this wednesday. i'm chris cato. we begin with meteorologist bill henley and his first alert forecast. a nice start to the morning. >> yes. if it was sunny that would be the headline. it's 4:00 in the morning, cool, a nice breeze blowing and the humidity has come way down, no sign of fog. pottstown down to 50, 53 in doylestown and millville. it's 59 at philadelphia international and northeast philadelphia and look at south philadelphia, 51 degrees. we'll see sunshine, after 7:00 this morning. the temperatures will start coming up as well. 58 at 6:00, 9:00, not much warmer, a westerly wind. we'll be in the middle 60s by lunch time with a few passing clouds. you won't need your umbrella today. neighborhood by neighborhood forecast when i'm back in ten minutes. jessica boyington is watching first alert traffic. >> the big thing we're dealing with so far is the vine street

expressway closure, doing repairs so in between the schuylkill expressway and broad street here that started monday, that will be out there until thursday the 15th between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. so i can give you an idea what it looks like. again, the east and westbound lanes, you can see them doing repairs, these are cameras around broad street in the beginning of part of the repairs. for the rest of the majors no real problems so far in terms of drive times. 95, the schuylkill great, no problems on the blue route and mass transit no delays so far for this morning. more to come and i have construction projects to talk about. >> is it a tragic accident or something else? police continue to investigate the death of a 3-year-old boy in camden county. and a source tells nbc 10 the death is considered suspicious. nbc 10's denise has details from haddon township where a community wants answers.

>> reporter: the discovery of brendan's body near the cooper river brought out hundreds of people who gathered to grieve in the neighborhood where he disappeared. some in the crowd also came to support and rally behind the 3-year-old's father who reported the boy missing. >> he didn't do this. we know he didn't do this. >> reporter: police have not named a suspect, whether this is a case of foul play. friends and family of the boy's father wonder why the investigation appears to focus on him. >> no one that knows him believes this is possible. >> reporter: detectives had the area blocked off while they conducted an investigation that lasted into the evening. the father's apartment on cooper street the last known place where the 3-year-old was seen alive. his grandparents dropped him off. >> devastating to hear something like that. the closer it gets to home really affects you. >> reporter: an all-out search for brendan creato ended less than three hours from when his father reported him missing.

a canine unit found his body less than a mile from his home. >> as denise reported there are hundreds of people gathered last night to grieve and remember 3-year-old brendan creato. some took part in the search for the boy yesterday. >> i woke up this morning, my kids were texting from high school and that one of their friends sons was missing and everyone needed to start looking. >> he was part of a family. he was part of many people's families. they grew up here. >> there is a go fund me page set up in brendan's name to support the family. while many people at the vigil were interested in knowing how the boy died, they agreed knowing that may not bring

closure. camden county prosecutors tell us no one has been arrested. happening today, we expect a major announcement philadelphia's mayor says he'll make what he call as major public safety announcement, he's holding a news conference at 9:30 at city hall. his office is being tight-lipped about the exact details but nbc 10 will be there and you can count on us for updates throughout tloond the nbc 10 app. the philadelphia teen who left the scene after running over a temple university student will spend at least 11 1/2 months in prison. 18-year-old rashan roberts was sentenced up to 23 months plus five years probation. roberts only had his learner's permit when his car hit rachel hall. hall was riding her bike when police say she rode through a stop sign and roberts' car hit her. she suffered serious brain damage and is still recovering at a rehab facility. roberts surrendered to police about a week after that accident.

his parents called authorities and told them that their son was driving that car. >> at 4:06 on to decision 2016. the political boxing gloves came off. the five democratic presidential candidates met in their first debate. they tried to stake out their differences on foreign policy, gun control and the economy. drew smith has a review. >> reporter: former secretary of state hillary clinton stood in the middle of the stage. many of her positions the focal point of the debate. to her e-mail scandal the candidate in second place bernie sanders came to her defense. >> the american people are sick and tired of hearing about your damn e-mail. >> me too. >> reporter: the candidates were less generous on clinton's record on iraq. >> the worst foreign policy blunder in the history of this country. >> you look at someone that made that poor decision in 2002 to go in iraq when there was no real

evidence. >> clinton said the president's decision to make her secretary of state should clear up questions about her judgment. >> he valued my judgment. >> the other issue, gun control. offering a chance for the lesser knowns to jump in. >> leading with principle. not by pandering to the nra and backing down. and i have been asked -- >> we have to respect the tradition in this country of people who want to defend themselves and their family. >> clinton and sanders also fought over whether there should be a socialist or a capitalist in the white house. >> we would be making a grave mistake to turn our backs on what built the greatest middle class in the history of the world. >> explain democratic socialism is. it is wrong today in a rigged economy that 57% of all income is going to the top 1%. >> nbc 10's drew smith reporting there. the democrats will have a total of six debates this primary season, that's much fewer than the 2008 campaign. the winner of that will accept

the party's nomination here in philadelphia. from the delaware bureau dover's legislative hall is expected to reopen one week after a fire caused extensive damage to parts of the building. a state official says cleanup is almost complete but some areas still need new carpet, new cubicles and furniture. investigators say the fire started when an exhaust pipe for a backup generator was being tested. in delaware county today crews will be back at chester upland school for the arts to try to fix a power failure that forced the school to close yesterday. classes remain suspended until the problem is resolved. the philadelphia police department is honoring 80 officers today during a merit commendation ceremony, this is video of a similar ceremony earlier this year. these officers have performed highly intelligent and valuable acts of police service.

nine minutes after 4:00, a cool start this morning and a nice breeze is blowing. that will blow a few clouds through the area at times but it's going to be a dry day. no sign of showers. it's the weekend that will turn colder, chilly to start with, colder come sunday morning. right now temperatures dropped to 50 in reading with clear skies, 63 in cape may, shy of 60 degrees right now in philadelphia. we'll see plenty of sunshine, about two hours from now. sun is coming up this morning. sunshine and a few passing clouds but just fair weather clouds riding in on a wind. no sign of activity on the radar. don't expect to see it today. so, a typical fall day. 60s for allentown, reading and quakertown. partly to mostly sunny skies for doylestown, trenton and mount holly and along the coast upper 60s for atlantic city and rehobeth. vineland will warm to 67 degrees. and upper 60s for philadelphia,

road to the vine street expressway. 14-minute trip. watch for ongoing construction in the center city area, 19th street south is closed between vine street and the ben franklin parkway. right now we're not dealing with a lot of traffic but follow the signs and detours and you'll be fine. as for the p.a. turnpike, great so far for the morning. we're moving along nicely. you can see all of the roads are green, 23 minutes at the most eastbound from valley forge to route 1. when i come back we're going to check new jersey roads. they are out there, often invisible hiding in plain sight. hundreds of teens and people in early 20s living on the streets. meet the faces of philadelphia's homeless youth next in an nbc 10 digital exclusive. also next, this developing story about a former nba star right now lamar odom is in a hospital fighting for his life.

>> sleep for about a month. >> alone and vulnerable, in philadelphia, hundreds of young people in their late teens and early 20s are homeless. they walk the streets, they sleep in parks, or abandoned houses. homeless because of families shattered by drug and alcohol abuse, violence or poverty. they are mostly invisible. nbc 10's team spent time getting to know these kids. vince introduces us to the faces of homeless youth and what is being done to help them. >> reporter: you probably walked by them on the street. sat next to them on the subway.

>> i'm not done. i'm probably one of those getting killed. >> young mothers and bright high school and college students and our homeless youth. >> i would sleep anywhere i could for about a month. >> he was 17 sleeping on a couch in the lobby of an apartment building, one time he says he walked from wilmington to philadelphia after getting kicked out. all while attending high school every day. >> i would hang out with my friends or do something at the school, go to the library or something, then around 8:00 just find somewhere to sleep. >> she says she left her parents house because she was abused. she was in high school when she started couch stoyfing at friends. eventually she wound up on the street and hit her breaking point riding the el for hours, just to get sleep. >> those days i was really -- i didn't feel loved at all. >> these are two of many young

people fighting for a place to call home. a count in january found more than 600 people between the ages of 18 to 24 homeless in philadelphia. experts like temple university psychology professor steinberg believe the number is conservative. >> because they are undercounted it makes it seem like the numbers are smaller than they really are. but it is a big problem. >> we interviewed nearly two dozen current and formerly homeless youth too old for children services but not truly adults, services taylored to them are sparse. >> that stage of development gives us the last best opportunity to help them change their path. >> john is with covenant house pennsylvania t city's only crisis shelter serving this age group. about 34 kids a month are turned away. many are young or expectant mothers. >> unfortunately the city of philadelphia, the city of brotherly love has left homeless kids out in the cold.

>> reporter: city officials say they are committed to the issue but the u.s. department of housing and urban development provides the majority of funding. hud promises to focus on family homelessness but not until the end of the decade, too late for kids who have no place to stay tonight. >> frankly, if we don't catch them here, they are going to go on many of these kids to become the next generation of homeless adu adults. >> this boy is now in college and emma now a mother has an apartment. >> when you have your own place, you don't have to depend on nobody and you have a job, believe me, it's a beautiful thing. >> it's an eye opening story you can go in depth with the digital exclusive, there you can meet each of the young people we interviewed. hear their experiences and find out how you can get involved to help them.

it's available exclusively on nbc10.com. today at noon you can join vince and fellow reporter morgan for a facebook question and answer session about their investigation. that's at noon on the nbc 10 facebook page. this developing story in las vegas, we're waiting for an update on former nba player lamar odom after he was found unconscious at a brothel. investigators say employees found him unconscious in a room. he was taken to a hospital. the owner says odom was quote fighting for his life. though the hospital hasn't released his condition. the 35-year-old is a two-time nba champion with the l.a. lakers,y gained fame as the ex-husband of khloe kardashian. and this is a landmark verdict perhaps. a jury has decided a milwaukee gun store was negligent in selling a gun that was eventually used to shoot and

seriously injure two police officers. the jury found that badger guns is at fault for the illegal sale of the weapon used in that shooting. investigators say the 18-year-old who shot both officers got the gun through a straw purchase. that's when someone buys a gun for someone else who can't legally do so. badger guns has been ordered to pay nearly $6 million to those injured police officers. in addition to more than $700,000 in punitive damages. an oklahoma community that had two schools destroyed by a massive tornado is now adding storm shelters to nearly two dozen schools. voters in the town of moore approved that proposal during a school district meeting last night. ten storm shelters have already been built with donation and grant money. now this approved measure will cover the remainder of the schools in moore. seven children died in 2013 when a tornado tore through two schools that did not have storm shelters.

20 minutes after 4:00. a little bit of a chill is in the air. it's going to get cooler the next couple days. nice clear view looking across the delaware 59 in philadelphia. a couple degrees cooler than yesterday. we have a westerly wind at 7 miles an hour. we'll be watching that, the wind will be picking up and at times will be gusty. a gentle breeze blog at the studios, as the skies clear out, mostly clear right now but there are some clouds that will be blowing through during the day. winds are just below 10 miles an hour in the pocono mountains, 5-mile-an-hour breeze for millville, the cooler air coming into play. you see low 50s for pottstown, millville down to 53 degrees and there are some 40s to be found, west town, chester county and coatesville in the 40s right now. and still falling. but we do have clouds that are coming in. i don't expect to see showers with these clouds, they will be moving through during the day. we'll still get enough sunshine to see temperatures warm into the upper 60s.

the winds will also be gusting to 22 miles an hour. that's at 9:00 this morning. this afternoon we'll still see a breezy day. so partly sunny skies, the fair-weather clouds blowing through the area and the temperatures where they should be this time of year. mid to upper 60s. but there's colder air on the way this weekend. the seven-day forecast in the next half hour. >> we'll stand by for that. it's 4:21. time to check the morning drive. let's see if there is anything that could slow you down on this fine morning. jessica boyington watching 295 now for us. >> we're heading through the work zone here, chris. this is an ongoing construction project here around the black horse pike. you can see everybody moving along nicely though. lane restrictions in place, just to watch out for, southbound from 38 up to this point at the black horse pike, 13 minutes, so no real problems. use caution when traveling through. in new jersey we're dealing with more construction, route 22 at

54 which is around 12th street watch for traffic shift there. and also on the 42 freeway in new jersey, southbound between 295 and creek road, we have three lanes closed with intermittent stoppages until about 6:00 a.m. we'll have more and mass transit when i come back in the next ten minutes. >> job seekers, this from the delaware bureau, a job fair today at the christiana mall in newark. senators and a congressman are hosting this event which hires workers for the holiday season. store managers will be looking for employees starting at 3:00 this afternoon. here is another opportunity. king of prussia mall also getting ready for the holiday shopping season. can you believe we're talking about holiday shopping already. here we are. the mall wants to hire between 1500 and 2,000 workers to help during the time between thanksgiving and new year's. mall officials are hiring early to get people trained and ready.
