people that reached its peak today there on the school's campus. student cell phone video captured these images of a s.w.a.t. team filing up the stairs inside this ccp building as they searched for the person allegedly armed with a gun in the middle of the spring garden campus. >> there's a gunman, everybody stay still. my mom called me, are you okay, are you okay? >> reporter: emergency calls came in mid-morning, patrol officers, s.w.a.t. teams, and detectives worked in unison with the college. ccp alerted students via text message and quickly offered surveillance video to detectives tracking the suspect. chief inspector joe sullivan led the tactical response. >> in a situation like this, you're literally being bombarded with information, and it's a matter of sorting the information out and deciding what's pertinent. >> reporter: while s.w.a.t. teams searched, detectives reviewed surveillance video and pinpointed the suspect's location. they say the entire team applied

lessons learned after a previous firearm incident at ccp in may of last year. a student was arrested for pulling a gun on a classmate at this same school. >> a lot of the things that we cited from the critique from the last incident automatically, seamlessly went into effect here. >> reporter: investigators say today's incident had no connection to the philly college threats reported yesterday, but for students who didn't know that at first, it was still a terrifying moment. >> and investigators spent the afternoon searching the campus making sure it will be safe for classes tomorrow, but again, no gun has been found, at least thus far. live tonight in the digital operations center, george spencer, nbc 10 news. >> all right, george. students and faculty members were caught up right in the middle of the police search. text alert quickly went out to students at ccp as police and s.w.a.t. units surrounded the

school. many students and faculty were told to remain in their classrooms and remain quiet, but those who could get out of the buildings did. >> the security guard told me that there was a gunman inside and i couldn't go inside the building. and i needed to get away from the school. >> one of the other instructors came in and asked me to keep my students in, so i had my students in for about an hour, then we saw people walking on floors, so the students left and i left. >> a student who was given the all clear was able to record this video of the suspect being led away by police. we have breaking news in delaware. it brings a rough rush hour to drivers on i-95. here is the reason right here, a car collided with this tour bus in newark about an hour ago. the crash happened in the southbound lanes of i-95 near chapel street. two lanes are blocked and traffic is backed up for several miles now. five people are being checked out at a hospital.

right now philadelphia police are looking for as many as half a dozen suspects involved in the murder of a transgender person early this morning. investigators say the victim was attacked along the 1300 block of wingohocking. drew smith is joining us live in studio with the latest from police. drew? >> right now they don't have a motive or any descriptions of the people accused of attacking and killing this transgender 22 year old. police responded to the scene shortly after 2:30 this morning to a call of shots fired. we have video of the area from sky force 10. investigators tell us keisha jenkins was riding in a car and was dropped off here. minutes later five or six men began to assault her. she ended up on the ground, where she was shot twice in the back. doctors pronounced her dead at the hospital. investigators are working on finding witnesses but say it's too early to say if this was a hate crime. they spoke with the victim's family today. >> obviously, they are very sad and i let them know we'll do everything in our power to get to the bottom of this and arrest the individuals responsible.

>> there are several people investigators want to talk to, including the person who dropped jenkins off. detectives are in the process of searching for surveillance video at and around the scene. jim, back to you. >> drew smith, thank you. a south jersey teacher in jail this evening, suspended from his job, as well, for allegedly sexually assaulting a young girl. police have no reason to believe any other children are in danger, but their investigation is just beginning. cydney long spoke to parents at the school and neighbors of the teacher now in custody. >> just want to cry, you know, because i have great grandchildren, children, i just can't imagine. this man doing this. >> reporter: doris beerman is beside herself learning with our visit today that her next door neighbor, 44-year-old rick gazzola is in jail, charged with an unthinkable crime. allegedly sexually assaulted a little girl, younger than 5, inside his home in late june.

it happened while her parents were there visiting. >> i'm glad it's not my child, because i'd be in jail. i'd be in jail because i'd kill him. >> reporter: investigators say due to the sensitive nature of the crime and the child's tender age, a female investigator was brought in to handle the case. parents outside of salem middle school are outraged and upset, wondering if any other children could have been harmed. >> you just don't do that to children. children can't defend themselves. don't take the innocence of a child. >> reporter: the district didn't wish to speak on camera today, but confirmed they were notified of gazzola's arrest late last night. he is temporarily suspended from his teaching position, fifth grade social studies, or from stepping foot on the campus pending further investigation. >> we should have been notified. as soon as he turned himself in and was legally charged, memo should have went out today to parents to let us know there was a predator in our school. >> reporter: the superintendent telling me parents are being notified today. so specifically the parents of

the students that he taught in the fifth grade. beerman plans to alert other residents in their quiet neighborhood. she has this message for the victim's family. >> i don't know, i just pray for them. i'll put it on my prayer list at church. it will just have to be -- it will take a long time. >> reporter: gazzola remains jailed on $100,000 full cash bail. from salem, cydney long, nbc 10 news. who is updating the master plan for pennsylvania schools? well, the answer is nobody, according to an audit "orelease today. it shows pennsylvania's education department road map for statewide education policy has not been updated in 16 years. the auditor is democrat saying the board has no plan to deal with problems facing public schools. the board chairman acknowledges the need to update the master plan. pennsylvania's budget standoff now in its 97th day and this evening we're getting a first look at governor tom wolf's proposal ahead of tomorrow's vote on the house

floor. wolf is pursuing a half percent increase in personal income tax. the governor says the new money will close the deficit and add about $400 million for basic education, but republican leaders say the governor's proposal for higher taxes does not have enough support in the legislature. big step forward today for the developer of a casino near the stadium complex in south philadelphia. the philadelphia planning commission today approved a master plan for the stadium casino facility on packer avenue. it would include a las vegas style casino floor with 2,000 slot machines and more th125 ta games. two hospital networks in philadelphia are about to become one. aria health, which already operates three hospitals, plans to merge with jefferson health. our partners at the philadelphia business journal say back in may aria solicited proposals from potential partners.

to our weather now and another beautiful day today. sunny skies out there, temperatures in the 70s, nbc 10 meteorologist sheena parveen joining us now with our first alert forecast. what a great day, sheena. >> pretty perfect day. temperatures a little bit above normal, but very comfortable. humidity comfortable. we're still in the mid 70s for philadelphia, low 70s right around 70 degrees for the lehigh valley and low 70s to mid 60s through south jersey. 64 in wildwood, 65 degrees in atlantic city. nice and dry on satellite and radar, but you see the clouds moving in. even though you'll see the clouds increasing later this evening for most of the area, we will be staying dry. so for the rest of tonight, temperatures will be dropping into the mid 60s for philadelphia by 8:00 p.m. mid 50s for the poconos, around 60 degrees at the shore. more clouds through the overnight hours, but temperatures still on the cool side when you wake up tomorrow morning. most areas will be in the 50s tomorrow morning and similar to today, then i'm tracking rain chances before the weekend.

after that, temperatures drop down once again. i'll show you the numbers coming up. new at 6:00, an investigation into how a woman died in new castle city, delaware. an employee heading to work around 6:00 this morning found the woman's body in the parking lot of airport plaza. police are looking at surveillance video to see what happens. the woman appears to be in her early 20s. and a similar investigation in mercer county, new jersey, right now homicide detectives are waiting for autopsy results on a woman found dead there this morning. her body discovered in weeds in hamilton townshipment police aren't sure about the cause of death, but they do believe someone killed her. today the trial began for two men charged in a jewelers row kidnapping and torture case. the two men are accused of kidnapping a woman from a philadelphia parking garage, it happened back in april. then they beat and tortured her, according to police. authorities say the men wanted the code to the safe at the jewelry store where she worked.

jury selection started this morning. a third suspect has already pleaded guilty in this case and will be sentenced next month. it's the first of its kind in the country and it is in bucks county. a local database of dna samples. today the unified force announced all 40 townships in the county are gathering dna for a database managed by a private company. police say the state database has wait times that cripple law enforcement investigations. so far that database has been able to nab suspects across township lines. >> not a gun, not a taser, not even a weapon, it's a q-tip. and because of it, we're all much, much more safe as a community. >> police say the database has helped clear cases in other counties, as well, and they say it's also been a valuable tool to exonerate the innocent. a crash early this morning sent two philadelphia police

officers to the hospital. happened along southwest philadelphia. a police suv here lost control and hit a tree. the driver who was an officer and another officer sitting in the front seat are both hurt. new details at this hour into another crash that left two people dead in montgomery county. prosecutors are deciding whether the driver's actions were criminal. that after a car flipped into the schuylkill canal around 11:30 last night. the driver managed to get out of the car and so did one passenger, but investigators say two others drowned in the crash. organizers of penn state's campaign called fun are suspending activities coming up this weekend. 19-year-old sepot was killed last week on the pennsylvania turnpike. she and six other students were returning from a previous event and this weekend students were supposed to participate in a canning event where donations are collected in coffee cans. the events raise money to support families impacted by

this is nbc 10 news. >> a new name for herself with a new generation in philadelphia. less than an hour ago monica lewinsky spoke at the forbes 30 under 30 summit at the pennsylvania convention center. nbc 10's lauren mayk is live in our digital operations center with why lewinsky is speaking out now. >> monica lewinsky has gone from being someone all over the news for her relationship with president bill clinton to being very private, to now welcoming the spotlight to talk about bullying. she spoke today at the philadelphia convention center. this is the second time she's appeared at this forbes conference. last year she made her first big public speech here and since then she's also spoken at the ted conference, focusing on the issue of bullying. this crowd here today is filled with young adults who were maybe just in elementary school when she first hit the news as a

white house intern. today she talked about what it's been like to become a public personality again in a different way. >> most of my friends have kids, and i'm close with all of my friends' kids and i think i have gotten to a place where i start to think about, well, what was going to happen when these kids got to that place in history class, and how was i going to handle that and what was going to happen, so this idea that they were now watching the ted talk in class felt like an incredible pivot for me. for which i was grateful. >> she was much less nervous today than last year, but she did feel some of those flashbacks of those emotions. live in the digital operations center, i'm lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. a guilty plea this evening for two philadelphia men charged in a prepaid debit card scam. the two admitted their roles in a $5.8 million scheme. they threatened victims over the

phone to have them put money on cards and use them to buy money orders. this went on from september of 2013 to march of last year. the two men face up to 20 years in prison when they are sentenced coming up in january. a low wage crisis in pennsylvania. dozens of local fast food, child care, and airport workers are meeting right now and their goal is to call on companies and local lawmakers to raise the state's minimum wage to $15 an hour. temple university is hosting the first public hearing. workers are testifying now about how lower wages are holding back their communities. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> beautiful day today. tomorrow will be very similar to today, and we're still going to have those cool nights when you wake up in the morning, you're probably going to need a light jacket again. temperatures are warmer today than yesterday. tomorrow will be much of the same, then we have a rain chance coming before the weekend gets here, that's mostly friday.

don't forget your umbrella by the end of the week and that rain is going to lead us to another cool down as we go into the weekend, so here's a live look at the link, looks good right now, but come sunday for the eagles, it's going to be about ten degrees cooler than it is right now. right now we are 74 degrees, but we're nine degrees warmer than yesterday at this time, so little bit of a warmup in the forecast, going to stay that way tomorrow, too. we are dropping to 70 degrees through the lehigh valley, 71 in wilmington, glassboro, millville, 73 in dover, 65, though, in atlantic city. cooler ocean breeze moving in. right now we are nice and dry, but we have clouds moving in from the west so you might notice the increase of clouds this evening, but it's not going to come with rain. if you look off to the west, we do have the clouds, but don't have the rain. the clouds will be here overnight tonight, but that's going to keep temperatures still cool, not as cool as last night. now looking at the southeast, historic flooding, in some cases still in place, but the rain that caused it has moved away. that's great news for the

southeast, especially for south carolina. our weather is going to be staying nice until we get to about friday. here's a look at future weather. overnight you see the clouds, still going to be cool by tomorrow morning through tomorrow afternoon. a lot of these clouds will be moving out, more sunshine again. then we'll have this cold front dropping in from the north. we call that a back door cold front, so by thursday you'll notice it will be cooler than what we'll see tomorrow, temperatures dropping to around 7 o for the high. then friday a cold front approaches, a separate one, triggering some showers. so for friday you want to grab the umbrella before you leave and once the rain leaves into the weekend, cooler again, in the 60s for daytime highs. tonight, though, still in the 50s, lows will be bottoming out through the lehigh valley, upper 50s philadelphia, about the mid 50s for south jersey and delaware. tomorrow afternoon, though, still about the mid 70s, couple degrees warmer in some spots than today. mid 70s, 77 for chester tomorrow. 78 wilmington. 76 degrees glassboro, 77
