chill in the air. >> then in the pacific the strongest hurricane ever recorded is closing in on mexico, hurricane patricia could have a catastrophic impact. glenn "hurricane" schwartz is tracking patricia. >> but we begin with brittney shipp with a weekend chill in the area. brittney? >> what a difference a day makes, yesterday in the high 70s and today anywhere between nine to up to 18 degrees colder, so 18 degrees colder in the poconos, down 13 degrees in philadelphia from this time yesterday, down 9 degrees in wilmington, down 10 degrees in atlantic city and millville, so your current temperatures are barely in the 60s. 64 degrees in philadelphia, 61 in chester spring, 62 degrees, mid 60s in wilmington, barely at 60 in pottstown, low 50s in the poconos. closer to south jersey, 69 here in woodbine, and tonight temperatures are going to get down into the 40s and 30s, so it is going to be a very cold start to your weekend, as well,

temperatures hovering around freezing for allentown and the poconos tonight. 32 degrees for philadelphia and 44 for atlantic city. a look back at yesterday, 77 degrees, today we're more than ten degrees cooler at 64. even into the weekend we are going to stay in the 60s both on saturday and sunday. we'll take a closer look at the forecast in just a bit. >> all right, brittney. now to hurricane patricia, strongest hurricane recorded in the western hemisphere and it's on track to mexico, making landfall in just a few hours and forecasters say its winds are strong enough to send a plane aloft and keep it flying. we're going to get to glenn "hurricane" schwartz in a moment, but first the preparations for this monster storm. >> reporter: mexican authorities have issued a state of emergency and people are bracing for sustained winds of 200 miles per hour. >> anyone on the coast is

extremely, extremely dangerous. >> reporter: patricia only formed on wednesday and continued to churn and grow, moving towards the mexican coast. it's expected to make landfall near the tourist resort of puerta vallarta. >> translator: this hurricane will effectively be the most intense hurricane that has existed in this part of the pacific in our country since records began in 1949. >> reporter: more than 7 million people will be directly affected when the storm makes landfall later tonight, including tourists from the united states. hotels are trying to evacuate guests. >> i just worry because, i mean, if we don't get out of here, and we drove in to town to get out, which is not the direction we wanted to go, so if we don't make the flight, then we're riding it out here. >> you know, once it makes landfall, there will be, you know, substantial surge and flooding at the coast. >> reporter: forecasters are calling hurricane patricia a

historic storm, and are advising people to move as far inland as possible. kurt gregory, nbc news. >> dire warnings there. for more on patricia's path we go to our in-house hurricane expert, glenn, tell us more about the storm's track. >> it's getting so close to land there's really no doubt that it's going to be making landfall within hours. you can see the tiny eye of it very clearly, and this is just no exaggeration, you can measure hurricanes in different ways. the maximum winds, highest winds ever recorded in this portion of the world, and also the lowest pressure ever recorded. so we continue to see it moving toward the northeast. the sustained winds at 200 miles an hour. and the pressure lower than anything in this portion of the world. the worst part of it is that

it's hitting land. if it was a category 5 in the middle of the ocean it wouldn't be as big a deal. no matter what anybody tells you, they call them hurricanes in the eastern pacific. it's typhoons in the western pacific. you can win a big bet on that one. as it makes landfall it's going to weaken, but it's going to cause tremendous amounts of rain. some of the remnants of that is going to go and hit texas over the weekend, not as a hurricane, but a lot of rain, and eventually some moisture coming our way. we'll talk about that with our seven day in a few minutes. >> you can track hurricane patricia and the weekend chill with our nbc 10 news app. new reports this afternoon say gunmen broke into desean jackson's california home and could be gang related. tmz reports the football star was not at home at the time but say there were about six people inside who fought the intruders.

authorities believe this was connected to a gang. sources tell tmz the intruders were not targeting jackson, but someone else inside the home. you might recall this is not the first time jackson has been the victim of a crime. january of last year his south philadelphia home was burglarized. the thieves made off with personal items and jewelry worth a quarter of a million dollars. the eagles released jackson back in march of 2014, just hours before that an article appeared on nj.com that talked about jackson's connections to a gang in l.a. jackson later told espn that report made, quote, crazy allegations. new information this afternoon on the deadly center city building collapse. heavy equipment operator will not learn his fate until next month. he was expected to be sentenced today for his role in the collapse, but that was moved back to november 3rd. benschop pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and other charges in connection with the collapse on june 5, 2013, a

building under demolition collapsed on a salvation army thrift store there, killed six people, 13 others were hurt. earlier this week a jury convicted contractor griffin campbell on six counts involuntary manslaughter. new information on the man who hit and killed a jogger, now facing reckless driving and gun charges. 29-year-old allison mcginnis was jogging on route 206 last summer, police say miller's pickup crossed into oncoming traffic and hit and killed mcginnis. miller's passenger also died. sky force 10 over the scene in august, police found a drug in miller's truck. details about toxicology tests are also not being released. today a south jersey community said good-bye to a little boy at the center of a mysterious death investigation. 3-year-old brendan creato was found dead last week in the woods in haddon township and today the boy was laid to rest.

nbc 10's cydney long was at today's service and joining us live from haddon township with more on the difficult day. >> reporter: a lot of emotion, as you might imagine, the impact of brendan's death has truly touched the heart of the community, we still have people within the hour stopping by the memorial and as close as the memorial is to where we're standing, that's how close the church is to brendan's grandparent's home, as well as his father's apartment, which was the last place he was seen before this terrible and mysterious tragedy. >> just full of energy like any other 3 year old. >> reporter: a little boy who loved legos and jake the pirate according to loved ones and planned to be the incredible hulk next weekend for halloween. hundreds came together inside haddon township's holy savior church to say good-bye to 3-year-old brendan creato. >> i was talking to the grandfather, people bringing them meals, offering them comfort. >> reporter: comfort today came in the form of hugs and tears after ten days of despair after

brend brendan's body was found by the cooper river. today a tiny coffin covered in white roses was set into the hearse. scott kelly grew up playing little league with brendan's grandfather. >> i said do you want to be alone or do you want people to be around? he said, no, it really helps people to be around. that's what's carrying him through all this, it's just devastating. >> reporter: kelly was moved by the intimacy of the prayers and called it a beautiful service. >> i think the father described it the best, mischievous, he was spontaneous, he loved music and the beatles yellow submarine was the last song they played in there. >> reporter: they know the community feels heart broken and says keep praying. >> people that don't really know them, so kind of pulled the community together. be nice to find out what happened, too. >> reporter: and investigators announced two days ago there was no forced entry into the father's apartment and no sign of any sexual assault to the little boy, though no one has been charged in brendan's death,

investigators are still very much hard at work. live in haddon township, cydney long, nbc 10 news. it is being called the worst accident in france in more than 30 years. 43 people died after a bus and a truck collided in the southern part of the country. it happened on a remote road near the famed wine country of bordeaux. nbc 10's keith jones is following new developments from our digital operations center and joins us with more. keith? >> jacqueline, the passengers of the bus were part of a retirement group on a day trip and we learned one of the victims was the truck driver's 3-year-old son, the truck driver was also killed. the road where the accident happened is said to be notoriously dangerous. this is video of the remains of the bus, it's a burnt-out shell. the truck was carrying lumber. rescue crews lifted the injured to nearby hospitals. nine people survived. the survivors were seen wrapped in foil blankets to keep warm. one french official said the truck driver lost control of the vehicle but the cause of this crash is still under investigation.

france's president said he was, quote, plunged into sadness and promises a full investigation. live in the digital operations center, keith jones, nbc 10 news. we now know the identity of the first american soldier killed in the fight against isis. 39-year-old master sergeant joshua wheeler was killed in a rescue operation in iraq. the defense department says wheeler died from small arms fire during the mission. the oklahoma native is the first american to die in iraq since u.s. forces withdrew four years ago. american special ops and kurdish forces landed near an isis prison early yesterday morning, the raid was supposed to rescue kurdish hostages about to be executed. kurdish troops stormed in, but isis guards inside fought back, so u.s. troops decided to step in. when the fight was over, the americans and curds got out with 75 hostages and five isis guards. another candidate who's dropping out of the race for president, lincoln chafee announced the end of his

campaign while speaking this morning to the women's forum held by the democratic national committee. the former governor of rhode island struggled to generate money or enthusiasm. >> i've been campaigning on a platform of prosperity through peace, but i have decided to end my campaign for the president today. thank you. but i would like to take this opportunity one last time to advocate for a chance to be given to peace. >> hillary clinton, bernie sanders, and former governor martin o'malley remain as the three main contenders for the democratic nomination. speaking of hillary clinton, she was also at the women's forum this morning, right now she's campaigning in virginia and tomorrow she will speak at a major gathering in iowa. on the republican side, ben carson now leads donald trump in two new polls among iowa republicans and today carson's campaign released its first tv ads. >> people are so concerned about the future, the future for their

children, the future for our nation. >> the two 30-second ads are part of a $500,000 buy airing in several early voting states. this all comes as a quinnipiac poll and des moines register bloomberg poll show carson leading the republican field in iowa. as carson surges, jeb bush has announced he's slashing staff and spending. nbc news has learned that cuts include a 40% reduction in payroll, reduced staffing at the campaign's miami headquarters, and slashing travel costs by 20%. the son and brother of past presidents entered the gop race with significant financial advantages but struggled to break through in a crowded republican primary where voters are supporting unorthodoxed candidates like trump and carson. bush released a statement that says it's no secret the contours of this race changed from what was anticipated at the start, we would be less than forthcoming

if we said we predicted in june a reality television star supporting canadian style single payer health care and partial birth abortion would be leading the primary. in the meantime trump is rejecting money, the billionaire businessman is calling on a group of super pacs to return all the money they've collected. his campaign says they are not authorized to use his name and likeness in their fundraising efforts. trump has repeatedly boasted about funding his campaign himself but financial disclosure reports reveal the majority of his expenses in recent months have been covered by contributions. a former irs official will not face criminal charges after a congressional firestorm over tax exempt applications. former irs official lois lerner and others were in the center of a firestorm that erupted more than two years ago centered around an inspector generals audit that said its agents improperly singled out tea party and other conservative groups for extra scrutiny when they

applied for tax exempt status during the 2010 and 2012 elections. that prompted investigations by the justice department. the house voted to hold lerner in contempt of congress when she refused to answer questions. new jersey congressman frank pallone wants to know if two popular online betting sites are monitoring the people that pay. he wants to know if nfl players are involved and wants to make sure if they are, their winnings comply with policies. the nfl is the only sports league that allows their players and personnel to bet, but they can only win a maximum $250. pallone wants a hearing to review daily fantasy gambling sites. nbc sports and comcast ventures are investors of fan duel. lamar oden is said to be having a hard time dealing with his condition, his physical condition is improving but his mental state is fragile. doctors are keeping visitors

away with the exception of odom's wife khloe kardashian. police believe odom overdosed on cocaine and other drugs. reports his kidneys are severely damaged. fans are tweeting offering to donate their kidney, others made the same offer but attached a hefty price tag. parents who may want to check your child's toy box, build-a-bear is recalling more than 34,000 of the popular stuffed animals because of a choking hazard. the recall is for the starbrights dragon. the satin seams can open, allowing the stuffing material inside to be exposed and children could choke on it. no injuries have been reported. you can return the stuffed animal to the store and exchange it for another one. well, if you ordered a significant amount of marijuana through the mail, police in north jersey have your package. police are asking the person who was expecting 50 pounds of pot in the mail to come claim it. it was delivered to a home in

hazlet, the home owner called police because the package was addressed to someone who doesn't live there. in the meantime police are also trying to find the shipper. there's a new effort to keep one of philadelphia's signature outdoor spaces green. taking a live look at the schuylkill river where city leaders are trying to reduce the amount of plastic waste in the water and along the trail with the choose to reuse initiative. today they came together to announce new free water bottle filling stations that will stretch along kelly drive, officials hope the change will encourage people to opt for reusable water bottles. as part of the effort, more than 12,000 reusable water bottles will be given away this weekend. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> well, we have cooler weather today, but, of course, that didn't stop some people from getting outside. nbc 10 in ventor, atlantic county, where cameras caught

folks strolling along the boardwalk, beautiful dunes and ocean, doesn't matter what time of year, it's beautiful at the shore. and the headlines, well, much colder air. you're really going to feel it tonight. weekend showers, couple of them. not going to ruin anybody's weekend, i don't think, and the strongest hurricane ever recorded is about to hit mexico. now we've got clear skies there, a lot of blue in that sky again. 64 crisp degrees, look at the humidity, 27%, winds out of the north at 12 miles an hour. of course, yesterday we've got up to 77 after 76 on wednesday. so far today, we're at 64 degrees and going down to 60 tomorrow and then 68 degrees on sunday. 52 in mount pocono. it was near, well, well into the 70s yesterday. and 59 degrees in quakertown right now.

60 in allentown. 62 in washington township, mt. holly, 61 in trenton. this is with bright sunshine, so imagine how chilly it's going to get tonight when we lose that. 69 degrees in woodbine is the warm spot. temperatures ten to 15 degrees colder than this time yesterday. mount pocono, 18 degrees colder. the lows tonight down to the freezing mark in allentown and mount pocono, 36 in reading, 34 in pottstown, 32 degrees in philadelphia itself. so it's not like it's that cold for this time of the year, but compared to what we've seen recently. well, we're certainly still dry. there are showers to the west. this is not a strong system. it's a weak front that's going to be coming through over the weekend. this is the strong system, this is hurricane patricia, the eye is tiny and there's 200 mile an hour winds around that thing. going to be catastrophic here just in a matter of hours. it's a category 5 and if they

had things up to category 6, this would be a category 6, because it is way, way stronger than the minimal category 5. call it minimal. well, the temperatures going up and down, this time they are going down. watch how far down they go as we go through the night tonight, low 40s by 10:00, definitely need the coats out there. by tomorrow morning, look at some of those places in the 30s. not much wind. wind's going to diminish. what about cloud cover? start with sunshine tomorrow, then clouds during the day. no rain expected tomorrow or tomorrow evening, as you'll see there, but well after midnight, here's that front coming down, and so if we're going to see showers this weekend, it will be more like 5:00 to 7:00 a.m. on sunday. and then it's gone. so we can handle that, right? sunday's even a decent day. actually, a little bit warmer than saturday.

so clear and much cooler tonight, 42 for the low in philadelphia, 32 in some of the northern and western suburbs. tomorrow, start off with sunshine, clouds increase, but that's pretty chilly, high of 60. remember when we were 77 degrees yesterday? and the seven-day forecast, early shower possible on sunday, but afternoon high of 68. then another front comes through with colder air on monday, so we're chilly monday and tuesday, and believe it or not, some of the leftover moisture from patricia that's now hitting mexico may affect our weather wednesday and thursday. we're not going to get hit with a hurricane, but may very well get some rain. they make us look really good. >> philadelphia's favorite football team might not be the birds you think. nbc 10 is at temple university with how the owls are now making history. this is not a time to take a break. >> senior service programs across our area on edge. how pennsylvania's budget crisis might impact the care provided

rear end dangling over the chesapeake bay bridge after the crash. surpris surprisingly, no one was hurt. new england police are tracking down a thief with expensive taste in wine. surveillance video shows what happened when the clerk caught him attempting to smuggle a $200 bottle out of the store in connecticut. he escaped after a brief struggle. police believe he's responsible for at least half a dozen other wine crimes in four states, including new jersey. in one case police believe he took a $4,800 bottle of wine from a restaurant.

>> good taste anyway. >> i think so. 115 days, that's how long it's gone since we had a budget in pennsylvania. now one lawmaker is issuing a challenge. >> what he's asking that lawmakers not do until the stalemate is over. plus, breathalyzers can detect alcohol, but they could soon detect something else. the new tool that police officers could soon use during a traffic stop. plus, about 15 degrees colder outside than it was yesterday, and the chill's going to continue through the weekend. how cold it's going to get and when we could see some showers next in my first alert forecast.

heads towards the coast of mexico as a powerful category 5 storm with 200 mile per hour winds. a huk warning is in effect for a stretch of coastline that includes the tourist resort of puerta vallarta. university of delaware police are looking for a man who tried to sexually assault a female student just after midnight thursday morning. the victim was running to the store when it happened. she was able to fend off her attacker. campus police are going over surveillance footage. hundreds gathered today to celebrate the life of 3-year-old brendan creato of haddon township. brendan's body was found last week in the woods not far from his father's home soon after he was reported missing. right now how that little boy died remains a mystery. well, it's now day 150 without a budget in pennsylvania. >> schools and social services are really feeling the crunch. they are not getting paid by the state. nbc 10's lauren mayk joins us live with what a state senator is urging his colleagues not to do. lauren? >> good evening, he doesn't want

them to go home. he wants them to keep working until they come up with a deal. not taking a break next month until it's done. well, we are now closing in on four months without a budget. that is almost one-third of the year. schools are borrowing money to stay open and today senator art haywood brought together social service groups that say they may have to take a break from services, too, if they don't get the money they need. >> we are now using what little money we have left to pay our staff and continue providing meals at our senior centers. those funds will also soon be gone. >> i talked to a spokesperson for the senate majority leader today about this issue of when legislators are working. she tells me even though the rank and file members are not required to be there for a period next month, the leadership is still working on a deal and members could be called back in just six hours. i'm lauren mayk, nbc 10 news.

from our nbc 10 delaware news bureau, the fbi is offering a $10,000 reward for the arrest of a murder suspect. take a good look at this photo of damian thomas. authorities believe he may be hiding in atlanta. police say thomas shot and killed shannon reid on west 27th street in wilmington back in april. they say he took off after the crime and hasn't been seen in the area since. second man wanted in connection with a deadly home invasion in newcastle county is now in police custody. he was on the run since last week. shabazz and a second man broke into a home in dover, killed the home owner and an 18-year-old woman. the home owner's son was injured. the second suspect turned himself into police earlier this week. getting in shape could put your security at risk. that is if you use those popular fitbits. >> coming up next, how the

company is responding to allegations the device could be hacked and hurt computers, too. >> plus, the three sports that put high school girls most at risk for knee injuries. it used to be illegal.

atlantic county didn't allow its elected politicians to take large donations from contractors doing business with the county. then will pauls changed the law, allowing him to pocket thousands of dollars in campaign cash. now pauls is taking thousands from those who want to move casinos to north jersey, threatening our jobs and our local economy. and he said he wants the vote to allow north jersey casinos "this year." we just can't trust will pauls.

this is nbc 10 news. >> fitbit is defending itself against claims its fitness trackers can be hacked. earlier this month a researchers from a security firm claimed she found a way to hack into a fitbit through its bluetooth connection. in a statement to nbc news the company says those reports are false and that the researcher confirmed to fitbit this was only a theoretical scenario. in response, a spokesperson for the security firm told nbc news its researchers demonstrated a vulnerability in fitbit that could impact computers via a bluetooth connection. a new lawsuit says one of the world's largest retailers of health nutrition and energy-related supplements knowingly sold products spiked

with two synthetic drugs. the suit claims gnc continued to sell the supplements knowing they may contain substances known as hidden speed without testing them or warning customers. federal and state officials have been cracking down on supplements that call themselves all natural but contain hidden drug ingredients. gnc is not commenting on the lawsuit. new study by the children's hospital of philadelphia shows female high school athletes more likely to have knee injuries than males. most of their injuries happen playing soccer, basketball, and lacrosse. experts say programs focused on reducing injuries for those at risk sports could cut the number of knee injuries. pregnant women who use marijuana are more likely to use other drugs, that's according to researchers. a quarter of the expectant moms who tested positive for marijuana admitted to using other drugs such as methamphetamines and cocaine. doctors encourage to screen.

a new way to test for marijuana, you've probably heard of an alcohol breathalyzer. researchers are working on a device that screens for the chemical in marijuana that gets a person high. the device was accurate about half of the time in a recent round of testing. and they can make improvements, they will send the breathalyzer to police departments so officers can use it some time next year. all right, well, you won't get me doing this. this next story could make you cringe if you have a fear of heights. >> take a look at this, people rappelling in center city. next, we'll tell you why dozens of people made this daredevil move today. glenn, how about you? >> that's pretty repelling to me, too. i'm tracking cooler temperatures for our weekend. we could also see some showers go through the weekend timeline next in my first alert forecast.

recorded is just about to slam into mexico. we have blue skies again, 64 degrees, wind north at 12, 13 degrees colder than this time yesterday and very low humidity. we're in the low to mid 60s, except for the 52 in mount pocono, and once we get the sun going down, it will drop into the 50s very quickly and then into the 40s, then some places even into the 30s. so we've seen the 76 wednesday, 77 thursday, the average high 65. we're close to average today, as cold as it feels. even colder tomorrow, then we jump up for one day on sunday before going back down on monday. it's bright and sunny out there across the entire area. we do have a front to the west, so does not have a whole lot of moisture with it. not expecting a wet weekend here. this is the trouble, hurricane patricia in the eastern pacific, right about to make landfall in mexico and yet they are called

hurricanes in the eastern pacific, typhoons in the western pacific. a lot of people get that confused. it is a category 5. if it went to category 6, it would be labeled that. it's got 200 mile an hour winds, 155 miles an hour gets you a cat 5. the pressure, that's the lowest ever recorded, as well. now as far as the strongest to ever hit land, last year haiyan in the philippines, 195 mile an hour sustained winds, camille in mississippi 190, andrew 167. right now patricia has 200, so if it continues in its intensity, it will be the most intense on earth to make landfall. temperatures to the 30s tomorrow night, chilly tomorrow morning and not going to warm up a lot during the day. don't expect any rain, more clouds in the afternoon, no rain tomorrow evening either for your

outdoor activities, but if there's any rain this weekend, here's when it's likely to come between about 5:00 and 8:00 a.m. on sunday. if you sleep in on sunday, you'll miss the whole thing and even then it's not a lot of rain. look at the temperatures going back up into the 60s. upper 60s for sunday afternoon. sunday afternoon may actually turn out to be pretty nice. clearer, much cooler tonight, 42 for the low philadelphia, 32 north and west. during the day tomorrow, we expect things to start off sunny, then the clouds increase. kind of chilly with the high of 60 degrees. that's actually below average. then we jump up on sunday after an early shower. again, generally between 5:00 and 8:00 a.m., then monday is chilly, as is tuesday, and the rain that we're seeing in the seven day late wednesday and into thursday, that would be from some of the remnants from

patricia. and some of the remnants of patricia likely to hit texas over the weekend and cause flooding there, but the storm itself is not tracked right across mexico to go into texas. >> really is a monster storm. >> it is unbelievable. it was a tropical storm yesterday. it increased 100 miles an hour in one day. >> amazing, amazing. >> very. >> all right, glenn. well, one of the biggest games in philadelphia history coming up next week. >> we're talking birds, not the eagles, though, the owls. next we'll take you on campus to show you how the town is buzzing from the big win last night.

complex. it was, of course, a long drive back from north carolina, but a happy drive after their major win against the east carolina panthers. the team has been on a hot streak really all season and last night certainly kept that going, but now the team's focus is on a mightier opponent, notre dame and the upcoming face-off on halloween. for student fans, the record so far this season is the talk of campus. >> it's been very lively. people are really into it. we have the pep rallies, white knight last night, it was really fun. >> we're so excited because we want to go for the longest ever and we're so happy we're 7-0. the football team is the best now. >> we're just really proud of everyone and really excited for next week. >> reporter: nervous at all? >> a little nervous, but i think we can pull it off. >> reporter: nbc 10 was with some of those fans watching the team from afar here in philly last night. as you heard, students saying
