today. the nbc chief correspondent richard engel is in istanbul. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this was an absolutely an troesh yus event. students and peace activists gathering in ankara this morning to gather for the peace demonstration. a low level conflict going on with the turkish government. these people were coming to say that fighting needs to end. the country needs to pull together and as the crowds were growing, witnesses say two explosions went off. one can be seen while people dancing in the foreground. more than 100 injured were carried away on the peace banners they were bringing to the rally. so far, there has been no immediate claim of responsibility. this attack bears all the

hallmarks of an isis-style attack. the opposition parties and many people at the rally do not support the government. say that the timing is very suspicious. in three weeks, there will be important elections in the country and opposition parties accuse the government of not doing enough to protect them. craig. >> richard engel for us in turkey. thank you. there are new details this morning about the shooting in oregon last week. for the first time we are hearing what happened in the classroom when the gunman walked in and opened fire. details coming to us known as the man as "the lucky one." sheinelle. >> good morning. while we had a general idea of what transpired, this is the first chance to learn how horrifying those last moments were for the victims and survivors. this morning, the most detailed account of what really happened in the classroom where christopher harper mercer killed eight students and a teacher

before turning the gun on himself. 18-year-old survivor matthew downing releasing a statement saying he was chosen to be quote the lucky one who would tell the story of what happened. downing writes, quote, it was about 30 or 40 minutes into the class when i heard a couple of shots fired when he walked in. the first thought in my head was that this couldn't be real. downing says the shooter told everyone to get into the center of the room and be quiet. then, says downing, he looked directly at me and said, kid with the glasses, you are the lucky one. i will not shoot you if you give this to the cops. i sit up and he pointed a gun at me. i thought this is the moment i would die. harper spares downing. he asked student after student if they were religious and shot them in cold blood. according to downing, after harper mercer was shot by the police officer outside, he lay down on the ground and shot himself in the head. downing's statement released the same day president obama visited

with the survivors as well as family members of the victims. >> we will have to come together as a country to see how we can prevent this issues from taking place. but today is about the families and their grief and the love we feel for them. >> reporter: protesters lined the streets upset with his push for stronger gun control. >> he is here for a gun grabbing agenda. our town is in mourning. >> today, funerals will be held for four victims and umpqua community college will hold classes on monday. erica. sheinelle, thank you. >> turning to north korea now where the country is putting on a show of force to mark an important anniversary and north korea's leader is talking tough with the ckoconflict with the united states. nbc's bill neely is in the capital of pyongyang. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, craig.

from a rainy pyongyang where i have just seen probably the biggest parade in north korea's history. the biggest military parade. it was uncomfortable because no one does the parade like the north koreans. it is definitely the goose stepping capital of the world. this was a show of strength. this is an army that regards the united states as enemy number one. this wasn't just a display of unquestioning loyalty. this was a defiant message to america. don't mess with us. don't stop us from trying to develop the nuclear weapons that we believe is our sovereign right. there was a defiant message from the man who presided over the parade. supreme leader kim jong-un. he says our policies are driving the united states into a dilemma and corner.

i will continue to strengthen this army. a defiant messages from him. you can probably hear the troops in the background chanting because this celebration, this parade will go on here, although it is slightly raining on the parade. that is one thing the supreme leader cannot control. from pyongyang, back to you, craig. >> bill neely in north korea. thank you. the push for the house speaker continues in washington. republicans scrambling to find someone to take the job. so far, not a lot of luck. nbc's kristen welker is at the white house. good morning. >> reporter: erica, good morning. stunned members of congress trying to regroup away from washington. most of them way from the washington this weekend. the biggest name is congress member paul ryan. it is not clear ryan wants the job. with house republicans leaving town without a leader, all eyes

are now on congress member paul ryan. the consensus candidate who top republicans want to be the next speaker of the house. the 45-year-old father of three has consistently said he is not interested. content with his current position as chairman of the ways and means committee. >> what an absolute privilege and honor it is to chair this committee. >> reporter: friday, it was clear he would have a lot of support even among potential opponents. >> if paul ryan got into the race, i would support him. >> paul ryan is the right person. >> reporter: the more conservative branch is not totally on board. this all comes after kevin mccarthy stunned his colleagues and washington thursday by announcing he was dropping out. >> i think i shocked some of you. >> reporter: he dismissed rumors that a whisper campaign led to the out ster. any candidate who has committed

misdeeds should withdraw from the race. mccarthy said that had nothing to do with the decision. >> no. come on. >> reporter: the chaos comes as the house is facing a long to-do list. to pass a spending bill. a house divided, but seeming to agree on one point. >> i think people want to get it right rather than do it too fast. >> reporter: now ryan even took a call from mitt romney who urged him to run. house majority leader john boehner says he will stay on until an election for replacement. erica. >> everybody is putting on full-court press. even people not in washington. paul ryan says he is focused on the packers this weekend. when can we expect a decision? >> reporter: the house is on break for ten days. ryan will use that time to discuss the decision with his family and friends. he is hoping his colleagues use the time to decide if they are

ready to rally. by all accounts, the congress wants this resolved when they get back from break and as they work on issues like keeping the government funded. >> an important issue. speaking of other decisions, everybody awaiting a decision from vice president joe biden. any word there? >> reporter: well, not yet. look, vice president biden, according to sources, is home this weekend with his family. i'm told he will hold a meeting with them to decide or try to decide if he actually wants to get into this race. he knows the clock is ticking and he really only has the next week or so to decide whether he wants to get in and if he wants to mount a credible campaign. he has a big catch up job. bernie sanders and hillary clinton raised a lot of money. he has to catch up in an organizing game on the ground. we don't expect him to participate in the tuesday debate. the final decision is expected within days. >> we'll be watching.
