right now at 11:00, a stabbing at a walmart in northeast philadelphia. the search is on for a man who police say robbed the store and attacked a cashier. good morning, i'm lauren mayk. the man was stealing a large tv at the philadelphia mills walmart. nbc 10's monique braxton is live in the digital operations center this morning. monique, i know you've talked to the cashier? >> that's right, lauren. he declined to speak on camera citing walmart's policy against doing so. but in our video you can't help but notice the bandage on his right arm. investigators say just before 1:30 this morning this 35-year-old male captured on

surveillance videotape stabbed the cashier. investigators say the suspect had a 48-inch flat screen tv and boots and was on his way out of the store. when confronted by the cashier, he presented an old $10 receipt. the cashier told him the receipt wasn't authentic. at that point, this male threatened the cashier. >> the male said "i'm going to kill you," and then he pulled out a folding knife and lunged it toward the chest of the cashier. the cashier blocked that lunge of the knife with his right arm and was stabbed in the right arm. >> reporter: the suspect fled with the flat screen but not before a customer in the parking lot attempted to block his cart with -- his car with a shopping cart. the suspect then drove away in a light-colored hatchback toyota prius. now, we spoke to police about incidents like this occurring just weeks before the holiday season. i think thanksgiving is, what, six weeks away? we're working on that for you at

11:30. in the digital operations center. monique braxton, nbc 10 news. skyforce 10 over the scene of a multivehicle crash in camden county. this happened around 8:30 in gloucester township. no injuries have been reported. a woman is in the hospital after an abduction that led to a car crashing into a building. a police source tells nbc 10 a man tried to abduct her in north philadelphia. police say the victim's sister exchanged gunfire with the kidnapper. no one was hurt but as the suspect drove off with the victim, he crashed into aing near gerard college. the victim is hospitalized in stable condition. they did track down the suspect and he is in custody. it's a pretty nice fall day out there as we take a live look at philadelphia's boat house row this morning. enjoy the temperatures in the 60s because we're in for a big

cooldown. nbc 10 first alert meteorologist bill henley is here with the forecast on your friday. bill? >> lauren, we've been tracking cooler weather all weekend. it's set to move in tonight. today, as you showed, lots of sunshine but notice the flags on top of boat house row and the shake in the camera, too. that's the gusty wind blowing right now. in spite of the wind, we're getting enough sunshine to warm us into the 60s. a nice rebound from temperatures in the 40s and low 50s to start with. 61 at philadelphia international. the winds are now gusting to 23 miles an hour in the city and that's not the only spot. 24 mile an hour wind gusts in northeast philadelphia and gusting to 23 miles an hour in the pocono mountains. that wind will continue. it's blowing clouds towards central pennsylvania. these clouds likely staying clear of our area so we'll see enough sunshine to warm into the middle to upper 60s during the day today. then mainly clear skies this evening, the temperatures will drop down. right now 61 also at northeast

philadelphia. low 60s in delaware and south jersey. in fact, wilmington is 61, already 62 in millville and atlantic city and 58 in allentown which will warm into the lower 60s today. so sunshine will be right, 64 degrees at 1:00. by 4:00 this afternoon a little bit warmer. then the cooling process once the sun goes down. it will be 60 degrees at 7:00 but that's the last hour in the 60s and the last sign of the 60s right on through the weekend. quite a cooldown ahead. we'll go through it neighborhood by neighborhood when i'm back later this half hour. investigators hope toxicology reports will give them some clues in the mysterious death of a three-year-old camden county boy. the initial autopsy on brendan creato was inconclusive, meaning it offered no definitive cause in his death. police found brendan's body tuesday morning on the banks of the cooper river in haddon township about a half mile from his home. three hours earlier, his father called 911 to report him

missing. sources tell nbc 10 that detectives believe the boy's body was placed where it was found. investigators say toxicology result cans often take as long as 30 days but in this case the state lab may frost track them. happening now, opening statements are under way in the federal tax and bank fraud trial of chaka fattah, jr., he's accused of misusing federal education contracts and loans to pay personal expenses. he denies the charges. the 33-year-old, who is representing himself, says prosecutors unfairly targeted him, adding the government's case is weak and he is eager to prove it. fattah, jr., faces jail time and a fine of up to $13 million. his father, congressman fattah, is charged in a different case. his trial is not scheduled to begin until next spring. and here's more details on the charges against him. according to the indictment, fattah, sr., is accused of misusing his congressional influence, stealing taxpayer money and charitable donations.

he's also accused of accepting a secret million dollar campaign loan and taking a bribe from a lobbyist who wanted to be an ambassador. he has denied all of the charges. congressman fattah is married to nbc 10 anchor renee chenault fattah. she is referenced as personal e in the complaint against her husband and an affiliate of the fattah enterprise. the feds allege she took part in a scheme to fraudulently sell a car in order to pay closing costs on a vacation home. she is not charged and denies wrongdoing. renee is on leave from nbc 10. we have just learned in the last few hours that ryder university suspended its entire men's cross country team after members planned to run around the track naked. now, this school in lawrence township, mercer county, launched an investigation after the students were found on the track back on september 5. they had alcohol in their possession at the time and that investigation found members did not intend to coerce any runners to participate in the naked run

california police say they expect a mud-covered highway to reopen to traffic this afternoon. it was a flash flood yesterday afternoon that sent water, mud, and rocks on to the road, stranding drivers there. nbc's miguel almaguer has this story. >> reporter: it hit with fury,

founding rain, relentless marble-sized hail and then -- >> i hope it stops. >> it's winding up. >> reporter: -- the mud slide. one of california's busiest freeway covered in mud and brought to a standstill overnight. cars, semi trucks snaking down interstate 5 trap in a gridlock nightmare. >> all the mud just came from right here and just wedged us in. >> reporter: mountains crumbled into streets, swallowing dozens of cars, destroying homes. witnesses could feel the power. and hear the rumbling. >> it was just -- like a freight train. >> reporter: in some spots the mud several feet deep. the crippling flash flooding triggering at least four rescues, children pulled to safety. first responders ordered evacuations. no one hurt, but nearly everyone -- especially drivers -- caught by surprise. >> took about maybe 20 seconds, 30 second for all this to

happen. it was very, very scary. >> nearly six inches of rain an hour hammered some neighborhoods. too much water too quickly for parched hills hardened by four years of drought. this powerful storm system, the most dangerous weather seen by some first responders here in decades. for now, this vicious punch has passed but this morning there is plenty of damage left behind. >> that was nbc's miguel almaguer reporting. the forest service says a wildfire in central texas is now about 25% contained. the fire has burned more than six square miles. hundreds of people have already left their homes and more evacuations are expected today. no injuries have been reported but the fire destroyed almost three dozen structures. forecasters predict more hot, dry weather through the weekend and that will fuel the flames. a top aide to democratic front-runner hillary clinton is

washington. >> for more on that next republican debate now, gop front-runner donald trump tweeting this morning. he says cnbc, which will host the event on october 28, agreed to keep the debate to two hours. this comes just one day after trump threatened to reconsider taking part in the debate. the last gop debate hosted by cnn lasted more than three hours. check out these new photos of saturn's moon. nasa released these pictures of saturn's icy moon after a spacecraft captured it during a fly-by on wednesday. the craft flew about 1,100 miles above the moon's surface. we're expecting more new pictures of saturn at the end of the month. it's going to get cold here, but not that cold. we will see temperatures come down over the weekend. today got enough sunshine, 60s. though breeze is blowing, it's going to go stronger tomorrow and that's really going to help things turn colder. temperatures will drop down into

the 30s before the weekend is out. widespread frost and freezing conditions in parts of the area. right now, though, sunshine. the pocono mountains low 50s, 58 in trenton and wilmington is in the 60s and climbing. just a few scattered clouds in the pocono mountains blowing past camelback. it will be cold enough to make snow over the weekend. i doubt they will have the snow-making equipment going as temperatures are going to warm up significantly next week and mother nature will not be producing any snow for our areas. barely a cloud in the sky, a few scattered clouds right now in cape may. in the clear in philadelphia. the clouds are farther to the north and west and if you keep on going you see the clouds moving through michigan? that's a cold front and that will clear the area tomorrow morning. it's producing scattered showers in michigan. i expect it to come through our area dry but it sets the stage for sunday cold. in the morning, temperatures below freezing for much of the area. quakertown could be down to 29

degrees. widespread frost for those areas that don't see freezing conditions, likely on sunday morning and then it gets even colder come monday morning. so we've got a couple cold days it will feel more like december than the middle of october. but before we get there, a nice warmup today. the poke now mountains 54 this afternoon. low 60s for allentown and reading and plenty of sunshine for trenton. mount holly and doylestown, everybody will sea readings in the 60s. 60 for cape may, rehoboth beach 66. plenty of sunshine but a gusty wind this afternoon for philadelphia will be in the 60s for today. then say so long to the 60s for the weekend. tomorrow afternoon gusty winds out of the northwest will limit us to 57 in the afternoon. that's after a morning low temperature in the 40s. some suburbs in the 30s on saturday morning. but widespread 30s for sunday. a cold breeze blowing during the day on sunday, just 55 in the afternoon.

and colder on monday. less wind, clear skies, 33 in the city. so that means many of the suburbs will drop down below freezing on monday morning. the rebound comes tuesday and then wednesday and thursday we will see temperatures warm into the 70s. it's no secret that too much stress is bad for your health. but a new study shows just how dangerous a stressful job can be. and which ones are the worst.

does your job stress your out? a new study finds a high-stress position could increase your risk of a stroke. researchers in china studied thousands of workers in four countri countries, including the u.s. they found people are high-stress jobs were 22% more likely to have a stroke than those in low-stress jobs. now researchers found the risk was higher in women. they say jobs that cause the most stress were very demanding but also offered little personal control -- things like nursing aids, restaurant workers and other service jobs. when high school seniors are trying to decide on a college, they may consider things like professors, libraries, and even sports teams. but a new survey shows the quality of the restroom -- yes, restrooms -- may be just as important. nearly two-thirds of surveyed students said restrooms shaped their view of the school's

philadelphia police are searching for this man. they say he stabbed an employee during a robbery inside the philadelphia mills walmart in northeast philadelphia early this morning. nbc 10's monique braxton is live in the digital operations center this morning. monique, this employee was a cashier. how is he doing today? >> reporter: he's doing great under the circumstances, lauren. he was treated at the store and continued to work his shift. now, we captured video of the cashier as he was getting off. you see his right arm is bandaged. he declined to speak to us on camera citing walmart's policy against employees doing so. investigators say just before 1:30 this morning, this man, a 35-year-old, stabbed a cashier, investigators say the suspects had a 48 inch flat screen tv and two pairs of boots and was on his way out of the store. the cashier stopped him.

police say when the cashier told the suspect a receipt he presented wasn't authentic, the man opened his knife, told the cashier he was going to kill him, and lunged at him. the cashier was stabbed. we spoke with police about the crime occurring just weeks before the holiday shopping season. >> this mall mawalmart is open hours. even as we near the christmas season there are already 50 people inside the store, 30 employees and 20 shoppers inside the store when this happened. >> reporter: police tell us the suspect fled with the flat screen in a light colored hatchback, maybe a toyota prius. police are hoping you recognize this suspect and call them. we're going to continue to monitor developments in this case. anything happens, you'll be the first to know it. in the digital operations center, monique braxton, nbc 10 news.

it's heading to charlotte, then phoenix, then san francisco before returning back to philadelphia tomorrow but by then it will be flying under the american airlines banner. this follows the merger of the two airlines. if you're traveling on the airline, the advice, get there early because the merge merger of the reservation systems could cause issues. nbc's gabe gutierrez has more on that from atlantis airport. is. >> reporter: u.s. airways is preparing for its final flight amid confusion. >> we were supposed to fly american. when we check in we were directed to u.s. airways over here. >> reporter: tomorrow it will finally merge its reservation system with american. but not everyone's on board yet. >> we were just like are we american or u.s. air? we didn't know what we were supposed to be checking in as. >> reporter: two years ago the airlines announced plans to join. american says since then it's been working towards tomorrow's transition, running five million mock reservations, testing more than 9,000 computers and kiosks

reporting. the final u.s. airways flight will be the red eye from san francisco to philadelphia later tonight. it will be at least another few months before the u.s. airways fleet is fully repainted and employee uniforms are swapped out. new surveillance video of lamar odom's final arrival at the southern nevada brothel where he was found this week. take a look at this. the basketball star can be seen on this video entering the love ranch just before 5:30 saturday night. he was found unresponsive in a vip villa on tuesday. the brothel owner says odom paid $75,000 and was getting ready to extend his stay. employees told police odom used cocaine the day he arrived and an herbal sexual stimulant throughout his visit. sources close to odom say doctors found multiple drugs in his system and he suffered the a stroke and is in a coma. a gruesome discovery in ohio after the body of a woman who was at first mistaken for a halloween decoration. contractors working near the

area found the body and realized it was real when they went to remove it. police found an i.d. card nearby and they were able to identify the woman. one man is in custody facing murder charges. neighbors say they are still worried for their own children. >> police help. do something. we got kids out here that play. an eight-year-old seen that this morning. no kid should have to see that. none. and now we have to pretend it was something else. >> reporter: police did identify the victim as a 31-year-old woman. a 27-year-old man is now accused of killing her. in just a few minutes, president obama welcomes the leader of south korea to the white house. president park geun-hye is the fourth asian leader to visit the president this year. the two leaders will talk about the u.s./south korea alliance and its role in assuring regional stability and security. the visit follows heightened tensions this summer at the border between the two koreas. afghanistan residents and politicians say they support

president obama's decision to slow the pace of the u.s. troop withdrawal. one politician hopes the u.s. forces will crack down on all insurgents in the region, including in pakistan. yesterday, the president announced 5,500 troops will stay in afghanistan through 2017. president obama said afghanistan -- afghan forces are not as strong as they should be to deal with the fragile security situation. a new report says american special operations analysts knew the target of a deadly air strike in afghanistan was a hospital being used by doctors without borders. the associated press says officials suspected the hospital was being used by a pakistani operative to coordinate alban activities. doctors without borders said the facility was not being used for military purposes. pope francis is known for slipping out to visit the homeless and he's done it again. last night, the pontiff greeted about 30 men who have taken up residence at the vatican's new shelter just a few blocks from

st. peter's square. the pope spent about 20 minutes with the men and with volunteers who run the shelter. he also got a tour of the dorm and other rooms at the facility. for the third time in recent weeks, someone has defaced a statue of a newly canonized catholic saint. it left a statue of junipero serra decap rated decapitated. some native americans say serra suppressed their cultures and facilitated the threat of disease which is reduced their population. a connecticut man is facing charges for at least ten robberies and it's all thanks to an 11-year-old girl and her drawing skills. rebecca dipietro was honored by police in stratford for a sketch of a burglary suspect. now, police came to her door a few months ago and asked if she had seen anyone suspicious after a string of burglaries on her street. rebecca drew up a doodle in a couple of minutes.

she didn't think it was going to lead to anything but that's before it was matched up to pedro bruno who has since confessed to ten burglaries, including the break in at dipietro's own home. >> i drew a picture of him and it wasn't, like, the best picture, it was just, like, a head, legs and a hat. after i thought about in the the morning i was like, oh, he's probably going to crumple it up and throw it out. >> payback, you know? you did this and my daughter's drawing resolved the issue. >> police were able to recover the items stolen. meanwhile, rebecca says she's not sure if she wants to become a sketch artist when she grows up, she does have something for her resume, though. a 93-year-old world war ii veteran just received a purple heart award. it came so late because no one knew he was so deserving of the honor. a tattered letter describes how leo sill silverstein was

retailers aren't ready for you to insert the card yet. >> reporter: they're here whether you swipe, dip, punch in a pin or go without. those new credit cards embedded with a security computer chip are now hitting the cash registers nationwide. but it's not exactly been a smooth rollout. >> we just got the new mastercard with the new little chip in it and it was compromised. >> had to slide it through and it didn't take. >> i didn't know why my credit card wasn't going through. that's never anything you don't want to experience. >> reporter: october 1 was the deadline for retailers to have the readers in place, most don't and so far only about 20% of consumers have actually received their new cards in the mail. >> any time you're dealing with unhappy customers or forcing customers to take steps that they wouldn't normally have to do, it's an issue that retailers are going to have to deal with. >> reporter: it's a lot to deal with. think about the companies that automatically charge your credit card every month.

newspapers, web sites, gym memberships, kids music classes. a lot of those charges aren't going through because the old credit cards expire and customers aren't equipped to update their billing information. netflix's stock dropped 8% thursday and blamed the new credit card switchover for slowing its growth. >> i don't think the banks and the credit card companies are doing enough to educate the consumer. you get your new card, you realize there's a chip on it, you're not sure how that works, it's sort of trial by error. >> reporter: so what should you do when your new card arrives? first, activate the card, usually with just a simple phone call. second, provide your updated payment information to any of the companies that bill you regularly. sometimes the number doesn't change but the exseparation date does. third, beware. scammers are sending e-mails asking for your credit card information. don't provide it. watch your bank statements for any charges that look suspicious. eventually you'll insert your new card into the reader rather

-- culminating event. so we're partnering with brown shop rite, their store at roberts and fox street and we're going to have zumba, we're going to have a samba band kicking things off, we're going to have line dancing, health screenings, great food and just wonderful information from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. tomorrow so it's a wonderful free opportunity for people to kind of check in and check up on their health as well as their children so we have a kid zone as well. so it's a family event. >> a good time to do this as we're heading into the wintertime. people tend to get sick. it's a good time to focus on your health. i know you mentioned you have special guests coming as well. tell me about that. that's exciting. >> we do. we have a renown poet and author and educator who is coming in from chicago to do a ceremony that we call a libation which is basically to celebrate and acknowledge the ancestors and just express gratitude for all

that they have contributed to our lives today and so it's really consistent with our approach to this being a mind-body-spirit event to look at the whole self and the whole community. >> and i mentioned -- you mentioned you can bring your kids. what do you have for kids there? >> we have a kids zone, we'll have pumpkin decorating, face painting, clowns, dancing, all kinds of fun stuff for the entire family. >> now this is also sort of an anniversary/birthday party for you of sorts. you have been in the community for 12 years. can you believe it's been 12 years? >> yeah, i can. [ laughter ] >> it actually feels like that? >> as you know, the media has evolved a lot even within that 12-year period so to be the only african-american talk radio station still in economies tense in the state of pennsylvania is a real feat and so we have a lot to celebrate and we're really looking forward to inviting our listeners, inviting the entire community out to celebrate with us and get healthy at the same

starting monday at 7:00 p.m. here on nbc 10. getting close to lunchtime and getting lots of sunshine today. it was a chilly start this morning. we're in the 60s in philadelphia. barely a cloud in the sky. this weekend we're going to fuel the cold with clear skies, temperatures will plummet. 36 degrees, near the record low of 32. colder monday morning, 33. the record for monday morning is 29 and the record for tuesday morning is 27. but 27, well, it won't get that cold. 38 to start with on tuesday and this will be the beginning of a warming trend. before it moves in, we have cold ahead and that includes cape may which is warming up in the 60s right now. interior new jersey over the weekend is going to get especially cold sunday morning. look at the temperatures flirting with the freezing mark.

indian mills, hammonton and frost is likely into monday morning. so stand by for some really cold air. you can see the clouds off to the north and west. those clouds will come through the area dry and then the cold takes hold and friday will be dry and it should be dry this weekend. but we're tracking some showers that could produce some snow in parts of pennsylvania. freeze frost advisories in effect. frost advisory now for much of the south and into kentucky and west virginia. a freeze watch for the midwest and farther to the west a freeze warning and i expect some of those to be issued in our area as well. as far as showers are concerned, the clouds stay north and west today with scattered rain showers. it gets colder saturday morning and saturday morning look at the snow showers in western pennsylvania. we won't get the snow but we will get the cold. mainly sunny and breezy today, middle to upper 60s this

afternoon and then the 60s take a break for the weekend tomorrow after a morning low of 44 and the wind will be gusting. it will get chilly in a hurry. on saturday night if you go to the temple game at lincoln financial field, bundle up, temperatures will be in the 40s and a cold breeze blowing sunday. that will bring in colder air to start with. 36 degrees. just 55 in the afternoon and it turns colder for monday morning. 55 monday afternoon with bright sunshine and with clear skies it will get cold for the eagles game, too. game time temperatures will be in the 40s and falling backing in the 30s by tuesday morning. 65 tuesday afternoon and then hear come the 70s for wednesday and thursday.

>> this might be a tough one for phillies fans to swallow. yup, the mets are advancing to their first nlcs since 2006. they're going to face the chicago cubs beginning saturday in queens. and just like they did all year long, new york relied on their pitching to come up big here. it was a pitchers' duel in los angeles as they faced the dodgers in an elimination game. a close one until the end but the mets won 3-2 and the series 3-2 thanks to their strong bullpen. some excited mets fans. >> how about that? cubs fans will be excited to meet them. >> i'm sure they will! [ laughter ] we'll see how they get along. >> you'll be excited to see the sunshine today but you may not be thrilled with colder temperatures this weekend. 62 right now. just warmed up to 63 in northeast philadelphia and it is going to continue climbing into the middle to upper 60s this afternoon. by 4:0065 degrees. but then cooling off quickly this evening with gustier winds.
