hurricane joaquin. check in with first alert meteorologist sheena parveen for the latest on its track and timing. >> so that's going to be the second thing we're watching. the rain and the wind starting friday, that's going to continue as this hurricane gets closer. you may not notice a difference because we're not going to have too much of a lull period in between the two. you will notice conditions deteriorating through the weekend. a live look at the hurricane. right now around the bahamas, category 1 hurricane, it is still seeing max winds 85 miles an hour but moving to the southwest. moving in an opposite direction, eventually it will be starting to move up to the north, up through the atlantic ocean and that's when it will get closer to us. take a look at updated track now. this is going to change before the week is over. i want to show you the cone here. so this goes from sunday into monday. at this time frame, we have north carolina all the way up into our area included in the cone. we have a large area included,
5:33 pm
because everyone in the cone is fair game to see a more direct impact from the storm. either way, we are going to see rain, we're going to see wind. that track will be changing as we get closer. what computer models are showing, take it up to the nor and move inland. but you see they look crazy as we go into the end of the weekend because it will be getting absorbed into a stationary front. it's going to be moving away again. so, here's the setup. i'll show you what i was talking about the front absorbing it. area of high pressure will cause it to turn inland. that's why that cone of uncertainty, what we call it, is wide, including north carolina now. there you see the hurricane by friday, around the bahamas, up to the north, absorbed into the stationary front, and then it will be starting to move inland. that front's going it be pulling up moisture. for us, we'll see wind, rain and watching it closely to see where the hardest impact is going to be. either way, what you need to know, a rainy, windy weekend in store. we'll be looking at localized
