she was approached by four men who punched and kicked her. jenkins, a transgender woman put up a fight and was shot two times in the back. >> our investigation, this is not a hate crime at all. it's a sad and senseless murder, but it is not a hate crime. it had nothing to do with the individual being a transgender. the victim was, in fact, a prostitute. >> pedro reading was arrested sunday after following up on a tip that identified the 24-year-old as a known robber who lives in the area. he has prior violent arrests. reading is cooperating with detectives who are looking for three more suspects. meanwhile, the lgbt community continues to make sure jenkins is remembered for who she was and not what she did. >> a human being and their life is not less, they do not deserve to be beaten down, gunned down, and executed in our streets. >> police believe the other

barely any clouds around at all, no rain, we have to go far off to the west to see cloud cover, even some showers around. this is part of a cold front around chicago, but this is what's going to get closer tomorrow and increasing our rain chances. grab the umbrella before you leave, i think we'll see some spotty showers through part of the day for your tuesday, so that's going to be dropping temperatures once that clears. right now, though, we are in the 70s for most of the area, if not everybody. the poconos are at 70 degrees, 76 at philadelphia, 73 wilmington, mid 70s through the lehigh valley. as we go through this evening, expect clear skies by 6:00 p.m. temperatures in the low 70s, by 8:00 mid 60s. getting cooler, but the clouds get with us through the overnight hours, keeping temperatures maybe not as cool, then we'll see a bigger cool down as we go through this week. coming up, the timing on the rains tomorrow. >> can you picture this, state police actually rounding up senators and forcing them back to trenton?

>> that's exactly what the new jersey senate president says he'll do. >> cydney long is joining us live from gloucester county. >> it's all related to a vote on guns. >> reporter: that's right, it has to do with gun laws and mental health issues coincide, so a controversial issue and one that senate president steve sweeney, who is a democrat, is willing to enlist new jersey state police to make sure republican lawmakers are accountable to this vote. we're talking to both gun sellers and buyers today, the fact that sweeney is willing to enlist them to make sure they show up to the chamber. it has to do with firing gun buyers who make their mental health histories go away, newly drafted legislation that was initially voted on unanimously by both parties, since vetoed by christie, it would require local and state police are notified if these individuals apply for a gun. sweeney said today he will, quote, go get state police,

rather, will get any lawmaker that skips this important override vote scheduled ten days from now. bob biden, a glassboro gun owner says there's too many what ifs and delays with the already complex gun legislation right now, but does agree all lawmakers should be present for the next scheduled vote voluntarily or otherwise. >> i think it's very important we don't sell guns to people that have mental health problems, but i personally don't know how to handle that. some of the laws that go through, i don't want to see a person who is not entitled to own a gun blocked from owning one because of something that >> reporter: in governor's veto, he asked sweeping legislation to new jersey's mental health system and getting help for those who need it the most, any loopholes that potentially put guns in the hands of the wrong people leading to those mass

shootings that we've seen around the nation. live in glassboro, cydney long, nbc 10 news. the archdiocese of philadelphia is trying to capitalize on the pope's visit. it launched a new initiative to encourage vocations, it's called "called by name," and it was to use the momentum that started this year when the number of new philadelphia seminaries increased threefold, inviting parishioners to select priesthood. the weekends of november 1st and november 8th and a new film called "heed the call" will be released to encourage young men to consider the priesthood. speaking of the recent papal visit, we learned nbc 10's coverage of the pope's visit to philadelphia will be stored in the vatican archives. southwest airlines says it has fixed the technology problems that delayed hundreds of flights yesterday and operations are running more smoothly.

right now a spokesperson for the airline says there's no indication hackers are to blame. southwest warned passengers early this morning to print boarding passes ahead of time and arrive at the airport two hours early. that's no longer necessary. yesterday southwest suffered intermittent technical issues on its website, mobile apps, phone centers, and airport check-in systems. a credit card machine created a scare in the air this morning. a flight from newark to seattle had to make an emergency landing in buffalo. the credit card reader caught fire. the flight crew put out the fire with an extinguisher, the plane landed and no one was hurt. fly eagles, fly, it is victory monday, thankfully, as the eagles improve to 2-3. the offense exploded in this game after they were inspired by a teammate's pregame speech. >> it was a win they needed. john clark is joining us now. who spoke up, john, and what was

chip kelly's reaction today? >> it was sam bradford. he was the one who organized the meeting and this is what you want to see out of your quarterback. some of the eagles said sam doesn't talk much, he's not loud, so when he does speak, you do listen. sam got the offense together in the shower area of the locker room before they were going out on to the field. they were all in uniform in the shower, the shower area is just a place you can have privacy. sam told his offensive teammates we have the talent here, let's just go out and show it. let's relax and do what we do. the offensive players say it was good to hear their quarterback speak up. the birds went out and had their best game of the season. 39 points, over 500 yards of offense. here's coach chip kelly today about sam's speech. >> obviously, the guys that speak have to be able to back it up, so you can be -- sometimes they say the empty barrel makes the most noise, a lot of guys talk all the time and don't perform. it's more of kind of matching up, but i know our players

debate. jim kenney won the democratic primary, melissa murray-bailey, hosted by our partners, whyy. collection day is around the corner. the next mayor will be voted into office on november 3rd. and there's another debate scheduled tomorrow, this one for the democrats running for president. they'll square off for the first time in las vegas. front-runner hillary clinton will be joined by candidate bernie sanders, martin o'malley, jim webb, and lincoln chafee. the big question remains, will vice president joe biden enter the race. the past weekend may have been a tipping point for decisions. delaware bureau reporter tim furlong reports. >> reporter: joe biden spent the weekend in delaware watching his grandkids' sporting events, outside his house, waiting to hear whether he's running for president. isn't sure americans care as much as the media does. >> i don't know there are that

many people hanging by a thread to find out what joe biden is going to do. >> reporter: the delaware politician in wilmington surely want to know what joe biden will do, as do hillary clinton supporters, as does kyle, he heads up blue hens for bernie, a university of delaware group that supports bernie sanders. >> i think we're happy to have biden in the race. i think with biden the race becomes less of a conflict of personalities and more about the issues. that's how we win, bernie is strong on the issues. >> reporter: a poll shows biden in the race would significantly cut into hillary clinton's lead over sanders, giving the admitted democratic socialist from vermont more traction, again, it all hinges on a decision from the vice president. all anyone can do now is speculate. >> i've been saying a very long time i don't think it's in his own best interests to run for president. i don't know what a bruising presidential campaign would do for joe biden at this point. i'm not a betting point. if you forced me, i would say i don't think he'll be in the race a month from now.

>> reporter: the vice president is expected back in washington tomorrow, we'll let you know if and when he announces a decision. tim furlong, nbc 10 news. donald trump faced questions today in new hampshire. he was one of eight candidates from both parties involved in a day-long convention hosted by no labels. trump took questions after his speech and weighed in on tomorrow night's democratic debate. >> well, i think it's not going to be very well rated because trump isn't in the debate. i think it's not going to be highly rated. i think it's going to be you're going to watch ten or 15 minutes, people are going to get bored and turn it off. >> tomorrow night's democratic debate is the first of six scheduled. dnc officials say more could be added. republican lawmakers believe in pennsylvania internet gambling may be a solution to the state's budget crisis. they want to expand options instead of raising taxes. governor tom wolf says he's open

for the idea. internet gambling is only legal in new jersey, delaware, and nevada. a big blow to camden's vision for new homes and schools to tell you about. camden did not win a $30 million grant from the u.s. department of housing and urban development. camd camden's mayor toured in august, they talked about their plans to use the money to revitalize neighborhoods. now to a developing story. >> it appears former phillies star chase utley will play tonight despite his suspension for his slide in saturday night's game. nbc 10's keith jones is following this controversial play. keith? >> chase utley was, of course, a fan favorite in philly for a decade, now he's wearing dodger blue and will play tonight against the mets. on saturday he broke mets' player leg right there as he was sliding into second base. major league baseball suspended utley for two games, but he filed an appeal. the league won't hear it until after the game so he's able to

play. it created a firestorm on social media, was it a dirty play. utley apologized to tejada after the play, governor chris christie called utley a dog. here's what new york city's mayor had to say. >> he can appeal all he wants, but he's guilty as sin. that is a tackle. i think the people of new york city will let him know how he feels. it's unbelievable. he deserves what boos he gets. >> your take is coming up at 5:00. keith jones, nbc 10 news. >> we'll look forward to that, keith. say good-bye to the term redskins in california. california became the first state to ban public schools from using redskins as a team name or mascot. governor jerry brown signed the law yesterday. it impacts four schools out there. state lawmakers debated for more than a decade before finally passing this year. >> students in bucks county filed the school board in the student newspaper after months of debate the board approved the

policy giving administrators the power to force editors to print the name of the mascot, only in letters to the editor and editorials, not in stories. the community gathered to welcome them back and college and state officials promised help for those affected. nbc's jay gray takes a closer look. >> reporter: hearing a message of strength and hope, hundreds lined the road back to umpqua community college this morning. >> this is our community and it doesn't happen here. it's not supposed to. >> reporter: 11 days ago it did happen here. >> active shooter at ucc. >> reporter: when a former student burst into a classroom and opened fire. nine people were killed, nine more injured before police moved in, he turned the gun on himself. >> very sad event, and we need to move on now, i think.

>> reporter: for students, moving on means coming back. as the campus opened for the first time since the massacre, there was a stepped up police presence, along with counselors and volunteers. >> there's still a lot of healing that needs to happen. the students that i met and talked to need a lot of support and they need a lot of love. >> reporter: college administrators say they'll do whatever they can to help their town and these students. >> this is a very strong and resilient community, and they will provide the support that these students need to move forward and begin the healing process. >> reporter: support so many will need during what will be a long and very difficult road back. jay gray, nbc news. >> we are waiting for the results of the autopsy to see exactly how a man died in a

clothing bin. someone found a man's body dangling from the bin yesterday afternoon in burlington county. police do not suspect foul play. federal judges refusing to allow three delaware students to attend classes in red clay school district. the students were eligible until their mother lost her job and were forced to move outside the district. the american civil liberties union say the children should be allowed to attend. cheney university in delaware county is dealing with its steepest enrollment drop in years. the school has 711 students enrolled in school this fall. they lost 50% of its enrollment in the last five years. the university was founded in 1837 and is the oldest historically black institution of higher learning in the country. some of the families affected by this massive explosion at a texas fertilizer plant two years ago have reached a settlement with the company.

the explosion killed 15 people and injured hundreds of others. most of the victims were first responders who arrived to fight a fire at the facility. no information about the settlement has been released. interstate 95 is back open in south carolina more than a week after a 16-mile stretch was closed because of flooding. the interstate had been closed as workers repaired bridges damaged in the flood. the governor says response teams are still worki ingworking. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> well, we have beautiful weather still today, temperatures a little bit warmer than yesterday, too. we're in the mid 70s and really not a cloud in the sky, but tomorrow that will change. we'll have more clouds moving in overnight tonight, then some showers through the day tomorrow. not a rain out, but we will see periods of rain throughout the day. another cool down coming once the rain leaves, so that's going to be part of a cold front. cooler as we end out the week

and even colder weekend. we're talking about morning lows come sunday morning, possibly in the 30s for much of the area. i know, i can probably hear the moans right now, but nice and sunny in the mean time, so you can enjoy this weather, 76 degrees, sunny skies outside, humidity low and comfortable. mid 70s through the lehigh valley, 72 westchester, 73 degrees in wilmington, 70 degrees for much of south jersey and delaware, like dover, millville coming in at 70 degrees. these temperatures will be dropping come wednesday. tomorrow we'll still be in the 70s but you'll notice the change wednesday, it will stay cool as we end out the week. nice and dry until you get to the west, that's where we have the cold front. this is where we bring in clouds and showers for tomorrow, so once this moves through tomorrow, this is what's going to cool our temperatures down wednesday. here's a look at future weather, future precip and temperatures, so tonight we still drop down into the 50s, just maybe not as cool as last night in some areas.

tomorrow morning 10:00 we'll start to see at least some showers move in, so i think for the later part of the morning commute, some rain north and west of philadelphia. i don't think it will be for everyone, though. throughout the middle of the day, around lunchtime, by about noon to 1:00 p.m., we could see scattered showers, temperatures about the mid to low 70s and we could see another round of scattered showers tomorrow during the evening commute. not for everyone, but these will be moving by pretty quickly. then we clear out later tomorrow night and come wednesday our temperatures only topping out in about the mid to upper 60s and we'll see more clouds moving in, but no rain expected about tuesday. even bigger cool down as we go into the weekend. here's another look at future temperatures. this is for wednesday, the cool air moves in behind the cold front. we stay cool wednesday, thursday, and friday, then look at this big area of cold air, that's going to come down just in time for the weekend. high temperatures may not get out of the 50s for some areas saturday and sunday, and we could be waking up to morning lows in the 30s come sunday

morning. going to be quite a bit colder. might have to break out the thicker jackets this weekend. tonight around 50 through the lehigh valley. 57 philadelphia, mid 50s for parts of new jersey and delaware with our clouds increasing. tomorrow we'll see mostly cloudy skies, scattered showers around, 72 to 75 degrees. fairly mild through the afternoon, but the rain will be with us through part of the area. by wednesday, cooler, breezy, temperatures topping out around 67 degrees, then we go into thursday and friday, mid 60s to end out the weekend. there you see it saturday and sunday, 50s in some locations, sunday morning low temperatures, 39 degrees around the philadelphia area, but some areas through the lehigh valley could get close to freezing as we go into sunday morning. the cost for cheap gas isn't making everyone happy. how prices at the pump are going to impact your benefits. stabbed with a corkscrew inside a college dorm. what sparked the fight between two local football players that now has one in critical

the president of olive garden restaurant chain is personally apologized to a kansas city police officer after the officer was asked to leave a restaurant because he was carrying his service weapon. the officer who says he was in full uniform at the time was stunned and thought it was a joke, but the employee asked him to leave. the officer went to the restaurant to celebrate his birthday with his family. on the restaurant's twitter page, the chain called the incident a misunderstanding. an olympic hopeful from our area is in the running to be named sports illustrated sports kid of the year. >> you can help get him there. reese whitley is an accomplished swimmer and sophomore in high school. reese has qualified to swim the 100 and 200 meter breaststroke races this june.

this is nbc 10 news. >> right now at 4:30, a local football player fighting for his life. >> his teammate faces serious charges. >> the students played on albright college's football team in reading. doug shimell talked to classmates about the fight that almost turned deadly. >> reporter: police said the bad blood carried over from the football field to crowell dorm at albright college early sunday morning. >> kind of jarring. >> reporter: investigators say a long running dispute brought freshman football player marquis stewart to a dorm room where he allegedly attacked teammate dameer madison. >> the aggressor brought in a knife, or an ice pick, and stabbed the other individual

three times. just not the type of violence that we need on our college campuses. >> reporter: madison was hospitalized, stewart is in jail, and text alerts went out all over campus. >> i feel really bad, because they are off the team i heard and stuff, so it's shocking that they are this young and whole life is ruined basically. >> i hung out with them a lot. >> reporter: freshman class president says stewart had been antagonized to the breaking point. >> not that type of person. like, it's really crazy how they pushed him to that point. he's not like that. if you know him, he's really not like that. >> reporter: school officials say marquis stewart has been suspended and is being charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. in reading, i'm doug shimell, nbc 10 news. two delaware teenagers are in hot water accused of shooting kids with a bb gun. police in middletown, delaware, tell us two boys drove by a group of kids saturday night and opened fire.

one was hit in the head and suffered a small cut. officers spotted the vehicle and spotted an air soft gun inside and arrested the two teenagers on assault charges. now to breaking news, sky force 10 is live in delaware. a deadly crash between a motorcycle and a farm tractor on route 10 in townsend. we know that one person has died from this crash. the other suffered burns and is in the hospital. this crash happened about an hour ago. taylors bridge road is closed. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> first alert meteorologist sheena parveen is here now with our nbc 10 first alert forecast. >> sheena, you're tracking rain in the forecast, right? >> yeah, showers around, so it's going to look different tomorrow than it looks today. today absolutely gorgeous, a perfect day, temperatures in the 70s, low humidity, and really not one cloud in the sky. this is a live look across philadelphia right near the schuylkill river and we have

just seen such beautiful clear conditions all day today. it's going to last like this as we go through your evening, but overnight we'll start to see the clouds increasing. right now we are nice and dry. the closest cloud cover is well back off to our west with some rain, too. this is all part of a cold front. this will be getting closer through the overnight hours, then tomorrow we could see scattered showers around. it's not going to be something that will be lasting all day, but we'll see scattered showers through part of your day. i would say keep the umbrella handy. temperatures still in the 70s tomorrow like they are right now, mid 70s for philadelphia, wilmington, northeast philly, even the lehigh valley. closer to the shore around the upper 60s in wildwood, 70 degrees in atlantic city, still seeing sunny skies. towards 6:00 tonight, philadelphia poconos and along the shore temperatures in about the mid 60s to low 70s, sunny skies and closer to 10:00 more clouds moving in. poconos about the mid 50s by 10:00 p.m., philadelphia area around 63 degrees. coming up, i'll show you the

timing of the rain for tomorrow, who can expect it and a bigger cool down coming for your weekend. a new jersey woman died in a freak accident the day after celebrating her 61st wedding anniversary. a pile of rocks came tumbling down on the road saturday night in lower mustn't bethel township. ann rogers' husband tried to swerve to avoid the rocks but hit a truck. she died and her husband is now in the hospital. traffic trouble for drivers in bucks county this week. we know that several projects started today, including resurfacing lower state road between county line road in warrenton. you'll see road crews all week, expect delays in that area. for the third time in 40 years, millions of social security recipients, disabled veterans, and federal retirees can expect no increase in benefits next year and gas prices are partly to blame for this. the annual cost of living adjustment is based on a government measure of inflation, which is being dragged down by the lower prices at the pump.

we continue to see those low prices across the area. drivers in every state are paying less than $3 a gallon for the first time since 2009. in the five-county philadelphia area, drivers are paying an average of $2.32. prices slightly lower in delaware at $2.21. cheapest place to fill up is in south jersey where the average is $1.93 a dplgallon. facebook plans to take another step into e commerce. they'll begin testing a shop section in the next few weeks. the feature is designed to be a place for people to more easily discover, share, and purchase products. in the post the company says it is responding to consumer demands. a local professor takes home a nobel prize. plus, a feud escalates between teammates. the football fight that turned into attempted murder charges. an organization dedicated to saving stranded sea creatures at

weekend is the big cooldown. we are tracking showers, today perfect sunshine, mid 70s for most of the area, but tomorrow we're going to see some changes. still in the 70s, though. then we have a cool down coming wednesday, so we are going to drop back into the 60s to end out the week, but into the weekend we're talking about temperatures possibly not even out of the 50s and sunday morning many areas could be in the 30s. i'll show you that in the seven day in just a second. here's a look at the poconos, not one cloud in the sky. it's been gorgeous across the entire area all day today. and here's what's really been going on with our temperatures, the average high now 68 degrees, yesterday we got to 70. today so far 76, tomorrow still in the mid 70s with scattered showers around, then we cool back down into the 60s for wednesday, right around 67 degrees. that's going to be a cold front moving through, triggering showers tomorrow, then we'll see the cool down for the rest of the week after tomorrow. right now in the mid 70s, philadelphia 76 degrees, 75

trenton, 73 wilmington, mid 70s through the lehigh valley, 70 degrees in the poconos. 68 in wildwood along the shore. right now nice and dry on radar, clear skies lasting throughout your evening and then changes tomorrow. we'll see the clouds move in overnight tonight, all ahead of this cold front and tomorrow through the day we'll see some spotty showers. i don't think it's going to be something that will be lasting all day, but maybe grab your umbrella before you leave. here's a look at hour by hour forecast with the timing of the rain, overnight clouds increase for part of the area, then tomorrow morning i think most of the morning commute will be dry. notice more clouds in the morning hours, but we could see a couple spotty showers by the later part of the morning commute. by 5:00 p.m. tomorrow, could see some rain, by 7:00 p.m., closer to the shore, and then we clear up as we go into tuesday night. clouds return back again on

wednesday, but we expect to stay dry and temperatures will be cooling down back into the 60s for wednesday. tonight we'll see the clouds increasing, temperatures will be cool, maybe not as cool as last night. 57 around philadelphia, 55 millville, 58 degrees in wildwood. then tomorrow you'll see the clouds around, more than today, scattered showers, 72 to 75 degrees for the high temperatures, so we'll still be mild, still be in the 70s, then we start to see the drop as we go into your wednesday around 67 degrees, little breezy, too, once the cold front moves through, so cooler and breezy wednesday, thursday mid 60s, friday mid 60s. cool end to the weekend. in the weekend, another cold front saturday around 60 degrees, saturday night into sunday morning 30s, upper 30s for the philadelphia area. lehigh valley will be closer to freezing. then as we go into sunday we can only be in the upper 50s. i think there are going to be locations over the weekend that

this is nbc 10 news. >> just about a month from now stranded seals could start turning up on beaches at the jersey shore. >> the organization that often comes to the rescue, they are in dire straits right now because of unexpected repairs needed at the facility in atlantic county. jersey shore bureau reporter ted greenberg tells us the group has very little time or money to get the damage fixed. >> reporter: when bob looks at this large crack, he sees a crisis facing the marine mammals stranding center. >> it's something that has to be addressed right away. we can't let it go. >> the crack is in the concrete foundation under the center's
