friday. i'm chris cato. let's begin with meteorologist bill henley and his first alert forecast. a little cool. >> and breezy too, the winds are blowing, 7 miles an hour. others have seen the wind die down. it's a southwest wind so that is going to lead to a warm-up this afternoon. right now temperatures are going the other direction. 50 in wilmington, northeast philadelphia 53, look at the 40s for wrightstown and doylestown at 46 degrees and it's 44 in south philadelphia. you will see sunshine, you'll need your sunglasses, at 6:00, 50 degrees, the sun is up and warming us up at 9:00, 55, then in the 60s this afternoon. we're not going to see 60s this weekend. taking a turn for the the colder saturday and sunday. got your neighborhood by neighborhood forecast when i'm back in ten minutes. jessica boyington right now watching first alert traffic. >> and bill, a few problems to start off with the chestnut street bridge closed over 95, to

penn's landing. they have diverting traffic off at front street north and southbound. take dock to race to columbus or get on spruce over on to columbus and get by that for right now. if you're heading out the door on the vine street expressway this construction running late, so we do have the vine street expressway closed in between the schuylkill and broad street in both directions right now. that will be out there until about 5:00 this morning. update when they pick up this construction. >> on to this stunning story. this morning a university of delaware student who police describe as obsessed faces murder charges in the stabbing death of a local psychiatrist. an internet post from ten months ago may provide a possible motive. that post was signed by christopher frick, the same name as the man who confessed to the killing. in the post the writer complained about the now murdered doctor and the behavioral health center where she worked. katy zachry is live in our

center with moren-k5 on this. >> as you can imagine, this is just shocking, the campus of the university of delaware where the suspect is enrolled as a math major. christopher frick you saw his picture, a senior on campus but now in jail charged with murdering his psychiatrist. police tell us frick was obsessed with dr. caroline ekong. police say dr. ekong was not aware of her patient's obsession for her. investigators say they searched frick's parents home and they found a pattern of obsession there. his classmates are stunned. >> pretty astonishing someone from here would just like go off and do that. it's pretty traumatic. >> coming up at 4:30 police reveal how long they believe frick plotted to kill his doctor for how many years. and we're also finding some revealing online posts from the suspect that we'll share with you in the next 25 minutes. live in the digital operations center, katy zachry, "nbc 10 news." 4:03, a heist that sounds

like something out of hollywood. thieves plunder a jewelry store by tunnelling in through a business wall. when young kim walked into his dry-cleaning business he found a gaping hole in the bathroom where police say thieves created a makeshift tunnel to get into the time and gold jewelry store on 19th street. they stole jewels from a safe at about $100 in cash from the dry-cleaning store. the owner says some clothes were damaged in the process. >> had to clean again all clothes again so take me about a week to clean all the things. >> the detectives say they are working on getting surveillance video and hopes of making an arrest. a woman is recovering this morning after someone shot her in the neck last night. sky force 10 was over the scene at 20th and ra no vo street in the west oak lane neighborhood. someone shot the woman in the back of the neck as she sat in that car you see.

she was in serious but stable condition as of last night. police have not made an arrest or released a possible motive. this morning we're still waiting to learn the name of a worker who died when a tree fell on him in chester county. sky force 10 was over the scene yesterday in elverson. a tree trimming company was working there when the tree toppled, killing the man. no word on what went wrong. >> investigators hope toxicology reports will give them clues into the mysterious death of that 3-year-old camden county boy. the initial autopsy on brandon creato was inconclusive meaning it offered no definitive cause of death. police found brendan's body tuesday on the banks of the cooper river in hadden township a half mile from his home. three hours earlier his father had called 911 to report him missing. sources tell nbc 10 the detectives believe the boy's body was placed where it was found. investigators say toxicology results can often take as long

as 30 days but in this case the state lab fast tracked them. >> happening today at philadelphia international airport, the end of an era in commercial aviation. the final u.s. airways flight will take off as that company's merger with american airlines nears completion. flight 1939 will depart from philadelphia at 10:05 a.m., named after the year that the airline was founded, it will head to charlotte, then phoenix. it will be flying under the american airlines banner. some folks in pittsburgh are upset the plane isn't coming there because u.s. airways was formed in pittsburgh as all american aviation. >> 4:06. new this morning philadelphia police want help in finding this missing woman. 75-year-old joyce laury suffers from alzheimer's, dementia and schizophrenia last seen yesterday around 5:00 p.m. after she left her home near second

and church street in old city. if you think you have seen her, call police. a janitor strike that would have impacted dozens of buildings has been averted. the union reached a tentative agreement yesterday, the 2800 custodial workers clean about 170 buildings in the city. they threatened to walk off the job if there wasn't a new agreement before the contract expired at midnight. emergency road work will continue this morning in old city as jessica showed us, crews working to fix that four-foot crack in a column under the chestnut street bridge. it's expected to reopen this weekend. take a look here. you can see the crack the department of transportation noticed during an inspection in april. they were going to begin repairs next week but a pedestrian spotted the damaged column on wednesday, they thought it had grown so police closed the intersection just to be safe. drivers will have to use the detour but pedestrians are still

allowed to walk over the bridge. fix it completely, not patch it up. fix it. that's dangerous. >> we find a bridge or aspect of a bridge that we find to be unsafe we don't hess tight close the structure. >> the project will cost about $80,000 that comes out of pen dot's budget. happening today firefighters will install smoke alarms in as many as 240 homes in strawberry mansion district. the fire department and the insurance society of philadelphia teamed up for this event. it kicks off at 10:00 a.m. eight minutes after 4:00, it's dry in philadelphia but i am tracking some showers. they are falling to the north coming with a cold front which is really going to kick up the wind. we'll see sunshine so the clouds will be moving out.

that wind increases this weekend and is turning colder for both saturday and for sunday. right now 45 in reading. scattered clouds and shy of the 60 degree mark in cape may at this hour. no showers here, that's a nice clear view across the delaware from the adventure aquarium. we'll see plenty of sunshine during the afternoon, the few clouds with us this morning will not last. there are the showers you can see a line of showers, that's the cold front pushing into the pocono mountains. the showers look like they are going to miss most of the philadelphia area, but the poconos getting light rain now in the scranton area to the north of allentown this morning. so, expect it to be dry and mild this afternoon. 60s for allentown, reading and quakertown. we'll see sunshine for trenton, mount holly 67, and middle 60s for doylestown and norristown and along the coast mid to upper 60s today with partly to mostly sunny skies. for philadelphia, a nice warm-up

today to 68 degrees. that's right around normal for this time of year. westchester 64, 67 in wilmington. does turn cold over the weekend. a close look at the cold air when i come back in ten minutes. >> ten minutes after 4:00. the schuylkill expressway was a mess yesterday afternoon. some people may still be trying to get home after that. hopefully things are clear this morning. >> pretty much all clear right now. we're dealing with spots of construction right now on the schuylkill right around spring garden street on the eastbound lanes you can see this road sign here, creating lane restrictions so we have the left lane lost. traffic moving because there's not a lot of volume so far. eastbound drive time still great from the blue route to the vine street expressway. 12 minutes so no increase there. if you are on the schuylkill expressway getting off at the city avenue exit watch out because there's traffic lights on flash out of the city avenue bridge before presidential boulevard so at the bottom of the schuylkill off ramp. when i come back i'm going to go

decoration. contractors working near the area found the body and then they realized it was real when they tried to move it. police found an i.d. card nearby and they were able to identify the woman. a man is now in custody facing murder charges but neighbors are worried for their children. >> help, do something. we got kids out here that play. no kids should have to see that. none. and now we have to pretend it was something else. >> police have identified the victim as a 31-year-old woman from that area there. a 27-year-old man is accused of killing her. a father charged with beating his son to death at a church in new york is expected in court for a felony hearing today. bruce leonard and his wife are charged with first-degree manslaughter. police say a counseling session with the 19-year-old son lucas turned physical and then lucas died after suffering what they call blunt force trauma.

authorities say his 17-year-old brother was also beaten and is still in the hospital. three other church members were arrested. the u.s. airman held a hero for helping sthoop terrorist attack aboard a train in france has been released from the hospital now after being stabbed outside a nightclub. spencer stone was stabbed during an argument with two men. the incident was not related to terrorism or what transpired in paris. no arrests have been made. suspended over free speech. a college professor says she's being punished for exercising her first amendment right. divya nair is a professor at the community college of philadelphia, she says she was suspended for speaking out against increased police presence on campus. this comes after administrators added new security measures following threats of a man on the campus with a gun last week. students and staff protested the security measures which include more police patrols and students

having to show i.d. when they enter the building. the school says this isn't a freedom of speech issue and nair violated her contract. but protesters say otherwise. >> only a few hours after our protest dispersed that she found out she was suspended without pay. we recognize the police as oppressive racist institution. >> this speaks to the increasing militarization of the campus. >> she will remain suspended as the school investigation continues. >> scheduled for today in the federal tax and bank fraud trial accused of misusing federal education contracts and loans to pay his personal expenses. he denies the charges. he is representing himself in court and says prosecutors have unfairly targeting him adding that the government's case is weak and she eager to prove it. >> in the next few weeks, the details regarding these issues will become clear.

something that i think people need to know is that i wouldn't do anything wrong to the philadelphia school district. >> fattah jr. faces jail time and a fine up to $13 million. his father congressman chaka fattah is charged in a different case, his trial isn't scheduled to begin until next spring. and here are more details on the charges against him. according to the federal indictment, fattah senior is accused of misusing influence, stealing taxpayer money and donations. he is also accused of accepting a secret million dollar campaign loan and taking a bribe from a lobbyist who wanted to be a u.s. ambassad ambassador. he has denied all those charges. congressman fattah is married to nbc 10 anchor renee fattah. she is labeled as person e and affiliate of the fattah enterprise. the feds allege that she took part in a scheme to fraudulently sell a car in order to pay closing costs on a vacation

home. she is not charged with a crime and she denies any wrong doing. renee is on leave from nbc 10. >> a town in south jersey is trying to put brakes on drunk driving expanding an initiative that leaders say is saving lives. it builds on a program that started in december called don't take the risk. they're teaming up with uber and be my designated driver to provide safe rides to people who are under the influence. here is how it works. an evesham township resident can get a free ride from uber or be my db. >> protect our children, first shouldn't be driving when they are drunk. >> the program does not use taxpayer money instead businesses and some anonymous residents donated to pay for the rides. if you are not an evesham

into the area, but the back edge is in western pennsylvania so the clouds will swing through during the day. we may charlotte with clouds but we'll break out in sunshine during the day. that's going to lead to a warm-up. the only showers moving through the pocono mountains, expect those to stay to the north. we'll see clearing skies today, lots of sunshine and this afternoon some rain showers to the west. but look what happens as we head into tomorrow morning. that's when we get a chill in philadelphia. that's saturday. 7:00, and that is snow falling in northwestern pennsylvania. we won't get the snow but the cold air that's in northwest pennsylvania, that's moving in for sunday morning. for today, becoming sunny. after some clouds we'll clear out. a breezy day today with afternoon temperatures in the 60s. and this weekend gusty winds for saturday and there you go, 57 the high temperature on saturday. a little chillier on sunday. that's a nice rebound after morning temperatures sunday in the 30s. full seven-day forecast coming

this, a house bill that would require universal background checks for anyone who buys a gun in pennsylvania. supporters held a rally in norristown. the legislation would require all firearms including private sales to be done for a background check to be done. during the purchase authorities would check out the buyer's criminal background and would check information about whether the buyer had ever involuntarily been committed to a mental health facility. >> i think there is more control over vehicles than guns. so i mean, there's a lot of issues we need to look at. >> all of the polls show nearly 90% of all pennsylvanians, gun owners and non-gun owners support universal background checks. it's the legislature, frankly, that is out of step with the people of pennsylvania. >> now this bill was first introduced in 2013. but it did not pass.
