begin with sheena parveen for a look at the radar. sheena? >> yeah, it's been a very busy afternoon. we had a tornado warning, severe thunderstorm warnings, and right now this line of storms moving into new jersey and delds, mostly newcastle county, so we'll start there, indications of small hail possibly in salem county and that's still going to be possibly through the rest of the evening. heavy rain here shown by the red, this is all moving mostly to the east and southeast around 35 to 45 miles an hour, so bridgeton you can expect by 6:13, vineland 6:18, millville by 6:22. now around the philadelphia area, some of the heaviest rain has moved across the river, into new jersey, moving across the expressway, but also still across the i-95 corridor. ashland, easton townships, and that's continuing to make its way mostly to the east, as well, moving around 35 to 45 miles an hour. winslow township you can expect it by 6:14, hammenton by 6:19.

this stretches towards trenton, so we're still seeing a line of storms stretching along the major interstates here. not a great time of day, obviously, seeing heavy rain with so much traffic on the roads, but it is the heavy rain we're concerned about. that is some pretty heavy rainfall creating ponding water on the roadways. you want to take it slower this evening, the heavy rain is continuing to move in from the north and west, still some heavy rain, upper montgomery, chester county, as well, and we're going to see this moving towards the shore through the next couple hours in parts of delaware. all the pink shaded counties that you see, that's a severe thunderstorm watch until 8:00 tonight. there's still the chance for some of the storms to get strong enough to produce winds near 60 miles an hour, lightning, heavy rain, and potentially small hail. that's something we'll be tracking through the rest of the evening, but the big question, will it be clearing up for your friday night plans? brittney? >> we still have a few more hours, so we're not in the clear just yet.

let's show you our future weather path and we are concerned with the next couple of hours here as we go through at least 8:00 p.m., that's when the severe thunderstorm watch expires, and we have at least until 9:00 p.m. until we expect the radar to be all the way clear for our area. let's take you through 6:00 p.m., like sheena mentioned, most of the rainfall is right now to the south of philadelphia, pushing into wilmington, just to the south of trenton, and the next hour or so you'll notice most of these thunderstorms will head into south jersey, so just to the south of vineland, central and southern parts of burlington county. by 8:00 p.m. we're tracking this activity along the shoreline near atlantic city, cape may, also parts of lewes and sussex county. most of the moisture offshore and more clearing, so really is that organized line of thunderstorms that we're most concerned with. really within the next hour or two, even philadelphia will start to dry out. we'll see mostly cloudy skies and eventually the clouds will go away and we'll see lots of

of nbc10.com or use our mobile app. other news now, prosecutors continue to lay out their case against the contractor involved in the building collapse in center city, philadelphia. prosecutors seem to be getting close to wrapping up their case against griffin campbell. he's charged with third-degree murder and reckless endangerment for the collapse of a thrift store in june of 2013 that killed six people and injured 13 others. jacqueline london joining us live from the studio with details about the courtroom today. >> engineering experts testified today in the case and said demolition didn't follow basic rules of the industry, such as pairing the building down from the top down. the decision to use a mechanical demolition instead of a manual process likely factored into the collapse and he believes the general contractor, griffin campbell, made that decision. machine operator sean benschop

pleaded guilty for his role in the collapse. benschop testified for the prosecution this week and so did the woman trapped for 13 hours before rescuers pulled her from the rubble. this is video of that rescue of then-61 year old. she lost the entire lower half of her body because of the collapse and she told us she was convinced she would not survive. six other victims died in the rubble. the prosecution is expected to start wrapping up their case soon. stay with nbc 10 for continuing coverage. jacqueline london, nbc 10 news. october is domestic violence month and those who run agencies to help families in need say they are finding themselves living in fear they are worried their doors could soon close because of the budget battle in harrisburg. it's been more than 100 days now without a state budget and programs that rely on state funding are not getting any cash. nbc 10's deanna durante explains how that means people in need are being turned away.

>> inside, 17,000 philadelphians seek assistance with social service programs. >> we can't go on indefinitely. >> but with no state budget, there are no state funds coming in. cynthia has taken a 50% pay cut, ma on her staff have taken a 40% cut in salary. jobs have been slashed and those who make very little already have been furloughed. >> we've had to reduce the total number of kids that we provide after school service care to. >> reporter: it was hard deciding which kids were cut, but more than 300 are left with no program so they can fund others. when it comes to parenting classes, they've been stopped and now foster kids, she says, will stay in foster care longer. state lawmakers need to get a budget done soon and she's not alone. the women's shelter thrift shop is open because it needs the cash. >> there are people that are calling, that are saying i need help and you are saying you can't help them. >> we can help you with court accompaniment, counseling, support groups, because we have

volunteers who are giving their time, giving up whatever money they can give to keep us open, but that person who needs to stay at a hotel, needs gas money to get to court, needs child care, all the things we would help them, we can't help them with that right now. it's heart breaking. i have seen victims going back to their abuser because that's the only choice right now. i just can't imagine a system that thinks that's okay to do. >> some lawmakers are working on bills to release funds to state domestic violence programs but some say it's just a band-aid. in montgomery county, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. dozens of veterans, advocates, and members of the philadelphia community rallied in center city to end veteran homelessness today. they are calling it a rally for zero after a short program at love park, the group marched on broad street to help raid awareness for the initiative. new at 6:00, a new cancer fighting facility will soon operate at the philadelphia navy yard and create 110 new jobs in the city. today the mayor's office

announced british life sciences company adapt immune will locate its u.s. headquarters at the navy yard. a 47,000 square foot facility will be built to support the clinical development of therapies for cancer. city officials say this move shows philadelphia's reputation as a leading place for technology and innovation. roman catholics seem to like the pope a little bit less since his visit to philadelphia, according to a new poll from pew research center. the pope's favorability rating increased from non-catholics, but among catholics, his rating fell from 86% to 81%. that poll was taken two days after the pope left philadelphia to head home to rome. up next on nbc 10 news at 6:00, some scared new jersey parents are begging drivers stop speeding through their neighborhoods. we'll show you what's causing the problem. and we still have a lot of heavy rain and thunderstorms moving through. the timing on those for the rest

their streets because of an indefinite detour. cydney long explains why. >> the closure of breakneck road is causing headaches and concern for people who live on the only detour route here where the posted speed limit along this road is 25 miles per hour. >> this road, it's like a back country road. >> where today we found children playing, right after being dropped off by their bus. >> slow down. >> a community that enjoys a turtle safe pace has now been interrupted. >> we'll stand out here with him when they see the kids, they go by just as fast. >> lisa and frank and dozens of others have sounded off on facebook begging drivers to hit the brakes before they hurt someone. >> if it turns my head, it's you can hear it. >> kids running around, riding on their bikes, you don't have to worry about cars, now you do. it's very dangerous out here.

>> all because of dam repairs being made in the region. the breakneck road detour could rain or winter snow only making matters worse. even the school children have meantime, police have placed what they call a drone car or unmanned cruiser to serve as a deterrent. >> it works for about three seconds, then they realize nobody's in there. what they really need to do, put an empty car there for a day or two, then have a real car there with somebody in it. >> police are doing that, as well, and plan to use message boards. their ticket and traffic stop volume has increased since the detour began last week. >> they can catch everybody all at once, it's a big township. >> residents tell me the car volume is especially bad during the morning and afternoon rush and some of them plan to push for temporary speed bumps if this problem persists. from medford, cydney long, nbc 10 news.

back to our weather now. we want to let you know the storms rolling through our area right now are causing problems at the airport. there's a 45-minute delay right now for arriving flights at philadelphia international. we're also getting a lot of pictures coming into the nbc 10 newsroom of how the storms look in your area. let's go to brittney shipp for a look at some of the best ones. brittney? >> lots of storm reports coming in, also videos. this is one of the best ones. take a look at that cloud to ground lightning right over the pennsylvania turnpike. interstate 476 will take you out right now, this one is closer to king of prussia, we found this one on twitter. you can see it's a time lapsed video, the clouds and the sky really dark and gray and then you can see the trees moving. we did see wind gusts reported up to 55, 56 miles per hour, also we saw a few -- well, this viewer said the tornado outside of the mall. we do not have confirmation of

tornados, but we definitely were under a tornado warning for quite amount of time from 4:45 at least until 5:20 this evening, but no confirmed tornados as of right now. also you can see this one was sent in on instagram, very windy outside right now. this is near conshohocken, so this is just a few of the videos and pictures we're tracking that continue to come into our newsroom. right now we want to check in with first alert meteorologist sheena parveen for a closer look on our weather situation. sheena. >> yeah, we've had an active afternoon, brittney, still have the storms moving into new jersey and delaware still heavy rain here and still the potential for some small hail, lightning, and potential some damaging winds. we're looking in parts of newcastle and salem county, salem, delaware city, these areas all seeing heavy rain. this cluster of storms mostly moving southeast around 35 to 45 miles an hour.

vineland, 6:27, millville 6:34, laurel lake 6:40. closer to the philadelphia area, more like glassboro, these are areas that are now seeing the heavy rain that hasn't been seeing it this afternoon. so this line of storms was earlier in the philadelphia area, but now in new jersey and this is the direction we expect it to continue, so winslow township 6:19, hammonton 6:24. mullica township by 6:33. lighter rain near pemberton, but country lake estates now seeing the heavy rain in burlington county and all this heavy rain will continue making its way to the shore and i think a lot of this is going to hold together, so our shore communities you can expect this in the next couple hours and some of this will still be heavy by the time it moves in. here is a large look at the picture of the radar stretching

from newcastle county through new jersey, up through ocean county, up towards new york city now and where we're seeing the severe thunderstorm watch is mostly confined to new jersey. that's where thunderstorm watch has been cancelled for pennsylvania, but still goes to 8:00 for new jersey, potential for severe storms with heavy rain and possibly damaging winds. the reason why we have the rain is because a cold front's moving through, triggering the thunderstorms. look at the cool air off to our west, 50-degree temperatures there will be dropping into the 50s overnight, maybe the upper 40s for some. right now our temperatures a lot cooler than they were this afternoon. mid 60s through the lehigh vall valley, philadelphia still the 70s in new jersey and delaware, but these temperatures will be dropping for the weekend. 7:00 p.m. line of rain moves towards the jersey shore. delaware beaches by 9:00 p.m., then we start to see it clearing out closer to 10:00, 11:00 tonight. temperatures dropping overnight. by tomorrow morning, some areas will be in the 40s to start by the afternoon tomorrow, only

around 60 degrees by 12:00 p.m., and only about the mid 60s by the afternoon hours, topping out. sunny skies for the eagles game. temperatures by tailgating time if you're out there, upper 50s. fourth quarter mid 60s. tonight, though, showers and storms late tonight for most of the area, mid 50s philadelphia, upper 40s north and west. noticeably cooler overnight, especially tomorrow with temperatures in the mid 60s. big changes for tomorrow. sunny skies in the 60s, but we warm up into the 70s into next week. i'm danny pommells from comcast sportsnet. coming up, more good news from the eagles injury front, plus chip kelly talks about facing drew brees. that's coming up next.

sheena, not finished with the storms yet. >> no, we're not finished with the storms. rain around right now, pretty heavy and moving through new jersey, also delaware. so for the areas that haven't seen the rain yet today, you're starting to see it and it is coming down pretty hard, especially across the expressway approaching atlantic county, so it is still raining in the philadelphia area, but you see the clearing north and west through the lehigh valley. that's going to continue moving in as we go overnight. so this line of showers and storms approaching the shore, i would say within the next hour or two, and then we'll see it all clearing out by about 10:00, 11:00 tonight. in the meantime, take your umbrella with you. temperatures are getting cooler, too. so if you are heading out tonight, i would say maybe the umbrella for the next couple of hours, but then with the cool temperatures you're going to want the jacket and the jacket through the weekend because we're going to see sunshine developing with temperatures in the mid 60s for both saturday and sunday. so nice changes from today, but we do have those wet roads out there. >> yeah, we do. hope things settle down soon. thanks, sheena. for all of us here at nbc 10,
